I keep trying in the crock pot and the steel cut oats just stick to the side and make a big burned on mess. :( I will try the almond breeze milk in them when I do it on the stove next. Sounds so yummy! |

| A great alternative to Splenda is Stevia. I get it in small packages in my grocery store and also in loose for baking. Its great! I bring a stash to work with my herbal teas/green teas and also keep a bottle of pills (looks like saccharin if any of you remember that - but its actually good for you!) in my purse. Stevia is made from a plant and has no calories. Its sweet and relatively easy to find. If not the health food section of your grocery store, then definitely health food stores have it. | |||

I have the Skinny Bitch cookbook and it is fantastic! Same funny comments and some really good recipes. I cook out of it at least once a week. I also have a slew of other vegan cookbooks as well as internet sites I haunt for recipes. I'm so glad this thread took off and we have a Skinny Bitch Club going on! I'm really proud of the people who have gone vegan recently and shared their stories. Its a wonderful thing and definitely making a big difference for you and for the animals. One at a time, our team grows! I've been vegetarian for 17 years and did it for both health and moral issues. I still ate chemicals and crap. Now that I gave up coffee, artificial sweeteners, etc. I feel amazing. Better than I have in ages. I sleep better, I feel better, I have more energy and a better mood. This could not have happened by coincidence. CC is helping me with portion control and calorie burning activity. I've lost 5 lbs since Feb 6th! YEAH! I'm also doing hot yoga. Its fantastic and definitely a VICE for me. Who needs a latte when I've got hot yoga! Its another philosophy of treating your body as a temple kind of thing. Amazing! Hot yoga burns about 800 calories in an hour! WOOHOO! |

| I love that you are getting the red Kitchen Aid Mixer! I have all pink Kitchen Aid appliances and utensils. I'm only just getting to use them though. I love making things from scratch and using all my stuff. It was basically just on show before! HA! | |||

| I just recently tried steel cut oatmeal and it is awesome. I wish I had time to have it every day. I have it on weekends when I have time to wait for it to cook. I have to have quick cook oatmeal during the week |

Hi Feanor: I do not believe in eating meat. It is a moral as well as health issue for me. I would never ask my husband to do something he was morally against and he does not ask that from me. He understands and accepts this. I have explained to him why. I also have a pet potbellied pig who lives in our house with us. He sees her intelligence and understanding of the world around her and has learned a lot about animals from her simply by watching her. He also knows me as a person and sees when I get upset about what happens to animals in our world. There is not an adversarial atmosphere in our home, in fact quite the opposite. He respects my passion and compassion for animals. He would never cook meat for me or expect me to eat it, nor does he make me feel guilty for not eating meat. I think my post might have been confusing. I was simply explaining how everyone has a right to choose what works for them. |

Hi! I was vegan and then started eating cheeses and yogourt when I hit menopause early this year. I'm 39 and people were scaring me regarding osteoporosis (although I know better due to my own research from years ago) and I began eating dairy. I gained weight and started getting colds. Gross phlegmy colds. I read the Skinny Bitch book and that got me back on track. Dairy is gross and does gross things to your body. You can try carbonated mineral water to get the feeling of drinking soda without the bad qualities. I'm hooked on it. Just be careful not to get the ones with too much sodium. I drink President's Choice. Haunting the health food store as much as I do has opened my eyes to all the alternatives for gluten free diets. Do you have trouble finding foods you can have? I bought a couple of vegan cookbooks yesterday that I am so excited to try recipes from. One is a Vegan Italian style - not a lot of pasta in it surprisingly and the other is just a general recipes one which has tons of yummy looking things in it. I'd have to check that one to see if its got gluten free recipes. It must be hard for you but then again, if you're like me, you like a challenge to find healthy things to eat that also taste great! You're so right, the Skinny Bitches do make total sense and I love their delivery method. I laughed through the book which gave me such a positive attitude about it. My best friend and I talk like that all the time and people think we are horrible but it does get the point we are making noticed so I guess there is something right about it! Nice to meet you!! |

| I completely disagree with the part about the Skinny Bitch book. There is a whole chapter in the book about the treatment of animals in factory farms and in slaughterhouses. Their primary point in the book is to open people's eyes about what is going on around them and what they are putting into their bodies. The last chapter explains that the book is not about getting skinny, its about getting healthy. They actually promote eating in the book a lot. It was a fantastic book and definitely not about "getting skinny" but rather about "getting healthy". | |||

I have been a vegetarian for 17 years and primarily vegan. I'm hardcore vegan now and have recently cut even more out of my diet (processed foods, aspartame, caffeine, white flour, refined sugar etc.). My husband is not a vegetarian but if he wants me to cook for him he is! He gets a little weird about my food choices sometimes and this is upsetting so I totally understand what you are saying. People in general do get very "affected" by other's food choices because it makes them look at themselves. This really has very little to do with you but is about them. Your food choices work for you and that should be it. You have to be a little thick skinned and stick to your guns. When people assure you that they eat very little meat, just smile. Its them making themselves feel better. When people tell you they could never give up meat, just smile. Its such a silly thing. Who cares what others eat? If people ask me why I eat the way I do, I give an honest answer. I never force my opinion on others. No one likes being preached at. I do however tell the honest truth when I am asked for my opinion. When it comes to having people over, I prefer to serve vegetarian meals. My husband thinks that this is forcing my opinion on others. I refuse to cook meat period. It will not happen. If he will cook them meat then they can have it. I won't be a part of it at all. I do however, make sure to do a good hearty soup or some kind of appetizer that will fill them up and not leave lots of room for the meat! HA! I think that people like to try new things and see that vegetarian meals are yummy when done right and you leave the table satisfied and happy. My husband to this day still marvels at the things that we eat and loves it although he gets a little weird when others are in the mix. Rest assured that you can eat what you like, whether it makes someone else uncomfortable or not. Is your family apologizing to you for eating meat in front of you? No, so why are you apologizing for not eating meat? You shouldn't. If what is being served when you go out is not something you eat, bring something for yourself. I do this all the time and it actually makes the host relieved that they don't have to worry about your dietary specifications. Your husband will start accepting things once he sees that you are looking after yourself and not putting anyone else out. It just takes a bit of time. Reassuring him that you are not expecting him to follow your lead and that he is free to do as he pleases regarding food is all you can do. I think its great that you are vegan among lots of people who aren't. You should be proud of yourself and not feeling bad about it. |
