Weight Loss When do you stop feeling like you look/are overweight? Jul 06 2009
12:08 (UTC)

Thanks guys. As I expected, the holiday weight normalised and I'm back to where I was stuck a couple of weeks before I left (~157), so I've 17lb to drop. However, I also have the motivation to drop them and after reading your stories I think I'll keep plugging away til I get there.

pgeorgian - I'm pinning my hopes on your story, if I don't feel good at 145 then I'm blaming you! :p

Oh, I remember that feeling so well, it's like it was yesterday. Sit me in front of an open box of Honey Nut Cheerios with a carton of cold milk and I could mill through the whole thing without even feeling full! I eventually started putting the box away after pouring out a single (weighed) bowl and no matter how much I wanted more, I would make myself resist. That plus switching to Sultana Bran Flakes certainly has helped me get my breakfast portioning back under control, but there are days when the best thing ever would be to munch through that box of sugary sweet goodness til I hit the dust at the bottom.

I wonder if there's a Cereaholics Anonymous meeting around..

what about when it is a father and daughter out and one of them has to use the restroom?

my husband has taken my 4 year old to the store before and when she had to go he let her go in alone and stood outside the door waiting and listening for her...there was no one else in there though. if she had not come out in a very short period of time or if he thought something was up he would have went even if it's a womens restroom.

but what if he had to go? what should he do with her? you can't really have a 4 yr old girl in the mens restroom...

this hasn't came up yet but with have 2 little girls it probably will sometime.

If you've ever seen Three Men and a Little Lady, they had this issue themselves. Simple solution? Cover the little girl's eyes walking in and out! Make it a game :)

I've always found that my position on the belt depends entirely on where I'm looking, so if I turn my head to talk to someone on the machine next to me, I could fall over! At one point I was fiddling with my ipod on my shoulder strap, stood on the edge of the machine (as opposed to the moving belt) and nearly skidded onto my ass, which sent my heart rate rocketing! However I find that looking straight ahead/looking at my feet helps. Are you a natural weaver when walking? I walk diagonally when out on the street, my friends hate me for it.

Ye are all wise beyond your years, the weight disappeared after a week! I am now only 1.6lb off having lost 30lb, if that's not a good motivator for sticking to sensible eating while I'm away then I dunno what is.

love2hate, congrats on the no-gain! It's so easy to forget how much we enjoy working out when we stop for a while, but it's always there when we go back :)

I went on holidays for 3 weeks and came back with an increase of only just under 2lb, with 4 days in disneyland I thought that was a pretty good deal! Of course, the main problem is that now I am finding it impossible to get back into the swing of things, especially since I know I'll be away again in less than a week for another 10 days. I really don't want to slip back down the slope :(

Funnily enough, the increase in weight brought me straight back to where I was plateauing initially, I guess my body REALLY does like that number

Wow, go you, hh! I'm well impressed :) I slid a bit upwards yesterday, but back to 169.x today (I weigh daily, but measure my fat percentage on Sundays so that's my real "official" day)

Going on holidays on Tuesday, I really don't know how I'll get along without cc to guide me!

Isn't it great how simply going shopping can disguise many hours of exercise as fun? I was wandering around for a good 3 hours, and carrying stuff for part of that! Even though I didn't log it, because I'm pretty positive I went and ate it back with my mini chocolate binge when I got home, it was nice to be active, I haven't been out in a while.

I'm back up at 169, but I'm squarely focused on the fact that 169 means that I have lost *pauses for drum roll* 2 stone since November of last year! No one can take that away, I have had 4 days of 169 or less, and this is a good. thing.

It sounds like everyone's kicking ass lately, think we can all keep this going?

Speaking of all that water, I must get some myself, getting a tad dehydrated

Wuhoo, congrats guys! I'm also paring away the pounds, The scale has suddenly started liking me, I saw 167 this morning! Anyone else now nervous to get their hopes up, in case it all goes away and you're left feeling worse than before?

I measure my water in pint glasses, which I think are 16 ounces (I'm a metric gal).  Lately I've been going through about 6 pints at minimum, and this happens to correspond with the weight shift downwards. So, I've no idea if it's linked or not,  but I think I'll be keeping it up if possible! I know if I drink too little water, my body tries to keep as much as possible, which upsets my scale number, but too much seems to keep itself flushed on out!

Anyone else seeing cracks in their plateau? If so, got any tips or thoughts on what might have worked?

Thanks, MsMeg :D I was bold and ate a creme egg, but it only put me 19 cals over my goal calories, so I don't feel TOO bad (though if the 160s go away again, I'll curse it :)) AND I resisted a piece of wedding cake my mum brought home this evening!

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, I saw 169 on the scale for the first time this morning! It'll probably be gone in the morning, but I don't care (I do really, but I'm convincing myself I don't) as I finally saw it. I thought it was a myth!

Hookem87, you're 5'8" and 130?! Wow, that's amazing! I'm a little over that height and my goal weight isn't even that low, I never thought I'd be ABLE to get to it. Congratulations on making it to there at all! What's your goal? You must be very close to it, no wonder you're plateauing, apparently (I've never made it to there and have no first have experience) it gets really hard to take the last pound or two off. The body just doesn't want to let go!

Whoever managed to see 169, I envy you, I can't wait to get out of the 170s! Mind you, I've managed to get back to seeing 171s instead of 174s, so that's keeping me smiling :) Must keep drinking though, I've been slipping back into the whole only 1 or 2 litres of water habit and that's not enough.

