My sister is naturally very thin! I'm kind of jealous she got those genes and I didn't, but she's had to "deal with it" in her own ways throughout her whole life. A few times, old ladies, strangers, would try to buy her food/give her food!!! She can eat a mountain of food day after day and gain nothing except some extra trips to the bathroom.

Only 2 times she's successfully gained weight. One was strangely, when she spent a semester abroad in Namibia, Africa. She thinks it was because they add a lot of lard to this porridge stuff they eat over there. Also, she was eating a lot of sand. The other time was when she was pregnant. She LOVED finally having some booty, but 2 months after the delivery, there was NOTHING she could do to keep the weight on, no matter how much she ate.

My aunt's the same way. Unfortunately, I have to watch each bite, or I could easily end up a fatty fatty fat fat.

Edit: My aunt is about 50 years old now, with 2 teenage kids. Still tiny. It never caught up to her!

Weight Loss Protein Powder - Bad for weight loss? Creates stomach problems? Apr 06 2008

Yeah, I figured calories were calories. I just started drinking protein because I had a hard time fitting it in, plus I've been working out my muscles with weights in addition to cardio to lower my body fat percentage. My sore muscles were lasting longer than I thought they should, and I figured I didn't have the protein to repair it. I figured a good easy, decently-caloried, low fat way to get protein in was to drink it. This way I don't have to worry about cooking chicken breasts every day or eating too much tuna fish, etc. Plus, my husband has an extreme bean allergy, so they can't be in the house. What are some good ways anyone else gets protein in?

As for porridge, oats, etc: maybe if I'm feeling sassy. I haven't had a problem with feeling too hungry during the day. The only time I feel like I NEED to eat is like around 4 pm between lunch & din, then I have a little cheese & bread, hunger crisis averted!

It seems like a ton of us have really similar stats! This will be awesome because we'll be able to relate pretty well.

Alice- isn't it funny how most coworkers are totally unsupportive if you only need to lose just a little bit of weight? It's like health concerns aren't valid until you get obese. Yesterday I had a coworker say to me, "You're starting to look too skinny. Start eating more, you need to gain some weight so I look skinnier."

And then I found out she just joined weight watchers! Well, good for her! Anyone else have any stories?

Ah! I finally caught a group while it's still fresh! Count me in, too.

5'4" 140 lbs, 22 yo, small frame. I've got 15 lbs to my goal weight, so this will be a great group! I've lost 12 lbs already since February. I'm hoping to get down to 125 eventually. My shortest term goal is down 10 lbs by May 21st. I don't have a ton more to lose, so I'm focusing a lot on lowering my body fat percentage to get toned and good-lookin'. Monday weigh ins sound splendid. I was going for Wednesdays, but I hadn't started yet, so here goes! Woo hoo!

Weight Loss Drinking Water- Myth? Apr 04 2008

I didn't used to drink the 64 oz of water a day until about a month ago. Since I started, I've had a noticeable difference in my skin, like sophcesca! Much softer and even. I've also noticed that it helped me a little with muscle soreness. Hey, maybe it is all a myth, but I'll keep drinking. Feels good & who doesn't like peeing 15 times a day?

I'm 5'4", 140 lbs, small frame with 15" calves. I have teeny ankles, but hey I think my calves look superb. I mean, I still have about 10ish lbs to lose, but everything is decently proportioned. I'm down about 12 lbs, and on my lower legs, it looks like I've only lost fat in the area between the bottom of the calf muscle and the ankle. 15"-16" on 5'4" is probably pretty average, especially w/ a medium frame! Put on some heels in front of the mirror, see if you feel any better!

Haha, whoa.

I admit, dm's initial comment did read a little..what's the word...offensive? Not quite the right word, but everyone gets what I mean. I think that if I wrote a note to my hubby, "Hey sweety, I think there's something wrong with you because you're not eating enough" he'd get kind of defensive about it, really. But hey, it can be tough to put across your actual meanings in text format. No worries, dm. Actually, my husband did have ulcers (the non bacterial kind), so he might have some scarring in his stomach that keeps him from eating a lot? I'm not sure...I'm going to ask if maybe that's an issue...

