I quit 3/28/08 and haven't smoked since. Smoked for a ton of years about a pack a day. I used Quitnet.com for a while just to read about everyone else feeling as crappy as I did. I used the patches but when I thought about it, I didn't want to have to give something else up later so I stopped after the first week and went cold turkey. Try and listen to you body because depending on how long you have smoked it will go through a lot of changes. For stupid comfort I used cheap straws. I would cut them in half and chew on them until my jaw would hurt then I would take it out and twist it until it couldn't take anymore and I would start a new one. I kept them in my purse, my car and by the computer and tv. For food cravings I ate alot of the 100 calorie packages, first couple of weeks every time I wanted a cigarette I would eat one, then after that I would ween myself off, every hour, then every 2 hours then you just forget about it. Keep tons of gum in your car, try to avoid the bars and smoking locations. I thought I would never be able to drink again but I do, funny though I drink less now. Not sure if they have anything to do with each other. Find something to keep your hands busy. I learned how to knit and my house was the cleanest it has ever been. Just know your mind will try and talk you back into smoking, just like dieting but worse. I wish for you strength to overcome this. Schell |

| Weight Loss | Smoking and weight loss | Apr 11 2008 21:48 (UTC) |

Funny this should come up today. I have been smoke free for 14 days today. My journey started in January, I wanted to have a healthier lifestyle. I never quit smoking before but everytime I would start to think about it I would have all these excuses, can't drink, gain weight... So I decided to take away all the excuses before I quit. Lose wieght and quit drinking. So on January 2nd, I cut out all the fast food and started counting the calories. I progressed to cutting alcohol (after the superbowl of course). I started liking the way I felt and wanted to improve so in February I joined and gym and started running on the treadmill. Things just progressed from there. I couldn't be totally healthy with that cigarette sticking out of my mouth. So at the end of February I gave myself a quit date of 4/1/08. I didn't try and talk myself out of it, it is just something that I wanted to do. Now mind you it was not easy. The hardest thing I have ever had to do. I started with the patch on 3/28/08 (didn't think starting April Fools day was the brightest thing to do) The first 2 days Sat/Sun were a breeze, I could keep myself busy. Monday went to "hell in a handbasket" The next 7 days were the worst. I chewed on a box of straws, toothpicks and anything else I could get my hands on. I did eat but I got a lot of encouragement from Quitnet.com. Others going through the exact same thing. I stopped the patch this monday. I don't want to have to give up another habit in 3 months. So I am going for the gum theory. I just chew a piece of gum when I want a cigarette. Right now is right after I eat. I have snacked more and go over my calories sometimes but I lost the weight (25 lbs) just for this reason. So if I gain 10,15,20 I know I can lose it again. Can not be harder than what I am going through now. Here would be my recomendations: Pick a good time of the month for you to quit. See if you have anything coming up that can be changed or cancelled. Sometimes I felt a little out there mentally so know what you have coming up. Find something to replace you smoking times, in the morning with coffee I now log all my calories from the day before on CC, after my meals I clean something, anything. I cleaned my chair legs after lunch today. Just keep busy when you can and when can't just realize this is the best thing you can do for yourself and it will get better. Good luck. Schell |

| Weight Loss | New member, beginning to feel sick on calorie limit? Looking for advice... | Mar 27 2008 21:19 (UTC) |

The website recommends 1200 for me also but everything I read shows that is way to low. What I did is found my what my bmr is. You can use this website or find another one http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators /basal/basal.html Once you get that figure which is the calories you use doing nothing, just breathing, you then need to times that number by your activity level. I set my as sendantary and then add my workout calories on the days I work out http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ harris-benedict-equation/ Now once that is done, you now know how many calories your burn. They recomend losing 1 to 2 calories a week, so take that final number and minus either 500 for 1 calorie or 1000 for 2. My numbers are set for 1500 on non workout days and 1800 for workout days. Kind of confusing but knowing at least how many calories your body needs to perform properly is the best way to start finding that perfect number. Good luck. Schell |

My numbers are higher on this chart. I'm wondering if it is because the study was based in 1979. My husband still believes that the Health Care Industry is lowering these numbers for their own benefit. Try this website to see if your numbers are different. http://www.dietitian.com/calcbody.php

Use to fly a lot when I was 220lbs. I always requested a window seat. That way you can lean against the cabin to give you a little bit more room. Center seat is definately the worse. Being shoulder to shoulder with people always made me feel more uncomfortable. S. |

I would be curious about that also. At my gym everyone is on the elipital, you have to sometimes wait to get a machine, but not a sole on the the treadmills. I end up doing the treadmills because I hate waiting for anything. S.

| Weight Loss | I've been gaining, and no idea why?! | Mar 15 2008 23:40 (UTC) |

I felt the same way. My brain has been programmed to believe the more I eat the more weight I will gain. The only thing I can give you is my experience. I started this diet on 1/2/08 eating between 1000-1200 calories a day and not working out. I lost a lot the first couple of weeks (water weight) then averaged about 2lbs a week. I found this sight in February and really started to get into the healthy aspect of what I was doing and not just losing the weight. Devoured everything I could read on the Internet and read all the post here and decided that yes I may be losing weight but I wasn't doing it properly. Since I want this to be a lifetime commitment I tried to change the way I think. I started a gym, just a small town Y and would work out but I still was only eating 1200 calories a day no matter how I long I worked out. Then something hit me and I started to increase my calories. So for the first week I went to 1300 a day, second week 1400 a day just increasing 100 by the week. All during the period of increasing my calories I still averaged 2 lbs a week. Truly to my surprise. I just recently started the zig zag diet and changing my workout schedule. I do believe my mind is trying to fight me on this all the way so if I can keep it guessing maybe by the time it figures out what I'm doing I'll be at my goal. Yesterday my zig zag calorie total was 1805. I ate 1801 and woke up this morning 1 lb lighter. Try increasing your calories at your own speed and see how that works. Good luck. Schell |

