Hi Brig,

Sorry I didn't responded to your email. It's been one of those weeks but I'm here. I ate way too much this week, so I'm all for the "buddy system". What day should we target? I'm flexible ...in my schedule, not physicallyWink

Hi Brig,

I saw your poat in January but had a few vacations and realized that it was futile to attempt to watch weight until I was back home. here I am...Had got down to 134 but now am back up to 140. I really don't belong in the "40ish" group anymore, as I turned 50 last July. Hopefully I can stay as a 40ish at heart?

I'd love to get back into CC.  really could use the help of some motivational buds. Anyone still around?

Hi, I'm from Edinboro - 15 minutes sounth of Erie,  about 2 hrs from Buffalo, Pitts. or Cleveland. I'm familiar with Bradford and Dubois (my husband is from CA and pronounces Dubois French like "Do-Bwah"...we still have some conversions to work on). I grew up in Millcreek, college in Hawaii, but came back to the "Mistake on the Lake". Lived in McKean (Erie county) for 20 years and Edinboro for the last 7.

Ugh! Friday already???  Brig, you did great! Digi, I know how disappointing that gain can be. I'm betting it's just the TOM. I don't have that excuse anymore but I can remember those days! Okay, here's my numbers:

Starting weight: 148

Goal weight: 125

Current weight: 133.6

Change: none

The numbers show no change, but I was out of town at a show last weekend and on Monday morning I weighed in at 138! I don't understand how I can gain so much weight in a weekend but it happens whenever I do the shows. I really think it is lack of fluids and baking in the sun. I take water but it seems that I am no replacing as much as I am losing. Does that make any sense? Does anyone else have any ideas on this? I drank a lot of water on Monday-Wed. and by Thursday morning I was down 4 lbs.  I am home this weekend but leave again on Thursday for another. I'd like to avoid the 4-5 lb. gain if I can.

Thanks for any input,

Edie

Hi guys,

Welcome pjlittle and khp169.

I haven't been doing so well on my weight so feel I should get a bit more motivated, too. I started at 148 in Jan. I had got down to 131 by early May but am now at 133.6 today.  My goal was to be 125 by July 1...no way will I reach it. I will be happy getting to the 131 by July 1. But, I really need to start exercising again. I just don't have the ambition now that I am working 8-10 hrs. daily (and most of that time is spent on my feet). That's only for the next 7 months then it's sooooo slow for about 3, so I don't usually complain. In addition to work, hubby and I have an agreement that I do the summer yard maintanance (mowing, weeding, pond) and he does the winter work (plowing, etc), so I try to justify the yard work as my "exercise"(we have 6 acres). But I know I need to get back on the treadmill or walk outside(since that's good for osteo/bones), riding on a mower listening to music just doesn't count as exercise.

Cheryl, I had to laugh when you asked about the steroid injections disolving fat. I thought that they were kidding when they first told me what it was. My massage therapist thought I had a torn muscle. I "googled" fat atrophy and found several sites. I even found a picture of what mine looked like. The woman had injections to "fix" hers (she was a lot younger than me) but I just waited it out and within a year it filled in most of the way. It's hardly noticeable now, unless you are looking for it (and who sees my bare butt anyway???). here's the link to the pic. it's about the 4th one down on the page...the first set of photos that are of buttocks(not faces). http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.parkercenter.net/before_and_after_picture s/fat_injection_01a_small.jpg&imgrefurl=h ttp://##texthol der2##:&tbnh=42&tbnw=111&prev=/im ages%3Fq%3Dfat%2Batrophy%2Bfrom%2Bsteroid%2Bi njections%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN  It's too bad it looks so "scar-like" it'd be an easy way to lose this weight!

Good luck everyone for the weekend. Stay away from ice cream...it's the devil! (I'm sure my gain is the fault of Ben and Jerrys)

Cheryl, what a relief! Glad that ordeal is over for you.

Digigirl - good luck. Let's hope that it isn't rheumatoid. That is so painful. Let me know if you have any weird reactions to those steroid shots. I had cortisone injections in a hip about 18 months ago. I developed a "dent" in my left hip (it was so large that I could hold a golf ball in it!). The Dr. said that sometimes the steroid injection will do that. It burns the fat. I tried to get him to inject me the whole way down the back of my thighs Wink. I'd be interested to know if you have any of the smae symptoms. It took over a year for it to fill in and there still is a dimple.

