ED and starch is the worst sit-com ever, tell me about it. But today I had some CHICKPEAS. ED was spitting all sorts of disagreement. Sure, it isnt a potato (props to you for that, by the way.) but its starchy. I like em. So I ate tons.

| Fitness | rest b/t push-ups | Jan 07 2009 22:02 (UTC) |

Push ups are more of an endurance/strength excercise. Dont get me wrong, they're an awesome functional excercise with many a benefit etc. etc, but in order to gain muscle its best to do something that shocks your muscles rather than wear them out. Of course, this would mean weightlifting. Weights + pushups = awesome upper body. For growth, its best to shock your muscles major, feed them with proper nutrients in sufficient amounts, let them rest completely, then shock them again. Rinse and repeat until buff. |

I just ate EGGS. Not puny tasteless egg-whites but EGGGGS. I feel like I could go wrestle a bull now. Okgo, much applause for taking one of the most important steps to ending the pain. I hope your recovery is fun, enlightening, and swift. |

| Fitness | Relief of sore muscles | Jan 04 2009 23:55 (UTC) |

Its probably acid in the muscles. I get the same thing when I start biking heavy after the off season. What usually works for me, despite how boring it is, is doing extremely light work using the same muscle groups directly after a ride, or in your case practice. It relaxes the muscle, speeds recovery, eliminates acid, etc. You might have noticed I use the word acid alot, and thats because excercise in itself is acidifying to the body. To make it less of an issue, you could take more alkalizing minerals, eat more alkalizing foods, etc. etc. I personally dont believe in the whole acid/alkaline holistic movement but it works for some people. |

Lala, you're so awesome. Seriously, you inspire everyone on these forums with eating illnesses so much. You are big bright beacon of hope for all of us lost at sea with our issues. Everyone listen to this person, she knows. |

| Health & Support | I'm afraid for my little brother. | Jan 04 2009 17:21 (UTC) |
|
Alright, I understand you are worried sick over your little brothers health and want to help him feel healthier, stronger, and happier. But, I noticed every description you've given about HIS choices gives off a very tyranical vibe and makes it seem as though your brother is doing something WRONG. I'm sorry to break it to you, but your little brother isnt doing a thing wrong. HIS choices may or may not be hurting HIM in the long run but the fact that he is eating at all is something much better than what your constant belittling may give him in the long run. Think about the lasting impression you are giving him. 12 years old is a very socially receptive age, when most people begin to question who they are and where the fit in the social world, and when EVERYONE feels socially akward at some point in time. Right now, it seems like you are doing more damage to him (as a mind, as a person, as a soul) than any amount of junk food could. I'm begging you to stop and look at the situation with compassion before you and your famliy leave a lasting dent in his psyche that could never heal. I apologize if my post seems to attack, I feel very strongly about how you are treating your little brother as my family treated me the same at the same time in my life and it made me waste years I could have spent being alive. Think about what you are doing. |

| The Lounge | The Machinist (Movie, with the lovely Christian Bale) | Jan 04 2009 16:59 (UTC) |

Whats as equally amazing as the weight he lost is the weight he gained immediately after The Machinist for his role in Batman. To fluctuate and stress your body that much in such a short period of time will definitely do damage. Maybe not now, but I bet Christian Bale will pay the price later in his life. |

| Health & Support | Has anyone tried Valerian root for insomnia? | Jan 03 2009 01:45 (UTC) |

As far as just valerian it didnt really do much for me. Melatonin, however, works everytime with about as little grogginess as you can get for something so effective (in my opinion.)

| Fitness | over exercising ahhh!! | Jan 01 2009 15:26 (UTC) |
|
Overexercising, in my opinion, really should be the first thing to consider when starting a serious fitness program. The time spent recovering from overexcercising is detrimental to overall fitness and will delay any progress, moreso than underexcercising. If we knew more about your excercise habits, we would be better able to serve you, governor. |

