Here's my recipe when I tried to recreate Clif Nectar bars (VERY similar to Larabars). I found they weren't as 'hard' as the real deal, but very tasty. Next time I would try boiling off more water to make them harder....

Hmm.. I can't speak from experience, but we are TTC and I am scared to death of gaining too much weight when at last I get pregnant, so I'll probably end up behaving in the same way. My plan is to just eat between my maintenance (1900) and my maintenance plus 300, (2200), as per the idea that when pregnant one should eat an extra 300 calories (in the 2nd and 3rd trimester anyway). I'm hoping I won't be hungry beyond that, but if so, I guess I'll just have to listen to my body! What was your experience with your first (assuming by your profile pic and name that you have one already!) |

RE women's bike seats and discomfort. 1. Make sure you are in padded shorts, and women's specific at that - the difference in them being the placement of pad seams and width of pad that is different for men and women. 2. The only saddles I can ride are ones with a hole in the middle - see Selle Italia website models SLC, SLK, Lady, XO. (there are other brands, like Specialized, this is just by way of example) 3. The amount of padding is important re. the amount of time you spend in the saddle. If you are spending longer times, padding can actually be a detriment - because, the padding allows your parts to shift around on every pedal stroke - I find I'm comfortable on LESS padding, and to that end, have always found women's saddles clunky and too padded, and I have always ridden men's race saddles. (in fact, I ride the SLK and pretty much hate everything else I've ever tried) 4. Everyone is different and once you buy and use a saddle it's tough to return. Try to gain some experience on different saddles before committing to buying... |

"Um...protein? Perhaps add some chicken or other lean meat to this." Half a burger, a pile of yogurt, 3 egg whites and 9 ounces of chicken already eaten? And toast? You've had enough protein to sink a battleship and not nearly enough fruit and veg! Your salad idea is perfect. Yum! |

Hi leafsfan, as a fellow GTA'er, I can recommend the Brampton Cycling Club, or the Toronto Bike Network if you want to boost your riding beyond commuting. Both have organized rides around the city - beginner to advanced. As for commuting - the weather is great this week - why not commit to commuting every day, and maybe for one or two days try throwing in an extra loop somewhere on the way home? Boost this over the weeks as you get stronger. Nothing to suggest other than to just get on the bike! For riding longer and longer, make sure your bike fits you properly. oh, and I don't buy the can't bike during college time theory - attire yourself properly and you can bike the GTA and surrounds right into November and from early April without worry of snow! Edit to add: as you lose weight (as per your goals in your profile), you may find you want to raise your saddle a smidgen - especially if you start to get pain in the front of the knees. |

liljdoll, I didn't know there was a benefit from taking pre-natals prior to pregnancy (unless while you are actually trying - that makes sense). My doctor suggests just a multi with a full supplement's worth of folic acid prior to conception. Not sure about the weight gain issue... |

| Vegetarian | Do you know how to cook Tofu ????? | Apr 13 2008 04:12 (UTC) |
7 |
When I started using tofu, I just treated it the way I used to treat chicken - bbq with spices, chopped up in stir fries, breaded tofu fingers, etc. I have never drained it - always used it straight out of the package (with the packing water poured off). I use extra firm mostly, and medium firm for the occasional recipe. Now I also use it in recipes when called for (brownies, tofu balls, etc.). One note is that I find freezing it ruins it - makes it spongy and dry. Flavour wise, marinating is key. There are lots of recipes for marinade on the net - not sure about low sugar/sodium ones though... my fave is teriyaki. I have never baked tofu, but I am going to try based on the comments here! |

thanks shimmercat, I searched on the internet on ethiopian recipes and they called for ground seeds specifically, so I ground the seeds I bought (I used my stone mortar and pestle). I made the recipe tonight and it was really good! I also have 'planted' some seeds to try to grow some of the herb - just for fun! Thanks! |

abaker the commute is wonderful. I did it Mon thru Thurs this week (heavy rain Friday). It chops up to 25 minutes off my public transit ride, and is comparable door to door (maybe a touch longer) than a drive and parking in nearby public lot. It is 'free' (minus the cost of the odd flat tire patch or new tube, and a bit of chain lube), whereas as transit costs me $4.50 round trip and driving costs about $6 with gas and parking). And it is environmentally friendly, and best, it makes you feel great! Your first few times will take a little longer as figure out your gear, what to pack in your bag, where to lock up your bike, etc... but you will soon fall into a routine! |

| Motivation | I cant get enough of sweets... | Apr 11 2008 16:47 (UTC) |

I find my sugar cravings increase with more exercise - could be a sign I'm not eating enough proper food? Having said that though, I do eat sweets everyday. I allot about 100-300 cals per day depending on what else I eat - thus I can have whatever I want, just in small portions. |

I agree with weddingmama - you may not be eating enough calories. I have an athletic build (like you), and I find 15cal x body weight is pretty accurate to determine my maintenance calories with 3 workouts a week (puts you at 15 x 165 = 2475). If you are breastfeeding add 300 per day - 2775. So, a safe deficit of 500 to 750 would put you at 2000-2250 or so per day. If you are not breastfeeding, you should be at 1750-2000 So try logging and try eating this much. Try for a couple of weeks to see results before resetting - give it a chance to work! |

