Maintaining addicted to calorie counting? Jul 05 2008
23:39 (UTC)

I'm not sure if you're at this point (and I really hope you're not!) but last year I became beyond obsessed with counting. I started off just wanting to lose 5-6 lbs, and I had no intentions of starving myself. But I was SO hooked on counting and staying "in control" that I ended up losing 26 lbs instead. I was 5'3 and weight 99- 101 lbs. It didn't matter that my clothes were so baggy, or that my wrists disgusted me. I had trouble sleeping at night because I couldn't bare to feel all the bones sticking out. Everyone I knew told me I looked like a rail, but I didn't listen. My fingers nails turned dark blue, I lost my period, I was too tired go anywhere, couldn't wake up in the mornings. My grades went down in school (and I was ALWAYS a perfectionist in terms of getting straight A's.) I'd spit out my food and lied to everyone about eating more. And just a bunch of other crap.

My main point is- please don't let yourself get to this point. If you've already reached a healthy goal weight, just focus on maintaining that. But don't make yourself so paranoid that you can't even eat a bite without wondering about the calories. You don't want to hurt yourself.

So many people think that anorexia, bulemia, etc. are just for people who PURPOSELY want to starve themselves. But really, it can happen when you don't realize it, and sometimes when you finally do realize you have a problem, it might be too late to fix it. Luckily I caught myself just in time, but I still hurt my body pretty bad.

Yes cheese is hard to give up. I've read that stuff like feta cheese is bad during pregnancy. But stuff like cottage cheese, cream cheese, natural yogurt, etc. is okay. And veggie cheese should be fine to. I try to balance it out though by eating lots of veggies, fruits, whole grains, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, organic crackers, natural peanut butter, nuts, legumes, and lots of other health foods.

Yes I do! Plus I also wanted to take several at home tests so that I could be 100% sure. ( my best friend had to take a few tests before one came out positive, even though she had a feeling all along that she was pregnant- and now she has a daughter.) But yes I'm going to the doctor next week.

Congrats hollyhills

I was 1 week from turning 24 when we found out about being pregnant.  My son was born 4 months before I turned 25.  I had met his father 1 week before I turned 18, he was 26 at the time.  We started living together about 9 months later.  I knew the day I met him he was the one for me.  Fast forward almost 20 years, we have 3 beautiful children, a great house and we are coming up to our 2 year wedding anniversary!!!

I hope you are taking your prenatal vitamins, eating well(your caloric intake may need to be upped by 300 calories in a few weeks), excerise the same way before you became pregnant but as tummy grows stop all balance excersizes and watch for any motion that puts strain on pelvic floor.  Enroll yourself in prenatal classes and I strongly recommend breastfeeding as the benefits outway any artificial formula on the market.  Also taking a few classes 2 months before baby is born at a laleche course will allow you for a more successful run at it

I loved being a younger mum!  Felt my energy level return fairly fast.  and my body recovered pretty fast as well(I dont do pregnant well but sail thru labour and delivery).  Make sure you involve you partner in the next 9 months.  Lots of dads read to the baby while in mums tummy.

 Thanks again!

My maintenance calorie level is 1800 so was thinking that 2000 calories a day would be good for now. Also I'm gonna continue to speed walk on the treadmill each day+ regular walking. I'll make sure to ask my doctor at my appointment next week if this amount of food and exercise is right. We're also gonna discuss me starting my prenatal care. Speaking of which, I bought some prenatal vitamins yesterday. I also wanted to take some classes and do LOTS and LOTS of reading. I just feel very fortunate to have so many supportive people in my life- many of which are mothers of all ages, so they have lots of good advice and stories to offer. I do plan on breastfeeding since that's the healthiest. I feel like I have so much to learn already!

Weird, what pregnancy test would tell you you are prego that soon after your ovulation date and before you would have even missed a period?

The "first response" test tells you 5 days before your missed period. Although I decided to take several tests just incase.

Thank you everyone!

And don't worry I will continue to be cautious with people in general. I think that's one of the reasons I'm so fond of him because ever since I met him, he's always been extremely genuine to everyone around him and he always takes responsibility for his actions. + He has always been there for me, since the day I met him. His family is the exact same way.

