Weight Loss I don't get it. Jul 30 2008
23:13 (UTC)

that's a good point, armandaleg.  I guess I hadn't thought of that, probably because I didn't want to think I was 5 lbs heavier then :-p.

I tested my new scale, which is digital, by drinking 16 ounces of water, and it weighed me up higher a pound.  Every time I peed I would weigh again and it went down, respectively.  Also I weighed some boxes that I was going to ship with it, and the post office confirmed the weight I had gotten.

I guess I just have to start working harder and making better choices and stop blaming my scale Innocent

Thank you all so much for being patient with my spotty updating!  As Penny said I am moving cross-country and have been swamped.  Thanks sonini for taking over and making the new list.  I should be able to get on regularly now, and after my move I will be on vacation for about 2 weeks, but will promptly update upon my return.. Thanks everyone for hanging in there!!!!  Everyone is doing so awesome, I'm thinking we may need a HOT BY HALLOWEEN challenge when we are finished with this one?  hehehe...

omg... this is exactly what I'm going through right now.  I threw away my $5 scale about a month ago because I was sick of weighing myself and thought that maybe it was wrong.  Since then I have started noticing my jeans fitting me right out of the dryer and not having to fight with my shirts to fit me right, my body just FEELS and I believe, LOOKS slimmer.  So today I decided to go buy a better quality scale because I figured the number would not be too scary since I have been feeling so much better about my body.  Well I got on that damn $30 scale and it told me the same fricken thing the old one was! I, too, don't do weight training and such so I'm pretty sure it's not muscle that has kept me at the same exact weight, as my body is always muscular no matter how much I weigh.

I'm with ya!  Help us, everyone!

Motivation Too EXHAUSTED to work out? Jul 17 2008

Thanks everyone for your help!  Judging by a few different sites as well as my own calculations I've found that my BMR is around 1600 cals (I'm 22, 5'6 160lbs).  I assumed that my job would be considered exercise 5 times a week, which translates into moderate activity level (averaging out the strenuous days and slow days at work) and that bring my maintenence total to around 2400.  When I aim to lose 2 lbs a week I keep my deficit at 1000 cals, which brought me to 1400.  Do you think I may be burning more than I think? I am also very muscular so I should probably take in a few more calories because of that... What do you think of bumping up to 1650 cals and seeing what happens, does that seem too high or should I add them gradually like up to 1500 for a week and then 1600, etc...

Yea, I just upped my calories from 1300 to 1500 and settled at 1400 for what feels right for me.  That's a great idea, though... I've tried pilates once before and totally couldn't do it because I was so out of shape, but now that I'm a bit more in shape I should try it again...

Anyone else in a similar situation?

I just threw my scale in the trash can on trash day. It's goonnneee.  I'm DEFINITELY going through withdrawal but I find that I beat myself up A LOT less, and it is easier for me to recover after I falter as I don't have to see a big jump in the numbers and feel helpless. I know I'll probably give in earlier, but I am trying to not weigh myself until September. It's hard!

Weight Loss Who blew thier diet for the 4th? Jul 07 2008

Original Post by probones:

During the day, even during dinner, I had nothing but raw fruits and veggies all day including at dinner. Then my mom forced me to take a little desert, so I had a cookie. That triggered a serious binge and I ended up eating a little brownie thing, half a cupcake, two of these pastry things with fresh cherries on top. Then I ate salads, half a brownie, half a chocolate cupcake, a piece of cake, these salsa cream cheese appetizer things, some chips with salsa, candy from a piniata, a klondike bar, two hersheys kisses, and i think little tiny thigns here and there. I disgust myself sometimes. I ate so much that I couldn't breath without being in serious pain. Like I literally started crying it hurt so bad.

"Probones"(just the name is alarming, really), the reason you binged is because ALL you ate were raw fruits and veggies. Your body needed more and it went nuts.  We need to remember that life will be a one "special event" after another and reasons to celebrate with food are everywhere, and we need to learn, not to restrict ourselves SO severely to the point where we can't even enjoy a hotdog on July 4th, but that we need to make some allowances to keep our bodies and minds in sync and make room for special things.  For some of us that means totally eating what we want and enjoying every bit of it and getting back on our plans the next day, and for others it simply means enjoying the food we love in moderation and not going over our calorie limit.  A long-term healthy lifestyle will not be acheived by severe food restrictions and "will power" over "BAD FOODS".

