Weight Loss How do you waitresses out there log your work? Oct 18 2009
18:58 (UTC)

I work full time as a server in a very large building. I walk in one big circle all night plus steps. We have to carry our own food and drinks plus everyone else who is current too busy to do it themselves.

I wear a step meter. I walk 7-11 miles a night. The burn meter will log 1000+ calories but it does not account for any lifting and all the heavy plates I carry, cleaning, etc.

I have no idea how many calories I burn. I will tell you that I am constantly hungry tho.

I just checked the activity log. It says you burn 136 calories per hour.

Every place I've ever worked microwaves pasta (morning prep cooks pasta half way-then microwaved when ordered)...even mom and pop homemade places. Most likely why it tastes like it does. Consumers want their food fast, ease of readiness, etc.

Quality dark Chocolate (2 pieces), Kozy Shack dark chocolate pudding (or NSA rice pudding). All of these are about 100 calories.

This is my latest find: Chobani strawberry or blueberry greek yogurt (140 calories). OMG!! No lie, like eating pie without the crust. AMAZING!!

Starbucks: gross, gross, gross coffee. Don't really know how anyone can drink it....unless you put tons of sugar in it, which I don't use. All the other stuff there is loaded with calories and/or very over-priced. Last time hubby and I were at Target, he got a Pumpkin something that cost over $4, for the medium size.

Subway: Can I have a veggie and bread sandwhich please. Where is the beef?? I need protien to keep me full so they simply don't cut it. And no, I am not paying for extra meat. They should put it on the sandwhich to begin with!!

Ruby Tuesdays: Use to have good food. Very disappointed last few times I went there.

Try meals based around pulses (legumes) such as lentils, chickpeas and beans.   All good sources of proteins and, of course, vegetarian.  You can also add the following.... eggs, nuts, seeds, tofu, quorn, quinoa grain, other wholegrain foods, dairy products.

Try to avoid protein shakes if you can.

Just wondering...what is wrong with protien shakes?? I drink a Myoplex shake, five days a week. I am a waitress and have to go HOURS without eating. I use the protein shake to hold me over until I have time to sit down and eat a real meal.

Foods The reality of eating "clean"... Oct 10 2009

I don't have anything to add as far as the sleeping but will tell you my experience.

You are eating carbs and sugar cause your body is looking for a source of quick energy. I went through 1 1/2 years when I only slept 3-4 hours a night, 3-4 days a week (work schedule). I had the EXACT issue. Found it nearly impossible to stay away from sugar and junk food. I developed a binge eating issue over that period of time and gained 10 pounds (even tho I am super active)

The above created a huge issue for me. The sugar/carbs made it hard for me to fall asleep. Processed foods (even something like a granola bar) and artificial sweeteners seem to effect me the same way.

I now am sleeping like a normal person. Most days I can sleep until I naturally wake up. Eating super clean and being able to sleep has cleared up my eating issue. When I get home, I nearly always fall right to sleep.

If you can slove your sleeping issue, I think you'll solve the eating issue....tho you will have to work on breaking your now formed habit. Eating clean may help the sleeping issue. Give it a try.

Nope, your mind is winning so stop letting it control you. You should be excited. Twenty pounds lost is wonderful. Change your thoughts and you will change your world.

I say these things to myself everyday. I love to exercise (it's fun), eating healthy makes me feel good, eating healthy is easy!! I am greatful to have a strong/healthy body that allows me to work, earn money, live a good life and be so happy. If you think your world is drudgery, it will be.

Think about all the people who do not have even the abilty to work out. Think of all the people who have more then 45 pounds to lose. Are you lucky?? You are.

If you need to talk a break from counting calories, then do it. You should know by now about what you should eat. If you need to break from the gym, then do it...enjoy the fall season and walk outside instead.

Most important is to stop all this negative crap going on in your head!! You can do it, you really can.

Weight Loss Addicted to almonds Oct 09 2009

Same here....addicted to almonds and peanut butter. Peanut butter has been bansihed from the house!! For the almonds, I now buy the 100 calorie packs. Can not have the entire can/package around. I eat two 100 calorie packs a day and then I am DONE, no more. This has been working well for me :) Certainly more expensive but, o well, it's working.

There is something about "the binge" and carbs. SO many people will binge on carbs, including my former self (a recovered binger). Cereal, even healthy cereal is bad, bad, bad news at night. There is something about it that just makes you want to keep eating it. If you don't burn off those carbs (night-go to bed) they will turn right into fat on ones *ss.

I best tips: Never eat carbs alone, always with protien. Try not to eat carbs at night. If you are truely hungry, reach for protein instead (string cheese is an excellent choice or one 100 calorie pack of almonds). Drink water.

Weight Loss High protein on a budget Oct 08 2009

I try to eat to one gram of protein per my weight every day.

Buy the club packs of chicken breast at your market (freeze part of it if need). Cheapest way to go.

Protein in chicken can be different unless you buy the portion packages, those they are very expensive. When I weigh my ckn, the protein content can be up to 58 grams. Depends on how big the breast is. In club packs, they are never sized the same.

Eggbeaters are expensive but worth the money in my opinion. I eat a four egg omelet w/veggies & candian bacon every morning. This is a filling 28 grams of protein to start my day.

I agree with fidget. If I eat, say a piece of cake, I look preggo the next day.

I do try to limit my carb intake. When I do eat carbs, I balance them with plenty of protein so there is no spike in insulin. I do my best to NEVER eat carbs alone. I also try to never eat carbs late at night, unless I am working and am going to burn them off before bed.

My experiance with binge eating is that your diet is out of balance OR you are not taking in enough calories. If you are spending 3 hours at the gym, the lack of calories might be the cause.