Got it! I'm at 133#. My July 1st goal was originally 123# (but I will be content with 128 since that will be a 30 lb. loss since Jan.) I turn 50 on July 1 and my husband is throwing a huge party.  I don't wanna look old AND fat! Age is relative, fat isn't ;) My work schedule doesn't allow the party to happen until later in the month so  that gives me a couple more weeks to reach my goal. We can do this!

Can I join, too? I am older so I know it's tougher to lose, but I was doing so well until about 1 month ago then I just quit counting and exercising  and consequently put on a few lbs. I would like to lose 5 lbs. before July 1 (my 50th b'day). I was 133 this morning and am the same height as "chunkymonkey25" and also that I'm 5'2" as well (although I was only 5' until last year! thanks to osteo drugs!). I weighed under 100#  until 2 years ago so this is really depressing for me. I need motivated.

Cheryl, You have been on my mind all weekend. I'm glad that it wasn't horrid for you. Hopefully you'll hear soon. I am guilty of self-diagnostics,too, and would have done the same if I had to wait a long weekend in suspense! Good luck, and I'm hoping all is well...please keep us posted. btw...I have been in the "what diet" state for the last month. The scale says it's time for me to get motivated again.

Cheryl,

I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker and have been using it for about 5-6 years. It works great and it has that "cool" bowl that you can keep in the freezer. It's very easy to use and quite fast (about 1/2 hr.  to "firm up").  I used to (pre-CC)  make a lemon sorbet that was my favorite (too much sugar, but it may be good with stevia as a substitute).  There are a few recipes that I got from CC for frozen desserts, too.

Bjben,  My Dr. did a bone density test on me nearly a year after my periods had stopped. he ordered the dexa scan to get a "baseline" to keep watch since I was post meno. Unfortunately, my test showed the bones of a 90 yr. old woman. I have had dairy allergies (dairy triggers asthma for me) since birth so I think that is a big part of it. I wish I had listened to my mom all those years that she told me to take calcium supplements. A dexa-scan isn't very expensive (mine cost around $150, compared to my hip x-ray that cost $1000...I am self employed with minimal insurance, so my insurance doesn't cover any of the testing) and could give you a baseline (as well as peace of mind). Be sure to get lots of calcium and walking is good exercise to strengthen bones.

I will turn 50 on July 1 (AARP discounts...yippee).  My last period is difficult to say. When my Dr. put me on an HRT for my osteo and hot flashes I started having periods that wouldn't end (7 weeks one time). We tried 4 different HRTs and all had the same effect (even using the lowest possible dosage).  I would say that my last "real" period (without being hormone induced) was Feb./March of 2005 ( I was 46).  I just had an endometrial biopsy and internal sono in Feb. so I think all my parts are okay. All blood tests say I'm post-menopausal.  I really have to order that progesterone cream.

Happy Earth Day,  everyone. I had upped my calories last week (contrary to everything I believed) and was pleasantly surprised (it's worth the try, Cindy). On Friday I weighed 132. I'm only a little more than 5'1" and I still have 9 lbs. to lose to meet my goal, but at least I was in the "healthy BMI range"for the first time in a year. Unfortunately, yesterday I was at 136,then this morning I started a period! I'm blaming the sudden weight gain on this rather than the buffet I ate at my parents anniversary dinner Sat. night.  I am "supposed" to be done with periods. I'm a grandma for crying out loud! What is going on??? You would think after a couple of years they would just stay away! I'm hoping that it's a fluke and I won't have another...ever! Has anyone else had this happen?

You're so right, I worked in the yard today for what seemed like a couple of hours and when I finally checked, I'd been out there for 5 hours!  I will probably be sore tomorrow. Between raking and digging (I bought some trees to plant) and hauling bark and crap(literally) I should at least sleep well tonight. I'm just amazed that our weather changes so quickly...we had 20 degrees at night earlier this week and this afternoon was nearly 80.

Cheryl,  how's the diet going? Keep us posted on the results. It sounded like it was going well for you (with the exceptioon of the boredom factor).

Good luck this weekend, everyone.  Enjoy spring!

Yes, girls, there is a menopause fairy, but I think it's a male since the only good thing I got from "him" was the breasts, the rest is awful.  seriously, I went from a 32B to 34D in about 9 months. I know the weight had something to do with it but I've lost a lot of the weight and not the boobs. I'm not complaining...when I was younger (and immortal) I used to tell my Dr. that if he found a lump (during my annual exam) that I was keeping it...I needed all the help I could get.  (my previous husband had cancer so I'm not coy like that anymore)

Cheryl, I admire you for sticking to it this long! I bet the eggs are tiresome. How many days ahs it been? My Dr. recommended that I try a Mediterranean Diet. Do you know anything about it or ever tried it? I did some research online and I think it's just all the fruits, veggies,  and fish you want, just cut the carbs.