I had 2 awesome hamburgers, grilled corn, a bunch of beer, and chips and salsa and it was yummmmmy!

You're not going to gain on 2000 calories a day unless you are burning less than 2000 calories a day.  Do you know about your deficit? Your bmr/rmr?  You may not lose, but you wont gain.

I think this thread needs to be ended because SO much good input has been given and the asker still does not seem to be satisfied, and seems to want to hear "don't eat anything healthy then! you can still lose weight that way!"  and NO ONE here is going to say that.

I don't understand how you can say "I'M SICK OF ALL FRUITS AND VEGGIES"

They are all so totally different from each other in texture, flavor, mouth-feel, color, smell, etc, that the ONLY thing they have in common is that they are good for you.  How can you say 'I hate soft stuff' about fruits and veggies?  Most of them aren't soft at all, and if you're overcooking them to the point of mush, then eating them isn't going to be helping you much because you have destroyed most to all of the vitamins in them anyway, as vitamins are easily destroyed by heat.

You say you're only eating 1200 calories, which may be a little low for you to be able to get in the nutrients that you need, especially if you're not eating healthily.

You probably are just going to have a "Yea, but...." answer to this like you have had for everyone else's thoughtful answers, so I'm really not sure why I even typed it.  Let's chalk it up to a rant!

I don't know how old you are because your profile is blank, but by looking at your pictures, it seems that you are pretty underweight.  Like someone else said, your legs and arms are very skinny, and your body just looks like you have an ED.  That is just my honest personal opinion.  Your body looks like that of a 12 year old, so if you are having issues with body image, I suggest you seek some professional help as no one on this site will be able to do anything but give you their personal opinions.

Nothing is getting through to her... she will not do any of her own research... I think she wants one of us to have a bunch of magical answers.

YOU need to spend some time with your friend GOOGLE and look for these answers YOURSELF.

Everyone who has posted these long and thoughtful responses has only gotten an "I KNOW, BUT....." answer.

The people on this site support eachother and help eachother, they don't FIX eachother.

You need to grow up and work on yourself intelligently before seeking others' support, as you OBVIOUSLY are not ready to accept the truth and make a real change in your life.

When I reach my ultimate goal weight:

I am DEFINITELY going to look forward to the beach, and buying all new clothes!

I am looking forward to getting dressed more easily in the morning and not having to fight with my shirts to not show my belly chub!

I am looking forward to not having to avoid certain situations where I would have previously felt uncomfortable like just being in the public eye in general!

My life will be different because:

I will be able to believe my boyfriend when he tells me how beautiful he thinks I am

I will be able to feel like nothing is holding me back in the world

I will have reached my ultimate goal through hard work and dedication, and will then know that anything is possible!

I understand that, I can read that in her original post, but someone who has trouble eating even 1200 calories a day more than likely does not have a weight problem.  If you look in her profile her weight loss ticker says she is trying to lose, but that she has gained 5 lbs.  It doesn't add up

I'm a little confused. If you can't get yourself to eat more than 1,000 calories a day, why is it that you need to lose weight?  I've never met someone who can't eat enough calories who actually needs to lose weight.  Can you explain a bit more what you mean?  We usually try to lose weight because we take in too many calories... sooooo.....

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding

I know what you mean... when I am at my parents house it seems like I feel safe... like I feel loved and I don't feel the need to look good for anyone, so it is license to enjoy myself and enjoy the foods that I love.

I struggle with binge eating, as well, and what I find helps tremendously is to PLAN a "binge".  I calculate my WEEKLY calorie intake that I need to still lose my desired amount of weight, then divide that weekly amount by 7, giving me the amount of calories I would need to eat per day, and simply take 100 calories off of 6 days of the week and add them to 1 day... thus my weekly allowance is STILL the same, and I'm really only missing 100 cals each day throughout the week (like 1 Tbsp less mayo on a sandwich) and then I have 600 extra calories on that one day.