I, too, weighed 105 pounds and now am 120 as well...thanks to 1 1/2 years of binge eating. It took me a long time to figure out why I binge ate. For me, the out of balance diet and the lack of calories were both the cause.

I have come to terms with my 120 weight. Yes, I would like to get some pounds off. I also do not like the look of flappy fat on my body either. I have started to work out again, try to eat healthy (but do not deprive myself of treats) and most important...eat enough calories for my activity level. I typically burn about 3000 calories a day.

Maybe it is also possible that your body is not able to handle a veggie diet. I know my body needs a lot of protein. I think I'd binge on a veggie diet. Just a thought.

I just stopped doing treadmill workouts just for that reason. Just makes me WAY too hungry. I only burn 150-190 calories in a half hour workout but am starving for the rest of the day.

I already walk 7-10 miles a night at work, which burns 700-1000 calories without counting lifting and carrying. I also burn 700 with my barn work and riding.

I can do the above, eat 1500-1600 calories and feel satisfied. Add that treadmill and I am starved.

No advice, just know what you are going through. For me, my lifestyle already burns mass calories without added exercise.

I am extemely sensitive to carbs and blood sugar spikes/hunger from them. When I do eat carbs, it is always balanced with a source of protein and fat. My carbs ratio is usually only at 20% of my daily diet.

You're wrong, ladies..

If you eat too much to burn at once and your body can't store all the food as fat, it just won't be digested. Well.. it may sound disgusting.. but have you ever ate more than 4000 kcal a day and looked what's on the toilet then..? Don't try it, I can tell you - undigested food..

From personal experiance I can tell you this is wrong, or at least for my body. I have had a day of binge eating where I consumed around 10,000 calories. It stayed on my body as two pounds, which would be pretty correct as my burn is usually between 2500 and 3000 calories a day.

Also, the toilet was no different the next day either....unless I consumed say a whole container of nuts. That was never a nice morning after.

I do agree that calories are not cut and dry. I've lost pounds quickly but just reducing carbs and cutting out sugar on the same calorie numbers.

Agree with goingblue. Try a lot of low GI foods.

"Lots and lots of egg beaters and vegetables!" Me too. I eat a 4 egg-beater omlet every morning for breakfast w/protein and veggies. My hubby says that should make those beaters in the gallon size just for me :)

Weight Loss Being bad in the Evenings - any suggestions? Apr 21 2009

I've read a lot of studies lately that suggest that you SHOULD eat (healthy snack) before bed. Your body be deprived of food all the hours that you are asleep.

I can not sleep if I am overly hungry before I go to bed. A string cheese (around 80 calories) is usually enough to fill me up so I can sleep.

Health & Support Bingers! Why can't you just stop?!?! Apr 17 2009
15:49 (UTC)

I think they are many, many reasons why people binge. I agree with spoiled candy (good advise). Not eating enough or a balanced diet. I recently discovered that I can burn over 3000 calories with my life schedule. Yet, for the last year, I've been trying to stick to a 1500 calories diet and developed a binge issue. Wonder why?? Now I am keeping a food journal AND a activity journal to make sure I eat enough. I've developed a very bad relationship with food.

Also, I think there is a body reaction to food. Most people will binge on carbs or sugar. I've recently read that your brain gets hooked on the chemical sugar surge just like with any other drug or "high". That will just leave you wanting more and more and more. This is also my issue. I try not to eat carbs or sugar unless it is paired with plenty of protein. That way, my insulin levels will stay stable.

Weight Loss Do you eat to your burn meter?? Apr 08 2009
09:23 (UTC)

Yes, Crissy, exactly. On the days I burn close to 3000, I would eat at least, 2000. On my days off, I am basically a bum. Don't do much at all cause I am usually too tired. This week, on my day off, I ate 1400 calories. My burn meter read 1640. I just don't find that I can stick to a steady X amount of calories. If I'm really active, I'm very hungry. If I am not, then I am not hungry at all. Bigger deficit on my active days and at least a small deficit on my off days.

My goal is to lose about 1 pound a week. I'd like to lose 7-10 pounds before the hot summer and short season.

Will eating a varied calories intake also keep my metabolism kicking?? Never getting used to one set amount??

Did you know once you have raised your blood sugar your body is incapable of burning fat for hours due to the fact that by eating sugar, you triggered the release of a truckload of insulin into your system, and insulin facilitates fat storage, not fat burning

Cravings and the need to eat more will also follow the insulin spike.

I gave up sweet foods (including fake, SF foods) 12 days ago. Not only have the cravings stopped but I am also eating less and getting full faster. I do think that I was addicted to the "sugar rush". Moderation will never work for me.

Buy all natural peanut butter. It tastes better and it is better for you. I like Nature's Promise. It is more expensive tho.

Peanut Butter will always get a low grade on the CC. I guess it is because it is high in fat & calories. My natural pb gets the same grade as your Skippy does.

I think with people like us, it does. I constantly have to watch my carbs and my sugar grams, that is the only way I can control my weight. I am also learning that I have to keep processed foods to a minimum, eat really clean.

I'll eat some carbs at breakfast and lunch, combined with protien. After that, besides carbs like veggies, I don't eat any. This also keeps my cravings to a minumum as well. Good luck.

I just tried to use the burn meter. I have my account set at sedentary. Then I added my 1312 for my shift tonight into as exercise. It says my burn is 2270. Is this more of a correct way to understand the calories that I need??

Cosmographer, thanks for your help. Your calorie calculations were about right on. I'll try using the burn meter for my daily activity and see if I can get my body more happy about the amount that I eat. I need to find the amount that is enough without getting overly hungry.
