Quoting from someone else's journal means that you have something to back up your advice?

Don't mean to interupt your rant/pissing contest, but I thought puppykisses was refering to scientific journals, not cc+ ("someone else's") journals.

Uh, yeah...she was referring to scientific journals as an anology, in other words attempting to note a similarity between them and cc+. Thanks for wasting your time. As far as the "pissing contest", I have a very open mind, I'm simply trying to find some sort of actual evidence in regards to all of this advice that's floating around, call it what you will....

"Testimonials from people with a wide variety of fitness backgrounds, including this one from Lou Schuler "Alwyn Cosgrove is the most knowledgeable fitness trainer I've encountered in my 10-plus years as a fitness journalist"

Floggingsully, you've been following this philosophy long enough to provide some proof to it's validity then? no? Let's see a few before and afters. Or are we blindly handing out advice on these forums based on what we've read/heard....

I hit the bag after workouts regularly. My muscles tend to feel more loose and relaxed after pushing weight, so it's the perfect time to strike the bag. If you're really beating up that bag, you're also gonna break quite a sweat, which another reason I do the bag work last. Who wants to work out soaked in sweat and feeling funky.....

Quoting from someone else's journal means that you have something to back up your advice? Where I come from, physical results means backing up advice. Unlike the science field(bad analogy btw), the proof's in the pudding in the fitness/bodybuilding world, your results are physically visible. I can sit back and watch infomercials all day long then tell Joe Blow that Chuck Norris' Total gym is the hottest breakthrough in fitness technology of all time. Let's see those bicep photos instead of reverting back to the t-nation articles, people. I want to see some results from this 5x5 program instead of words of praise...

Quoting articles and comments from fitness journalists is great, but I learn from my own personal trial and error. I can bench over 300 lbs at a bw of 160, so I've gotta be doing something right...I use a split routine which includes a myriad of bench press assistance exercises and plenty of triceps training

Yeah spiro, curls are such a waste of time, why would anyone want to directly train and build one of the more visible muscles of the body(with clothes on) of the upper arm, I suppose any form of tricep training is a desecration also.

As Alwyn Cosgrove puts it here: "Somehow this highly developed organism that we call the human body is not a remarkable piece of machinery that functions flawlessly as a unit, it's just random ass "parts" put together - each of which can be worked seperatly"

It's also been shown that trying to 'directly train' a muscle won't provide any additional results if you're already doing compound lifts.

Alwyn Cosgrove or Arnold....who's advice should I heed...

And I'd love to see some photo testimonials from Cosgrove's clients, or those who use his philosophy? Alwyn doesn't look so impressive himself...

If you train the compound lifts correctly, the secondary emphasis on the bi's during pulling motions, or tri's during pushing movements should be very minimal, meaning that you're not achieving microtrauma in the assistance muscles, meaning minimal muscle hypertrophy.

Yeah, that stuff has way too much filler. "Natural flavors" can leagally describe anything approved for use in food. All peanut butter must contain 90% peanuts by law, and the amount of hydrogenated oil to prevent seperation is pretty much insignificant, so you're better off sticking with the real deal, whether it's natural PB or good ole Skippy...

Cutting healthy fats out of peanut butter and replacing with filler and chemicals just sounds really dated. Yeah, totally picturing my mom sipping on a Tab soda, performing her A-E-I-O-U facial exercises in the mirror straight out of her Richard Simmons book, and choking down a spoonful of Better'n peanut butter while listening to Kool and the gang back in the late 70's.

Get at least 5 reps in, and use a challenging weight that allows no more than 12...I wouldn't bother counting reps religiously, use the number as a guideline, but by all means, don't stop at 5, 8, or 10 reps if your body has a few left in the tank, your progress will stall quickly if you don't expend maximal effort.

Fitness I hate barbell rows Aug 24 2008
01:42 (UTC)

I used to powerlift(not super competitively, only entered one natural bench contest), it built a great foundation of muscle and strength before I started watching my calories and such....even then I too hated bent over rows, they simply felt grueling after heavy deadlifts, and were brutal on my lower back and hammies. Barbell t-bar rows are about as daring as I get these days tried the Penlay rows today, and actually enjoyed doing them. I grew up emulating Arnold's style on "Pumping iron", by standing on a platform so the weight wouldn't touch the ground, keeping my upper body parallel to the floor. Needless to say, my hamstrings were as/more pumped than by middle-upper back muscles by the end of the set. Good info Melkor, Thanks

Diet pills are lame. I often wonder what longterm effects of all these diet pills and energy drinks will have on people after prolonged use. Nothing worse than seeing skinny teenagers drinking gigantic 24oz Rockstars and Monsters, has to be rough on the liver & kidneys. What's the deal with little young f-ers not having plenty of energy to spare, anyway.....

You're better off using agave nectar, it has a much lower glycemic value...Here's a nice tidbit of info that might answer your  question, though...

Honey is made from distilled flower nectar in a bee's stomach. (Aren't you GLAD you asked? :^D )
Look for your honey "Raw" and purchase it locally if possible. Imported honey does not have the same requirements for additives that US honey has. Also honey gathered from your local area is reported to help build up the body’s immunities to local allergens. Also, it helps your local beekeeper and helps them build your local economy.

"what do u think about when people stand infront of a mirror and flex for extended periods of time. Its perfectly fine to flex your arm or or other muscle that you worked out, but when they stand there checking every part... thats my pet peeve"

Yeah, I'd rank those douchebags right up there with the dudes who scream at the top of their lungs when performing each repitition. It's been scientifically proven that the extra yelling when performing a rep doesn't assist the lift, just helps to accomplish a sore throat and idiocy...

...and don't get me started on those lops who like to allow their dumbbells to crash down to the floor with full force after performing a set of db bench presses

I enjoy Clif, Odwalla, and Trio bars. If you wanna kick the protein digits up a notch, Clif builder bars are great. Pretty much everything else on the shelves are chock full of hfcs or gas-precursing sucralose.

Alton Brown made homemade protein bars on good eats also, so if you're into baking:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brow n/protein-bars-recipe/

I made a couple of different variations of this recipe by omitting the dried fruit and adding mashed banana and coconut flakes/chocolate chips...Ok, probably not quite as healthy as the original but pretty friggin tasty nonetheless...

Vietnamese people are typically very lean, I wouldn't worry about gaining weight over there, their diet is super low in calories.. I used to live in a city heavily populated w/vietnamese, on occasion I would eat at a vietnamese market that sold  sandwiches with pork, carrots, cilantro, jalepenos, and onions on a thin baguette...good stuff

There are plenty of organic/healthy places to eat in the more health-concious cities across america(San Francisco, etc.), but let's face it...most peoples' idea of healthy eating is selecting from the weight watcher's menu at Applebee's, or the fresco menu at taco bell. Here's a place I dine at when visiting Santa Barbara, check out the menu...a place like this most likely wouldn't last long in my town, unfortunately
