I think I'm doing alright, but my calorie intake (as calculated by CC) is lower than I would expect.  I'm going to spend this next week paying closer attention to portion size to make sure I'm getting accurate numbers.

What an awesome challenge!  I definitely want in.  I am a couple of days late, though - this is the first day in a LOOONG time that I have logged my food and (lack of) exercise, but I really want to get motivated again.  I will join the 17,500 (5 lbs) group.  Thanks!

Could also be plantar fasciitis (heelspurs). My heels were really sore - first thing in the morning was the worst - and the muscles in my calves tightened up causing pain all through my legs. I went to the doctor and found out I've also got tendonitis, from walking funny to compensate for the pain caused by the heelspurs!! I've got orthotics in my shoes now and I've gone from daily misery to only rarely having any serious pain (the pain returns, but to a much lesser extent than before, when I've had a long day with lots of standing or walking).

Really, it could be lots of things... get it checked out! Something simple like properly fitted orthotics or doing the proper stretches to loosen the affected muscles could make a huge difference to you... but you need the right diagnosis, and the longer you wait, the more damage you could be causing in the long run! For physical challenges, you get 1 point for doing the challenge at all. So if you do the minimum set of 10, you get 1 point. To keep things fair (since some of us can do more than others) you only get 1 point per challenge completion - so you get only 1 point whether you do 10 crunches or 100. Of course, you get major kudos from me if you do more ;)

 

This is good to know...  I'll stop sending you messages that include the number of sets I've done!! Laughing

I teach in a high school, and I know that there is a nurse who comes in once a week to provide completely free, completely confidential health care.  I don't know if there's something like that in the school your friend attends or in your community, but if there is, that might be something to suggest as a way for getting good nutrition and health advice.

Your friend has taken an important step in talking to you.  Since you are best friends, you obviously care very much about her.  Help her as much as she lets you and wants you to, and hopefully she will continue to gain weight in a healthy way.  But, if she starts to lose more weight and won't listen to your concerns, you might need to make a hard decision and tell someone else (like your parents or hers) that you're worried about her health.

I liked your other suggestions as well... but now I've got to get to work and think up some of my own Smile

How about:

  • physical challenge: crunches (sets of 10 - whatever type you like)
  • physical/personal (?) challenge: fruits and veggies (it was part of the February challenge, but I don't see it in the intro this month)
  • physical challenge: stretching (10 min. - or does that count as "structured exercise" for which points are already granted in 15 min. intervals? in which case, disregard this thought)
  • personal challenge: healthy planet (I suggested this pretty late in February, so let's try it again - do something extra to beautify the planet)

Hear hear!  (or is it "here, here"?  This is a group of teachers - settle this one for me, will you?? Wink)

I'm a high school science/biology teacher in southern Ontario.  The staff room and cafeteria are NOT my friends...  but my busy schedule tends to keep me out of those places.  Besides teaching, I coach girls' soccer and I am a staff advisor for our Student Council.

I've been teaching for 8 years - I spent the first one in Leeds, England, earning a few quid and traveling Europe.  The next year I was broke (obviously!) and moved back into my parents' basement and taught in my old high school.  I then found a position in a small rural community in the snow belt (hence my delight at the "snow day") and I've been at the same school ever since.  I was a little thinner when I started there! Wink

It's good to find you all!

Hey, I had (what I think is) a great idea for a personal challenge...  on this journey to make our bodies more healthy, why not take a step to make our planet more healthy too?  So I'm suggesting a personal challenge to do something new/different to be more environmentally friendly.  I don't mean something you have to do every day (I recycle paper, cans, plastics, etc. in my blue box on a daily basis, so I wouldn't count that).  I mean make a new change.  Some suggestions:

  • If you normally drive to work, walk or ride your bike a couple of times a week (I know, for those of us in the northern hemisphere, it's a bad time of year for that kind of thing)
  • Change some incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents
  • Start a vermicomposter in your basement (I promise the worms won't escape!) or a composter outside (if the weather is nice in your part of the world)
  • Buy cold water detergent and/or phosphate-free cleaning products next time you go for groceries
  • Do an online carbon footprint quiz, and try some of the suggestions for reducing your footprint
  • The list goes on and on...
