| Thanks so much for the help. I know I need to eat more, it just takes some getting used to but I really appreciate the vote of confidence. I'm actually going to a nutritionist to discuss my diet and such. Thanks again! | |||

| I have really enjoyed reading this post! I too am recovering from years of calorie restriction and in the past month have upped my calories to around 13-1400 a day. My metabolism is still recovering and although I know I need to eat more because I am very active, it's still hard, knowing that I will gain weight at first. reading this post has helped me realize that although I might gain in the beginning, it will eventually speed up my metabolism and then I can feel normal once again and give my body all the nutrients it desires. I am 5'7 and around 135. I am not looking to lose just to maintain and repair my damaged metabolism. If you have any advice you can offer as well, I'm always happy to hear it. Thanks again for all your input it has helped me a lot :) | |||

I am a distance runner and this syndrome is quite common with runners, so I have definitely struggled through it. In addition to stretching and icing the area I suggest getting an IT band. It is a small band that you place around your knee meant to keep everything in place and some are made with a pad designed to put pressure on the side of the knee where the most pain is. I don't know that you need to see a physical therapist however, I know I didn't and given some time and stretching you should be just fine. You can find the band at any running store. Good luck! |

| Elmerm I thought your post was so interesting, not only because I have a very similar experience but also because you are at the point where you are ready to do something. I have struggled with anorexia since I lost weight in high school. I initially lost it in a healthy way but my controlling personality took hold of it and soon enough I was down to about 500 calories a day and about 98 lbs. I eventually got help and gained weight, I became much more active and healthy looking but calorie restriction has plagued me ever since. I am definitely at the point that no matter the exercise I do (I am training for a marathon) no little amount of calories will help me to lose weight or really see the toning benefit of my workouts. JUst this week I decided that I really wanted to make a change. I'm not sure what clicked but I'm sure you had the same experience. I am not concerned with the weight factor either but the fear of getting fat is definitely still there. I am not sure if I have gained weight by eating more, but I know that I am ejoying each day a little more. It is still a constant battle not to resort to that skinny high you get off of not eating, but I know that in the end, eating more will have the big payoff. Are you still active? I would think your stomach bloats simply because it is not accustomed to the caloric/sodium intake and in a few weeks the initial bloating after eating will reduce some. A lot of it is probably psychological as well. At least for me, after I eat I automatically feel heavier and more bloated, being full is a scary thing. I really think you can do this. I know for myself, I am a little optimistic for only being a week into it, but for once I feel a little bit normal and that has overcome the fat feeling I might be experiencing. It will be hard at first I garauntee but eating healthy foods, more calories and exercising there is no way you are going to become "fat" again. Definitely keep me posted on how it's going. Good luck! Remember it may get worse for a bit but I think in the end it will be a lifetime of better | |||
| Weight Loss | if i'm never hungry but only eating 1000cals or less will my body still go in starv. mode? | Feb 08 2008 16:00 (UTC) |

| I have lived the past 6 or so years restricting my calories but still being very active. I was probably restricting to around 6 or 700 a day but with very high activity levels. I finally decided to start eating more calories and more meals a day. Although I just started a few days ago, I found when I started eating more I was so much more hungry. When I restricted I wasn't hungry ever but now that I am up to about 1300 a day (starting small) I have a healthy appetite and I think it is my body's way of showing me that it is using the calories up. I definitely plan on increasing to a higher calorie level as I go, but I have to start small due to all the psychological things that accompany eating more. I really encourage you to try, you might find you feel better about yourself, have more energy and really enjoy food. Has anyone had a smilar experience? Did you find you gained a lot of weight at first or no? Always looking for people who have already accomplished what I am trying to do. Good luck! | |||

| Hello All! I am new to this as well and have definitley enjoyed reading all your posts. I am 23 an have run the gammit of weight since high school going from 180 down to about 98lbs. I have delt with an eating disorder about 3 years ago, but although I am now a healthier 135lbs, my eating is still all wrong and my calorie restriction is too much. I am extremely active and I am sick of restricting my calories so much and ready to start eating more calories to gain lean muscle and benefit more from my workouts. Obviously there is a big fear for me that I have destroyed my metabolism and eating more will just cause me to gain weight uncontrollably. I was hoping someone could offer some advice on this subject, someone with a similar situation. I am not looking to lose weight, just speed up my metabolism so my eating doesn't control my life. I know I will gain weight in the beginning, but I just want to know it's possible to make a change. | |||
