Health & Support I'm not anorexic, the therapist said. Nov 27 2008

I think part of the diagnostic criteria for Anorexia is a BMI of under 17.5 so it is sort of understandable that your doctor didn't want to immediately diagnose you with an eating disorder. However, just because a person's weight is OK doesn't mean that they are mentally healthy and I wish that more people understood this. EDNOS is an eating disorder you might want to research.

For you (and others around you) to even be questioning your health is a sign that there is something wrong. You know yourself better than anyone else, and if YOU think that you have a problem of any kind then the best thing you can do is go out of your way to get the help that you need to recover. If this means seeing a different therapist, I think you should do it.

Don't let this discourage you from recovery. Being told you're "not underweight enough to have an eating disorder" is such a potentially damaging thing, that could trigger you to become more unwell just to attain a diagnosis. Don't fall into this trap. You've already made a huge positive step by realizing you have a problem, and now you need to do everything you can to get healthy.

Good luck xxx Message me any time if you need support, I'll be happy to try and help you.

you are not eating enough.

*EDIT* i just read that you have injured yourself? is there any way that you could manage to work in more foods that you could eat? liquids, soups, smoothies, nut butters etc.. under-eating like this is very unhealthy and damaging.

Weight Gain How to gain weight? Nov 26 2008

You can put creamy sauces on pasta like carbonara, or you could use pesto which is oil based so has lots of calories in, and also put cheese on top..

If you have no appetite, you need to find ways of packing in LOTS of calories at the times when you DO feel you can eat.

If you are getting a bit bored of nuts you could swap them for nut butters for a bit of variation.

Have you looked at the high cal food list? I'm sure there's lots of ideas on there that you could fill your meals with :)

Missing dinner really doesn't sound like a good idea though. If you're too tired, could you ask someone else to prepare a meal for you (such as your mum)? Something small with dense calories might be better if you have no appetite and are too tired to eat.

I hope you find out what's wrong soon and get better xxx

Health & Support waking up hungry at night Nov 25 2008
19:23 (UTC)

I usually eat a bowl of porridge at about 9pm and go to bed at 10pm. for the last few nights ive been going to bed at 11pm though trying to make myself more tired to sleep. i haven't woken up at all the past couple of nights and not ravenous in the morning either so im taking this as a good sign?

i've put a pack of 30 calorie rice crackers in my room for if i wake up feeling really hungry again but i haven't had to eat any yet ! i dont think i'll get any nasty night time eating habits from rice crackers since they just taste of nothingness?

thanks for the replies x

You know what's awesome on pancakes? I mean as in crepe typethin pancakes, English pancakes, not Scotch ones ( the thicker, bulkier ones) NUTELLA!

Or even better, lemon juice and REAL brown sugar.
Or maple syrup is meant to be good, but I've never tried it :/

umm YUM! ice cream is also really nice on crepe style pancakes, with squirty chocolate sauce.

i bet PB and banana is nice too although ive never tried it.. mmmmm

I posted a thread about hypoglycemia a little while ago, there might be some useful information on there for you to look at.

http://caloriecount.about.com/anyone-hypogylc emia-ft119905

I'd also recommend looking at hypoglycemia.org which has lots of information and a quiz that you can do based on the symptoms. If you think you have it, go and see your Dr. and tell them how you've been feeling etc..

I went to my Dr. and took a print out of my results from the quiz, that way she could see all my symptoms clearly. Good luck!

i've always wanted to be an author and i always always will. (when i was really young, my parents got me and my brother a hamster each for christmas, and we have a video of me playing with them, sounding REALLY distraught and saying "i want to write about the hamsters but i don't know how to write:(" hahaha!! to which  my mum replies "they'll teach you all that at school..." how funny)

anyway, i'd also LOVE to work on a magazine, with art or in fashion retail.

this thread is so inspirational. i have really bizarre eating habits... and id really like to get rid of them!! i eat very little throughout the day but eat a LOT at night! any suggestions on how to overcome this habit? im worried ill still binge at night even if i eat normally thorughout the day!

i used to do the exact same thing. eat more throughout the day and in a week or so your should stop feeling so hungry in the evenings. i know it's scary at first but it really does work. try and distract yourself in the evenings for the first few days or so, just in case you want to eat more than you should because you've like 'conditioned' yourself to want to eat at night. you could try planning your meals the day before too, so you can spread your calories out fairly evenly throughout the day. good luck!!

Oh, and to those of you discussing Bear Grylls, I just gotta say, that Les Stroud (his show is called Survivorman) is soooo much cooler... in my opinion. Bear has a whole crew with him all the time, that give him bottled water and snacks, and sometimes he even stays overnight in hotels!! He's such a cheater. Les is all on his own, doing his own camera work for a whole week in the wilderness. Now that's impressive :] And the way Bear talks totally cracks me up, he always sounds so intense!

