| The Lounge | Will you be spending less this Christmas? Ever given/received a really great gift? | Nov 26 2008 04:33 (UTC) |
5 |
Last year we bought the kids a computer, so we'll probably spend less this year than last. At least I hope we will! Best gift I've ever given--my husband is a Legos nut, and years ago I found him this very Lego phone where the keys were like the square pieces and the surface was made of Lego bumps, so you could build things while you talked on the phone. Best gift I've ever gotten--an airline ticket to go visit my very best friend, who moved halfway across the country. |

| The Lounge | Shameless or shameful? | Nov 26 2008 04:27 (UTC) |

Wow, I gotta admit, it never occured to me to be shameful. Particularly when I was preggers with the kids, sometimes there's just no waiting. And I don't see anything wrong with pooing wherever you need to, but Oh Good God, make sure you flush thoroughly when you poo! Please don't "gift" in that fashion! |

| The Lounge | Sex-capades! | Nov 26 2008 04:18 (UTC) |

OK. Not a sex-capade, but a funny penis story. My son (then 2) was very allergic to mosquito bites, and got one right on the tip of his penis. Have you ever seen what happens to a penis when you get a mosquito bite? It swelled up--and out--until the poor lil guy was shaped like a doorknob! Really! Now, not having a penis myself, I had no idea what was happening to my son. I was afraid it was a spider bite or something, so I took him to the doctor. She pulled down his underwear, did a double take, and said, "Whoa." And then she gave me some awesome advice--"try to get him to leave it alone." Yeah, right. What guy of any age could leave THAT alone? |

I'm submitting a grant today, and our tradition is to go drinking after a submission to celebrate. It'll be gin for me. Tanqueray on the rocks, twist of lime. Feels good all the way down! |

Is there room at the bar for me? I'll take a Tanqueray gin on the rocks with a twist of lime. And since it's after noon on a Friday, make mine a double. Here are my carkeys. I'm a real lightweight. Now, could someone please find some Eagles tunes on the karaoke? My workday is essentially done and I feel like singing! |

| The Lounge | Err... dating question. | Nov 10 2008 22:40 (UTC) |

Here's a slightly different take-- My brother's first date with the woman who is now his wife was to my wedding! Nothing like jumping in with both feet, huh? We loved her immediately. And I met my now-husband's family within the first month of our dating. Mind you, we were really young then, but I didn't take it as some sort of test run for an engagement, but rather that he really liked me and wanted the people most important to him to meet me as well. I guess this is a long response to imply that, if you introduce it well, family events don't have to be scary or laden with lots of meaning. And as far as the "where is this going" conversation, I agree with the posters who suggested something very casual that isn't likely to freak him out. I'd try something like, "You know, I'm not really seeing anyone else now that I've met you. And I don't plan on it. How do you feel about that?" But I am definitely a "talk it out, know where I stand" kind of person. Good luck! And enjoy this wonderful, wonderful time! |

Oooh, I understand just how annoying that is! I get them, too. I've had great luck with POTASSIUM SUPPLEMENTS. You can get them at the health food store or probably anywhere that sells vitamin supplements. Potassium is important for smooth muscle movement. Just take them for a couple of days, and it'll go away. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | Readers - what is your "go to" book? | Nov 04 2008 03:50 (UTC) |

The Hobbit. (I just read it aloud to my kids--what a kick that was!) I've reread LoTR trilogy probably 5 times, but not as often as The Hobbit. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. The Edge by Dick Francis. Love his mysteries, and this one is my favorite. And when I just want to go away, any of Jennifer Cruisie's chick lit books. |

I'll be going as an exasperated mother trailing behind two kids as they trick or treat. It's not much of a costume, I know, but it's what I've got. At least the weather is going to be great here in the Midwest--upper 50's by evening. Just perfect! |

I agree with Ladybug--Poltergeist always scares me! I was also really scared by Hellraiser--I think because it was just so creepy and I didn't really understand what was going on all the time. And then I love the old 50's horror flicks where some bug gets irradiated in the desert, and the scientist and his lovely assistant (in high heels) has to go save us all from certain destruction. Those are a blast! |

cptbunny--can I share with you that I'm really close to my goal weight, and have pretty darn nice calves (if I do say so myself), and I STILL can't wear a lot of boots. I don't know what the problem is! Sometimes I wonder if it's because I'm not very tall, so my calves get wider before a tall person's calves would, you know what I mean? Anyway, don't despair! You're not alone! |

| The Lounge | Second phone interview... Any advice? | Oct 14 2008 22:21 (UTC) |
1 |
More advice that might sound silly but really works-- 1. Don't do the interview in your pjs. You'll sound as sloppy and casual as you look. Some people even say dress like you're getting interviewed in person, which may be a bit much, but definitely look nice. 2. Stand up. Even walk around. It'll keep your energy up and burn off a bit of nervousness. Not silly advice: 3. Remember that, while you don't want to come off as over the top, you do want to make sure that your energy and enthusiasm come through over the phone. Without the information gained through nonverbal cues (smiling, head nodding, body posture) it can be difficult for both you and the search committee to know how interested the other party is. So don't feel silly explicitly telling them, "This opportunity sounds really exciting" or "I'm really interested in this position." 4. At the end of the interview, do not hesitate to ask them what the next steps are and when you should hear from them again. Search committees have a timeline in mind, but they may forget to share it with you, and knowing (for example) that it'll be a week before they can move on with the search can save you an agonizing week of waiting. It also shows that you're really interested in the position. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | Style question... | Oct 14 2008 22:02 (UTC) |

