No, no, no to detox! Unless your doctor orders it for some reason, it's not necessary and in most cases will be ineffective for weight loss. As others have already stated, just eat healthy. I didn't do any detox, didn't take any pills, and didn't resort to any kind of fad diet or surgery and I still managed to lose more then 200 pounds on my own (see before and after pics in my profile). Did I have years of "old stuff" built up in my colon when I was 200 pounds heavier? No! I had a relatively healthy colon; just an unhealthy amount of body fat. |

I have the same problem and a similar picture in my profile gallery. How old are you? If you are still fairly young, then hopefully you still have enough elasticity in your skin that it will snap back a bit with exercise. Unfortunately, at my age (49), I'm going to have to have surgery. By the way, congratulations on your weight loss! Even if you still have excess skin, I'm sure it looks tons better then the excess fat that you did have!!!! We might not be able to get by with wearing short-sleeved shirts just yet, but we can disguise the excess skin with the right clothes. Don't let it get you down; you're doing great!!! EDIT: I just re-read your OP and saw that you are 18. That's great because it means you should still have a lot of elasticity. Regular exercise should help you out tremendously! |

Original Post by moonikins: Not necessarily. If done right, it's the definition of a parent practicing good eating habits. Parents need to set a good example about what they put on the table, and practicing good eating habits. I grew up in an age where you only had a soda one day a week. That was usually on a Saturday or Sunday night as a treat -- the same with ice cream. Eating a fast food meal was also a treat and not the norm. Not surprisingly, back then (1960's), being overweight was being a minority and not the norm. |

I'm in the same boat breakbeat. I've come a LONG way, but now that I'm down to the last 30-40 pounds, it's driving me crazy and sometimes puts me in a state of depression. I have a great exercise routine and eat at a deficit every day, but those last few pounds just aren't coming off. And yes... for me 30-40 are 'a few' considering I've lost more then 230 so far. I know I look pretty darn good compared to where I started, but I still don't feel attractive. I'm definitely healthier, and I feel healthier, and I'm greatful for that, but it would be nice to feel beautiful some days. At my age, it shouldn't matter, but then again, maybe it's because the big 5-0 is looming that I want to have one last go at being sexy. Sigh..... time to hit the gym to work off some of this frustration and depression! |

Lucky you! Go for it! For Minnesota, you still have time to plant tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and the other standard bedding plants. You should even have time to plant a few rows of green beans, sweet corn, indian corn (for decoration this Fall), etc. I'm not sure, but I think for your area you also have time to plant some root veggies such as carrots, radishes, turnips, etc. Here's a link to a great chart provided by the Minnesota Coop Extension. It shows dates and provides other helpful information Happy planting, and enjoyable eating!!!! |

What state do you live in? For some locations, yes it is too late. For others, you might still have time. Do you have a plot already started? If not, you'll need to consider purchasing a tiller, or hiring someone to dig your garden for you, and then you should ideally prep your soil. Another option is a patio garden. That just requires a sunny spot, some good pots, and hearty plants such as tomatoes, peppers, etc. Check to see if you have a Cooperative Extension Service in your area. If so, they have Master Gardeners on hand to answer all your questions and provide you with literature. Another source for gardening is PBS's Victory Garden. And finally..... don't overlook local Farmer's Markets for good fresh produce. All the rewards without the work!

I swapped out over-processed foods for healthier alternatives nearly four years ago now. To see the results, all you have to do is look at my profile and the before and after pics.http://caloriecount.about.com/pics/kaufmkk I still eat some processed foods, but I try to keep it at a minimum. An average day for me is something along this line: Breakfast: High fiber/low sugar cereal with skim milk and a banana or other fruit Lunch: Grilled chicken breast or other lean meat with a big serving of steamed veggies of my choice and a side salad. Sometimes I'll have a light sandwich instead of turkey, avocado, and other fresh veggies. Snack: this could be an apple, raisins, almonds, or other fruits and nuts depending on what sounds good at the time. I'll enjoy these with a cup of hot tea or decaf coffee Dinner: Grilled salmon or other lean meat (watching the portion size), a baked sweet potato, more steamed veggies, maybe a small side of whole grain pasta. Evening Snack: fresh melon, strawberries, mango, or other sweet fruit in season I stopped drinking soda (a diet soda every now and then is a treat) which was rough at first, but I eventually lost my taste for sweet drinks. In addition to helping me with my weight, eating clean (or healthier) has made a huge improvement to my health. As someone living with cancer, this is even more important to me now then just losing the weight. I've found it amazing that I now LOVE the taste of fresh fruits and veggies and lean meat. Fast food and other over-processed foods now give me a tummy ache when I eat them! |