Only 2 and a bit weeks til I go away, I hope the plateau is a thing of the past by the time I go!

That brownie thing sounds amazing, I'm salivating here!

My weigh in finally dropped down to 172.4, a pleasant surprise seeing as how I was getting lodged up near 175 more often than not. 10 km walk to do now, maybe that'll help some more :)

Well, my mongolian bbq outing would have been great, except I had dessert :( All the sauces are marinades and they all get very burnt off during the stir frying, but I think with all the oil they squirt to make sure it doesn't stick to the flat grill, the calories are more than made up for :(

There's a separate section for spices, herbs, salt etc, but I ended up avoiding it after a nasty surprise with the chinese five spice (a sliver on the teaspoon ended up making the dinner almost too hot to handle for me!. Then there's the marinades which you ladle over your bowl, then you hand that over and they cook it up. We don't have any creamy ones, so I guess I was ok with my choices, other than that damned (amazingly tasty) dessert.

Today's temptation: chinese with a friend before a birthday party. Half a portion of chicken fried rice is quite possibly the only thing I'll eat that won't nuke my calorie allocation, that I know of. Suggestions?

msmeg, your dinner sounds amazing, AND you have calories over?! Wow. Good luck with the cardio! I sabotaged myself last night by messing up my toe, so my treadmill cardio is out for today, and I can't lift weights (I have terrible forearms). What IS your hard core cardio? Other than insanely burnsome

Your department sounds like so much more fun than mine! Then again, I'm a real party pooper, nearly 3 years as a grad student (how depressing) and I haven't been to one social function with the others, not even lunch!

Someone please get me to do SOMETHING with regard to this reputation stuff, otherwise my head will explode (because my supervisor will glare so hard at it)

I live in Ireland (and am Irish), was just wondering if you actually went to the one I'm going to tonight. If so, you'd know what's the best sauce to take! I think I usually take the sweet and sour, or something with honey, can't think what it is. Any suggestions on what to avoid?

For possibly the first time ever, grilled veg (without meat) is sounding pretty damned tasty for dinner!

I did fantastically well yesterday, til about 8pm. I did great exercise (I managed to jog for 20 mins for the first time ever! Longest I'd lasted before then was about 6 mins!) and had spread my calories out really well.

Then came temptation. I had dinner out, which was fine, I had loads of calories left for it so I knew I'd be ok. Only problem was that I craved dessert, and gave into the cravings. A slice of apple and blackberry pie AND 2/3s of a vanilla malt. I knew I was sabotaging myself even as I ate, hence not finishing the malt (that and being aware that I was full, which is definitely progress), and I am so annoyed at the fact that I always do this.

I know that what I ate is more than likely still going to give me a deficit of ~200, but if I am serious about breaking the plateau, 200 ain't gonna help. What's worse is, I've got nights out planned for the next 4 days! But so help me God, I am not going to keep this weight, and I am not going to increase it. Positive mental attitude's half the battle, right? :)

Lovetohate, are you Irish? We have Mongolian BBQ here and I didn't think it was a chain. My meal out tonight is in there, and I'm wondering what's the best sauce to go with on the stir fry. Thank goodness for the great selection of veg, it's so easy to fill up on that stuff!

immom, not to quote every other post on all the other boards here, but are you eating enough to support all that energy expended? I know what it's like chasing kids around (I help my mother with two toddlers that she minds, whenever I'm working from home) and even that brief period shows exactly how much work it is! I sure hope your profile is set to very active!

No holiday over here (I'm from Ireland), so I just worked on my progress reports and finally finished them. Hopefully my supervisor will have read them before I meet him this afternoon, so I can send them in and MOVE ON!

jpm_jess, wow 80%? That's about double my productivity on a regular day. I'm a rubbish grad student, my concentration levels are zilch

Holy moly, that's quite the workout! You've only 15 to go? I'm not surprised, with a regime like that. I don't really have a regular workout, I just go to the gym whenever I'm in college (I'm a grad student) and walk/jog for at least 20 mins and at most 66 (the number's a coincidence, honest :))

I've never tried the whole work out dvd thing, I think I would never ever use them, or the motivation that I had for doing them would disappear as soon as I got them through the door.

No matter what though, I am bloody well going to kick this weight's ASS! I'll keep poking you to make sure you do too :)

I'm plateauing but I don't think it's a real one, more like I'm maintaining because the allure of all food everywhere is too much to overcome, and so I eat at or above maintenance (I manage to be good for breakfast and lunch, but come 4 pm or so, BAM, that's it)

I'd say breaking this pattern would require me being tied down and kept far from the sweet tin :)

Welcome!

The people on this forum (and all the others) are lovely, with tonnes of helpful advice, so don't be scared to ask things, even if you think they're stupid or weird. I'm betting they've seen it all!

As for your goal, it's really impressive and you sound like you have the commitment to stick to it and make it all the way there, so good luck and keep us posted :)

5' 8 (and a bit), and 24 years old

My highest was 197lb, in November last year, and after seeing that number on the scale (i.e. when I cracked 14 stone), I decided to try and change it.

Lowest was ~148lb in 2003 at age 19, after a very unhealthy lifestyle change and what could have gone too far and landed me with an ED.

Currently I'm swinging wildly between 171 and 174, the lightest I've been in at least 3 years, with a goal weight of 150lb. About 23lb to go, but I'm plateauing now due to losing motivation after hitting the half way point :(
