german12 - welcome to the group.

I liked your words of wisdom and don't listen to Donna - if you get off track she can get her boot out and be pretty mean....just kidding - I love her and wish I was going to Kansas too.

You better believe it about Donna.

She's tracked me down yet again and here I go again. Been here, done it, didn't quite get the T shirt but made a good attempt at it, if only I could have hung in there!!!

I'm here to give it another go - after putting back all that I lost in late 2007 early 2008.

I need to do this for myself - my health and confidence are suffering.

Where did I go wrong? I stopped watching what I ate and lost my way.

But I'm BACK!

Dess, Hope Curves is part of your routine.

Be Healthy,

Marie

 Hi all,

Marie: I go to Curves 3 times a week and they reckon that a half hour session burns approx 350 cals, it is something I actually enjoy and it is exercise I wouldn't do otherwise so I hope it is helpful. I had a long period over the holiday that I didn't go because of illness but I am now back into the groove.

I also swim twice a week (1/2 hr concentrated breast stroke) each time and I feel the benefit of that as well. I walk maybe twice a week as well usually for about an hour at a steady pace (around 3 - 3.5 miles each time). Having claimed all this it is only in the last two weeks that I've been really good - so am showing no benefits as yet (i.e. weight loss but am certainly firming up again).

How oh how do I learn to have more discipline in my eating ????????? That is what is really letting and getting me down at the moment. I can be oh so good for days and then totally destroy all good done in one night. I know I should have the strength to say no but I don't. It has always been my problem and from where I'm looking it always will.

Bad day, bad week but good intentions as ever.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the encouragement, it really does help.

I have had a good start to this month and am hoping that I will be able to carry it forward. I have emptied the cupboard of all but the essentials and my mind set is good, if I don't sabotage myself as I usually do then who knows what I can achieve?

Hi everyone, sorry it's been a week or two since I checked in, I must be in a bad spot (health wise) just at the moment, what with shingles just before christmas and then I caught one "son of a b" cold two weeks ago and it put me off my feet for a week and I still have sinus problems that just will not shift, so I've been pretty miserable and disinterested in life in general - BUT I AM ON THE MEND!!!.

Margie - nice to meet you, I haven't yet had a chance to check out your credentials but if Donna vouches for you then you gotta be OK Laughing. And I too enjoyed reading the Geese link that Donna posted.

Donna - I was sorry to read about the passing of your friend but she is now at peace.

Marie - My grandbabies are no longer babies - well they are - but they just grow so fast and of course they are the most beautiful boys that have lived -  thats what any granny will say isn't it.Wink Thank you for asking, I'm just so thankful that they are happy and healthy.

Now down to the real reason that we are here, I haven't been on the scales for nearly two weeks so I don't know if I have lost weight or not this past two weeks but a work colleague commented today that she thought I had lost some wight so perhaps I will try the scales in the morning! I am making a concerted effort to drink more water and eat less and just this week I have started back into Curves so (singing badly)"Here we go once again down that long and winding road". I know I can do it!

Donna - your piece about the programme is very interesting and I have lost track of the number of times that I have read that "diets" do not work and that we should be concentrating on lifestyle changes.

The one change that I really have to concentrate on is evening eating - from dinner at 6.30 - 7pm to bedtime I just want to eat all the time and it's not because I'm hungry it's becuase I'm bored but I don't have the willpower to do anything about it at the moment. I am very aware of it and have recently tried to eat only apples or other fruit but I nearly always give in and eat cookies or something equally NASTY.

Dess—oh Dess come out where ever you are.  And Jenika she got to goal and ran off to show off her skinny self.

OK pep talk.

Start where you are

Hi Donna and thanks for hunting me down, it's the usual story, you all know it. Lost the weight last year and gained it back so am back to my starting weight at this time last year. We all know the reason - the tempting food in hand -the elbow bends - the mouth opens - and low and behold 14lbs regained.
I had already made up my mind to do something about it (I went swimming last night and all the holiday goodies are gone) when up pops Donna (well an e-mail from her actually) so here I am.
It's good to be back and with some willpower back on track to losing at least 50lbs before August (26 weeks x 2lbs a week) should be possible?

All help, advice and encouragement welcomed.

Hi to everyone that remembers me and to you Loui welcome.

Cath you all tomorrow, Regards Dess

My new reslove last just a matter of hours yesterday as I indulged in 1800+ Cals and my activities were only at 2100 but am still in the positive frame of mind and know I need to get back in line again. I find that using the counters give me a reality check and I don't try to fool myself that I'm eating correctly when in fact I'm tucking into cookies.

