| Vegetarian | If Anyone Has Problems With MSG... | Jan 30 2009 22:44 (UTC) |

Soy does seem to cause some issues but more on the digestive end of the spectrum as opposed to muscular (though I've never really been a soy person so it's not much of an issue). Tomatoes - in moderation- are okay, frankly one of my absolute favorite foods! So I was pretty disappointed to find out they naturally contain Glutamic acid. BUT once cooked for sauce, it doesn't seem to be an issue at all. MSG starts to break down at 250 degrees but there doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer to how long it would need to cook for it to completely break down. Yes it's a bummer to have to be so careful (grocery shopping - read the label EVERY time you buy because formulas can change without warning - even brands you've been buying for years) but frankly after what I experienced when I went through the elimination and reintroduction to see if I reacted.....it is well worth it. It was eye opening. This has been an almost two year battle to find what the problem is. And only in the last month I found the answer by practically falling over a book on food allergies written by an allergist - in my own state no less! It's been a blessing to finally have some answers. I'd rather restrict my diet than go back to my husband needing to cut my meat for me any day. |

I just found out I'm allergic to it. My doc actually sent me to a rheumatologist to see if I had Rheumatiod arthritis. It can also cause muscle pain, irritability, fatigue, stomach issues - all kinds of things. I can't eat anything with it (or anything with any form of it - including alcohol (anything fermented), aged cheese, autolized yeast, boulion, hydrolyzed veg/plat protein, Yeast extract, calcium/potassium glutamate, sodium/calcium caseinate, "natural" flavoring...... I end up with major muscle pain among other things. Since I have excluded it from my diet - it has been an amazing change. If you are a label reader....you will find this in almost everything. I don't care how "good" it makes things taste - it's awful stuff. |

| Foods | I hate fish! | Jan 05 2009 19:15 (UTC) |

Tillapia will be your fish hero. It doesn't taste fishy at all and actually doesn't have much of a taste of its own. Use herbs, wine, spices, maybe even chicken broth and you could totally change the flavor but still get all the benifits. I don't like fish much either. I don't like seafood much at all but I have found a few that I like and stick to; Tilapia, Orange Roughy and Salmon. Those are the best to me. Also easy to cook. Make a bag out of tin foil, put the fish in with, wine, herbs, maybe some onion or minced garlic and then 20 minutes later when its done I spray a little "can't believe it's not butter" spray on it and it's lovely. Then I just throw the tin foil away and the mess is done! Easy clean up!
Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Anyone done the elimination diet? | Jan 05 2009 18:59 (UTC) |

Hello Mamma, The elimination diet is designed to not help you lose weight or fat - as others have mentioned - but specifically to figure out food allergies. If you are having some health issues that you are trying to figure out then go for it for that reason alone - IF you should lose some weight or fat along the way, terrific! But I wouldn't put your focus on the diet solely for that reason. There are many different ways of doing it and you could eliminate just certain categories to see if that is the culpret. I'm playing around with this myself as I've been having some pain issues for a few months. An herbalist friend of mine has been helping to guide me in toward a few things that may be the issue. From what she has told me the FULL elimination diet is not fun at all and very hard to stick to. So think it through carefully, keep a food journal and track your symptoms so you can try to make some connections - keep in mind that some food allergies have delayed reactions by hours or the next day. Focus on your health and not so much on the waistline. Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | alli? | Aug 23 2007 16:14 (UTC) |

| Hey there,
I started Alli monday. I did some research - other than just the site - but it was really helpful to read the posts of people who were on it and what their experiences are. The magority said that as long as you count your calories and most importantly count your fat grams (per meal) you don't really have to deal with any side effects or "treatment effects" as they call them. The most difficult part is making sure that you stay within your allowed fat gram intake but not going too far under so the Alli has nothing to work with. I had a physical and discussed with my doctor whether or not I should take this step. After a year of changing my lifestyle to include good healthy foods and daily exercise I haven't made much progress. She did recommend that I try it for at least a month to see how I feel and also said that one of the endochronologist has recomended it to patients with a large ammount to lose and they have had success. She told me that I was an ideal candidate for it because I already had healthy habits built in to my life and I was already counting calories. I took a little over one week to begin the pattern of counting fat grams and paying attention to that. After 4 days I have seen the numbers slowly drop off - not by leaps and bounds but enough that I am happy and motivated. I do not feel sick or anything at all. I have kept my fat grams between the allowed ammount and have seen no side effects. You do need to have restraint and discipline. But I'll say that the risk of "treatment effects" is a great motivator to stay on track! :) Hope this helps! |

| Weight Loss | Question: meal calories | Aug 08 2007 21:04 (UTC) |

| Thanks a ton! I really needed a ball park figure. I don't want to make any meal to big or too small but as I am just getting back into the routine I was trying to remember roughly what a healthy size meal looks like as far as calories are concerned. I have the portions down I just needed that one extra piece to work with.
Congrats on the 39 pounds! Thats awesome! I hope I can say that one day soon! THanks again! |

