Weight Loss What "Weigh" is Best? Jun 03 2009
03:29 (UTC)

No "Weigh"!

:)

Yes, I do know how scales can fluctuate...I bought a digital body fat memory scale a year or so ago and it actually registers about 5 lbs heavier than my "normal" scale.  If my normal scale reads 161ish then the hi tech digital scale will read 166.4.  Crazy but I don't let it get to me and I always go by the digital scale weight.

But I don't "weigh"st time worrying over those kinds of fluctuations...I just worry when the same scale weighs differently everyday when the variables haven't changed.

Thanks for the insight though...I do plan to start taking physical measurements to help me determine if I'm losing weight.

The trend line is the only thing that keeps me going...I was just hoping to understand the science behind the fluctuations.  Why I weigh more after exercising or not eating after 6pm...why I weigh less if I take a day or two off from walking or any type of exercise, etc.  It just wears me out mentally sometimes to jump as much as 3-4 pounds in a day.

I have made it a personal law to never step on the scale except in the morning because I can't even begin to understand how 10 hours, a bowl of cereal, tuna sandwich, tons of water and a light dinner can add 5+ pounds to the morning weight.  Insanity and it's now illegal for me to go near the scale after 9am.

This week: 164 lbs.

Last week: 160.2 lbs.

Loss/Gain (week): Gained too many...

How do you gain 4 pounds in a week?  It's been steadily going up each day and as it continued to go up...my motivation and excitement came down.  Very down.  Sorry I haven't checked in...I'm just a little set back by the increase.  Feels like running in place.
I'm glad to see that most everyone else is doing really well.  I have to run out with the kids but will try to get my spirits up and get my head "back in the game" for next week's weigh in and this weeks mini challenge.

I'm really coming to hate the scale.  I weigh once every single morning and there haven't been two days that I've weighed the same this week.  One day I weighed 159 and then the next day it was 162.  Crazy.  But my trend keeps coming down except for yesterday, it went up very slightly.  Anyway, congrats to everyone else!

Alexanderob:  I can't believe how much you're losing every week!  Great job and I hope to beat you one week!

Denalou: I wouldn't worry too much about the big jump.  I've been jumping all over the scales since I started up again in mid July.  I'm trying really hard to look at the over all picture which is the 8lbs I've lost so far!  Be happy that the 3lb jump was down and not up!! :)

Oakmommy:  You must have different water than me!  :)

1.  There was a full moon

2.  Water weight after the shower

3.  The presidential elections

Just kidding....couldn't resist pulling some of the excuses from my previous post last week.  Seriously,

1. My favorite show is on, I'll do it afterwards.

2.  I'll eat less tomorrow

3.  It's too cold/hot to exercise.

Strategies:

1.  Turn off the tv!!

2.  Eat less today!!

3.  Buy warmer clothes or find an indoor exercise routine.

This week: 161.8 lbs.

Last week: 161.4 lbs.

Loss/Gain (week): -0.4 lbs

Very dissappointed.  Extremely dissappointed.  I looked over my stats and here is briefly what my week looked like.

I kept my calorie intake to an average of approximately 1375 calories per day.  The least amount of calories I burned was 1750 each day and the most being around 2100.  Walked 4-5 times this week each time walking at least 1 mile and sometimes 2 miles.  I even climbed back on that stupid eliptical machine on one of the days for a 20 minute workout.  So all in all, I managed to get some sort of exercise in 6 out of 7 days and I only lost .4 lbs.

I'm confused and a little discouraged.  Saturday was TOTM but with my lower calorie intake and exercise it shouldn't have had an effect.  Okay, enough boo-hooing from me!

Alexanderrob - Stunning weight loss!  4lbs wow!  I would also like to know how you did it.

Actually, congratulations to everyone that had a good loss this week!

I'm trying to gather my Monday morning weigh-in excuses together.  Have you ever seen the t-shirts at the amusement parks or the ones in the department stores that usually say something like this...10 reasons I couldn't get on the roller coaster or 10 reasons my family forgot my birthday?  Or David Letterman's top 10 list...this is sort of like that.

Top 10 Reasons I Gained Weight Over the Weekend (Feel free to steal one for Monday or add your own)

10.  The hole in the O-zone layer got bigger and that depressed me into eating.

9.  The olympics messed up my sleeping habits thereby causing the extra gain.

8.  My scale broke.

7.  Because Paula Dean uses too much butter in her recipes and I didn't realize butter caused weight gain.

6.  I forgot what day it was.

5.  It's stress weight caused by the presidential elections.

4.  I bought new shoes over the weekend and they're heavier.

3.  I took several showers and "absorbed" quite a bit of the water.

2.  There was a full moon this weekend.

.....And the number 1 reason I gained weight over the weekend...drum roll please...

1.  I read an article containing a new scientific study on the laws of gravity and how they're changing due to el nino which is causing the human body to become heavier when weighed.

Laughing  I promise...no excuses on Monday but I do like to sit around and think them up.  Good luck!!

Mine can differ as much as 7 pounds with clothes and sneakers on.  That's why I've sworn off afternoon weigh in's for this challenge.  Today was the last day.  I got on after lunch and I had gone from 161 (this morning) to 167.  It can really be a downer sometimes so I've vowed to quit.  It did motivate me to take the kids to the park and walk a mile.  I took the day off from work and it was a beautiful day so it was a great opportunity!

