for me, if I've made a good amount of progress in losing weight (3.5 lbs this week!) then for 1 day I'll allow myself to have 200-400 extra calories that day, but I'll still plan it out. My conscience usually helps me to avoid pigging out on like twice my allotted calories, but for example, indulging in half a veggie pizza for one day, as long as I go back to my normal calorie target the other 6 days, I'll still be ok by the next time I weigh myself.

I think its better to treat yourself than to go crazy and eat everything regardless of calories, because once you hit your goal weight, you want to be able to maintain that weight which means still being mindful of what you eat...

my two cents

spose it could just be a genetic predisposition on some level, as well - but if i were a parent i'd be concerned about my kid and ask a doctor about weight issues

Vegetarian Vegetarians are feisty beasts! Mar 08 2009

My personal opinion is that unless a vegan/vegetarian diet is very carefully managed, its actually not healthy for the human body - we evolved to eat both vegetables AND meat.

That said, it is totally everyone's own choice how they want to eat. I will add here that I was vegan for about 15 years for medical reasons, so I do know what I'm talking about. As long as vegans/vegetarians don't condemn me for eating a well-rounded diet that includes meat, I have no problem.

And I totally respect those who don't eat meat because of concern over how domestic animals are treated - I think there are more effective ways than veganism to deal with that problem, but raising awareness is the first step, and many vegans do that.

yeh I've had it done twice, once with a female doctor (which was actually quite comfortable, if a bit weird) and once with a male doctor (which actually was painful because I wasn't expecting to get it done at that particular appointment, and he was of the quicker-is-better mentality)

i prefer female docs, but i'm glad ur experience was alright :)

2 lbs is prolly just undigested food/water =p

I actually managed to lose 1.5 pounds over halloween week. my trick? eating foods that require more calories to digest than they give. Pumpkins and squash are in season now, so aside from a handful of chocolate and caramel last night, that was my treat :)

I dunno about ticks, but I work with wildcats in the Pacific Northwest and we've got the worst flea problem I have ever seen... which seems unusual - and they're like superfleas, nothing will kill them lol

so i understand

well thanks for all the advice :)

would it make sense to exercise, say 4 days a week or so, and on the days I exercise eating around 1500 cal, but going back to 1200-1300 the days I don't exercise?

or is that just being nitpicky and stupid?

How does your calculator figure things differently that the calculator on CC? Give me math >:}

Okay, what I was TRYING to say there (and kind of failing) is that on the tools thing in CC, when I put in how many calories I should eat, it tells me 1250 for both sedentary and light activity. I don't really have time to exercise more than what would be called light activity, and I'm probably somewhere in between S and LA.

Though that'll probably change next month when I start my internship (helping to care for small wild cats).

well, I eat 5 meals a day, and when I put in my body type, etc, etc into the tools thing on CC, it says I should eat 1250 to lose weight. Usually I eat around 1200-1350. The last week I've been eating a bit less, but that's just cause its that time of the month and I get queasy.

Even when I did exercise 1/2 hour every morning, it didn't seem like enough to allow me to eat more... the sedentary/light activity thing in the tools menu is kind of vague... but taken literally, I don't think that amount of exercise changed the amount of cals I could eat.

What does BMR stand for again?

I've been eating around 1250 calories, give or take 100 depending on the day and my mood, and I've been losing 1-2 lbs a week so far (except for last week, where my scale said I lost 4... *is skeptic*)

I'm 5'1" and 22 years old

200 lbs (and losing!)

sedentary, though I'd like to start exercising soon... *motivational issues*

Its the stupidest thing lol

I looked on the back of the scale and it says "DO NOT OPEN. IN THE CASE OF MALFUNCTION, SEND TO SERVICE FOR REPAIR. THERE IS NO BATTERY TO REPLACE."

can't afford another scale, but I think it'll be okay now that I've stopped panicking and resumed drinking my low-cal morning beverage :)

I can't believe that old scale though O.O no battery??

Hmm. Wel the old scale just randomly said "L" one day and wouldn't say anything else, so i dunno what was up with it. I deleted all my previous weight log to start again from what this new shiny scale says.

I tried moving it around on the floor, and when its on a flat surface, I don't weigh as much as if its on a crooked surface. I think I stepped on it like 10 times, and after getting the same thing 8 times, I was just like fine XD. I also cant figure out how to calibrate it.

The tape measure is a good idea. I should start doing that.

Thanks for all the commiseration, guys! ^-^

Health & Support Do You Love or Loathe Doctors???? Mar 25 2008

Depends entirely on how they tell me. I had one doctor who was very nice about it - she showed me the assorted charts and provided sources of information about losing weight. I didn't mind the information from that doctor, although she tended to be a bit preachy, and I managed to escape a discussion about heart health... but I didn't mind because she was trying to help.

My sister, however, had a very grouchy doctor, and my sister was having trouble with her ankles (she had been walking a lot, and had pretty bad shinsplints). The doctor rather rudely told her that she was overweight and when she lost the weight the shinsplints would go away. While this is an accurate diagnosis, it hurt my sister's feelings and she struggled for a long time with insecurity issues and doctor issues. That doctor I do in fact hate. That and other doctors I've had who think they know what's best for you (ex. I TOLD this doctor that Amoxocillin doesn't work for me anymore because I've had so many ear infections during my childhood. What does she do? Gives me Amoxocillin)

There are good and bad doctors. My advice is, if you have a nasty doctor and are able, switch to a different one because there are good doctors out there.

Foods Jamba Juice - smoothies Mar 25 2008

I always get the smallest size, but I let myself get any flavor I like - the calories on that run from about 170-300 so I usually count each as 200, the average.

For me, the key to dieting is not to get caught up in counting each little tiny thing (otherwise it becomes a pain in the ass and I lose motivation). So I only count calories, and if I'm not 100 % certain about the calorie content, I estimate on the high side. It's working so far - I've dropped nearly ten pounds! Combined with exercise, I think this is a better way than trying to avoid sugars and carbs and stuff (unless you've got other health problems)

Jamba Juice is really the healthiest food you can get (at least around here) if you don't want to make something yourself. So enjoy it rather than obsessing over the nutrition - as long as you don't get JJ every day in large sizes, you should be fine.