I've never seen that but I'm going to look out for it.. I didn't know Bear cheated :(! How disapointing.. One thing I find hilarious about Born Survivor is when he's struggling to climb up a cliff or some rocks or something saying really intensely, "This is some of the harshest terrain in the WORLD, one wrong move, and I could easily plummet to my death.." etc. etc. etc..... and the camera man is just shimmering up after him with apparent ease... hahah! love it!

girlfighting - i guess he is a chef .. he did cook SOME of the snake after all.. ahaha

On another note... I used to love Jamie Oliver back when he was The Naked Chef but recently I'm not feeling the same warmth... :( His recent series Ministry of Food was kind of a random concept.

Still like him though, my Dad uses his recipes a lot.

Nigella Lawson is my favourite tv chef!! I named my hamster after her haha.

Ina Garten's show Barefoot Contessa makes me laugh, every recipe seems to be built upon multiple sticks of butter.

And I love Gordon Ramsey!!

Lalabanana - (I'm directing this to you because I know you're from the UK..) He's not a chef or anything but do you ever watch Bear Grylls Born Survivor?? He is soo hilarious! Like wandering around in the desert trying to survive, in one episode he killed a snake, clean ripped it's head off, and then bit straight into it :| Totally raw... That was undoubtedly my favourite TV moment of 2008.

if i were you i wouldn't resort to pills just yet (although it is your decision, im just giving my opinion :]).. 2,000 calories sounds good, your BMI is in the healthy range, and it sounds like you are sensible with your diet. do you take a multivitamin? that might be a good idea, just in case you were missing out on anything. it sounds like you're doing everything right though. IMO i think if you give your body a bit more time to heal, things should get back to normal. good luck! x

Young Calorie Counters What do the people at YOUR lunch table eat? Nov 19 2008

the people i was with at college would all just go to nandos or pizza hut or mcdonalds and eat loads of junk! all athletic though. then i started going to lunch with different people and they'd typically just get sandwiches/baguettes, a chocolate bar and a coke.

the skinniest guy i used to go to lunch with (really tall, really thin and lanky) used to eat microwavable burgers or BBQ sauce sandwiches for breakfast, and then hotdogs or burger king for lunch. haha gross.

hello :) i am your height and weight, i used to be about 97lbs. i didn't have my periods for about 16 months, but they came back at my current weight - however it wasn't instant.. took about 3-4 months maintaining this weight before they came back.

my advice is to just keep eating enough, don't lose any weight and you should find your periods will be back in a few months. but make sure you keep your doctor updated.

Weight Loss Recommended values of diet Nov 14 2008

Different sources will reccomend different amounts but I think the most common break down is 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat. Or 50% carbs, 25% protein, 25% fat.

1g fat = 9 calories

1g carbohydrate = 4 calories

1g protein = 4 calories.

Health & Support anyone have hypogylcemia? Nov 07 2008

Original Post by masquerademask:

It's also linked to hypothyroidism.

This is very interesting because I looked up hypothyroidism on Wikipedia and it said that it can originate from three organs - thyroid gland, pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. From the hypothalamus it "Results when the hypothalamus fails to produce sufficient thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)." This time last year the DR told me that my hypothalamus had stopped functioning due to undereating/being underweight, I'm thinking this could all be connected!

How would it make you feel if you did?

Do you have to stop eating sugar completely? E.g. could you eat a yogurt that had say 10g of sugar in?

im also thinking i might go as Daphne from scooby doo.. my hair is naturally ginger (died in my display pics lol) so i'd just need the purple dress and boots. also thought of wilma flinstone but i think the dress for that is going to be a tad tricky.

anyway all these ideas have made the list. thanks so much lovelies :) X X X X X

i can't help you stop because ive done the exact same thing the past two days. but try not to feel too depressed - i know it's hard, i always feel terrible on days i overeat, but if you can, TRY and do something to distract yourself. maybe even do a little exercise, watch a good movie, get out the house, call a friend, whatever you can think of just to take your mind off things and try and feel a little brighter. it's done now, start fresh from this moment, and try and feel positive rather than dwelling on things. :)

when i was trying to gain weight i found doing little things like eating higher calorie bread, more potatoes, butter, olive oil etc all added up over time and they don't make you feel too gross and full. & dip your bananas in peanut butter :) sooo good. i dont know much about weight lifting etc but i think if you want to gain muscle it's good to eat loads of protein? (that might be totally wrong :|) good luckkk xx