Molly, keep up the good work! You are my inspiration! I'm going to go "outside" to do my walk today. I'm so excited...it's 65 degrees here and it isn't even noon! yesterday I worked/cleaned my pond for about 3 hrs. I had to burn quite a few calories raking that wet smelly gunk out. Today I was nearly 2 lbs less than yesterday! Woohoo...guess what I'm doing for exercise after my walk?!?

Sounds like everyone is really losing it (and I mean that in a good way!).

Dawn, I am trying the increase in calories and so far it's working. I was 133.8 this morning...started at 148 Jan 15th.  I have lost 12" (and only 1" was from the bust, which I can't afford to lose, as I just recieved my breasts from the "menopause fairy"last year!).  I'm afraid I won't reach my goal (123# by July 1) but I am losing, it's just sooooooooo frigging slow.

Cheryl, I looked at your food diet and I just couldn't do it. I guess I'm a carb-addict (not to mention allergic to dairy and eggs, can only do them in small doses). It's great that it's working for you...and it seems to be working fast. Keep me posted on it, though, as I'm interested in whatever is working for others. And no way would we kick you off for not counting...wish I could follow suit!

Molly, gorgeous posies! Where do you live that it is so warm??? I am in eastern PA and it was 20 degrees last night. I woke to frost this morning and had to check on my pond to make sure my water lilies didn't freeze (I did loose my magnolia buds, again).

Digi, I had the same problems a few years ago with the irregular periods. It was so annoying...and very difficult to plan and pack for trips(I do a lot of travel in the summer months). I know that one month I bled all but 3 days! They weren't heavy days but nonetheless they were a nuisance.  That happened for about 1 year, then, they just stopped. There's hope...

Everyone, have a great week...

Cindy,

The vacation was great...we flew into Phoenix (MIL lives there), then drove to San Diego. Since I live in PA, the warm weather was quite welcome (although I did get a bit of sunburn on the whale watching cruise).

The full name for the disease is Hashimotos Thyroiditis. I thought they were kidding when they told me I had it since it sounds like such a phony name. Anyway, it's an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid gland. Since the thyroid gland helps set the metabolism rate, it really can cause havoc in the way of weight gain and difficulties losing weight.  Some of the symptoms are dry skin, muscle fatigue, depression, fatigue, weight gain (50 lbs. in 18 months). It's sometimes really difficult to be motivated for anything. I take synthroid (my hair fell out for 6 months when I first started it, but that has stopped...whew!)and will need to be on it for the rest of my life. Hashimotos is the most common form of hypothyroidism.

Dawn,

It sounds like you've found a great plan. Did you have to increase calories from what you were doing before? I have my activity level listed as light but am wondering if possibly I'm not eating as much as I should. CC has set my burn meter at 1800 and my calorie intake at 1300. I was having trouble eating the 1300...averaging 1100 for the last month. Since I got back from vacation, (I must've stretched my stomach) I am eating 1500 and I stepped on the scale this morning and am only .4 lbs. more than when I left. It's hard for me to believe that I could lose 2.5 lbs in 2 days and eating so much. I had been walking 5 miles, 5x week and I hadn't walked in 10 days. Yesterday I got on the treadmill, but could only did 2 miles. My thighs and butt hurt all evening! (I am hoping that was a good sign). I have to get rid of that "cottage cheese in a baggie" look on my hips and thighs!

I love salads...you can be so creative with them.  Today my lunch is a bed of spinach and romaine with some of last-nights leftover grilled salmon, sunflower seeds, red raspberries and orange sections with a ginger soy dressing. Yummy, and only about 150 calories.

I better quit talking and start walking, haven't done that yet today. Thanks for the motivation.

Hi all,

I've been MIA since April 1...vacationing and the scale showed it!  I gained 3 lbs. but wasn't too disappointed since I was expecting it to be 5 or 6.  I ate way too much and really rich foods (kinda sinful). Hopefully I can work it off.  I'm 2 weeks behind schedule for my goal weight.

Dawn, how did you lose 6 lbs. in 10-11 days?  That is fantastic!  I'm really interested in what you are doing. I haven't lost that much in the last 6 weeks.

I may have to try the Schwarzbein diet with Cheryl...although I'm not sure if I am disciplined enough to do it. (that's only 66 carbs per day, I average about twice that amount). It may be worth it to try it for a couple of weeks though. Cheryl, if you go back on that diet, keep us posted of your results.