| I just finished "Sam's Letters to Jennifer" By James Patterson
Has to be one of the most romantic stories I have ever read. I couldn't put it down and read it all in one night. So I am a bit tired to day. :) I recommend it! Also just finished "When the wind blows" and "the lake house" By James Patterson also. Both very good. |

| Hey guys,
I had posted about thenm in the weightloss area earlier in the week. If you e-mail Alex and Max they respond! I had sent them an e-mail on suday afternoon telling them that I thought they had a great product and he responded the next morning. Alex is a very nice guy. If you go to their website you can look up what stores carry their products. Wal Mart has them too. He is trying to get them into more stores like cub foods but he said that prople see the "sugar free label" and don't even want to look at them. He'd be glad to hear all the buzz they have created! |

| Heres what I do. First I end up crabby that I have to eat at a restaurant not knowing what I am consuming and knowing that an item marked "healthy" may not actually be. Then I force myself to get over it and I try to make sure I know where we are going before we go. I give myself as much time as possible - plan the date. Then I go to the site for that restaurant and find the nutritional information and the menu. I write down what the calorie counts for different menu items are and pre calculate what a meal could "cost me" and I bring that little list with me so I can re check if I decide to change my mind. Plus, that way I'm not the one sitting there taking forever to choose a meal and then regretting it later. Besides I don't want to make others feel bad at the dinner - especially if it was their idea - and my diet shouldn't be the center of attention.
Thats what I do and it takes so much stress out of eating out. Hope that helps someone! |

| Isn't PMS always the worst culprit?? It really screws with you. I know it does me. I get crazy cravings and SO tired all I want to do is curl up with a blanket, watch tv and not think for a week.
He thinks I'm wierd. I practically turn into a pregnant woman when I'm pms-ing. Like the other night I just wanted something good to eat Ketchup with. LOL Sometimes its not about the food but about the condiments. Like ketchup or BBQ sauce or spaghetti or pizza sauce.....MMmmmm. Gee ya think I like tomato based products? But I have to say I loved the strawberries and choc. It felt like a total sin but didn't put me over my calories, filled me up and when I weighed in this morning I was down 1.4! Some how that makes it even better. :O) |

| I read somewhere a long time ago that you should drink the normal 8 8oz glasses and for every 5 lbs you want to lose add another 8 oz.
I'm not drinking near enough water each day but it was something that stuck in my head. This thread is enough to make a person wana pee with all the water talk and pee talk I can practically hear the dripping of water! LOL |

| Weight Loss | Do you log EVERY item you eat? | Feb 28 2006 15:03 (UTC) |
4 |
| I log everything I eat but I don't use the computer to log it. I keep a special small note book on my kitchen counter with a pen and a calculator. And my book that has the nutritional info for millions of foods. I actually find it easier to use than the one on here. Plus with it right by the fridge there is no excuse to forget to log something.
I don't log water but I should start because I don't drink enough. And I don't log the balsamic vinegar that I put on my salad but I do count the olive oil. And I use "I can't believe its not butter" spray, no calories and it tases great. Its not the real thing but its close. I don't actually write down the words. If you looked at my log the first few pages would have an entire page dedicated to one day. Now I can get at least a week to one page. It looks like mostly numbers with a bunch of plus and equals signs. But I know what it all means and I don't feel like I will need to run out to get another note book next week. lol There's what I do. |

| Weight Loss | Ahhhh - the Girl Scouts have arrived!! | Feb 27 2006 22:33 (UTC) |

| UGH! Boy do I hear you! My step daughter is a girl scout. We would be rotten parents if we didn't buy some, right?? My husband decided that we would donate 3 boxes, buy some to freeze and some that the kids want. So I also ordered one box of the Lemon Coolers to see how they were. I love 'em! Its almost like an animal cookie but better.
But oh! My favorite are those tagalongs.....chocolate covered peanut butter........oh man. They keep calling my name and I just have to pretend I'm deaf! Girl scout season is tough but we will get through it!!!!!! I am less than half a pound from 190 and hubby just broke the 300 mark. I am so proud of him! (he's 6'6 so he wears it pretty well but hasn't seen a number under 300 in several years.) He loves the thin mints and he didn't order any of them. Way more will power than I do. And now easter is right around the corner! Oh those cadbury eggs............(drool). Now those I'd tackle someone for! |

