I use my elliptial for HIIT with great success. I keep the resistance at a challenging level, warm up for 5 minutes, alternate 30 seconds of sprinting (as fast as I can run) with 30 seconds of slower pace for as many rounds as my body allows (currently up to 12) then cool down for 5 min. The elliptical speed is controlled by the user allowing split second changes. I am totally wiped when I'm done- as you should be after doing HIIT. Go for it! |

DEADLIFTS! Your Bowflex can do it, but a barbell or dumbells work best. Heavy weights, 3 sets of 12, 3 times per week. Squats and lunges, too! |

| Weight Loss | Do I need to deduct extra calories from my "eat" target with hypothyroidism? If so, how many? | Feb 23 2009 13:07 (UTC) |

While it may take several months to find the medication dose that works to keep you at appropriate TSH level, once there, you should not be different than anyone else as far as your weight loss plans. Your MD will monitor your levels frequently and adjust your meds accordingly. The actual dosage is very individualized. Many people believe that taking thyroid replacements will make you lose weight- but that stems fom other decades when doctors purposely gave women high doses to use like a diet pill. The correct dosage will balance out your metabolism, taking too much can lead to other medical complications. I'm 46 years old and have had hypothyroidism for 18 years. 2 years ago, I changed both my eating and exercise habits and was able to lose 60 lbs and keep it off. Yes, the weight loss did effect my TSH levels and it's a constant "game" to keep me at the correct level. Seems like you are off to a great start if you are already losing, everyone's weight varies day to day so many will suggest only stepping on the scale weekly (personally, I am on it every morning). Best wishes! |

| The Lounge | Should obesity be considered a disability? | Feb 22 2009 13:57 (UTC) |

Well, what about smokers? Many receive disability becouse they need oxygen, have other severe respiratory issues, heart disease, stroke, etc. They chose to smoke thus bringing on those disabilities themselves. The same could be said about alcoholics and drug addicts. No easy answer! |

| Fitness | a lifting program that can be done completely at home?! | Feb 10 2009 13:16 (UTC) |

I have been weight training very successfuly at home for over a year with a set of adjustable dumbells, a barbell and a ball. I use the ball as a bench (flies, bench press, etc.)- depending where you put it under your back determines the incline and works your core as you balance yourself on the ball. For squats, I am usually able to recruit a family member to help lift the barbell over onto my sholders, or I use my dumbells. Best wishes for a positive change! |

Hi Jae, when I changed to a healthy lifestyle 18 months and 60 lbs. ago (I lost the weight in about 8 months time), I started out walking about 3 miles and it took me about 50 minutes and did some light strength training. For the shape I was in, that was the best I could do and it was effective because it was an increase in activity and a challenge for my fitness level at that time. As I progressed, I started adding in periods of running until I could do 3.5 miles in 30 minutes, then advanced to HIIT which gives me more bang for the buck but is certainly not for a beginner (of course, continued the "heavy" weights- that's been the BEST). As I'm sure you know, eating healthy is more than half the battle! Best wishes- any change in the right direction will have it's rewards! |

The 40 weeks is from the first day of your last menstrual period- ovulation usually occurs about day 14. Full term is anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks! Tape measure measurements of fundal height (top of the uterus) are an estimate but help your careproviders know that over time, your uterus is growing appropriately. Guess you could possibly get that tax deduction in for "08! Best wishes! |

| Weight Loss | If I'm awake for 30 hours is it ok to increase my calorie intake | Sep 21 2008 19:57 (UTC) |

I also work nights- 2 or 3 12 hour shifts each week, 7pm to 7 am. As a working Mom of 3, I also find I'm up sometimes for 24 hours+ so I understand where you are coming from. On those days, I feel like I eat all day, then all night also! I try to plan ahead and stay within my cals, but that doesn't happen. As I get more tired, of course I seem to crave more food, and not all of it good! I do feel that we must be burning up more cals as we are awake and active so I try not to sweat it too much. I do try to get in my daily workout and bring lots of healthy food to work (no money so I can't hit the vending machines) I know getting enough sleep is essential for weight loss, but this is just the way it goes for some of us! I have managed to lose 55 lbs so I thinkk I'm doing something right somewhere. Best wishes! |

| Fitness | HIIT on elliptical.....I know, another HIIT ? | Aug 26 2008 19:19 (UTC) |
2 |
Actually, the elliptical is one of the easiest cardio machines to do HIIT on because human power controls the speed and you can change the speed in a second. Find a resistance that pushes you a bit. I warm up for 5 minutes or so at a brisk walk, run as fast as I can for 30 seconds (doesn't sound like much but it's tough when you take it to your max), walk again for 1 minute (some people jog but I find I'm not able to ), run for 30, etc. for your desired amount of cycles then end with a 5-10 min. cool down. I complete my workout in 25 minutes. You can vary the length of your walking/running to your abilities. It may sound like 25 minutes is not nearly enough, but trust me, you are wiped out in a short period of time and that to me is another of the positives of HIIT! Good luck! |

Your TSH is midrange of normal and like anything else in the human body- it can fluctuate a bit. Thyroid hormone replacements are not for weight loss- thay are used to get hormone levels in a normal range for healthy heart, skin, reproductive system, metabolism, etc. in a very complicated endocrine system. It is not a magic fix and taking too much can seriously effect your health. You are 5'8" and exercise quite a bit. You're current calorie intake may be the issue as it is way low. Perhaps others can give you some input on effects of starvation/malnutrition on our bodies. Hopefully the doctor will also be helpful or refer you to a registered dietician. Hope you feel better! |

| Weight Loss | Weight loss with PCOS - can it be done? | Aug 04 2008 13:23 (UTC) |