Penny- looks like we will have to go pull the rest of the gals back here as soon as the snow starts blowing. Hope they have this place as their winter home.

Keep the firplace burning we will be back.

Well count me in as another one back to the fold.

Donna - you were correct about the snow - it's started already here in Ireland. Just a freak storm (we hope) it's been 25 years since we had snow this early in the year. Glad your enjoying the Wii and that it works for you.

I'm in the same boat as Penny back to nearly  my original weight(not quite, still 4-5lbs lighter). So new focus between now and June - I would love to have lost at least 28lbs by then - I need to start getting real again and looking seriously at my portion sizes and my constantly bending elbow and mouth opening syndrome (it's a serious problem I have Laughing ) there always seems to be food of some description in my hand when it happens.

Welcome back every and good luck in all our endeavours. I look forward to some good news, good support and good fun as we journey on.

Hi all - well those that are around.

Donna, thanks for the advice regarding changing routines, eating habits etc. I will give it a go as far as is possible. It is difficult because my days still revolve around a 9 - 5 ( well more like 6 by the time I get home) working day and whatever I can fit in around that and with the evenings starting to draw in it is difficult to go out walking. I have joined a salsa dance class and its one of the most fun and exhausting ways of getting through a bit of exercise.

The eating bit is a little bit more tricky -  because I'm scared that I will fall back into my old habits simply because I can eat more. I need to get back into the swing of logging my daily routines as I have only been putting in my exercise and not my daily activities so perhaps I have actually put my body into starvation mode without even realising it. Anyway I am at least glad I'm not gaining.

I see we are still pretty scarce on the ground girls, where are you all. I hope you haven't all given up - I need your help and support here!
I'm doing all the right things (with only the occassional slip-up) but the scales refuse to move and although I have lost 10 lbs in total ( at one point in the early summer that was 14 lbs) I can't seem to move any more. I'm at a total loss as to what to do next. Do I just hang in there and hope!
I haven't lost my resolve to change and my eating habits are pretty good now but my body seems to have decided that there isn't going to be any more loss! I certainly can't eat much less - I'm averaging 1300 -1400 cals daily and burning 2200 -2300 sometimes more. My body is in good shape and I can see the muscle defination but I'm still way too heavy. Is it just a matter of patience?
I do know that I will never be very slim, my bone structure is too heavy for that but I had hoped to drop a couple of dress sizes. I guess I will just have to persevere and work harder.

My, how we have dwindled. I guess the colder weather and dark evenings haven't yet hit the States.
Marie I hope your jury duty went ok, it's something I have never had to experience as yet and really don't want to have to. I echo your prayers for safety from terrorism.
Donna, you ask about Ibiza - it is a small island off the coast of Spain and a very popular holiday destination for most of the European countries. It offers sunshine (important for us Irish) and good times (even more important for us Irish) so it will basically be a "Girls Night Out" that lasts for three days. With the different age groups that will be going from my elder sister (the future bride's Grandma at 74) and next sister at 72 to friends of the bride in their early 20's it should be an fun time. There will be a total of 15-20 "Girls" (I use that term with my tongue very firmly in my cheek)in all. So Ibiza look out!!!
Back on the track of lifestyle changes - my resolve has returned and I have had a good week. Not a lot of weigh loss but a definate determination and change of mindset. I started Salsa classes last night and had a total shock, I had thought that I was quite fit but I guess this involves a whole new set of muscles and body parts that haven't been benefiting from my workouts, but it was totally fun and I look forward to learning more.

Hope to see some more posting soon. Best wishes to all, De

September already!! The nights are drawing in, the temperature has dropped (well we never did get above 70 degrees anyway) and autumn approaches (it will probably rush in here). My very very worst time of the year. Habitually I will gain 5 - 7 lbs between now and next Spring and thats just how my body re-acts - probably to do with the fact that my lifestyle becomes more sedentary as the bad weather arrives. I am hoping (I really should use "am DETERMINED" here) that I will have the will power to stay active. I know I will keep going to Curves and endeavour to "up the anti" work out wise. It's having the determination to don the wet weather gear and get out there walking in the inevitable rain, that is going to be my problem.
Still, I have a new target date now, my great/grand niece is having her hen (batchelor) party in Ibiza in June and like a fool I have agreed to join the family party, ages range from teens to seventies, so I now have a new goal to aim for. I hope I can hit my target to lose at least 28lbs before then. Don't know about being a "hen" more like an old fowl (fool ??)Laughing but I'm gonna have a ball - well maybe more of a short dance - so look out Ibiza.

