| Fitness | Stress Fracture - My cautionary story to others | Jan 19 2009 03:45 (UTC) |

I have actually had two stress fractures also, with my first one being the upper femur. Sorry to say, it took over 6 months before I walked normal again, and even then I suffered to get back to running. That was a couple of years ago after the NYC marathon. I am about 2 months recovered since my last fracture, which was my tibia. Go see a specialist, my recovery and program this time well exceeded my expectations. My sports medicine doctor also discovered why I had a pattern of stress fractures, other than overtraining! ( vitamin D and leg length.) Good luck on your recovery! |

| Fitness | running on the road vs the treadmill... | Mar 16 2008 03:23 (UTC) |

I think that running outside is more challenging physically, but running on the treadmill is more challenging mentally. I was training for a marathon, and I could run for miles outside, but the minute I had to train indoors because of the weather, I was lucky to finish 6 miles. I am so bored indoors, and I hate the treadmill! I currently run 3 miles a day on the treadmill, until it stops snowing!! I have a trail I run on the beach that is 10 miles, so as soon as the weather is better, I will be inspired and ready to run outside! |

I remembered how much I used to enjoy riding a bike when I was a kid, so I figured why not get a bike! My first ride out, I realized its a lot harder than I remembered! My butt was sore, it was about 30 degrees, my face, hands, and toes were numb, and my lungs were on fire! I only made it about 8 miles. I spent a couple of days after that first ride thinking it was the most expensive piece of furniture I had bought in a while, because I definitely wasn't riding it again!! I now am riding anywhere from 30 -50 miles on weekends, and looking forward to better weather so I can ride after work! (No more snow in New England!!) I bought a hybrid Trek 7.6 FX and it rocks! I love my bike! |

I just saw this post, and wanted to share that I have quit drinking since the New Year. I had a weak moment last Friday night, and while I was shopping at the grocery store, purchasing a nice tuna steak and salad dinner, I decided a glass of wine was a just reward for a full month of calorie counting, and almost two months without alcohol. I was carded at the register, didn't have my ID, (I had left it in my jacket, after my 5 mile run.) and the 17 year old cashier didn't believe I was over 30. Sigh.... Still alcohol free...I figured it was a sign!

When the trainer talks to me at the gym, I don't want to think its because he's drumming up business. |