My favorite buy me gift when I hit a goal was a nice pair of designer sunglasses. Everytime I put them on I remember I have these because I hit a goal and have changed my lifestyle. I believe in something as a gift to make you feel better about yourself. My next goal I get a day at the hair salon. Schell |

I would love to be organized. I try, I get into a funk and spend a weekend putting everyting in a place, what I believe to be organized. But the minute I need something after that, I can't find it, or I spend hours pulling everyting apart looking for it. Very fustrating. Schell |

Lilreenz, I think I qualify for doing too much activity too fast. I keep forgetting I'm older now. I have high arches too, I purchased an arch support. I've had the support for over a week now and I can now get up to 4.0 on the treadmill without any pain. Anything over 4.0 the pain starts so I'm going to take it more slowly this time. I also read to try and relieve the pain, loosen the ties on your shoes, smaller strides and walk heel to toe. Yeah you should see me on the treadmill, all that thinking about walking and I don't even realize how long I've been on the darn thing. Funny part is that when I'm on the treadmill without shoes, no pain at all. So at least I know where the problem is. Schell

I turn into a hoover and a B#$@! 7 days before. I know the morning it starts, all I can think about is food. Chocolate is definitely my favorite. I am then blessed with the 2 days before I don't want to eat a thing but will cry over anything and everything. And the process ends with me turning back to the human that I believe I am. I guess I should be lucky that I have 2 full weeks of being normal a month. Schell |

kscout makes great points. I didn't even start exercising until after a month I was on the diet. Too much for my brain to handle giving up fast food and beer. Those were my down falls. After the first month I was feeling better about myself and it was easier to get my but to the gym. Now I actually enjoy going, maybe for the only reason is that I get to eat more that day. Hang in there, try just looking at the day your in and making the best of that day! Schell |

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but I went to this site and under Calculators - Healthy Body Calculator, filled out the survey and it gave me what I need to lose weight. How may grams of protein, carbs, fat, cholesterol. I had no clue before. I use these number to analyze my days. I actually found out that I was eating pretty good but wasn't getting enought vitamins. schell |

I know how you feel but trust me it will get better. Hey maybe we aren't the types to drop of the lbs right away but think about it outside of the losing weight aspect. Your eating better and excercising. Have goals that reward youself for those accomplishments. When I first started I would reward myself something small for each week that I didn't eat fast food. Since January I'm now eating healthier than I have my whole life. Even when I screw up, it is seriously better than before. Then I finally went and joined a gym. A very big deal for me. Now I have to set small goals for working out. Find something good about what your doing, not just the weight loss, and treasure those accomplishments. Good luck. Schell |

I'm not sure what might be happening in your throat but have you been on a cruise recently? They have become very paranoid of illnesses on the boat and I am not sure how they would react to something I don't think the doctors would probably be able to diagnose. Recently my father returned from a cruise to Mexico and the Cruise line had people confined to their rooms just for the flu. Good luck to you.

This is too funny. I was trying to figure out the same thing last night. I worked out to Gilad's buns and abs then also Ballet Strength with Jennifer Galardi. I broke a sweat but I had no clue how many calories I burned so I went on the lower side and called it Calisthenics - Home exercise for 30 minutes. I loved the Ballet one, it definately stretches you out without being too difficult. Schell |

Here is a reply from a moderator on another post: The EAT meter TOP number shows the number of calories you have selected as your target goal (in your account settings -- you can change it) The EAT meter BOTTOM number reflects the calories you are logging into your food log. The BURN meter TOP number is the total estimated calories you burn based on your age, height, current weight, gender, and activity level -- if you set yourself as "sedentary" and then add in your activity calories -- those are added into the TOP number. The BURN meter BOTTOM number shows how many calories you have burned at the moment you are looking at the meter. This number starts at 0 at midnight, reflects all the calories you burned throughout the night while sleeping, all the calories you burn just by living, and calories normally expended at your listed activity level. When (If) you add in activity minutes -- it will also reflect that added to the total. Hope this helps. |

I had to give up the Lean Cuisines recently. I loved the Panini's for lunch because they were good and easy, but it just wasn't enough for me. I was always hungry after those meals. Now I have have either a vegagetable sandwich or a tuna salad for lunch with some sort of fruit and water. Now I have to remind myself to snack later on the afternoon. Good luck. Schell |

I also overcame the 200lb mark a month ago. I can't describe the feeling except to say that it was the best. Jumped around for 10 minutes, up and down the hallway. Now I'm at 192 eying the 190lb mark. Bloody number is driving me crazy. Keep up the good work and it will definitely be worth the wait. Schell |

I personally loved it steamed. My favorite meal with asparagus is I cook a piece of chicken breast (seasoned to your liking) in a skillet with sliced onions, brown the chicken on both sides. Once it is browned (about 5 minutes on each side at medium heat) I add 1/2 cup of no salt chicken broth and cut up asparagus. Cover the skillet and cook at low/med heat for another 15 minutes. The broth takes the pieces from the browned chicken and makes a nice sauce. I eat this over brown rice. MMMMM Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight. Off the store. Schell