I hope that makes sense.  It has kept me sane to have these "planned binge" days, really.  Most of the time I can't even meet that amount of calories anyway without feeling a little sick...

You are 5'6" and 142 lbs? That is a healthy weight. 130 may be too low for your body, causing it to send you signals to eat more. 142 is DEFINITELY not overweight for 5'6", and when you say "I need to lose some serious weight" it is a little alarming.

Weight Loss Kimkins? Jun 25 2008

I don't know why that address didnt work for me.  I'm pretty sure it's low carb, low fat, and low calorie.  I heard something about it on a celebrity website once... an example menu was like... breakfast 2 egg whites 1 slice turkey bacon, protein bar for snack, lunch grilled chicken on a salad with 1 tbsp olive oil, snack 2 celery sticks handful of almonds, dinner grilled chicken with steamed broccoli, dessert 1/2 c blueberries.

the sort of thing that only a celebrity could do, seeing as it is their day job to stay fit.  Pretty ridiculous I think...

she isnt power lifting lol... you don't need to go on a protein spree here! I'd say your protein looks great... maybe try chicken breast rather than thigh, though.  Youd get more meat for less cals and fat... but your chicken, fish, eggwhites, and cheese provide you with protein, and seeing as you are not new at this whole thing, you know whether or not you're eating the amount of protein that makes your body function properly.

Hmmm ok, yea it definitely could be the lifting.  Your food choices look great to me, so I wouldn't think too much about the types of food being wrong, I say if this isn't an everyday thing for you, go ahead and eat something satisfying for you...  One of my favorite low calorie/high fiber and high satiety snacks is air-popped popcorn.  It is crunchy and filling, and ALMOST feels like being bad... hehe

One thing most of us struggle with are our hunger cues, so if your body is genuinely telling you that it is hungry, I say honor it and give it something nutritious!

Sorry if you said it and I missed it, but is this a new way of life for you? If you are used to eating more food than you have today or have been recently, your actual stomach stretches and retracts with the amount or lack of food you put in it.  So if you are used to eating more, it will have stretched your stomach out, especially if you regularly ate larger quantities. You may have to give your tummy some time to readjust to the new amount of food that you are feeding it...

Also, 1200 cals may be too low for your body.  You can go by the burn meter on this site and the calorie estimator and such, but in actuality, your body is unique and you may have more muscle/faster metabolism than the calculator takes into consideration. You also need to factor in your activity level and the calories you burn above during the day.

Also, you may be feeling deprived rather than hungry, I know I experience that occasionally.  May need to check and uncross those hunger/thirst/want/need signals that we all struggle with. If this is the case, my suggestion would be to allow yourself to eat foods you like but in smaller quantities.  If you are eating something just because it is healthy for you, but you dont necessarily enjoy it, you may be heading for a a fall off the wagon

blah blah i'm long-winded blah blahh

Weight Loss Mom Says: "you are rounder..." Jun 24 2008

I'm sorry that what she said made you feel like it did.  I know that hurtful things from people who are close to us can really resonate.

Maybe she is noticing your curves a bit more, in a good way, and has trouble expressing that to you, so resorts to a more cutting way of saying it.  After all, it is how you feel about your body that matters, not what others have to say about it. Easier said than done, I know.

Have you shared with her how you are going about it the healthy way now?  Maybe if you open up to her a bit about how you're working towards a healthier lifestyle, it will open up the lines of communication and she will feel more comfortable expressing things to you.

Does she lead a healthy lifestyle?  I've encountered that, as well, from people who don't eat right who claim that my way of life, ie eating right and working out, isn't working and that I look the same... just to convince themselves that changing their own lifestyle wouldn't change the way they look or feel.  Maybe a bit of jealousy?

Our mothers are our mothers, but they are just people, as well.

Think about when you have said something hurtful or judgemental to someone.  Were you saying it because you really meant it and wanted to hurt the person?  Probably not... you were probably feeling insecure about something or embarrassed, etc.  I know that is what I have found for myself, at least.

Hope my rant helps even a little.  Just know that you are beautiful and there is no one like you in the world. Embrace the parts of you that you love and that you find perfect, even if you're not used to admitting it.  Focus on the good and work on the bad.