Good idea on the drinks...next time I go to Costco I can pick up some juice and meal bars. I know he loves snapple...too sugary, though? And some trail mix? With lots of nuts and m & ms? Good idea!!!

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Weight Loss 5'4'', 145 pounds, size?? Mar 26 2008

Hey, I'm 5'4", 141 lbs, 22 years old. Pretty comparable! I wear 8/10 in pants, but closer to a 10, 8 is still kind of tight on me. I carry a lot of weight in the booty-area, though. As for tops and dresses, I go size 8 or medium pretty consistently, sometimes a 6, sometimes a 10, depending what's on the clearance rack and how much I like the shirt. Ha! I can't do a small size shirt yet, unless it's running big, quiiite yet. Still too tight.

I bet you are pretty lean if you can fit into a 7/8 and small shirt at 145 lbs! Just remember, "correct weight" is all relative. If you're super fit and you like what you see in the mirror, who cares what the scale says.

It's helps to know that people understand what my husband is going through! It's true that food is the last thing on his mind, as unhealthy is that sounds. That's why I'm trying to figure out ways to pack in the fuel FOR him, so he doesn't (haha) "waste away" while he's focusing on school stuff.

Original Post by cellophane_star:

"I already switched him to whole milk, too."

I don't think that's necessary. Whole milk has about the same calories as 2% milk but it has a lot more unhealthy, saturated fat.

Really? Crap, I didn't know that. If he is burning it all anyways, will the saturated fat harm him? I just thought, the more fat, the more calories, the better.

Thanks for all the replies! I absolutely agree he needs to prioritize food better...I try not to nag so much as just say I'm worried about him and ask what I can do to help him eat on the go. Haha, unfortunately, the money ISN'T great, but I suppose it will be eventually. He's going to school to become an airplane mechanic during the day, which will eventually pay off. But at night he works his butt off at a restaurant because unfortunately, I can't pay all the bills working full time.

GRANOLA! Perfect idea! He likes granola, so I bet I could convince him to do that. I already switched him to whole milk, too.

I made up a couple frozen dinners & added oil and shredded cheese to them. Hopefully that will up the cals at least a little bit. I have a tough time upping the amount because he has a hard time eating a lot of volume in the short period of time he has to eat. Maybe I can convince him to "train" and stretch his gut a little more.

I've thought about those athletic food bars, but they seem to be pretty expensive. Does anyone know of any places where I can buy them for cheaper? Coupons, etc?

Weight Loss What was your victory today? Mar 26 2008

Ah, my victory? I have two for today.

One, I jumped back into working out after 6 full days of no exercise due to life-junk (flu, anxiety, TTOM, sorest muscles ever, etc) I wasn't sure if I was supposed to work out, as I'm not quite over the illness, but I easily could have taken that 6 day break and turned it into a 6 month break. I even did HIIT for 20 minutes. Woot! Go me.

Two, I said no to butter.

I have this AWFUL picture of me at my highest weight that my husband took...It's thanksgiving day or something, I'm hunched over chopping onions, I'm in a too-tight t-shirt with a wet spot on the belly from washing dishes, shorts with a too-tight waistband, tummy over the top, oily hair, and to to give the picture its terrible crowning glory, I'm wearing children's neon green & blue swim goggles to keep myself from crying while chopping onions... Worst picture ever.

EDIT: I just looked at the picture, and the wet spot is on one of my breasts, even worse.

I'm no expert, but my advice is to be consistent. If you do midnight snacking often, I'd say pick either tonight or tomorrow and stick to it. I find it easier to base "days" on when I wake up to when I go to bed. As long as you keep it the same, everything should round out, right?

Weight Loss It's late--should I eat today's calories? Mar 14 2008

Awesome question! Too bad I don't know the answer: I have wondered the exact same thing a lot of times over the past couple of weeks. I find myself short on calories, even tonight... I'm at 950ish for the day, but it IS late...I don't really feel like eating, but I could do something high-cal, low volume? But to eat what I'm not hungry?

Maybe if people see that more than 1 person wants advice on this topic, they'll be quicker to respond! Wink

Weight Loss "Change up" your routine to break out of a plateau? Mar 06 2008
19:14 (UTC)

I'm 22 years old, 142ish lbs (was 152, woo hoo go me!) , 5'3.5" with a small frame. I've been stuck hovering between 142.8 and 143.4 for almost a week, when I had been dropping about 1.5-2 lbs per week. I think my BMR is something around 1500, but the whole BMR thing is kind of confusing.