Yes I've told him and he's completely supportive. I'm not a teenager and I'm just about finished with college. Sure it was our first time doing it together and yes it was a bit unplanned, but we are both ready for the challenges to come. And we are each aware that we're responsible for our actions. Not to mention, we also have the finances needed for this change. And he's not just some guy I just randomly met, we've known eachother for years and our families have always been close. We've only told a few people so far (mostly older adults and people who are close to our parents, and they are all completely supportive.)

It's not necessary for you to supposedly feel sorry. But thank you for sympathy.

I should also add that one of my best friends had to take several tests before she found one that came out positive. And she was indeed pregnant and now has a beautiful daughter. Even with the negatives, she knew all along she was. So keep testing throughout the weeks- or maybe ask your doctor if taking a blood test will be more accurate.

Yesterday while I was reading at Barnes and Noble I started to get these repeating cramps in my abdomen. It may have been implantation cramping.

Okay, there are a few things that I think you should be cautious about before you get your hopes up, or start to panic.

How do you know it was "the exact day of your ovulation", even though you didn't know it then? If you're counting days since the start of your cycle, not every cycle is the same, and not everyone ovulates on the 14th day - that's a myth.

Second, by my calendar, the intercourse you're concerned about was only about six or seven days ago. Most conception books and sources I've read say that it takes almost a week for the developing embryo to implant in your uterus and start interacting with your body, so that's why physical symptoms (common early pregnancy symptoms like frequent urination, sore breasts, nausea, dizziness, headaches, etc.) don't appear for a week or two after conception. Upshot - six or seven days after intercourse is pretty early for the host of physical symptoms you're describing.

Finally, I don't discount intuition. I know lots of people who swear they "just knew" they were pregnant. But that doesn't account for all the people who were worried they were pregnant, unplanned, and "knew" it was true, then it turned out not to be. I mean that intuition can be a funny thing, and can be linked to your expectations and fears.

You need to wait at least 14 days after intercourse to do a home pregnancy test, and your doctor probably won't be able to tell you anything much before that time either. Between now and then, because there's a possibility you're pregnant due to the unprotected penetration, don't consume alcohol, don't smoke, rest, eat well. Try to relax and not stress too much.

I'm gonna take the test this Sunday mourning. I called my clinic today and they said that they suspect that it is pregnancy and suggest I take the test on the 20th.

Also I was able to determine that that was my ovulation day by using an online ovulation calculator.

Yesterday I experienced what I think may have been implantation cramping. (Repeated crampy pain feeling in my abdomen.) It wasn't really bad but it was quite strange. It happened while I was reading at Barnes and Noble.

When was the time that you had intercourse? You're supposed to take it at least 2 weeks after that day. If you still don't get your period in the next week or so I'd suggest you take the test again. Maybe try a different brand too. It may just be too early. And when you do, make sure you take it the FIRST thing in the mourning- the very first time you go to the bathroom that day. Good luck!

I was thinking about going for the average 2000 calorie diet during this time and filling up on a variety of healthy foods. I called my clinic and the earliest I can take my test is this Sunday mourning. I guess I just have a strange intuitive feeling that I am- I even had a dream last week that someone close to me said I was gonna be a mother now. And the symptoms are getting a little worse. If I really am I will call my doctor or clinic on monday and go in for an exam, then I'll talk to them about prenatal care, my diet and pick up as many book as possible.

Any favourites that you suggest?

And to the OP...if he is above the age of 40 and has been waiting with baited breath until you turned the magic "18"... and showing up on your birthday...to me that's a little creepy. He does obviously like you though...whatever his age.

Date who YOU want to date. I had a 40 year old who was "taken" with me when I was 18...and I thought of him as like, my parent's age, and wasn't very attracted to him, although he was nice.

I hope you take the time to date a few people and find out who you really want to be with, and who YOU really are before you focus on one person. I hope you don't feel any obligation to date anyone just because they like you...make sure the feeling is mutual.

Happy Birthday btw !

Thank you for the birthday wishes! HAHA he is definitely not 40, he's 28. I'm 21 and I don't think I'd feel comfortable dating someone who could technically be my father.

Haha that's great! You know what's a really good, inexpensive product? Dove styling cream. They make one for straight hair and one for curly hair too. It makes your hair so soft and under control. And not all crunchy like hairspray or hard like gel. You can run your fingers through your hair and it feels so naturally great.