I was stuck somewhere and read Glamour, or People, or something like that recently while I was waiting, and I saw something in there about it being in style for women and men to wear the same style of boots--kind of an androgynous look. Now, the boots they showed were pull-on, not lace-up, but they were just an example. It seems to me that Docs are very androgynous. SO--sounds like you are actually in style! Whew! That was a long explanation! |

| The Lounge | Yet another question about guys | Oct 14 2008 21:55 (UTC) |
2 |
It seems to me that guys like Guy #1 are so into that type of woman that they end up marrying one. And they're the guy that you look at ten years later and think, why on earth did he marry her? He could have had any girl and he chose her? So, tough as it may be, I agree with the others who say to stay his friend, maybe give him a bit of advice, but don't look for a relationship with him. And Guy #2? I've dated a number of quiet guys, and I strongly suggest that you give it a shot. Not to stereotype, but once they know that you like them, quiet guys can often be very attentive, and very loyal. They don't make a lot of friends, so they're very close to the people they do consider friends. Definitely worth the effort. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | My dog caught, killed and ate a bird last night | Oct 14 2008 21:47 (UTC) |

I was reading to my kids the other night, and noticed that my dog (a Corgi, which is a herding dog, not a hunting dog) was licking something. It was a dead baby bunny! Right there on my bedroom floor! I screamed before I realized what I had done, and then had to cover with the kids. They would have freaked if they knew that Trev had gotten a bunny! I made hubby come and carry it away with the pooper scooper. So yeah--if my herding dog is killing little critters, it's not that surprising that your hunting dog is doing the same. But blech, to quote Peanuts. |

| The Lounge | why do you like him/her? | Oct 14 2008 21:36 (UTC) |

So beyond the awesome shoulders, hot eyes, and great butt--- He's really smart. When I'm with him, I get to think about interesting and important things, and when I talk, he really listens to what I have to say. And I know he's listening, because he asks such careful, thoughtful questions back. (That is so hot, by the way!) And he's really passionate about things that I also care about, like taking care of those who are less fortunate, and making sure all kids have access to high-quality education and healthcare, and trying to leave the world in a better place than it is now. And he reads. And listens to great music. And when he looks at me, something in me resonates like someone plucked a harp string. Hummmmmm. |

| The Lounge | Name one thing that really makes you mad that people do or say to you BECAUSE you're overweight or underweight... | Oct 08 2008 03:46 (UTC) |
7 |
Here's one for you. I had lost a significant amount of weight, and not surprisingly, when I bought new clothes that fit, I got cute ones. I also had a job that allowed me the funds to take a little better care of myself, so I started getting pedicures on a regular basis for summer. And one day over lunch at work, someone said, "Ooh, cute new skirt, hot toes--somebody must have a sweet new boyfriend on the side." I have been married for nearly 20 years, and have two great little kids, and everyone I work with knows that. I did not think the implication that I was about to be unfaithful funny at all. And I was stunned that someone would be so mean because I had lost that weight and was really feeling good about myself. So trust me, the mean comments don't always go away with the weights. TIP: Think a bit about how someone might take your "joke" about their appearance. |

I also have combination skin, so maybe what I use will work. I use a product that I get from a dermatologist called NeoStrata. (It's not a prescription; anyone could go in and buy it.) It's a gel-type product that you massage into wet skin then rinse off with water. It leaves my face feeling very soft, never dry. And my skin looks wonderful. I use it morning and evening. And as a frame of reference, it's also what the dermatologist has my 10-year-old daughter using, because it's Ph balanced and apparently pretty gentle. She loves it, too! |

Here is a picture of my adorable DOG! Trefor is the tri-color corgi (the caramel one is his brother). And I post a pic of my dog because a) he's really cute, b) it lets you know a little about me, and c) I'm still not sure I want a picture of myself up for all the world to see. Kinda wigs me out a bit. Dogz rule! It doesn't matter how crappy my day has been, or who I yelled at, or who I cut off at the intersection, my dog is always delighted to see me. I don't get that kind of unconditional love and loyalty from anyone else (which is probably good--everyone else should expect me to behave better. But I'm glad to get it from him!) |

| The Lounge | Does anyone actually enjoy their job??? | Oct 02 2008 04:21 (UTC) |

I love my job! I get to get up every day and "fight the good fight" to help make sure that kids from underpriviledged backgrounds are prepared to go to college, and children of migrant workers understand what their educational opportunities are, and that teachers are better prepared to teach students whose first language is not English. I kind of wandered into my job. When I finished my last degree, my academic advisor hired me to work with him, and it's been the best thing I've ever done. The advice I give to people is that you never know what skills you're gaining right now that will serve you in the future. A computer program, event planning, project organization--you're learning things that could be just what you need to get the next, right job. Good luck! |

I've whacked my long hair off a couple of times, and it was so worth it! My suggestion would be to go get a couple of those hair style magazines with hundreds of style pictures in them, and take 4 or 5 that you like to your stylist. A good stylist will get an idea of what you want to do, and will be able to tell you if it will work with your hair or not (mine has talked me out of a couple of bad hair decisions over the years, for which I am eternally grateful). Go for it! Have fun! Use a good stylist that you trust, and listen to what they have to say! |