Glad to be back and especially happy to see that this forum is active (and with new members).

Good luck to all,

Edie

Hello ladies,

Cheryl, it was a good idea to move to a new thread. The other one was getting pretty long. Thanks for notifying me of the change. Hopefully you won't kick me out when I turn 50 in 3 months?

I went for a nutritional testing today. I think I surprised the Dr. with all of the "ailments" that hit all within the last 2 years. She blamed the majority of them on menopause and has made some suggestions. I need to fill out a really in depth questionairre for my next visit.  I was intrigued with the visit and really liked the dr. (a woman in her early 40's). She uses vitamins, herbs and some natural hormones and doesn't prescribe meds. I was sceptical about the visit but came out feeling better about it.  I had exhibited at a women's expo a few weeks ago and she was represented in the next booth so I had some time to talk about her treatments and didn't go in blindly.

Incidently, she talked to me a bit about the progesterone cream that we had been discussing on the prior thread. She brought it up without me mentioning it! So, that's a definate change I'll be making.

Valerie,

16 lbs is fantastic! I weigh on Tuesdays and only lost .4 lbs. in the last week. It was very discouraging. I thought that I'd lost more.

How did you do (on the scale) after the business trip? I am leaving on Friday for a family vacation and I know it is going to be bad for me. I'll have to work harder when I get home, I guess.

I'm not sure if it is harder to work outside the home or at home. My husband works from home, too, and all day is a food fest for him. He has gotten to the point of eating candy bars and snacks in his office so I don't see.  I have sunflower seeds in my studio (I don't have to worry about him touching them). We used to eat breakfast and lunch together. Now, we still eat in the same room but each make our own meals. It seems silly but I just can't allow myself the foods that he eats or I'd weigh another 50 lbs. I think if I were to work outside the home I may not be tempted so often. I am being very good since starting CC but it hasn't been easy...just disciplined.

Angie,

I did bought a small flat screened  tv that I set up in front of my treadmill. I was only walking about 20-30 minutes per day before the tv but now can do 5 miles easily while watching. If it's a really good movie, I have been known to walk the full 2 hours!

Good luck everyone,

Edie

 Cheryl,

If you aren't doing any exercise, I think you're doing better than just good ... 4 lbs. in 3 weeks is great! My dietician told me to aim between 1 and 1 1/2lbs. per week as ideal weight loss. I am usually about 1 lb. or a little less. I did have the Easter binge so this past week was slower than I wanted. I do walk on the treadmill for 4-5 miles 4-5x weekly (average 20 miles per week, and it is inclined),other than that, I am pretty much sedentary. I work at home and either stand (in one place) or sit at a workbench. Other than the usual cooking, laundry, cleaning that's it for me. I checked my average caloric intake for the month of March and it is 1144 per day. I got an A- for the month (and I even counted Easter - 1700!).  I am usually very good. I start the day with Fiber One and skim milk. Then walk, after my walk I have a banana or some other piece of fruit and Emergen-C (to replace electrolytes). For lunch I have a salad of spinach, tomato, cuke and 2-3 oz. of whatever protein I had for dinner the night before(usually salmon, ahi tuna, or chicken breast) with a small amount of sesame-soy-ginger-dressing (sometimes I toss a few strawberries or ornage slices on it, too). I sometimes have 1/2 Luna bar for an afternoon snack, or some almonds or sunflower seeds (that afternoon snack is most of the calories for the day at that point). By dinner I have had about 400 -450 calories.  My biggest downfall is when I see that after dinner I have less than 1000 cal. then I try to justify it with ice cream or some other goodie. Bad, bad, bad...hopefully I can get over that someday.

Why does your hip hurt? Is it sciatica? I had that for a long time and it really does inhibit activity. As long as you're able to lose without exercising, you must be doing something right. Keep up the good work.

Welcome, lastditcheffort...there's always room for another! I understand how you feel about weighing more now than during pregnancy. I put on nearly 50 lbs. during my last pregnancy (15+ yrs. ago) and still weighed less than I did in Dec. '07.

I was able to lower my cholesterol w/o meds. I can email you some info if you're interested. I dropped 99 pts. off my total in 6 months with advice from a dietician that my endo sent me to.

Sorry I'm not much help in the HRT dept. but I am going to try the progesterone cream that Cheryl mentioned. The combo HRT meds that I've been on always make me start bleeding. I've never tried Climara.  What symptoms to do have when you go off the HRT?

