I haven't checked in for a while because I have been really bad. I took a break from working out when I had my knee and ankle pain, and I have a bad habit of giving up on dieting when I don't exercise and vice versa. It's horrible, I know. I've gained 6 pounds!!!! Because of my low metabolism it is VERY easy for me to put on weight and very difficult to lose it. So here we go again. I'm going to be really careful when working out this time so I have no excuses to stop. Oh, and I'm increasing my calories to 1600 a day. 1300 was way too low.

WOW....looks like I'm not the only one who took some time "off". Bad news. My little vacation from my diet added 6 lbs to my now giant butt. I didn't work out for over two weeks. I'm starting my routine again today. I just feel like I wasted all of that hard work. Oh well.

mercii21.................try reading that article posted by shandycat. It will explain what you're doing to your body. I've been where you are right now, but I swear to you that starving yourself like that will only make your body hold on to fat. At your age I was the one who could diet for a few weeks and lose 10% of my body weight, but now about a decade later I'm paying for that yo-yo dieting. It is so incredibly difficult for me to lose weight because I've trained my body to hold on to fat. Like hooligan1968 said......start thinking long term.

Also, I think 1150 calories is a little low for you.

Seriously, how do they get through those workouts? I do the Biggest Loser workout dvd's (only 50 min) and I'm dying! I can't imagine 4-6 hours of that. Bob's cardio workout has so many lunges in it that I ended up overdoing it and hurt my knee. I have to take the day off to give my body a break, but it gives me a new found respect for these contestants. Oh, and the 1200 calorie a day diet is no joke either. I'm trying hard though.

I actually just got through 2 months without a drop of alcohol, but the past few weekends I decided once in a while would be ok.......and then there was St. Patty's Day so that was a long weekend. LOL!

I don't think the occasional can of soda with a meal will hurt anyone. The people in these studies were drinking alot more than that.

Way to go on the weight lifting. I've noticed such a major difference in the way my clothes fit since I started weight training. Hope you get to 140. Smile

I'm still stuck at 158-159 (depending on when I weigh myself). I know it's because my metabolism is all screwed up by yo-yo dieting. As long as I stick to 1350 calories and work out every day I JUST KNOW it will change eventually. I'm just stabilizing my metabolism right now and trying to stay positive. I hurt my knee and my ankle today during my workout. I don't know what was wrong with me. I was just off. Luckily tomorrow I can just do strength training so I don't have to put too much pressure on my knees.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Well, I just got through 30 minutes of a Winsor Pilates cardio workout and I twisted my ankle. What is going on with me today? Well, at least I got a decent workout when I combine the two, so I'll try to rest as much as I can and just do strength training tomorrow as planned. I've got a 2 1/2 year old and a 15 month old to take care of, so resting is not exactly easy to do, but I'll try.

Great article shandycat.

I would also like to say that I've heard the same thing about the soy/cancer link. I wouldn't say you would need to avoid it completey, but just try not to make it your main source of protein. Try nuts and legumes instead. Soy products are often over-processed anyway.

I'm convinced that my scale is posessed. It makes me crazy, so I try to weigh myself mid morning every day.........I wake up bloated for some reason. The fat % monitor on mine is even more maddening.

Jennifer........I hear you about the whole sitting on the porch thing, but I think I'm the one who's been a downer for my husband, not the other way around. He looks so lonely out there. Frown

Exactly.............the study was not just done on diet soda but ALL artificial sweeteners. You'd be surprised how much of it we actually consume. I'm having a hard time giving up the sugar-free jello and sugar-free coffee creamer. Frown

I don't mean to offend anyone, but sometimes I look back at my own attitude at that age and wish someone could have gotten through to me to explain how incredibly naive that sort of thinking is. I think it's really easy to believe we know it all. There is nothing wrong with asking for help from someone who knows what they're doing.

Once again......no offense intended. I just felt that her advice was dangerous. Like Clairelaine said. Binge eating is an eating disorder which is a mental illness and needs to be addressed as such.

OK, so I know I caught on to this thread a bit late, but I can totally relate. Drinking sabotages my diet EVERY time. I quit drinking for 2 months and lost 20 lbs. I then rationalized that if it was only a few drinks with my hubby on the weekends it would be ok, right? WRONG! I binge like some sort of posessed manic when I drink. Then the next day I binge again because I feel like I failed so why not? Any of this sound familiar to anyone here?  Well, the problem is that my husband drinks, not heavily, but he has a couple of beers at night. It's the only time we have to spend together and it feels nice to hang out and just relax and have a drink with him. Is it wrong that I enjoy that so much? I mean, we met at a bar! We have this in common. OMG, i think I just admitted that drinking is the only thing we have in common. I don't know if that's sad or funny. I'll go with funny for now.

No drinks last night (and American Idol is just not very entertaining when you're sober)

Original Post by sarahbugs:

and why does the scale go up drastically after a binge?

It's usually a combination of water weight and actual weight gain -- but it's mostly water weight.