As I'm sure you know, a component of PCOS is insulin resistance and this can make weight loss more of a challenge, but not an impossibility. Try researching food plans, such as South Beach Diet, that focus on the glycemic index. A visit to a Regestered Dietician would also be a wise step. Poke around on this forum and I'm sure you'll come across other threads dealing with PCOS and the posters here often have good advice and offer great support! Best wishes! |

| Fitness | Ouch, back spasm. Now what? | Aug 03 2008 19:42 (UTC) |
|
Oh Man, stop-dead-in-your-tracks-take-your-breath-awa y pain of back muscle spasm, my sympathies. Great suggestions so far. My experience has found that ibuprofen (Motrin) or naprosyn (Aleve) taken 'round the clock along with ice provide both the anti-imflamatory effect needed to calm that angry muscle as well as provide some deserved pain relief so that you can move without concern of triggering another agonizing spasm. Sometimes it's just the tiniest tug (sneeze, slight twist) that I've found can get me into trouble. I must say, yet another benefit from the weight training, is that me back muscles are VERY strong and (knock on wood) I've been good. Best wishes with this- YOUCH! |

| Fitness | I need to tone my arms in 43 days...help! | Jul 26 2008 01:35 (UTC) |

I'll be more encouraging as I found that when I began weight training, it showed almost right away in my arms and shoulders. As everyone else has said, you should be waiting at least 48 hours between workouts to let the muscle recover. Try push ups from your knees as bobhazen suggested, and compound exercises that work multiple muscle groups- lat. pull downs, bench presses, upward row, military presses, pull ups (if ya can) and tricep dips- those with weights use heavy enough that you struggle to complete 10-12 in the first set, and do 2 or 3 sets. Congrats and best wishes for your wedding! |

| Weight Loss | Any young nurses out there trying to get back in shape after nursing school? | Jul 24 2008 23:42 (UTC) |

Well, I'm also a nurse, 46 years young, but can certainly relate to your weight issues and working nights. My weight came on after having kids. Working 12 hour nights made it tough for me to exercise as I always felt tired ( you know what I mean!) and couldn't sem to find the time or motivation to work out or prepare healthy meals and snacks. At work, when the dreaded 4 am fatigue hits and the snacks come out from everywhere, will power was nonexistant! Next thing I knew, I was up 50 LBS!! Last year, I made a commitment to myself to fix this before my health and mobility were effected. I have changed to a "clean" eating pattern (I don't count a single calorie and eat at least 6 times a day) and exercise 6 days / week- no excuses! Sometimes that means giving up some precious sleep time, but I actually find that getting up and moving has given me more energy and I'm actually sleeping better in this screwed up world of us night-workers!! I always pack my own "lunch" for work and avoid the break room when the tables are piled with treats. I still feel like I eat 'round the clock on work days, but I'm making better choices and apparently the extra calories are needed. Long winded, sorry! Lost 55 lbs in a year but more importantly, I've changed my body composition and feel GREAT! I am no longer even tempted by sweets, which were my weakness. If I can do this at my age, you certainly can, too! Not so easy getting started- give it time. I can't begin to tell you how rewarding this change has been! You go, Girl! |

| Weight Loss | Abs after C-Section? | Jun 01 2008 19:04 (UTC) |

Hi! You are so not alone! I've also had 3 sections- verticle with a crooked scar that makes my belly look like a lop-sided butt! LOL Anyways, I think because we are women and have had babies (I work in a maternity unit), the abd fat and stretched out skin is a seemingly endless battle! Look at all of the previous posts from other frustrated females. Yes, you can strengthen your abd muscles with the usual exercises once you have approval from your MD. All women who have had pregnancies, no matter how the mode of delivery, can have diastasis of the recti abdominus (split abd muscles from the growth of the uterus) which is harmless. I've seen improvement with healthier eating and regular exercise and can feel the 6-pack under there somewhere. We all see those celebs who have flat abs after having children- someone has to keep Dr. 90210 in business! |

Hi! Saw the Abs diet on the today show last June. Thought the food choices seemed manageable and liked the idea of not weighing food or counting calories. Gave it a try- by Jan. had gone from 201 to 150 using the Abs diet- started with the recommended exercise plan, added in cardio and eventually started weight training with heavier weights. I was such a sweet junkie- now I don't even give it a second glance. My family is amazed how long the treats last at our house now! The food choices are that of "clean eating" and I've never felt hungry or bored. Easy to stay with this eating plan through holidays and restaraunts. As Angeleyes said, you really can eat a lot! What I like most- it's a nutritionally healthy way of eating that has worked for me! I joined CC this winter when I hit a plateau to see if watching my calories could help me breakthrough and found I really like the community forums and fitness advice so I'm hooked! GOOD LUCK! |

| Weight Loss | MAJOR plateau - PLEASE HELP! =) | Mar 21 2008 22:08 (UTC) |
|
After losing 50 lbs (since 6/07), I too hit a plateau for a couple of months- which is how I found my way to CC. I know these "last ten" are frequently frustrating and I have been patient and hung in there. I know there is way more to this than the number on the scale- I love seeing the number on the tag of my jeans going down! Anyways, following the wonderful suggestions from everyone on this forum- I have increased my caloric intake (with healthy foods) and have changed my 60 min cardio to 30 min "HIIT" on the eliptical or running (weather permitting) or a step video (shaking up my routine every time) and increased weight/ decreased reps on strength days. I can appreciate how busy you are- I work full time and have 3 busy kids- so the quicker workout was a welcome change and best of all, it worked! Well, yey! It took almost 2 months to lose 4 lbs- but I am thrilled to see a trend down again! Hang in there and congrats on your loss so far, and on completing college! |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