Hi everyone, another stray returning to the fold and much needed support. I have had a quick read through the most recent posts to try and catch up with all the news and see that the numbers have dwindled somewhat. It must be nearly a month since I checked in and I have no excuses other than laziness - the same reason that I have gone up by 6.5 lbs. Am sadened and disappointed that I haven't yet got a handle on the " a moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips" theory. But I'm back and what matters is the fact that I haven't given in - as has been my previous habit.

I have been on mainland UK for a week visiting the newest addition to the family - Charlie Richard - born on 22nd July. He is a fine boy and mum and baby are both fine - dad is coping quite well too ( much to my surprise - he's my youngest son so I can say that ).

Down to the finer things - the old habits ( bad evening eating and cravings )are creeping back so I'm hoping that being back here and talking about it will help me exorcise the demons. I have kept up the Curves gym attendance and the lunchtime walks and my daytime eating is generally good, but I now probably have to add something extra as my body seems to have adapted these regimes and yes - I do know - stop eating trash. So, like Penny, I need all your encouragement and suggestions to help me get back on track.

Hi everyone, although there aren't many of us around just now. I suppose we are all just out there enjoying whatever the summer is throwing at us. We have had a fairly good weekend weather wise, at least the sun made an appearance and of course its shirts off and laying prostrate to take in the rays, just makes you feel so much better. But we are back to our normal sunshine and thundery showers today. Wouldn't you know it, just in time for the big Country Music Festival this weekend, so it looks like wellington boots, waterproof trousers and rain coats will be the order of the day and then the sun will come out and we will be going around with our tongues hanging out!!!

Donna: Marie Curie was the woman who discovered that radiation treatment would help to shrink cancerous growths. She was truly a pioneer of this treatment and in the process of dispensing the treatment she died because of over exposure to radiation. In the U.K. and Ireland we have a foundation/trust in her memory and this foundation provides nurses (free of any charges to the family) to help families to care for relatives in the home environment when they get past hospital care or want to be at home near the end of their life. It is a charity that gets huge and very willing support here.

On the topic of weight loss! Well I'm still sticking with the scales showing 208 this morning but yesterday 210.4 - so the hovering continues. I feel good and suprisingly I continue to exercise through choice rather than "oh I have to!".
The "fitflops" are certainly very comfortable and easy to walk in (the toe post takes a little getting used to if it is not the usual form of footwear, which it wasn't for me) and yes I do see a difference in my thighs. Now whether it is down to the shoes or the walking is any ones guess! But I will certainly buy another pair. Unfortunately they don't make a full shoe so what I will do when the colder weather comes back I don't know.

Regards to all, Dess

Penny, fitflops are a toe posted sandal of sorts, they are supposed to have a unique sole that exercises the thigh and butt muscles (sorry I can't remember the proper names for these muscles) and eliminate cellulite. I'm not sure that they do actually work but I have have never had a pair of summer sandals that were quite as comfortable as these. I don't know what I'm going to do when summer is over and I have to go back to wearing ordinary shoes. You can check out the net for them. Yes indeed the busicuits are very good and very hard to resist. It would be fine if I could have only one and be satisified but no if I have one I will have six (480 cals and indigestion to boot). So I have to try and forget they are there.

Hi all and thanks for all the good wishes.

Penny, one of my sons (he has two sons and two step daughters) is in California and the boy (I suppose he can be called a man now!) who has just had the baby is on mainland UK. I get to visit the UK perhaps twice a year and unfortunately the US only once. I keep doing the lottery in the hope that I will be able to afford to vist them more often. Like you I only log any extra activities over and above the every day routines, curves gym, walking, etc.

Donna, I experienced some of that getting down and rolling around on the ground in May when Riley (2yrs old) wanted me to hunt for bugs in the garden with him . Only for a grandchild would I be prepared to do that. But it was funUndecided.

Marie, I hope all goes well for your tests, I'm assuming you live in the east of US and that there is a time difference of 6hrs. If I'm correct you have had and early start this morning. Good luck.

Alice, good to hear that you are settling down in the new job, if I remember right you had some reservations at the beginning. I am very lucky, in the small office I work in the girls are all fairly health conscious so over eating or temptations do not become an issue. But the biscuit tin always whispers to me every time I walk past it and it is sometimes impossible to resist so the only problem I have is my weakness! But the fact that I suffer from reflux quite severly if I eat biscuits, sometimes, only sometimes, puts me off.