I must be the super feminist.  I don't dye my hair,  or even wear make up.  I can't stand the way make up feels on my face, like my face is covered with grease, ugh.  But I love my hair color, or least I used to, it is starting to turn gray now (and I am only 30!)  But it is still mostly a honey color with natural highlights in it from the sun.  But I did get a hair dye in high school for my senior prom, it was blond highlights, it was beautiful!  But I will never do it again mostly because I am too lazy to maintain it.  I don't really understand why women are so obsessed with their looks, why does it really matter?  I have enough stress in my life without having the added stress of worrying about my looks.  I just brush my hair and let it air dry, I never style it or anything, but it looks okay just like it is.

I don't know, maybe I'm just seeking fellow girls who think in similar ways when it comes to hair and make up, so that I don't feel so funky among my own friends haha.

I'm half Korean, 1/4 French and 1/4 Mexican so my hair is "mixed." It has the strength of Korean hair but feels like European hair. It's REALLY dark (almost black) except it gets all these brown highlights during the summer. And it's straight as a STICK.

I understand that by not having curly or wavy hair whatsoever, that I can't assume that taking care of that type of hair is easy. But I've also had a friend who had very very curly hair and she was proud of it and always kept it that way. Along with a few other curly/ wavy/ African American haired friends who were proud of what they were born with.

And of course I still care about my looks to an extent. I may only have my natural hair and never use fake nails, fake contacts, fake tans, cover up make up, etc. But I do use some mascara, eyeliner and shadow. I also try to take very good care of my skin and I love clothes and so on.

So I take it you wear the same exact outfit every day? Do you dress blindfolded each morning? Some people just enjoy changing more than their clothes every now and then.

No that's not what I'm saying...

I mean that wavy, curly, straight, dark, blonde, red, auburn, african american, asian and pretty much any type of hair can be pretty. I'm just curious as to why that many curly hair girls feel that they have to straighten their hair and that most straight hair girls feel that they have to curl it. And by that I mean on a daily basis. Of course we all like to do something fancy for formal occasions.

I had short hair once in my life. My mom cut it in fourth grade therefore I never had someone who didn't have a degree touch my hair from that point on.  It is straight as a pin and I have to work with it for body.  Since I love my long hair and don't have drastic cuts, I color my hair for change.  I was a blonde and now a brunette.  My real hair color isn't awful but I don't think it compliments because its an ashy tone. (yuck) I am done with being blonde because my roots got too dark (use to be a dirty blonde when I was little). Now I just experiment with dark tones plus I love having an excuse to go to my salon. I absolutely love it there! :) I might add the bible says a woman's hair is her crown therefore we should take good care of it :)

Well I definitely agree that taking good care of your hair is important. Healthy hair is awesome.

"Everyone" does not dye their hair. I have never dyed my hair in my life. The way I 'do' my hair involves washing it, and going to bed. I brush it at some point or another. I think my hair is the epitome of natural.

Also, why do you say you 'are not a feminist or anything'. Is there something wrong with being a feminist? I'm just curious that you were so quick to dismiss that possibility.

No I don't think there's anything wrong with being a feminist. I've just seen many people ask simple questions about hair and make up. And the people who reply assume that they are trying to get into some political/ society view debate, when they're really just talking about hair and make up. =)

I have red hair and I hated it when I was younger! I am now 56 and my hair is still red.

I have a question for you guys. I am letting my hair grow long because I want to donate it to Locks of Love.  At what age do you think is too old for a woman to wear their hair long? My hair has very little gray in it and people think that I look like I am 40ish.

Wow I've always loved red hair! And I don't think there's any age limit to having long hair. if you wanna grow it out, just grow it out. I think the important thing is that you keep it healthy. I've had long hair and I always will, it's just a personal preference.

hollyhills, first, this is nothing new.  maureen mccormick may not have curled her hair, but millions of girls straightened theirs (with clothing irons, because hair irons hadn't been invented yet) to try to look like her.

and please please please don't say things like "I'm not a feminist or anything," like you have to apologize for thinking that women should be authentic.  there's nothing wrong with believing that women should be true to themselves, and there's nothing wrong with being a feminist.

No but I've seen a lot of people get crap about being "crazy feminists" when they're just asking simple questions about hair or make up.

I guess I'm also curious because I've spent a lot of my life in Korea (I'm half Korean) where the girls there keep make up to a minimum and leave their hair natural. Only the old women chemically alter their hair.

I guess I should add that I've never dyed my hair. I don't blow dry it (it's naturally straight) and I save the styling wand for only really special occasions such as weddings or formals.
