What are your goals?  If it's fat loss, drop the carbs.  I believe in bodybuilding they shoot for low carbs, and good fats.  Almonds, peanuts, olive oil = all good fats.

Lean protein: chicken, tuna

Good article on body transformations

I believe there are other articles on this site talking about eating carbs with lean protein, but not carbs and fat together.

All fats are not bad.

great article!

different hormones do different things to people's bodies. some people gain, some don't. on the nuvaring i gained a tiny bit and my chest grew. i just wasn't happy with a few things about it - now i'm looking at an iud. i also had to switch gynos because of the hassle mine was giving me... maybe you should do the same? go to one a friend recommends.

Fitness Pump class? Apr 23 2009

the instructors at my pump class usually ask if anyone is new so they can give direction before each portion/move. go easy on the weights at first, until you get used to it... and you can keep extra weight by your step as well. those classes are usually low weight with high repetitions.

those classes are really fun. i recommend them.

Fitness Workout question, (ok maybe dumb, but here goes) Apr 16 2009

i go on my lunch breaks.

i allow myself 15 minutes to get there and dressed, go to class or do the elliptical for 30 minutes, then allow 15 minutes to get cleaned up and get back.

my gym is about a 5 minute car ride. i wear a sweat band on my head to soak up what it can and use wet paper towels on my hair, face, pits, and other sweaty areas. i make sure to bring extra socks/underwear and have specific workout clothes (bra, shorts, shirt, etc). i also bring wet naps and deodorant.

i haven't had any complaints - my co-worker sometimes takes a quick rinse off shower and doesn't get her hair wet.

Weight Loss Too high of a deficit? Mar 16 2008
02:34 (UTC)

i can tell you that i was working out every day and hovering around 1200 cal. i had too high of a deficit and not losing anything. i upped my calories to 1400 and went to working out 4 days a week and started losing like crazy. really, i think most of the time it's just finding what you body feels comfortable with when letting go of fat/weight.

if this is a new diet for you and you've had some not so good habits beforehand - you're ok. most people lose a lot of weight after just starting a new diet and then it levels out to the closer you are to your goal.
Weight Loss Eating a lot and then not eating for long periods - bad for metabolism? Mar 08 2008

what you probably need to do is retrain your stomach and metabolism. give it a good 300 cal meal for breakfast lunch and dinner, and take snacks along with you. it's best to eat 5-6 times a day... although sometimes i eat 8 times! if you're on the go a lot, take things that are easy to eat like protein bars or the carrots or fruits (as you mentioned).
Weight Loss Eating a lot and then not eating for long periods - bad for metabolism? Mar 08 2008

all of this is being eaten in one sitting? it sounds like binge eating to me. your body is trying to tell you something by eating large amounts after it hasn't been getting enough fuel for a long period of time. to your body it's like being trapped on a deserted island and every 24 hours finding a hidden supply of food - of course it's going to gorge. this can actually make you gain weight because the metabolism slows from not eating and then it gets an overload of calories and fat in one sitting. then it struggles to digest properly.
Weight Loss Bride to be - Need to Lose 10 lbs Mar 06 2008
14:55 (UTC)
My wedding is in April and I've been working out like crazy! I started losing in Dec (yea I know I waited till the last minute), lost 20 lbs and would like to lose 15 more (although I don't know how possible that is in a month and a half). What I did was lower my calories and work out as much as I could during the week. I started off at 5 days a week switching day to day between cardio and muscle training. Now I'm doing 7 days a week because it's getting down to the wire. I found out before I joined this site in Feb, that I really wasn't eating enough. Right now I'm eating around 1400 cal a day and I'm 5'3" 135 lbs.

Hi,

I am new here and was checking out the different areas when I saw your question. Here is a formula that is used in my Get Real weight management class at the local YMCA.

1) Begin with a base of 655 calories

2) Multiply your weight in pounds by 4.3

3) Multiply your height in inches by 4.7

4) Add lines 1, 2 and 3

5) Multiply your age by 4.7

6) Subtract line 5 from line 4 (Equals Your Normal Resting Metabolic Rate)

7) Multiply line 6 by your activity factor (see below) - (Equals your daily maintenance calories)

RMR stands for Resting Metabolic Rate

Sedentary - Multiply your RMR by 1.2

Light Excerise - Multiply your RMR by 1.3 ( about 2-3 hours per week)

Moderate Excerise - Multiply your RMR by 1.4 (about 4-7 hours per week)

Heavy Excerise - Multiply your RMR by 1.5 (7 or more hours per week)

8) Subtract 250 - 500 calories (Equals your daily weight loss level) (How many calories that you would need to eat per day to lose weight)

You need to cut out 3500 calories per week (500 calories per day) to lose 1 pound per week. 3500 calories equals 1 pound.