I am really thinking about adding weights, but I'm shy because I'm clueless about it and the machines in the fitness room of my apt complex are intimidating and possibly broken/missing parts (but I wouldn't know ha!)

On my machine cardio, I usually do the "hill interval" or "weight loss" preset workouts that automatically change up the resistance. Does that count as steady pace? During the easy low resistance parts, I feel like "ah, okay" and on the high resistance segments, I think "Ho'boy, here comes." I kinda huff & puff and wonder when it will get easy again. I'll have to check out the fitness forums tonight and see if I can learn something new.

I've heard of zig-zagging, but I haven't buckled down and done it because my schedule sets me eating veerrry similar things every day. The variable of course is always dinner, but I feel like junk eating a buttload at night. It reminds me of my poor eating habits before. Any tips?

(BTW, thanks for the great tips so far!!!!! I'm feeling excited to kick this "plateau" in the butt and get moving again!!!)

Weight Loss "Change up" your routine to break out of a plateau? Mar 06 2008

Hmm...If that little of a change seems to be enough, maybe my workouts are varied as it is. This is my usual weekly routine:

Sunday- 1.5 hour brisk walking the dog

Monday- 25 minutes moderate effort on the elliptical

Tuesday -  20 minutes bike, 10 minutes elliptical

Wednesday- 1.5 hour brisk walking the dog

Thursday- A chill out day

Friday - 20 minutes on the elliptical (if i have time)

Saturday - 30 minutes elliptical, 15 minutes bike, 10 minutes treadmill

I've also been reading in other threads to add weights. I'm thinking about that too. I try to eat at least 1200/day, but sometimes it's hard. Should I move up to 1400? I don't really feel like my workouts are super-intense, so I'm not sure what the appropriate calorie increase would be. I've lost 10 lbs so far! I just don't want to have it all halt!

Young Calorie Counters this site seems to be all about LOSING weight. Feb 28 2008

I'm no expert, but I think the site gives a calorie estimate for the average of people with certain height/weights/frames etc... But everyone's metabolism is different. My husband for example eats and eats and still has a really hard time gaining any weight! He seems to lose weight like it's nothing (and he really doesn't have anything to lose). You might just have a ridiculously fast metabolism like my husband...the only way he has ever been successful in gaining weight is by consuming mass amounts of protein in addition to his regular diet along with daily weight lifting/training.

You are also still pretty young, so chances are, you haven't grown to your full weight yet. I'd suggest eating healthy foods right now to get in the good habit for the rest of your life. A lot of the fatty junk food out there is loaded with weird chemicals that can actually keep your body from absorbing nutrients properly, which I guess can stunt your growth...

But like I said, not an expert here...

Weight Loss That tummy dent! What is it from? Can I get rid of it? Feb 09 2008
01:04 (UTC)
Oh no! To jenmcc, I ABSOULUTELY know there is much more room for improvement with diet and exercise! I just started this week :)! As for surgery, though it's fine for some people, I don't think I'd ever do it... There are so many more important issues to worry about aside from the tummy dent. I've always had it, so it's no biggy, just one of those little "things" that everyone has about one's own body. If it goes away as I get healthier, awesome, but if not, meh. There's no way anyone should consider themselves a failure if they're healthier and fitter through hard work, even if the dent never disappears. Besides, no one really sees it! Well, at any rate, I'm going to try to reduce it just by lowering my body fat. Maybe I'll journal about it and post photos on my progress. LOL a tummy dent diary.

I fixed the link...I didn't realize the forums don't show pictures. Sorry!

I hate ab workouts, too! They're just a necessary evil if I want to get rid of that tummy dent, though. So I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one...  I wonder if it's possible that the dent was created by my pants waist. That's my husband's theory, but I'm skeptical because I've always worn my pants a little higher than the dent.

Our silly bodies and where they decide to store fat....always an enigma. I think I'd be so much better proportioned if I was "fattened" in a flat spread! Anyways, a few months and I (hopefully) won't have to worry about it :)
