| You naturally high metabolism people drive me nuts! I am not one of those people and didn't really believe that they exsisted until I met a friend of mine. She is 5'8 and weighs about 110. She is just naturally that way. (23 yo, btw) She is always trying to gain weight as she has always been teased by her family about being so skinny. I swear I've never seen anyone eat so much and be so thin. And she does eat and no ed. | |||

Just wanted to say that I agree with the post cheering on everyone struggling. Let's be HEALTHY and love ourselves! I've watched many friends struggle with these diseases and suffer devastating consequences. A friend of mine who is in out-patient recovery (she's been doing really well for over a year!) definitely advises anyone struggling to get professional help. It is a long road, but all you can do is take the first step. I really hope that everyone can find help and support here, and not encouragement to delve deeper into ed.

I think we all struggle with this stuff to some degree. I've been in the same place before, being 118 and a 4 (I'm 5'7") and I felt like a fat cow. Ahhh, if only I had those days back now! Anyway, I used to obsess over calories and my body and I'm sure I would fall into the same pattern now, but I don't have time. In MHO, the best thing you can do for yourself, is like you said, help others. Take it a step further, and out of the cyber world. You like art, so see if there is a community outreach center near by where you can help little kids with art projects. Volunteer with girl scouts, or the humane society or some place that you can be passionate about. It really isn't aobut your body, but your weight is something that you can control when you are not happy with yourself for whatever reason. The more you take the focus off yourself, the happier you will be. Make sure to surround yourself with positive people who do like themselves. And while I agree that its good to find things that you like about yourself and focus on that, also look outside the physical. Your sense of humor, artisitic ability (I keep mentioning that because its something I totally lack, and envy in others!), good with people, hard worker..... there are so many things to take pride in about yourself besides your appearance. Get your bf to help you too. Look, I'm 27 and I've watched just about every friend I have struggle with this, wathced them puke up blood, end up with pelvic fractures at 19 from poor nutrition, have their hair fall out, end up in psychiatric wards after trying to kill themselves..... I know you're not there yet, but it could get out of hand and even the obsession isn't healthy. And Shame on some crappy counselor for thinking the behavior if for attention. What a jerk! |

All through childbirth (sans drugs) when if felt like I had been in pain forever and it would never end and forget just bring on the drugs, I would think to myself "Do you really remember how much it hurt one hour ago? No, so this moment will not last forever and you won't even remember it" Translate that into diet speak, and it's essentially that I may really really want those oreos now, but in the morning will I remember how wonderful they were or really believe that I had to eat them? No. I hope that made sense to someone else besides me..... sorry, it's been a long day. |

| yeah! like minded people! Most people seem to think I'm nuts for cutting all sorts of things out. I've cut out all artificial sweetners, most of the wheat (it's huge weakness... I'm working on it) high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, palm oil. If it comes in a package, I avoid it. I say this after eating pretzels and a cookie today |

Don't worry about the stigma. I was a single mom from the time I was 10 wks along. Talk about raised eyebrows! Automatically thought it was a one-night stand. I was with my baby's father for almost 5 years. I left because he was abusive, and once he hit me after I was pregnant, that was it. I couldn't bring a baby into that life. My son saved my life. Practical advice: I really hope you have family close by, as they will save your BUTT! I live with my parents and my mom watches my son while I finish school. Believe me, a kiddo is powerful motivation. It sounds like you are smart and responsible, and its frustrating to face judgement when you don't get to show every person you meet that you are capable and responsible. Enjoy your pregnancy! And like someone said earlier, you don't need to eat for 2. My friend in med school said that you only need an extra 300 calories per day for healthy weight gain throughout your pregnancy. You should still be able to exercise normally for a long time, too. Make sure to check with your Dr. about what kind of exercise you're doing. Ooohhh! Last bit of advice..... find mom-to-mom sales. They are like massive huge garage sales with nothing but baby stuff. You can find anything in there. I seldom see anything that you can even tell that it's not brand new. I can get 3 mos worth of clothes for my son for $45. Can't beat that. |

Ha! Love the story riflchik! My son will be 1 next Sat, so discipline hasn't been difficult at all......yet. I like the techniques here. I've always been anti-spanking (I actually left my babies father that I was engaged to for 3 years over such issues) but have never thought much of the restraint technique until I heard it described this way. When I have seen other parents do this it seemed more a way to reward bad behavior with one-on-one time with mommy. I'm big into natural parenting techniques, so this thread caught my interest. |

| Hey everyone, I'm Kamille, 27 and am just starting here. I'm 175 and looking to be 130 by beginning of July, then widdle off the last 5 or 10 pounds slowly. I need motivation to exercise in spite of a crazy schedule. It's really refreshing to see other people like me! I'm very into healthy eating aka not from a package. I eat a lot of veggies, lentils, brown rice, plain yogurt, steel cut oats, etc. My pitfall is night time when I lose all control! | |||

Wow! Go you, Missy! I gained 50 punds with my son. I was considered "clinically underweight" at 130, so my mom took it upon herself to fatten me up. Well, it worked really well. Weight has always been an issue for me, and it was only in the last 3 -4 years that I had acheived a weight I was happy with. Now, its really, really hard again. I lost 20 pound in the first couple of weeks post-partum, and that seems to be typical. Shoot for 25-30 pound weight gain. That is what most doctors consider healthy. I also have a friend in med-school who told me that women gain so much weight because we are telling ourselves "I'm eating for 2" but reall, You only need an extra 300 calories per day during pregnancy. Focus on eating healthy. It is what your baby needs most from you. And drink tons of water. Also, make sure you talk to your doctor about all this. They should at the least be able to steer you towards a nutritionist. My son will also be one next week, and my current weight is around 175, so I've gained even more weight since I delivered. I was doing really well for a while, but then I got lazy and sugar-dependent, and then hurt my back really badly and couldn't do much at all, so I medicated myself with food. It's a new year and time to get back on track! |

Yeah! People with the same problems as me! I have son who will be one in 10 days (gasp!) am a full-time student, work 32+ hrs/wk, and also have an internship at my university. With all that, time for exercise is my biggest problem. I wonder if you aren't tired because you have a sensitivity to a food. That was suggested by a friend of mine who is big into nutrition. I cut way back on wheat products and sugar and feel much much better. Big ones are wheat (gluten), sugar, dairy, and artificial sweetners. Also make sure you drink lots of water. I read somewhere recently that the amt of water you should drink every day is your weight in pounds divided by 2. I never make it but it's something to shoot for. Also, I highly recommend avoiding artificial sweetners. High fructose corn syrup is the evil! I have a few ingredients that I avoid like the plague and it really helps to eliminate things that are not healthy. For me, its high fructrose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils and palm kernel oil (or palm oil). When you eat more of the right food, you can eat a LOT more of it! I've had four good sized meals today and am still under my calories just because it was all healthy! Hang in there and let us know how you're doing! |