Cheryl,

AH, That S. Principle diet wouldn't do it for me, either! I have to have my goodies, too. I am so good all day with my diet, then around 7:00 pm,I have to have a "treat". I love Ben and Jerry's coffee heath bar crunch (my biggest weakness). I am "allowing" myself a small bowl 1 or 2x weekly...so far, I'm still losing (though not as fast as I'd like to). You are doing so well...4 lbs. in 3 weeks is great! How many calories are you eating per day? Do you pay attention to the 40/30/30 (carb/protien/fat) percentages? What type of exercise do you do? I would love to be able to lose that much so quickly.

I quit the phentermine a week ago. I used it for 3 weeks, lost 4.6 lbs. while on it. I have been off for 1 week and lost almost 1# (the upside is that I can sleep). It's going to be a bit slower going but healthier.

Brigitte and Cheryl,

Thanks to you both, I am really interested in trying the progesterone cream.  I mentioned it to my Dr. on Tues and he said "let's work on one thing at a time" (meaning my weight, I guess). Do you know if it's available without a presciption? I am working on my Amazon order, again,  (I can never just order 1 book, so spend a lot of time when I do an order). I'm also going to try to get the Schwarzbein one. I did look at the website.   Both my parents are diabetic so it would be an interesting read for me.  My mom was put on a similar diet when she was first diagnosed. She was able to control her diabetes without meds (just diet and exercise) for 6-7 years...and she lost 40 lbs. when she started the diet/exercise program. She would come to my house and eat (I used to make a lot of desserts, before I turned into a cow), then she would walk upstairs, downstairs, making laps around the house until her sugar came back down.  I think I would have a hard time with such a restrictive diet.

Thanks for all the insight...you all have been an inspiration for me. There's still hopeSmile

Hi guys,

Sorry I've been MIA...hubby was on a business trip and all my female friends thought I must be lonely and banded together to keep me company. Unfortunately, I was looking forward to that time alone, but fortunately, I was very good with my diet and calorie count, and even lost another lb. Now, I am probably going to blow it this weekend. Everyone  (20 family members including parents, siblings, sons, d-i-l, nieces, nephew, and grandson) is coming to my house for dinner. Also, I made chocolates (nearly 20 lbs., but when I make them, I get overwhelmed by the smell and rarely crave it until a week or so later). So there is a ton of food here...not to mention candy for my grandsons basket.

Cheryl,  I am interested in learning more about the progesterone cream and estrogen dependency. I am going to order that book you recommended. I did a bit of reading online but am sure the book would be more informative. I'm not sure if my meno hit first or Hashimotos was first.

I have been on a couple different rounds of HRT (they were combo estrogen/progesterone in tablet form).  With all HRT's I had started bleeding and would stop within a week of stopping the meds. They helped with the hot flashes (complete absense of flashes, day and nightime), but I hated the bleeding...one episode lasted 7 weeks!. My endocrinologist tried putting me on a BP med to stop them. I took it for 3 weeks and decided that wasn't working and I didn't want to cause more "side-effects" from a medication I didn't need.  I am looking for a new endo, I really am disappointed in this guy. He came highly recommmended but I am planning to cancel my next appt with him. When I complained about weight gain to him, he told me I was eating too much (even after I showed him my food diary and the dietician approved my 1200 cal. per day), then he said that I should cut my caloric intake in half (what an idiot...600 cals??), then accused me of sleep walking and bingeing while I slept (and suggested we lock the bedroom door at night so I can't escape!).  I've got to find a new one.  I'm not sure if my meno hit first or my hashimotos was first. My periods stopped (before HRT)in July 2005 (I just turned 47). My Dr. did testing in Feb. '06 to get a bone density baseline (my mother has osteopenia and my grandmother had osteoporosis). I complained then of gaining weight. he told me that meno would give me about 10 lbs. I was excited since I had always been underweight. (I was 96 lbs. at age 44, 100 at 45). Well, that 10 lbs. came on so fast I couldn't believe it. So, I joined Curves. I was 115 (April '06). I was going 3-4x weekly and was continuing to gain weight. The ladies were all teasing me that I wasn't working hard enough or that I was pigging out at home.  I had gained another 10 lbs. by Aug.,was so tired and depressed all the time, so I quit going to Curves. My son is a personal trainer, so I talked to him about it. He recommended that I have blood work drawn to see if there was something else going on. That's when they discovered the Hashimotos. They put me on synthroid and said that the weight would "fall " off. They were wrong. I kept complaining about the weight, but was never satisfied with anything that Dr. did.  By Dec. '07, I was 148. I had given up a Dr. Pepper habit, nearly all bread, pasta, rice, cereals. I quit serving a starch for dinner. No desserts and I just kept getting larger. In Dec. my son got married and when I saw myself in those pictures I was disgusted, I had to do something. My ex is a massage therapist and practices ayurvedic healing. I have been a "project" for him for the last 18 months and he had all but given up on me. I talked to my PCP and he suggested that we try the phentermine for 1 month to see if we can "jump-start" my metabolism. he thinks that I may be all screwed up from the Hashimotos and this might do the trick. I am trying it...with some resistance. I go back this Tues. I think I will take the advice to see if I can get the tablets and cut the dosage if he wants me to continue for another month). It will be 3 weeks on Tues. that I started it.  I have to have a sono on my thyroid in April.  They found some "lumps". Ugh...it's always something (and it was never this way until meno!). I could go on forever about my health in the last 2 years...but it's improving and many of the problems have disappeared completely.