| Foods | Need more fiber and more protein | Feb 22 2006 15:19 (UTC) |
1 |
| Listen to Jenna on the fiber supplement. As someone who has bouts of irritable bowel syndrome I can tell you that the supplements are purely for poop power. Fiber is turned into our natural "lubrication" so we can go with out grunting. LOL The fiber supplements just mimic that process. If you actually look at the bottles (if you look at the pill form - the ones you drink are just gross) there is usually only 2-3 grams of fiber in there which isn't much. There are so many fruits and veggies that can do great things for your "guts", stick with them. You'll get all the fiber you need plus all the added benifits and extra nutrition. Just pay attention to which ones are higher in fiber. One thing I've noticed is that the more whole grain you go the more calories are involved.
Just my two cents! |

| Fitness | Breasts?? | Feb 09 2006 11:14 (UTC) |

| Heres what I find funny. Many women, when we are in a trimmer stage of life, think or say "oh if only they were bigger!" Now when they are (along with the rest of our bodies) I look at women with smaller ones and think "gee, what was I complaining about? I could have worn a tank top without a bra!" Now I enjoy making my "smaller" friends think twice when they start complaining about having small boobs or they are fat. First I tell them "don't complain about being fat until you have to lift your gut to see your nether regions" and second "do your nipples point at your toes? No? then I don't want to hear it." Its always hindsight that makes us realise how stupid we sounded years ago when we complained about "tumies" when we didn't really know what a "tummy" was or dreaming about having bigger boobs when they were just fine.
I'm not a plasic surgery kind of gal, I'm hopin that things will "recoil"a bit but not expecting miracles. I am however looking forward to the day that I get to look for a bra that doesn't need a D anywhere on the hanger. They make the cutest bras for little boobs. I don't care if I have to fold em up to fit 'em in there, at least it will be better than where I am now. Providing my boobs aren't the only place I lose weight that is! LOL Its good to have goals, right? :O) |

| Weight Loss | Worried about possible stunted growth | Feb 06 2006 16:06 (UTC) |

| Hi,
I'm 5 foot 3, have been since I was in 6th grade. You may have another growth spurt coming never know, everyone is different. But 125 isn't bad. I understand what you are saying about everything showing because you are short. It does on me! I was feaked out about my weight at your age too, just about every girl in highschool is, its a rare exception that isn't. Freetobeme is right. Concentrate on eating healthy and do some excercise. Build some great habbits for life. Now is the time! It will serve you well once you go to college and after. Build habbits now and learning about good health so later you don't have to worry about having weight to lose. It might help you not gain any bad eating habbits in college too. As you get older you will be grateful you started adulthood healthy. Consider it the best gift you can give your future self. And keep in mind, its just highschool. It will be over in a couple of years and life is totally different in the real world. Here is where you just need to learn both in and out of the classroom. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. 125 is a hot number, think of it this way.......if you were 140 you'd be wishing you were 125. So be glad you are already there! Learn and build good habbits! Good luck! You'll be fine! |

| Weight Loss | Trying to gain weight | Feb 06 2006 15:40 (UTC) |
|
| First off, I'm a bit confused because you had a post that was first asking if you needed to diet after having lost 20 lbs. Now you want to gain it?
Honey you are young, don't let peoples comments force you into an opinion of yourself. What you should be doing is concentrating on learning how to have a healthy life style. You are 21, your body and metabolism will start to change in the next few years along with your activity level most likely. Excercise and a balanced diet is what you need and your body will figure out on its own what size you should be. Take care of your body. Everything in moderation; alcohol, sweets and junk. Don't start building a habbit of eating what you are eating because once you do put some weight on that way it will be all fat and you could just keep putting on more if you get used to eating unhealthy. Balanced diet. Make sure you are getting some protien into your diet some how if you don't eat meat. There are lots of meat substitutes out there in the grocery store. Veggies, fruit, whole grains, Low fat dairy and figure a way to get your protien in and then start excercising. Take up jogging, weight training or something. Just concentrate on being healthy and you'll be fine. Good luck! |

| Wow! Thanks guys!
I know my snacking isn't a hunger thing. More habbit triggered. My worst habbit is that sometimes I eat nothing until around noon or 1pm and I know I shouldn't. I think it screws wtih my system, okay I know it does. SO since my serious snack goof I have tried to make sure that I get downstairs to wiegh myself right away in the morning and then go eat something weather I want it or not. It has helped. As for my son's party; it was a Pizza party. So yes I did have a total of 4 pieces of pizza but I avoided the chips and had a half of a diet pop. Later when then kids had gone to bed and the friends were still here playing cards I had two bottles of water and 4 Clementine oranges to avoid the munchies. I think I did pretty good. Plus I practically force fed them the chips that were left that would tempt me. LOL Thanks for all the tips and sharing! |