How old are you and how long have you been carrying around the excess weight? Those are a few factors that will determine how much loose skin you will have. I've lost more then 220 pounds so far (strictly through eating right and exercise), and I have excess skin that can only be removed by surgery. But I'm nearly 50 and carried the excess weight for more then 20 years so the elasticity in my skin is shot. (See my profile pic showing the excess skin on my upper arm) I hit the gym a minimum of five days a week but even that won't make the skin snap back into place. By the way, great job on losing those first 60+ pounds! That's wonderful! |

In one of your other posts, you state that you're 21 yrs old 5'4- 95 lbs from 110 going for 85lbs. Seriously; 85 pounds or was that a typo in converting kg to lbs? 85 pounds is far to low even for someone 5'4" Fainting is a symptom of being malnourished. You're experience of fainting even when you were younger could still be a symptom of being malnourished back then. It sounds like you might have an eating disorder. I agree with spoiled_candy that you need to seek advice from a doctor. I doubt that you find what you want here on CC unless it's in the 'Health and Support' or 'Weight Gain' forums. I'm hoping for the best of health for you. |

What I'm seeing here from the OP are all the excuses that actually work at defeating efforts to lose weight. It sounds like you're making every effort to make yourself a victim of all the weight loss excuses out there, jondoefatso. As others have already said, attitude is a big part of winning the weight loss battle. I've yet to see anything positive in any of your posts. I'm hearing you make many of the same excuses that took me from 150 pounds, to 200 pounds, to 300 hundred pounds, and then more then 400 pounds. Every step of the way I was coming up with excuses and lying to myself about why I couldn't lose any weight. Until you do a few months of actual calorie counting, and finding an exercise routine that you don't think of as torture, and be truthful with yourself, you're going to slip slide your way to either staying at the weight you're at, or gaining even more weight. It sounds like you want the 'fast' results that we see on The Biggest Loser. Unless you have plenty of time and money to dedicate to a few months of intense training with experts, those results are going to be pretty darn difficult to achieve. I started out being empathetic with you on here, but now I'm failing to see that you're willing to accept any of the great advice that has been shared with you. There are some well-meaning people on here with a lot of life experience in regard to weight loss. You can choose to take their advice into consideration or continue to make excuses. It's up to you. |

missnadja, can you give us your stats -- height/weight? If you're already at a fairly low BMI, then the 8-10 pounds you want to lose over the next three weeks might be a little difficult. If you're a little bit heavier, then 8-10 is doable.... tough, but doable with effort.

I gave up many times over the course of 20 years. I'd lose, then gain it back many times over to the point where I hit 400 pounds. But then I had this epiphany moment and made that big change that we seem to hear a lot about on CC..... I stopped dieting, and made a lifestyle change. Something in my head just snapped, and food and exercise no longer became the enemy. It sounds like you found yourself in that mode of 'this is torture', which is the death nell for many diet and/or fitness routines. You need to find that balance of calories in/calories out that is right and comfortable for you. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as it seems. I wish I could tell you what the answer is for success, but it's different for each of us. Have you taken time to sit down with a nutritionist and a fitness coach? Without having you write a book, it's hard to tell why you've not had much success. Bummer. |

The warning on their Web site states: Not for individuals under the age of 18. Do not take if pregnant, nursing or have any of the following medical conditions: cardiovascular, liver or kidney disease. Stop taking immediately if you experience irregular heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness, headache or nausea. Consult a physician if symptoms do not subside. Sounds like possible symptoms of speed to me. For the $95 price tag, I'd rather get my stimulants through coffee. Heck.... I'd even trade in the beer calories for chocolate calories.... then I can get my stimulants AND a chocolate fix for about the same amount of calories, and less $$$!!! |

For some people, having a BM only 3 or 4 times a week isn't unusual. That's pretty much the norm for me. But as GI-Jane stated, if it continues for much longer in conjunction with abdominal pains, see a doctor. I eat a healthy diet full of fruits and veggies.... I just don't happen to have a BM every day. But what's normal for me, isn't necessarily normal for others.

A few things to consider..... Are you being good about measuring your food? Are you 'guessing' about a cup of food, or do you actually measure it out? Do you know for sure how many ounces of meat (or whatever) you are eating? Learning about portions and then being honest about it when you log your calories is huge. Are you weighing at the same time of day and wearing the same clothes (preferably you should weigh yourself while undressed)? If you first weighed yourself in the morning, but your last weigh-in was done in the evening, there could be a difference of a few pounds. Is it close to your TOM? If so, you might have a pound or two of added water weight. If you have more then 25 pounds to lose, then you might try to stick to between 1,400 and 1,600 calories for the next two weeks to see what happens. I doubt you've gained any muscle weight. Sometimes the body is just stubborn about letting go of weight, but keep up the good work, and you'll soon start seeing results. And finally, you said "I started dieting again this last week and i am really commited to it." Try to change your attitude..... instead of 'dieting again,' tell yourself that you are making a lifestyle change that you can live with for the rest of your life. This was a biggie for me, and one that paid off in big ways. Stay with it. The next time we hear from you, hopefully we'll be hearing that you've lost 10 pounds!!!! |

