Fitness Five pounds, six days? Feb 12 2009

My first thought is, why are you starting now? Is joining the National Guard a recent decision? If not, why haven't you been training?  I plan on playing tennis for my college starting August so I started now.  Someone who hasn't done exercise in 3 years and uses the work "weak" doesn't sound like you are ready for the NG.  I'm not saying you shouldn't join or that you can't ever be ready.  I'm saying you shouldn't join now.  Give yourself a few months to train for it.  Then you won't have to resort to things like body wraps and hurting yourself.  Just my thoughts.  You can agree or disagree but whatever you do, good luck.

I have to agree with the other comments.  You are not eating enough.  For someone that is as tall as you, 132 is fine.  You can probably gain another 10 and it will still be the right weight range.

Ease up on the weight or reps and see if there is a change.  You may be overdoing it and not know it.  If you are doing 3 days a week, cut it to 2 and do something aerobic instead.

Weight Loss Calorie Count or Weight Watchers? Jan 10 2009

I did WW meetings and lost 2 pounds in 2 months.

I switched to CC, ate more calories, and lost 8 pounds in 1 month.

That's reason enough for me to say hell no to WW.  I've heard others say it works for them but I think that this site is much better.  Plus, converting everything to points is a pain in the ass.  The calories are right on the box or bag for what you eat.

Your brain thinks you are starving.  Severe calorie restriction is interpreted as a famine so the body will hold on to every morsel you put into your mouth because it thinks that the food won't be there later.  Don't step on the scale for a month.  Eat at least 1200 calories a day.  In a month you may be more, you may be less. But you most certainly will be better off than you are now.

1. It's not an exact science because every body works differently.  Bottom line is if you eat less and more more, you lose.  When you plateau, don't eat less.  Move even more.

2. This seems to be true. My very heave friend lost 20 pounds exercising about 10-15 minutes a day for several weeks.  I lose quicker than a person that is smaller than me.  I believe the main reason is that we have so much more to carry around that it is harder and more work for us so we drop it quicker at first.  Then this rate slows down as we lose and get smaller.  Another reason for this change in the rate of weight loss has to do with the hypothalamus in the brain which regulates your weight setpoint.  Your body percieves any weight loss as a famine (because your body still thinks we live in the stone ages when food could be scarce and holding onto fat was vital for life.)

Bottom line: Keep doing what you are doing and you will see results.  Its the consistency that counts more than anything.

Calling it a "lifestyle change" is the new packaging for diets.  I totally agree with you.  It's another marketing tool too.

"Diets don't work.  Weight Watchers does." for example.

The problem is that it is so challenging and takes a long time to establish a habitual lifestyle change.  I think people are really trying to change, but it's hard and the road is riddled with setbacks.  They are discouraging.  I've been discouraged lately because of my setbacks but I keep going anyway and do what I can.

This is why it's stupid to use antibacterial soap . It just adds to an ever building resistance of bacteria and why so many antibiotics are now ineffective against bacteria.

As for women being "dirtier" get real.  Men are slobs, always have been and always will be.  The study even says that the difference has nothing to do with handwashing but has more to do with differences in the acidity of skin in men vs. women and the use of cosmetics.

Young Calorie Counters Why Am I Gaining??? Oct 16 2008
13:21 (UTC)

I totally agree. you should see your doctor to determine what you should be eating.  You were too thin.  The body will hold on to anything it gets if it goes into a starvation mode because your body percieves what you are doing to it as a famine.

You sound like you are doing all the right things.  I had this problem a while back, or atleast something similar.  I was walking a lot and the heels of my feet hurt a lot.  I used ice and rested, occassionally used icy hot and for me it went away.  Keep doing what you are doing and definately see your doctor.  As for exercising, give it a few days.  If you go to a gym, use a stationary bike for a while to keep the impact off of your feet or swim.  Good luck!

Pick up a book on art history and look at the depictions of women.  NONE of them look like Paris Hilton.  They are beautiful curvy and healthy women.  The Paris Hiltons of the world need a cheesecake or two shoved down their throats.

Everyone is different.  If eating a larger dinner helps you stay on track and you are dropping weight, keep it up. If you think it is somehow undermining your efforts, decrease it by 200 or 300 calories and add a snack before or after dinner.

I've lost 4 in the past week.  I'm not on any diet plan. I use calorie count and try to stay under the calorie burn meter amount and exercise.  I shoot for 30 minutes a day on my eliptical machine.  I think using exercise is really the only way to make it permanent.  Otherwise I gain it back.

Weight Loss Question about calorie calculator Sep 07 2008

You probably fit into the light activity slot.  Plug in what you do and the calorie burner will show you what you need to maintain.  Reduce that number by about 500 to lose a pound a week. On your working days my might be moderate activity but just add that to your activity column and it will be calculated.  Again, reduce by about 500.

I'm Kim, 5'2", 25 yrs old, college student, weighing in at 251.  I dropped 4 from 255.  My goal is 225.  I want to go beyond that but that is my first goal.  If I can get to 225, I'll feel a lot better physically.