Most of us who binge use processed foods, and even the processed foods that don't seem super salty can have a lot of sodium in them.  When the body receives a lot of sodium in a short period of time, it holds onto every bit of water it can so that the electrolytes don't become dangerously imbalanced.

I know that for me, after a binge, if I am patient, almost always the weight comes off over a period of about 4-5 days.  I make the problem worse, though, when I see the higher number on the scale -- freak out -- and binge again -- perpetuating the cycle.

 Ditto everything you just said.

Well, in response to the question about how much they work out and what they eat........

They work out 4-6 hours a day (and sometimes more) and the women eat a 1200 calorie low-glycemic diet. The men add an extra 300 calories.

I am starting to LOVE this show, but that is INSANE!!! No wonder most of them have ended up gaining alot of weight back. It's just not realistic.  It is super entertaining though. I love to see the transformations (minus the saggy skin...LOL!)

thebledx3...........I think it's really sketchy to tell a binge eater that they don't need professional help. I don't want to be mean, but implying that as a 17 year old without any training you can help more than someone who deals with EDs on a professional level every day is very bold and very dangerous. I've been dealing with a binge eating disorder for years and I didn't get help when I should have. I wish I knew sooner how much of a difference therapy can make. I'm sure your heart is in the right place, but your advice is way off.

I totally agree with the previous posts. There were two university studies done this year that both came to the same conclusion. Diet soda drinkers gained more weight than people who drank REGULAR SODA!!! It tricks your mind into thinking you're getting real sugar, but it doesn't back it up with real calories so later in the day your brain catches up with your body and you crave more calories. I thought it was just me. I started gaining weight when I started drinking diet soda (thinking it was better for me than the occasional can of Coke). The problem is that I started drinking way too much of it and by the evening I was starving for real sugar. It was very hard to control the cravings. I've been off it for a few weeks now and I've noticed a huge difference. I do know some people who don't notice much of a difference in their appetite, but I certainly did. I mostly drink water now. I only have soda once or twice a week if I really want it, and I only have it with a meal so I'm not confusing my body with the lack of calories. Does any of that make sense or am I rambling?

It's Isabeau Miller and her website is http://www.rockhardbodysoul.com/ I think it's a bit pricey because it's only two weeks long. How much could you actually lose in two weeks? 5 lbs?? That would be one thousand dollars per pound. I think it would be interesting to hear what she has to say though. Maybe you could learn something that would make it worth the money. It's a toss-up for me.

Can I join you? I'm 28 and I am a stay at home mom to two little girls ages 2 1/2 and 15 months. I was always in pretty good shape but now I weigh 159 lbs. which at 5'5" is not exactly slim. I have lost 20 lbs since I joined this site but I seem to have hit a plateau and could really use the extra motivation to break through it.

I just got the Biggest Loser dvds (which I love!) and I'm doing cardio 3 days a week and weight training on alternating days for a total of 6 workouts a week. I try to take one day off. I'm noticing a difference in body fat percentage but no weight loss yet. The problem is that I have to cook every day and I'm having a hard time not overeating. I'll do great all day and then stuff myself at dinner and swear I'll do better the next day. Does any of this sound familiar?

I'm ready to quit making excuses and start getting serious about losing 20-30 lbs. Actually I'd be happy losing only 10 lbs if I could just get my body fat percentage down in the low to mid 20's. I'm at 33%-34% now. Yuck.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!!! I have already lost 4% body fat in less than 2 weeks. The sculpting dvd is actually really easy for me so I'm on level two now, but I'm still doing level one cardio. I'm just not built for that many lunges LOL! Glad to hear someone else loves these as much as I do (and I'm not even nuts about the show....too extreme)

I think there's a former contestant who is doing a "fitcamp" but it's in Tenn. and it costs 5 grand! I think there are health resorts that are cheaper and have better trainers but it's not a bad idea for those who have less to lose. I'm trying to remember the girl's name. I'll have to look it up.

They work out 4-6 hours (and sometimes more) every day and they are on very low calorie and lower carb diets. I have been doing the Biggest Loser workout dvd's and they do help, but I don't think anyone can expect the kind of results they get on the show by just working out at home. Some of these people are losing half their body weight in just a few months. I am not a doctor, but it seems a bit unhealthy to me. I wouldn't even want to lose weight that quickly. Some of them end up with really saggy skin. Yuck! I really like the dvds though. I've already lost 4% body fat in just a couple of weeks. No weight loss yet, but I'm sure that will follow. I already fit better in my clothes. YAY!

I love this diet. It's not really much of a diet though, just a sensible way to eat. I don't think the idea of 3 square meals a day is that revolutionary. I mean, didn't most people do that for most of the 20th century before we had the obesity epidemic? All in all the rules are pretty basic. Not eating before bed and reducing (not eliminationg) starchy carbs alone will help anyone lose weight. Granted the weight loss is slower, but it's also more lasting, at least for me.