Penny it is getting near to my lunch break and I resolve to walk (fast and wearing my fitflops) for 30 mins at lunch time.

I'm a granny AGAIN!!! My youngest son and his partner delivered their first baby. Their son Charlie was born last night at a whacking 8lb 4oz (I'm absolutely amazed cos Sophie is such a tiny girl), Sophie had a rough time but both are doing well this morning.

Another reason for me to get going on this life style change!

Hi everyone, I have been around and watching this space just haven't got a whole lot to write about, I kinda get fed up of coming on and complaining all the time, I suppose that is because I am being weak and really don't want to face that fact!
I'm really at a sticking point right now, I had gotten down to 208 and was comfortable that things were going well - but since returning from my holiday I swing anywhere between 210 and 215 over the period of a week and can't seem to get any lower. Admittedly I had slipped back into some of the old habits (mainly the nightime eating) but have been making a concerted effort to get these under control again. I have kept up my exercise routine, thankfully, otherwise I could have been right back where I started.
Thanks for the concern Donna. As far as enjoying the summer is concerned we have yet to experience that joy, our temperatures are somewhere in the region of the low 70's and we have had hardly any rain this last two days so I guess there is a summer out there somewhere. We did actually hit lucky on Sunday  when Billy and I headed off to watch a Truck rally. It's something that the local radio station runs annually to raise funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Foundation it was well attended with a drive past of 600 + trucks of all shapes and sizes and in these times of high fuel prices it was truly amazing to see them all turn out to support the cause. The weather stayed nice and there was dancing in the streets (literally) and lots of old and new faces to catch up with. We had a good day.

So I am around and keeping up with everyone, just struggling a little at the moment.

We have a holiday weekend here so no work on Monday, haven't got any definate plans but I'm pretty flexible so could end up anywhere. Probably be restricted by the weather and the rising price of fuel (our fuel costs us the equivelant of $10.00 a gallon and you think you got it hard!!!) but I intend to enjoy the day off anyway.

Donna: If ever you get the chance to visit us here in the Emerald Isle you would be very welcome. So get saving and make the trip. Only one life! You as well Marie.
I was fifty years old before I started to travel and since then I have visited Spain and Turkey and in the USA - Maryland, Tennesse and California and of course California will be a regular haunt for me from now on cos of my beautiful grandkids. There won't be any money left for any one when I go and I will have to keep on working to be able to finance these trips but what the heck.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Hi again,

EMG? Sorry I don't know what this means Marie, ( you Yanks with your initialsSmile)  I assume its further diagnosis or is it treatment of some nature. Whatever it is I hope all goes well for you.

Thanks for advice on the meter thing - might just do the same, because my burn starts at 1900 and when I add the exercise it is essential that I eat more than the suggested 1200 cals just to keep the difference between 500 -1000 cals. If I'm calculating correctly that is.

Where do you find the food?  Is it just hanging around in cupboards waiting to be eaten or do you have to make a special trip to get it?

That isn't an unknown scenario. I have actually been known to go to the store ( quite close to home ) and buy candy, donuts, anything, (not just in single packs either) if there is nothing in my cupboards. But thanks to a dear friend and guardian angel on CC I am nearly cured. She threatened me that she would be sitting on my shoulder every time I went in there and watching what I buy. Can you imagine going into the store with this person sitting on your shoulder and tutting every time you pick something up. I'm sure the cashiers thought I was slightly deranged cos I would smile to myself every time I thought of her.Laughing Thanks to her and a little effort on my part I rarely indulge in the manner that I used too and boy do I feel better because of it.
I'm not saying I'm cured but I do it a lot less often. So if you need a 212lb guardian angel just mail me.

Good luck - Dess

Hi all,

OK! OK! I give in Ireland is just the most perfest place on earth (actually it nearly is) a beautiful land, beautiful people Wink, beautiful beer and whiskey and even more beautiful FOOD!. That's the root of my problem, I've developed a taste for all the beautiful food and it's a pity to not be able to indulge Cry.

I'm getting back on track - the body insists I should, the mind knows I should but the mouth sometimes don't listen. Just need to see some shift in the scales to give me that little boost. I'm so impatient Undecided.

A quick question for anyone who knows! Now that I have a regular exercise routine in that I do gym 3 times a week, walk as often as I can and generally move a lot more than I did when I first registered here. Should I now recalculate my burn and intake as doing Light Activity instead of Sedentary as I was at the start? All help and advice appreciated.