Valerie -  if you'd like to talk about your cholesterol, email me. I lowered my total 99 pts. in 6 months without meds (without affecting my HDL). I'd love to share the info with you.

I have been taking them in the morning about 8:00 -9:00. I deliberately skipped mine today because I was up most of the night again. At least I was able to get through the day without pigging out (so far).

Corky, what can you tell me about the natural progesterone cream? Have you had any side effects? How long have you been using it?

I know how you feel.  I've felt that way, too. We were in the Caribbean in early Jan. While I was there I felt so heavy. I carry my weight in my lower body and my legs were hurting and swelling.  I knew I needed to do something about the extra weight if just for my own health. I think my osteoporatic bones were getting stressed carrying all this baggage.

You're lucky that the phentermine doesn't affect your sleep. I can't seem to sit still. I'm taking 30 mg. what is your dosage?

Today is my1 month as a CC member. I have lost 7.2 lbs. (2.5 lbs since phentermine).  I  really hate to exercise but am motivated. I walk weekdays from 10:00 to 11:00 am.  I have never weighed this much in my life (not even during 3 pregnancies). 3 years ago I weighed 100. I put on about 10 lbs. as soon as menopause hit, then another 38 with Hashimotos.  My Dr. put me on the phentermine to "boost my metabolism". He only gave me a 1 month prescription and wants to check me before he'll refill.  It sure does make me thirsty. I measured my fluid intake the other day and it was 148 oz! I never drink that much.  Also,I was having a lot of trouble sleeping last week. I would close my eyes but they kept moving. I think I managed about 3 hrs per night for 4 days. It was making me crazy. It was so bad that I skipped my pill on Sat. just so I could catch up.  This week is much better. I actually slept 6 hrs. last night and I feel good this morning.  I am going to try taking it after breakfast and see how that works for me.

The bone density concerns are important. My Dr. ordered a Dexa scan 2 years ago (1 yr.after my periods had stopped). He wanted to get a baseline (my mother has osteopenia). When my results came back we were shocked. My hips were -3.4 (severe osteo). I have been on Actonel for 2 yrs.  I have grown almost 2", but I really think maybe I'm not slumped over anymore. I quit caffeinated drinks after I was diagnosed (caffeine depletes the calcium), and I joined Curves for weight bearing exercises. I quit Curves because I just kept putting on weight (and they made me feel embarrassed, saying I wasn't working hard enough, etc). I wasn't permitted to do any weight lifting, though.   My osteo has improved a lot. Got my most recent results last week. My back is now osteopenia, my hip is -2.6.

For the hot flashes...I just finished a hot flash study with Bayer(like the aspirin). I donated myself as a lab rat. If you'd like to know more about it let me know. The drug was FDA approved, they were testing to see how low a dose could be given with results. I've signed up for a new study in May, too.

Since I work at home I don't have contact with many people. I apologize if I get too chatty.

Is there room for one more here?  I am 49, and post menopausal for several years. I recently was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, too.  I work from home so am pretty inactive but I do work standing up most of the time.  I also walk on a treadmill 4 miles , 5x week. I was 5' for most of my adult life. 2 years ago I was put on Actonel and have grown nearly 2". I was 148# on 1/12/08. My Dr. put me on phentermine. I just started taking it, though. I was nervous about taking it but finally got brave enough last Tues. I have lost 2 1/2 lbs. since on it (1 week). My goal is to be 123 lbs. for my 50th b'day (July 1).

Oh...and I love chocolate!