Thanks Fidget and Gibbit...are you two related? :) I would be lying to you, fidget, if I said I am never fearful of getting over this. Sometimes I am. Sometimes I am not. But either mentally or physically trying to squash it, yes. I guess I just needed some honest straight talking to from strangers. Just you pointing out the fact that it sounds indulgent, when I had no intention of making it such, makes my own perspective on the situation clearer. Thanks Gibbit for the hope. It's a huge relief for me to hear that its possible to step up and overcome, despite how hard it may be. Thanks for making my day a little easier. Seriously, I appreciate it.

| Health & Support | Is this the ED? | Dec 29 2008 18:10 (UTC) |

You are worth so much more than the routine you prescribe yourself. It seems like over the past couple of weeks you've played with the idea of freedom and happiness. Whos to say you cant play with it a little longer? As far as occupying yourself, what do you think you would be doing if you knew EVERYTHING about calories, macronutrients, etc? Chances are, you already do, and like me you had to re-read everything to reassure the ED everything was "in order". Human beings dont deserve this. |

| Fitness | Protein requirement | Dec 29 2008 05:17 (UTC) |

I like the real food approach myself. So in my case I'm all about the meats (like you said), eggs and their whites, JERKY!!! string cheese, cottage cheese, ants, cicadas, earthworms........just kidding. Those are really the best. I consider beans, yogurt, nuts and seeds secondary protein sources as protein isnt really their main macronutrient. I avoid soy and such for thyroid, endocrine, and environmental/political reasons. (Sorry I'm really opinionated about the stuff.) |

| Weight Loss | The Warrior Diet? | Dec 28 2008 23:19 (UTC) |
28 |
I'm all for the Warrior Diet. I eat this way as a lifestyle and I love it. My body looks tough and strong, My mind is clear, I have tons of free time during the day, I eat until im completely satisfied at night. It takes a while to get used to, for sure, but once you are used to it, it feels AWESOME. Totally worth it. During the day it feels like I have endless energy. Definitely enough to work out as hard as I want to. This is a very hedonistic diet. I like it because it acknowledges the pleasures of something as simple as nourishment. It's awesome. Message me if you want more info. |

You are worth more than a number. Your value extends beyond what is put in your mouth. Your self perception has no place in the eyes of others. I truly mean it. Having said that, anxiety and plans of action have done nothing but shove me into relapse. Its important to understand that those 5 pounds seriously dont do anything to alter your appearance, and that anything drastic is dangerous. Try and maintain for a while, see how it feels. If its still uncomfortable, I would talk to your therapist about it, as he/she probably knows what parts of your ED are lingering more than anybody on CC. |

When my muscles are sore, I sill work them. I just dont work them to failure or push those muscle groups (the main cause of said soreness). Its okay to try and go a rep or a minute before failure. Remember to respect yourself.

| Fitness | Is Yoga even really worth it? | Dec 25 2008 23:39 (UTC) |
1 |
Yoga is more of a functional and spiritual excercise in my opinion. By functional I mean it will get muscles used to moving in meaningful ways, and become more functional. Everything has its purpose, I think it would be a cool idea to mix weight lifting and yoga on some days and cardio and yoga on the others. |

| Weight Loss | Manly meal? | Dec 25 2008 23:33 (UTC) |

I myself cant stand constant feeding throughout the day. It distracts my mind with the constant mini rewards of food and the subsequent blood sugar ups and downs, and I never feel truly full and satisfied anyways. I suggest you look into Ori Hofmeklers Warrior Diet. I've been on it for the majority of the year and it is AWESOME. Coming from an eating disordered background it helped me develop a healthy relationship with food, not to mention boost my lean mass while keeping fat mass at a minimum. Some people like eating big. The warrior diet is for those people. Trust me, check it out. |