Marie: Hope everything goes well with the specialist.

Accountability. This helps me a lot, I join a group and stay in touch with them even if it's only once a week, having some sort of accountability will help you think twice about things.

Good advice, I've lost and gained my way through life and until I joined up with a group of like minded friends here on CC I had just about given up the hope of ever adopting the right attitude. I'm not 100% there yet but with the help and advice of those that are experiencing the same ups and downs as you it becomes easier.

So it’s a very small place you live in? guess I don’t know what a IKEA store is.

BTW IKEA is a great big store with everything you can use in a house.  It's a Swedish company so it has clean Scandinavian designs from cup hooks to furniture.

Penny describes it very well, the only problem I have with the store in that I would like to clear out my home and go there with a very fat cheque book and just refurbish the whole place, guess my partner would have something to say cos he'a a kind of old fashioned guy and grumbles about change. so I have to make do with adding some nik-naks and soft furnishings, but I still managed to spend the full day going round the store.

And yes Ireland is a very small country in context to the USA. An 8/9 hour drive would take you from the northern most point to the southern most point. But it is a very beautiful country and there really are "40 shades of Green" if you know the song Johnny Cash wrote on a visit here. I guess the Green can be attributed to the amount of rain we get and the less than desirable average summer temperatures of mid 60's to low 70's. 75 degrees constitutes a HOT day here and 80 degrees gets a PHEW WHAT A SCORCHER headline. But I guess we wouldn't have the green if we had hotter weather!

Weight Loss How many tries did it take you till you were fully committed to a healthier lifestyle? Jul 04 2008
15:20 (UTC)

Having always been a "big girl" from puberty I never worried too much about my weight until I started having health problems, sure I got fed up when I couldn't buy fashionable clothes over the years but I always made an effort to look good at my size. There has been the occassional attempt to lose weight and the time when I lost more than 14lbs in a short time after an operation, but it always went back with more besides. Ending up at 222lbs at 5' 2".
Then in my forties I started having problems with my blood pressure, medication helped, but I'm now 56 and I've had enough of feeling unwell (in fact really ill), not being able to buy nice clothes, not being fit enough to have fun with my very new grandkids and on February 5th I joined CC. Since then I've had good times and bad times and managed to lose 14lbs and gain back 7 and lose 5 again but I'm determined that this will be my last TRY and will at some point become my way of life without me having to think about it.
It isn't going to be easy or plain sailing by any means, as anyone who has read any of my journal enteries will know. I stumble and fall often but I just have to get back up again and keep going because I want to feel good for whatever time I have left on this earth.
So here's to all of us who have tried, tried and tried again and the very fact that we are still trying, good luck and good health.

Well Phase 2 begins - I have gained some weight back ( no surprise there the rate my jaws were chomping this last month) so I have to knuckle down again. Marta I am a foodaholic ( I know its not a word Laughing) and I really suffer (cravings) when I can't have what I want - but I suffer even more when I eat what I want - so it's a choice between eating my comfort foods or feeling good and the feeling good is getting to be more and more important as I get older so I just have to pull myself into line.
I had stopped using the food log and have just filled in today's and what a surprise I had remembered the individual calories but had forgotten that they all have to be added up. I am also going to up my calorie allowance to 1500 because I am still keeping the exercise routine and that takes daily burn level up so need to narrow the gap between the two.
So Phase 2 begins!

Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't been around for a while seems like I've lost the willpower to keep myself in line, so yet again I climb back on the wagon, seems like I spend more time on my butt on the floor than up on the wagon. I get tired now and again climbing but the need to do it is still important.
You may have noticed that I haven't joined the daily food diary, the reason is obvious, I'm not eating properly and I'm feeling the consequences. I got rid of my scales because they were old and the readings were stupid, anything from 2 - 7 lbs difference every time I stepped on them even when I stepped off and straight back on. I think I will have to invest in a new set as my best results were when I was weighing myself daily. I know this method doesn't work for everyone but it seemed to for me. So am going to buy me a new set this weekend.
My thanks to you all for being there and especially Marie and Rosalee who urge me to do my best. I still exercise regurlarly and have been doing work in my garden this week and as far as I can tell I haven't gained back any of the 14lbs that I originally lost.
Donna sometime back you asked how much more I would like to lose, well if I go by the recomendations another 68 lbs would take me down to 140 but personally I think 154 would be a more ideal weight for me because under that I know I will look ill so I'm aiming for another 54 lbs and I would like to do that before May 2009. Just need to get back on that wagon.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Regards Dess