| Thank you all for your support and ideas!
I don't normally keep so many chip in the house but they were for my son's birthday party that is today. I thought I'd be smart and buy ahead of time....not so much as I had to go buy new chips! Oh well. Back on the wagon. I was good last night. No munching. I was too tired to get out of bed, so that helped! LOL I also think part of the problem is that I don't eat in the morning. Someone mentioned that. I'm not a breakfast person never was. So its hard to make myself eat somthing in the morning when I don't wake up hungry (even if I am good the night before). Thanks again!! I have to go get ready for this party! |

| Weight Loss | Tremors | Feb 03 2006 16:57 (UTC) |
2 |
| I'd say to consult your doctor. THey know more of the biology of your tremmors condition. We don't. But they are doctors and will have some nutritional info also. Maybe they could hook you up with a nutritionist that could help you figure out some of that. With out knowing the specific nature or having a full understanding of your condition it may not even be a good idea to ask here. Without being a doctor some one might in advertently give a suggestion that could make it worse or work against your meds. Thats something else to think about too. There may be things that counter act your medication. You could try asking your pharmacist also. They have a wealth of knowledge!
Good luck finding your answer!! |

| Weight Loss | sodium | Feb 02 2006 06:06 (UTC) |
4 |
| I'm glad this subject came up. Its made me realise that I need to make an effort in the sodium department.
I am a self confessed Salt-a-holic. I love the stuff. I put it on everything and not just a shake or two. I have had people sit across a table from me and their jaws drop or they ask me if I'd like some food with my salt. I'm awful with the stuff. Fruit, veggies, salad, I even salt salty stuff with out even tasting it first. Like ham and spaghettio's. After reading some of the posts on the subject I am beginning to notice things. I have had my hands swell, had the dents from my socks in my ancles and my clothing get really tight really fast. I always thought it was carbiniation because I can't burp ( its wierd I know, but for some reason I just can't). Now I am going to start paying more attention to whether I am reacting to salt and what the sodium levels are in food. I've always known it was a bad habbit but I've always had low (normal) blood pressure and figured I was young I could cut it back later. I think I should start now. I'm glad you all shared. Thanks! |

| After reading the very last post about losing 15 # and people noticing your hair...funny by the way.
I recently went on an 8 day trip to Mexico with a group of 45 people for a wedding. Hubby and I just pass security and are called into the restaurant where the grooms mother is sitting with a woman I haven't met. She looks at me and says.."so are you the other pregnant one??" I just about fell over. I said no, and then the grooms mom jumped in and said that it wasn't me but you couldn't tell on the other girl either. She's an angel. All I could think (between bitter laughter) was Holy Crap, I just lost 14 lbs and someone thought I was pregnant! A little later I found out it was the brides mom. I thought it was a funny moment, in a bitter kind of way, but I think hubby was afraid I would lose it a bit. I just had to share. I guess its time to step things up a bit! LOL |

| Weight Loss | Hi, all! Quick & healthy meal tips? | Jan 31 2006 16:04 (UTC) |
1 |
| I have kids too and don't like to have pop in the house too much anymore. We have always had a no caffine rule when it comes to the kids. Fortunately my youngest doesn't even like it. But one pop I did find was Diet Rite. No Calories, cafine or Sugar - its sweetened with splenda instead so theres no nasty after taste. The only regular flavor is cola but my oldest who is 10 likes the fruity ones - strawberry kiwi, tangerine, black cherry, white grape and I think there maybe one or two others. She really likes them and has not complained once about diet pop. Its a treat to have not an everyday thing. Maybe on the weekends or if company is over. Theres also Diet Snapple. Like juice but with minimum calories and no diet flavor.
Hope that helps a little! |

| Weight Loss | Getting to absolute minimum calories intake | Jan 19 2006 16:37 (UTC) |

| What you are doing is dangerous and will sabotage your weightloss in the end. Your body will start holding onto every calorie it can instead of using your own body fat for the energy it needs.
I along with many people here will tell you, don't do this. You need to keep your body going with healthy foods and excersise or your metabolism will shut down and you won't burn anything. Not to mention you will feel like crap. Don't do it. Consume your calorie requirement once you lose some weight recalculate to see if your required calories have changed. Do this the smart way and the healthy way to build good habbits so that once the weight is gone you won't put it back on. Good luck. |

| 100lbs is amazing! Great job!
I am 29 (30 in few months) only 5'3" and my goal is to lose at least 60lbs. My highest weight was 205. That was a wake up call because even when I was pregnant I didn't weigh that much. Being short its like every pound is on display. And I carry all my weight in the middle so I have these funny chicken legs and a big round middle with no waist to speak of. But that will slowly change. My present jeans are beginning to feel loose and I am down almost 12 lbs. Today has not been a good day - those chocolates were just calling my name! But I am pleased that I didn't indulge to the point I would have in the past. It was still too much but its only one day. I'll do better for the rest of this one and back on track tomorrow. Thanks for being an inspiration and share some of your most sucessful tips with us! Keep goin girl! |
