Fitness 5K/10K personal bests -- but how do I stack up? Sep 12 2008
14:05 (UTC)

congrats! honestly i think racing and running is just personal. i am a 10-10:30 runner and i am very proud of that! depends if you're going for speed or distance or what!!! are you doing any upcoming races? in timed/scored races you get graded on sex/age etc which is helpful on seeing where you stack up. apparently (though i'm still ina  ramp up phase and not too concerned re: speed) speedwork really will speed up your longer distance runs.... try intervals and chk out runnersworld.com for a training plan and/or suggestions.

running is great over all though. cardiovascularly its fantastic and while strength/circuit training will rev up metabolism yes, i still think cardio is an important piece of getting in shape and being healthy. esp if you like wogging- don't stop! try incorporating some weights into your routine. chk your eating as your apetite will increase from the added activity and drink loads of water. also take measurements- did you think you were gaining weight?

Fitness New to Running - any advise? Aug 08 2008
14:04 (UTC)

i also just want to add that running- esp mult times a week and for distance isnt a beginner activity per say (meaning someone who hasnt exercised for yrs is more prone to injury and pain from running than say a modified c to 5k program or something else). i say this bc i had a weak back from surgery (but was allowed to do everything etc) and had major problems (back pain, shin splints etc) from running 2-3 miles 2x a week until i started strength training and working on my core. now i run about 12-15 miles a week and I am fine- no injuries and feeling great...

cuold be multiple things. first off are you eating well/properly? if youre eatng the same (which sounds like you say you are) could be muscle gain, water retention, body thinking its starving and holding on to weight in combo with any of the above....its also advised to have a rest day or two when youre working out intensely so that your body recovers....

Fitness sorry men- time of the month question! Jul 14 2008

there are some months where i am definitely more fatigued durring ttom vs. others. i think a lot of it has to do with sugar and iron in my case though... since i've cut out sugar (meaning cakes, candies etc) i seem to have more enery month round... pretty interesting although obvious. also do you get enough iron? slight anemia coupled w ttom can add to that "theres no way i can work out" mind set.

Fitness Good Excercises for bum/back of the thighs that don't require equipment?? Jul 11 2008
16:14 (UTC)

well i think a lot of women have this problem... in terms of the upper body slimming out and the lower half taking its time... i'm currently in that phase too although my lower half has shrunk and my mid section is largest? (how did that happen?!) anyway here is my 2 cents:

1) deadlifts. one leg deadlifts (think like a stork) then progress to one leg balanced deadlifts.

2) sit on a chair/stool block (vary the height to see what is challening to you.) do one leg standups. so literally use only one leg to stand up (sounds easy until youre doing reps/set). when that gets easy advance to standing up with one leg and doing a high kick with the other (straight in front not billy blanks style).

3) lunges. then jumping lunges. then weighted lunges.

4) squats- make them jumping squats to spruce it up... its slimmed my legs a ton

5) do you have a ball? if so try lying on your back, feet up on the ball and lifting up your hips while rolling the ball into your body (almost underneath you). same exercise can be done in a plank position with your feet on the ball and you roll is towards you... this slims thighs (in my experience) like none other.

ok those are just off my head... keep it up! it'll happen.

Fitness What's the difference between a weighted squat and a deadlift? Jun 13 2008
15:43 (UTC)

deadlifts actually work your core whereas squats are more for the glutes and hammies/quads. when i do deadlifts i tend to lean towards a variation which i call storks since i do them on one leg.... (not a typical deadlift). regular deadlifts do strengthen your core though.

Fitness headache? Jun 13 2008
15:41 (UTC)

one word- dehydration.

dehydration headaches are the worst. try drinking more water.

if its not that perhaps you have allergies, a cold, a virus or a tumor  or an alien living in your head!!!(just kidding)! but in all seriousnes perhaps you ate differently or had consumed more salt leading you to require more fluids. Just a guess seeing as I had one yesterday from which I thought I would die! Theyre painful!

Fitness Do you eat before you run? Jun 13 2008
15:39 (UTC)
12

i always eat. usually if its a 5m+ run (which my am runs usually are between 5 and 7 miles) i eat a yogurt and a small bun or piece of bread. then i carry beans and eat a pack around mile 3 or 4 and then i have a glass of milk after a bottle of water when i'm done... then more water and a meal about 1-2 hrs after. typuically if its an 8 or 830 run... i wake up at 630. eat. and then go back to bed for an hr! ha. but thats just me.

if i am running 30 min or so i typically will eat 1/2 c of both cereal and milk and call it a day. i usually eat that about 30-45 min before. longer runs i need more digestive time for.

Fitness Female muscle gains - is this unusual?? Jun 12 2008

agree with some of the posts above (mainly from the helpful other women!) i always thought i bulked up but as my trainer puts it- the only thing that maeks you bulk up is what you put in your mouth. yes blood and water retention will make you swell but i bet if you watch your diet a bit more carefully you'll see the inches slide off.

it is uber important for done density, muscle mass and general health to lift so keep it up!

tank top for sure. although a more fitted t shirt will be ok. depends on the class. tankini type tops are best. agree on the yoga pants. there are some that are more givign and boot legged... plus they have stretch which is imperative in yoga--- going in say cotton pj pants wont cut it- id be afraid they'll rip! good luck and stick with it. you might not love it after class one but i think you will soon thereafter!

ha-- i agree. sometimes i catch myself stopping too. and i hear you on not being able to work out hard core the next day!!

i dont see how you could use a band but then again im not too familiar with it. watch it and see if you know how to modify. i mean weights are for bicep curls, resistance while you squat, rows, lat raises...

i couldnt do it everyday. i do think there is harm in doing it everyday if you're not say jillian or her cohorts... i mean i know that if i try i lose form and if you lose form you're at risk of injury.

with that being said though, if you could do it flawlessly with the exception of te idea that youre working the EXACT same muscles theres no harm per say.

I think working it in 2 or 3 timse a week and eventually varying up the levels is ideal. But thats just MHO.