Sarah:  Yes, you may join the alliance!

Alexanderrob: My weight actually went up after the shower so I don't know...maybe I'm a sponge?  Maybe it was my hair weighing more...who knows.  I guess I should just be happy that it's still going down slightly.

Mintberry:  I've thought about trying to develop a routine at work but so far no luck.  I wouldn't want to try something that was just sporadic and rare and I haven't been able to develop a "regular" lunch time with this job.  Frequently, I find myself having "working" lunches and sometimes we have "meeting" lunches where we either have to meet people and clients for lunch or we're called to do a conference call and lunch is catered.  Eating at work in itself is a challenge because most people eat out daily and we don't really have a "break" room.  We have a small kitchen to prepare you lunch in but then your only option is to eat in your office which inevitably turns into a working lunch.  At home, I don't live in an area without sidewalks or any sort of decent access for walking....and I love to walk so that part is difficult.  Oh, BTW, have you thought about trying tea made with splenda.  I LOVE sweet tea and buy it buy the gallons so when I found they made tea with splenda already in it, I was thrilled.  I honestly couldn't tell a big difference between real sweet tea and tea made with splenda although now, if I try to drink a regular sweet tea...it tastes extremely sweet...too sweet to drink.

Hi Everyone!

I'm weighing in on our first unofficial Monday update.  I know we don't have to count this week but I'll throw it out there anyway.  This really isn't progress for me because my trend has started going up even though today's weight is lower.

Original Weight: 163

Today's Weight: 161.8

Leanne:  I don't really weigh myself 10 times a day but I do step on a couple of times in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon.  I usually try not to step on in the afternoon because I think it hurts my progress my affecting my perception of the weight I've lost.

Now I'm working on trying to only get on the scales once in the morning.  I have a digital scale and it NEVER reads the same weight which is frustrating.  Like this morning, I stepped on before getting in the shower and it read 161.8 but for some reason I decided to weigh again after the shower and it read 162.4 so I'm just a little obsessive.

My strategy for this challenge is to keep my calorie intake down to a 1300 calorie maximum and try to develop some sort of exercise routine.  I tend to work really long hours and have 4 kids so that part could be a little tough.  (I realize I sound like someone off of Survivor talking about strategies but it does sort of feel like we're competing to win something right?)  Can anyone say Alliance?  Laughing

Good luck everyone!

Are we only supposed to weigh once a week or can I still continue to weigh 10 times a day? Smile

I really hate my afternoon weight.

Hi there,

I'd like to join if possible.  I originally signed up with CC this past February and then "fell off the wagon" in late March so I've been back in since early July.

I'm 5'6 and 163 right now.  Started in July at 168.  Now my morning weight and my evening weight are 2-3 pounds different so I'm not sure which one to go by but I'd like to lose at least 20 pounds.

Interesting.  If you go back and read only hillbillyrock and jennus replies, it sounds suspiciously like a cheesy weight loss commercial that airs after midnight.

In fact, I don't think there's a thread where jennus doesn't specifically mention kioslim by name.  Odd.

Thanks for all the advice and info.  I'm pretty sure it's not a thyroid issue.  My dr. checked me physically as well as the blood test and I'm not having any other symptoms.  He's been my doctor for 10 or 15 years so I feel pretty comfortable with his diagnosis.

The only reason I pay attention to stress causing symptoms is because I know that stress can cause a multitude of problems.  I once broke out from head to toe with the worst skin rash.  I went to my doctor (same one) because I thought I had shingles or some horrible allergy.  He looked at me and asked me only one question: Have you been under stress lately?  All I could do was laugh.  He prescribed an ointment and gave me some other meds but the irritation didn't go away until a couple of months later when the issues that was causing me stress finally were resolved.  So I can believe that high stress can cause weight gain.  I'd rather take a natural remedy to help lower the stress level than a narcotic.  I've also started taking prenatal vitamins.  When I used to take those, it was the best I ever felt.  Those things are absolutely wonderful for women.

The best thing I've come across since I started taking action to lose weight is this website.  It really makes keeping up with your eating habits and keeping it in check easy!

Thanks...appreciate all the advice everyone.  Just getting a little discouraged is all.

I'm coming off the soup diet although I think I may stick to the diet pills because they're not really "diet" pills.  They don't suppress appetite or anything like that.  They're simply designed to help lower your cortisol and I've been reading a lot about cortisol, stress levels and belly fat.  It seems to be more natural and very similair if not identical to the phosphatidylserine I started taking a couple of weeks ago from an organic store.  I really don't want to lose any weight on my legs, arms, chest, butt...well you get the idea.  All of my weight seems to go to one place and one place only.  It's very frustrating.  I usually do 30 minutes on the eliptical, try to do a couple nights a week doing 30 minutes or so of regular ab exercises using the ball and a little light weight lifting for tone (and to hopefully prevent the weight from leaving the areas I don't want it to.)

Anyway, I'm back on the healthy horse and plan to put protein and "regular" food back into my diet since this isn't working.  Any reccomendations on exercises that I may not be doing that would help with the "spare tire"?

I guess I'm a bad Catholic too because I thought I'd been fasting for the last week (amount of time on the diet).

I also thought that abstaining from meat on Friday's was a form of fasting.  Eating fish isn't something I enjoy doing so I do consider it fasting!  :)

Don't feel guilty, just do the best you can!