I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all but we just went over this today in class. My teacher said to set it up at a goal of 10 pounds in 10 weeks and then recalculate the calorie intake again using the new weight for the next ten weeks. Once you reach your goal weight, just recalculate the intake minus step 8.

I hope this helps with anyone who would like to use this calculation. My teacher is also a personal trainer.

 YOU ROCK!

jndimaria--I know what you mean about having a high sugar intake. I absolutely am IN LOOOVE with fruit and eat TONS of it everyday----I mean..yesterday alone my sugar intake was 112 g.!! and I don't even EAT 1500 cals. a day!! see--I eat TONS of fruit which SERIOUSLY spikes my sugar intake!! But honestly--other than the fruit---i don't intake many refined sugars---so I don't worry about it...
-----just wanted you to know you're not alone- :)

I was at 112 today, ah. I ate an apple and banana, but I think ketchup and tarter sauce did me in this time.

I hate breakfast. Actually, the yogurt takes me like an hour to get down and most of the time when I'm having a snack, it's because I'm trying to get the calories and I'm not even hungry! Thanks for telling me that's what held you back - we had similar stats so I'm sure the things that work for you will probably work for me.

The yogurt I need because of the acidophilius (unless I want to start taking those expensive pills). Since I'm eating just about every hour I don't have big meals until I have dinner. I can definitely replace the special k bar and that's 9g, and the luna bar gives me the protein but has 12g of sugar. Also, I have a tuna and cracker pack that I keep in my desk... maybe if I switch that out with the luna bar?

I agree that there's times when I think I look good and then times when I think I look gross. I can't tell much of a difference but my clothes tell a different story. The thing that really told me I was doing great was when I took some older pictures and compared them to pictures now. I can tell in my face and stomach and whatever else. I've also been tracking my progress with measuring tape. I have a journal entry dedicated to my progress.

is 28g a reasonable goal? today I was at 65g, and when I took away the apple and the banana I was at 51g.

Weight Loss Multi-Vitamin Supplement Mar 05 2008
03:07 (UTC)

I've been told that pre-natals are extremely good for women even if you're not trying to get pregnant. Although, they're more expensive.

I used to take women's one a day and I liked it. The only thing I don't like about multi-vitamins is that they give you these really high values in certain vitamins and you body can only absorb so much... so really, the overkill just flows right out.

fruits are good for you so you should be able to eat as much as your little heart desires. I like the suggestion to cut out the fruits in your sugar intake.

I'm 5'3", 135 lbs. Been on this plateau for a month and a half or so. I was under eating for so long until I joined this site. So I got some pointers and ended up losing a lb since I started eating better (Feb 28th). I was eating under 1000... then I went up to 1200... right now I'm trying to maintain 1400. I'm working out for an hour each day.

I go to a fitting room and make sure that I can't pinch too much of the material and then bend over and make sure they don't fall out. yea, I'm the one in the dressing rooms bouncing around with a stack of bras on the chairs.

The first place I lost was my boobs. I went from a full C to a barely there B... and I still want to lose another 15 lbs! I'm scared!

Weight Loss How can breakfast help you lose weight? Mar 03 2008
23:44 (UTC)

I used to not eat breakfast and lose weight... not because I was forcing it, but because I'm not a morning person at all and my stomach would be pissy if I did eat something right away. I'm not sure why, but it worked. HOWEVER, I started bringing breakfast back and didn't gain much, if anything at all. I think it might just be certain people's reactions to food. I always think it's better to eat more fatty foods early in the day than later - then you have more time to burn it off and you're more active for longer.

I'm OBSESSED with sushi, therefore I LOVE white rice. I think it is good in moderation and I doubt I could even find brown rice at a sushi bar. I have used brown rice in stir fry and what not... it all tastes good to me.

I am going to go and research this hot and cold method. thanks!

eat a lot of small stuff every hour or two. i have troubles meeting my cal intake because i eat all day in small portions and i feel full all the time. of course, my portions may be different than what would keep someone else satisfied for an hour or two... but your stomach will shrink when there's not a huge amount of food in there all at once.