I struggle with depression so motivating myself to exercise and avoiding binging are hard.  But I know that my depression would be better if I were healthier.

sully is right.  you can't spot train to lose fat.  The body has so many chemical processes going on that you simply can't tell it where to lose and where to gain.  Reduce fat all over and your arms will reduce too.

Weight Loss Eating more, loosing weight and getting a belly??? Sep 07 2008

A protruding belly in 3rd world countries is a sign of a lack of protein.  If you were in starvation mode, you might be having a similar problem.  Go to your doctor to see if this is the problem or rule it out.  If it isn't, you are probably bloated or gassy.  Changing your diet will do that.  Stick to your new healthier diet.  But def go to your doctor.

Don't eat less. If you want to do penance, make it cardio.

Totally agree.  Don't decrease your ammount.  Exercise.  You might want to increase your daily caloric intake to keep binging at bay.  The weekends are meant for relaxation, so allow yourself a meal of your own choosing that is one of your favorites.  Do this once a week and you won't feel so deprived.

I think I say this one, about the guy who secluded himself to lose weight.  He was eating between 250-400 calories a day and didn't have the energy to exercise.  TOO EXTREME.  He cut out his friends and family and quit his job.

The last part of the show was him still struggling to eat normally.

If you eat that little, an increase will put it back on.  He screwed up his body and metabolism.

Diets don't work.  Never have, never will.  Temporary fixes are just that, temporary.  Doing it on my own I lost 4 pounds in a week last week.  On Weight Watchers I lost that in 2 months.  I didn't even intend on losing that much.  I exercised 3 times, did my normal activity, and even at over 2000 calories most days.

Got to agree with everyone else.  Like he's never masturbated himself.  As for you doing it in your sleep, you may or may not remember have a sexual dream and you may have been acting it out.  It happens to people and it's totally normal.  Your bf needs to chill out.  Tell him exactly what happened.  And if he's acting stupid about it, don't sleep with him until he grows up.

Weight Gain Is this healthy?? How was my day? Sep 07 2008

Just my opinion even though I'm not an expert on weight gain, other than doing it myself unintended, I would say you ate too small of a breakfast, which probably made you ravenous later.  A cup of milk and a pair isn't a lot.  It is a good start.  Maybe you should add toast or cereal and an egg white.  Or maybe oatmeal.  I wouldn't worry about eating 4 bars in a day but don't make it a regular thing either.  You would have been better off eating another frozen dinner.  Your frozen dinner at 7pm was less calories than the two bars put together.  I'd say no more than two of those energy bars a day, but double check with a nutritionist.  They are good for either gaining or losing weight though so that seems fine. You should definately eat more vegetables.  Add a side of broccoli to your butter chicken.  For lunch, have a small salad with your meal.  Adding protein is a good way to go as well but your sample day seems fine in that respect, except maybe add an egg or two for breakfast.

I hope some of this helps.  Again I'm not an expert but I have learned enough about nutrion over the years to become an unofficial nutritionist.

Weight Loss This topic may be posted daily, but seriously... Sep 06 2008

Possible reasons according to your information:

1. not enough aerobic activity. You said you lift a lot so you probably have lost fat but gained muscle.  That's a good thing.

2. unrealistic timeline. You aren't that far over your goal weight so it will take you longer to reach it.

3. if you take certain medicines, your metabolism can be affected.

I think more than likely that 1. and 2. are the problem.  It will take time for you to lose and you aren't doing enough aerobic activity to get your heart rate up.  That doesn't mean you aren't in better shape than when you started.  Stop looking at the scale as your guide.  It won't tell you the difference between muscle and fat.  Do more aerobic activity and I think you will be pleasantly surprised to see the pound starts dropping again.

If you were trying to only drop 30 pounds you would lose between .5 and 2 pounds a week.  But your initial starting weight causes you to lose it faster if you are heavier.  I freaked when I lost 4 pounds in a week but I realized it is because I am so heavy.  I wouldn't worry about sagging skin so much but you might want to consider doing strength training and a daily skin routine with cocoa butter on the most vulnerable areas where your skin might sag.  Keep it up!

The Lounge Should I quit? Sep 06 2008

Don't kill yourself over a crap job for some spending money.  You can either go to management and express your concerns to see what can be done or you can just quit.  I would suggest first going to management if you think the job is salvagable, if not, just leave.  Give your 2 weeks.  Look into work-study at your college campus.  You may not know this but you might be eligable for some welfare because of your age and because you are a college student. You don't need to have a child to recieve help. Most people don't know that.  It might vary by state.  And they figure if they get you though college, you won't suck on them like a leech later on in life.  Not that you would, but so many people do.  You should apply to find out.  It couldn't hurt.

Fitness Different walking routines produces different results. Your thoughts. Sep 06 2008

1. Throw that magazine away.  It's a bunch of BS.

2. Either workout will get you into shape.  Doing more hills will strenghen your leg muscles, not necessarily slim them.  Your body will first use up the fat in the part of your body where it is in excess, usually the abdomen but sometimes your breasts get hit first.

3. Just walk.  Forget what the "experts" say.  They are going after the all mighty dollar and most of them don't even have a degree in science, nutrition, or fitness.