| Health & Support | how do i tell my family ive got anorexia? | Dec 25 2008 23:29 (UTC) |
|
What every anorexic must know is that their family loves them very much. Imagine if you will that your child suddenly stopped going out as much, seems listless, starts wasting away, becomes chronically depressed, and shows nothing but a blank chalkboard for emotions. I bet we all would start suspecting alot of things, and unfortunately (in my opinion due to the corporate media's reportings on anorexia) an eating disorder will seem like the most ridiculous cause to someone who is least expecting it. Another thing to know is that eating disorders in themselves may very well be as ridiculous as those without them make them out to be. Keep this in the back of your head when you are letting your parents know, try and be mindful of the perspective they are coming from. Fortunately my mom already suspected I had anorexia, so it was easy to reach an agreement that I needed help and that I was not only wasting time, but my health, my life, and my soul. If my mom gave me that "Are you KIDDING me?" look I feared she would, like I figured a boy with anorexia would be treated (after all, thats the look every doctor gave me as I was shivering shirtless on their examining chairs, every rib visible) I would have stated that I am honestly at the end of my rope, I cant take anymore, and I'm trying to reach out to someone for help. I would try and honestly sit down with her, hold her hand, do anything to create an atmosphere of emotional honesty so she might take me seriously when so many other 'professionals' have not. Can you tell I'm bitter? Ha. Just know there is a 90% chance your family will say things that will make you want to explode. No one without an eating disorder can understand the unending pain and suffering of digesting your own soul for nourishment. No one. It is your job to educated your family by coming out so they will be better able to comprehend the situation and help you.
Thats my opinion. Worked for me. |

Basically the stigma is there because aspartame gave rats cancer in super high doses. Of course its bad for you. So is sugar. Which doesnt have calories? There is something I read a while back that states that artificial sweeteners dump insulin into the bloodstream, but again a study I found showed that blood insulin levels of fasting people who only had water and fasting people who only had diet soda were 2% different from each other. I just dont drink it because water is cheaper and more awesome for you. |

| Motivation | how to not binge? | Feb 04 2008 21:16 (UTC) |

If its that bad, dont go home then! Switch up your routine and find someplace else to spend some time for a while. Maybe find a good book at the library and chill there for a little bit. Or go bop around the mall. Maybe treat yourself to a movie. Tomorrow you should really eat three-four balanced meals and snacks to prevent yourself from craving a binge. Restricting will always equal binging, ALWAYS. Even with anorexia. EDIT: Ack sorry completely spaced on the fact that your getting home at 9! What I would do is just go to bed early and get some reeeaaaallllly good sleep (but then again I almost always undersleep so...) Sometimes if theres nothing to do I force myself to write.

| Fitness | Post Workout Moodiness | Feb 04 2008 20:38 (UTC) |

I you are feeling crabby, moody, listless, irritable, not like yourself, foggy, etc. it means you either have low blood sugar, are dehydrated, or both. The thing about loosing weight and excercise is that you have to plan your calorie intake around your workouts so you dont grow pincers and start biting at everyone you know. It happens to people who have anorexia (I know from experience) due to lack of glucose for the brain to thrive off of. Osugrrl, if you are feeling like that constantly it means your calorie intake is a bit too low for your body to handle right. Try upping 100-200 calories to see how you feel then. Losing weight shouldnt make you feel like death! |

| Motivation | three day binge | Feb 04 2008 20:29 (UTC) |
|
30 pounds WOO! Thats awesome. Friday night is a big challenge for me too, so I totally understand where your coming from. What you have to realize is that because youve noticed the pattern, are aware of what its consequences will be if you let it continue, and dislike it greatly, youve already started fixing it, so give yourself some credit :D. Take a bit to sit down and really THINK, QUESTION, PONDER upon exactly why you want food so much on friday night. My reason is more habitual and emotional, my mom would always come home from work on friday nights with food and I rarely got to see her during the week so it was a sort of weekend long family feast where we could be together. Whenever I start eating crazy like that those feelings come back up again. Its different for everyone and the next step for you I think would be to actually figure out exactly why deep down inside it feels good to binge. Because it sure isnt our bodies that are happy with all the food stuffed inside of them.