I use pure erythritol - it's the only sugar alcohol that doesn't give you constipation - the way xylitol, the more common sugar alcohol, does. It's great stuff!!! I hate and never use Splenda/Aspartame or anything containing them. But, as with anything, use it in moderation. It has that 'cool' aftertaste (of alcohol) - it's fine used a little at a time - I use it to sweeten my grapefruits or coffee, but I used 2.5 tbsp of it to make a hot chocolate with cocoa and it was too much - tasted really strong alcohol-y and made me feel gross. I have never baked with it - too expensive (I get the organic kind called 'zero'). Edited to add: Its about 70% as sweet as sugar, so you have to use more than you would sugar. |

Original Post by hayleyjayde: YAY!!! *clap* on the eggs note - I eat a vegetarian diet about 95% of the time and so my cholesterol comes only from eggs and cheese and the tiny bit of milk I have (in coffee only about 3 times/wk). From logging over the last two months, my cholesterol comes in at about a third of allowable, so I think you will be fine. Perhaps if you are still concerned, try instead of a two-egg scramble or something, try 1 egg and 2 egg whites. (All the cholesterol in eggs is contained in the yolk). |

I had my homemade pumpkin pie frozen yogurt for breakfast one day last week (really just because I really wanted to make a chocolate frozen yogurt and my freezer can only fit one tub at a time). My hubbie scolded me (kindly), and then went to Starbuck's and had two muffins for breakfast!!!! Comparing later, we realized that my frozen yogurt topped ONE of his muffins in terms of less cals, sat fat and sugar, and more protein and fibre. And he ate TWO of them! (I have to give him credit for ordering the low fat kind, but they are really just as bad IMHO). The point is.... is I'm having frozen yogurt for breakfast more often!!!! |

Probably restaurants change their menus/cooking techniques quite a bit, whereas fast food joint foods are totally regulated. I don't know.. not really a very good excuse... I've been out a few times since cal counting - at an Italian restaurant I ordered pasta with tomato sauce. At a steak house I ordered the soup of the day (carrot ginger) and sides of asparagus and mushrooms (I don't eat steak). Avoid pizza unless you know it's thin crust, and ask them to go easy on the cheese. A grilled fish or meat with veggies on the side is fine too, as long as there are no creamy sauces, etc. Order carbonated water if you like it - calorie free but far more exciting than tap water! Big yummy salads can be great - just get the dressing on the side. Avoid the bread they put on the table. Try asking for vegetarian options? Not foolproof by any stretch, but might give you some ideas. Brunch/breakfast go for the fruit salads. Desserts - try sorbets or gelatos, or fruit based plates. |

Try slicing prepared polenta, brush lightly with butter or oil, grill and garnish with fresh basil. Also works for sweet potatoes. You can also bbq slabs of tempeh or marinated tofu steaks (with the tofu, it's all about the marinade). |

Grapes confuse me too because I always weigh my grapes, and I log them by weight, but it seems that I only get half a cup for the weight CC+ reports a full cup should weigh. Initially, I counted by the grape (because I was eating them during work meetings where I couldn't weigh or measure), but learned in the end that my grapes were twice as big as a single CC+ grape was! I just go by weight at the end of the day. |

I would say a 180 cal breakfast is too little - remember you haven't eaten before breakfast for 8-10 or more hours!! Why not add some fruit to your cereal - loads of berries, peaches, banana, etc. - low cal but it's water content/bulk can fill you up. Also higher protein content will make you feel fuller. How about yogurt? Nothing wrong with snacking - keep some snack size pouches (grapes? granola? nuts? etc) in your bag for during/between classes. Maybe consider something without crinkly wrapping or loud crunching so you can snack surreptitiously. The way the pill works is that it 'tricks' your body into thinking it's pregnant so that you don't ovulate (and therefore get pregnant), so I wouldn't be surprised to be hungrier while on the pill. Lot's of women gain a few pounds while on the pill. |

| Motivation | Trouble with self control - any tips? | Apr 08 2008 17:52 (UTC) |
2 |
I've found since counting cals that I have amazing self-control - I think it is in my obsessive-compulsive nature, and that I am accountable to the number on the computer screen. I always build in a couple hundred cals per day for sweets/temptations and I have this after dinner. So if I encounter sweets in the daytime, I can avoid them because I tell myself I won't be able to have that treat after dinner. Seems to work. My hubbie also helps - I always whine when I reach my cal limit "Can I have another peice of chocolate" and he says "Do you have calories left?" and I say "no." so he says "no", and then I can't because he won't let me!!!! Obviously, keep stuff out of site if possible, and I also find if people around you know you 'don't eat candy', than it's really hard to eat candy in front of them - so that can help you control too!!! (although telling colleagues/friends you are dieting can have bad consequences too...) Good luck!!! |

| Foods | When should I eat fruit? | Apr 08 2008 14:30 (UTC) |
5 |
Fruit digests very quickly compared to other foods, and is very sugary and therefore 'ferments' in your stomach. This is fine normally, but if you eat fruit after eating a lot of other food that digest more slowly, then the fermenting fruit sits in your stomach a lot longer, and can cause bloating, gas and discomfort. My nutritionist friend told me this - and lives by it (and has a more sensitive stomach than I do). I tried to eat fruit at the beginning of meals or only on an empty stomach, but it didn't fit my lifetstyle, and I have none of the problems listed above. Therefore, I wouldn't call this one a rule, but something to try playing with if you have bloating, gas and discomfort that you have narrowed down to be ing related to your fruit intake. I've never really heard the other statements as being rules. |