| Weight Loss | "Eat Clean Diet" | Jun 02 2009 10:16 (UTC) |

Yay! So glad to see you looking into this approach as opposed to the fasting (hopefully) that you were asking about in another thread. I love Tosca Reno! She's an inspiration to me, and yes, I've looked into her Eat Clean diet plan. It's pretty much the type of diet that I followed to lose all my weight, but I didn't do it quite as structured as she indicates. It's hard for me to follow a day-to-day plan so I adjusted it to fit my lifestyle. I have used several of her Eat Clean recipes and found them to be filling and tasty. Can't beat that combo! As a matter of fact, I used her egg salad recipe last week for a picnic and got rave reviews. C'mon.... egg salad! Who eats egg salad when trying to lose weight? But her version is downright healthy. There are other books out there that provide information about clean eating. I don't know if Tosca's book is any better then some of those, but it does have some good and healthy advice. Tosca's book provides the foundational principles of clean eating while also giving healthy advice for how to eat to get the best benefits from your exercise routine in order to lose fat and increase muscle strength. Nothing wrong with that! I think my profile pics show that clean eating can be very successful. And if that isn't enough, as someone living with cancer, clean eating for me is the ONLY way to go!

| Weight Loss | Alternate Days Fasting!! Anyone want to join?? | Jun 02 2009 10:04 (UTC) |

I'm here as living proof that you don't need supplements, or so-called diet pills, or cleanses, or other forms of 'quick start' weight loss methods such as fasting to win the weight loss battle. I've stuck with a healthy lifestyle change for nearly four years now, going from over 400 pounds, down to a healthier 180 (still slightly overweight) in two years (see profile pics). I did it by sticking to between 1,200 - 1,800 calories per day, and by being active every day. Not once did I fast (with the exception of prior to surgery as mandated by the surgeon), or deprive myself of the nutrition that my body needs. But I did have to change my mental attitude about food and exercise. And more then anything, I had to re-educate myself on nutrition. If someone wants to fast once in a blue moon, I personally don't see the harm. Heck..... how many times have we had the flu and didn't feel like eating for a day or two? Our bodies dealt with it. But when we see a title that says "Alternate Days Fasting! Anyone want to join?" it sends up red flags. I'm not sure what the original post said, but remembering that there are people on here with severe eating disorders, who are looking for affirmation that fasting, or cleanses, or diet pills are good, then that's where a lot of the criticism and negative replies come in on CC. Personally, I'd rather eat at my low end of 1,200 calories occasionally, and enjoy some real food, then to do a fast! I love my food! |

Thank you merylwhite! I'm almost at the point where these 'quick win' weight loss threads have me beat. You can only repeat yourself so often before you wonder if it's doing any good. I guess we have to remember that there are new members coming to CC every day who haven't heard our mantra yet. Once gain..... OTC diet pills, supplements, and other gimmicks for quick weight loss are just that, gimmicks; something put out there by people who just want your money. Very few are FDA approved, and even those have a tendency to provide only temporary results. To jump start your diet, eat clean and exercise. By eat clean, I mean try to cut out as many over-processed foods as possible (nix the excess salt, fat and preservatives), and eat a balanced diet of fruits, veggies, lean protein, etc. If you're sedentary, then start walking! If you're somewhat active, then boost your activity level. The results will be much longer lasting then a supplement. See my profile pics as proof that a clean diet and exercise work.

This might be of interest in regard to this thread: "The intensity of enforcement (of leash laws) varies from city to city and neighborhood to neighborhood. In many places, an owner is unlikely to be cited if the dog really is under voice control and not bothering anyone, even if in technical violation of a leash law. But in some cities, police enforce leash laws strictly, especially if they have received complaints about unleashed dogs in a certain area. Ask about the custom in your neighborhood. A police department may have adopted an informal policy of not issuing citations in the early morning if a dog is under control, but strictly enforcing the leash law in a crowded park where a surfeit of dogs have made it unpleasant or unusable for others." I think I'm going to cry. When did CC become a forum for diet pill users? It's almost like the threads about healthy eating and exercise are being phased out. From what I learned about Decaslim, it is said that it might help with overall health/nutrition (such as a vitamin would), but there is no proof that it helps with weight reduction. I swear I'm going to go into the snake medicine business to make my fortune! Sorry.... I'm in a cynical mood tonight.

Original Post by azirra: Thank you. I was thinking the same thing. Even on CC, I see many of the younger people asking questions that pertain to how to get a better body (better being skinny or thin) and not necessarily healthy. All too often there's little consideration for health in the process. Then again, I've never gone through all the post on CC to do an analysis. I'm much too lazy! Interesting topic to look into, however.
