I'll be in for 8 days for GRS. What bugs me most is going to be the enforced idleness as I won't be able to do much for quite a while afterwards.

I'll throw my weight behind the Le Creuset recommendations. Whether you get Le Creuset or no cast iron is what you want.

I never log housework unless it is a running around all day thing then I'll log it as one of the "implied walking" activities. these come in at around 200cal/hr.

As mentioned a scale is your best bet. However, logging your calories is always a best guess, and weight will always trump volume for accuracy.

Ok. So I tried some unilateral work. It was significantly harder work than I expected. I suspect because I was having to be far more aware of form and avoiding collapsing my left shoulder and twisting my spine.

A bike is very worth buying. What you will find is that you will use your muscles differently to walking so expect the first few weeks to be fairly tiring.

The new ones rather than having a moulded plastic case have a machined aluminium one. They are very much more "green" than the old ones and that always adds cost.

Also it's using DDR3 RAM rather than the more common DDR2, which will also add significantly to the cost.

I'd expect the prices to drop over the next 6 months or so, TBH.

My older sister is a 36C, younger is a 34AA. I have the annoyance of being a 38A.

There used to be so few nice (although it is getting better) bras in my size, which I hate more than my boob size...

At 6' on a treadmill I'll quite happily toddle along at 5mph on a 3% gradient.

When it comes to running on one. I use a builtin 5k training programme that varies the angle from 0 to 2.9%, and I'll run that in about 28mins (about 6.7mph).

4 months ago I'd have laughed at you if you'd suggested that I'd be running 5k on the treadmill. I'd in the past kept myself fit with weights and cycling, but running *ick*.  Now I thoroughly enjoy it. Laughing

Yes. Although not as extreme as yourself.  Before I lost 90lbs it was 65ish now first thing in the morning when I wake up mine is around 42-45.

Over the last few months I've pushed myself quite hard at the gym and pool but the resting HR hasn't changed. During a hard workout I can get close to my estimated maximum of 172 - I've seen 170 occasionally.

ETA: I recently had an ECG and that was perfectly ok.

I'm on Cipralex (Lexapro IIRC), and have been for 9 months now. I certainly haven't  had any issues with eating or weight whilst on it. I do thnk that I initially lost a bit of an edge, but I certainly feel better off with it than without.

Health & Support Heart Rate Oct 04 2008
08:55 (UTC)

Just to throw in a little more information.

I'm 48, 6ft, 180lbs and my RHR is around 44. I have recently had an ECG and that came up clean.  I wouldn't class myself as athletic as there were a good few years when I did no specific fitness training, and was badly overweight (I've lost 84lbs over the last couple of years).

When working out I can quite happily run 5km in 28m30s over a slightly hlly programme on the treadmill. During this my HR will go up to 158 (88%), and I have seen it peak at 170 before, without discomfort or feeling stressed in anyway.

My doc is not concerned in the least with my HR, except for when it dipped below 40. MY BP and HR are checked by him monthly when I go to collect my script for oestradiol.

How young do you think I and Tgpish are anyway :)

The basics for fat loss is in your diet:

 Diet+exercise=reasonable results

Exercise without dietary intervention = poor to embarrassing results

Once the dietary intervention is taken care of - and I assume that's why you're here - the anaerobic intensity of your workout and proper strength training counts for more for your daily energy balance - and since your RMR accounts for about 70% of your daily energy expenditure, activities which maintain or increase RMR should be given preference over activities which don't.

Activities which stimulate EPOC also stimulate a more general increase in RMR - untrained muscle burns about 5.7kcal/day, trained muscle burns about 7.2-7.8kcal/day, and EPOC is a direct increase in fat oxidation, so activities which promote a higher EPOC also promote a higher rate of fat oxidation in general.

As for the rep ranges - the ACSM have some guidelines.

And the point of proper, heavy strength training is to preserve muscle mass and resting metabolism during a diet. When you consider that women lose more muscle mass and experience a higher drop in RMR than men do while dieting*, you'll see why I think that strength training is especially crucial for women.

(* Kramer, Volek et al. Influence of exercise training on physiological and performance changes with weight loss in men. Hunter et.al. : Resistance Training Conserves Fat-free Mass and Resting Energy Expenditure Following Weight Loss.)

If your profile is correct you at least the better part of 12 years younger than I. As for tgpish, that is a red herring - the debate is with you. So, yes I was first in a gym before you were barely out of nappies.

In my case RMR usually accounts for about 55-60% of my daily energy expenditure. That is probably more extreme than most here.

I agree that resistance training is important. I do disagree with your assertion that it has to be heavy. If you have read the article I pointed you at, the level to with EPOC is boosted beyond the exercise period is very hotly disputed in research circles. So, that remains unproven.

The Pink Dumbell stuff hadn't even been put forwards when I first walked into a gym all those years ago when you were barely out of nappies. So, yeah, I'll stick with what was defined as light from all those years ago.

One of your links bases it's claims on a single journal article, I'd like you to think on this quote from a more recent article:

"the earlier research optimism regarding an important role for the EPOC in weight loss is generally unfounded. This is further reinforced by acknowledging that the exercise stimuli required to promote a prolonged EPOC are unlikely to be tolerated by non-athletic individuals. The role of exercise in the maintenance of body mass is therefore predominantly mediated via the cumulative effect of the energy expenditure during the actual exercise. "

Edit: correct a couple of typo

Neither do I want to start a fight, but what has worked for me is what has worked, and that is light (a weight I can easily do 12+ reps per set) and multiple sets (at least 4).

I do not feel at all comfortable moving weights around the 8 reps per set level. Indeed that causes (for me) muscle burn, and that way according to a physiology lecturer lies muscle damage.

Dieting women need strength training to retain muscle - even more than men do. Light weights/high reps is an insuficcient metabolic stimulus and will not help you.

I'm going to disagree with you. I've been doing nothing but light weight/high reps and have tremendously improved in strength and stamina.

If I've been working out I'll sometimes have pizza.

What's a 1000cal of pizza compared to 1400cals of workout? A 400cal deficit is what. :)

In moderation it's not so bad. Yes pre-built ones can be high in sodium, but then that's true for any convenience food.

I no longer fuss over what I eat, as my BP is ok for a 48yo (120/68), my cholesterol level is normal.

Weight Loss Has anybody lost 50 or more pounds WITHOUT exercise? Sep 09 2008
19:22 (UTC)

Yes. When I sorted myself out I lost nearly 70lbs without changing anything other than diet. It is only in the last 4 months that I've become far more active as my body image improves.

I'm not going to go into details as to what I did (and why I did it) to sort myself out, but dietarily what changed for me was that I stopped using alcohol as a psychological crutch. Cutting out the booze had a knock on effect in that my appetite reduced as well. A win-win situation.

I'm 6' and started at 266lbs and am now at 182lbs.

Fitness Cardio everyday.. Sep 09 2008
19:02 (UTC)

I have been doing until recently roughly (excluding cool down):
12.5 min (running 8min20 per mile average) treadmill
18min elliptical
8min bike
with weight/strength work mixed in. Total calorie burn would be about 670 including the weights.

I found that I can do this with a day off a week. However, since I added in a swim (500metres minimum) after the gym workout that I've had to reduce from 6 to 5 days in a row. Also if a workout feels like a struggle I will always do a lighter workout and take the following day off.

Like for instance today was a struggle so I won't workout tomorrow, but will on Thursday.

Most important is listen to your body and adapt your schedule to suit.

calories 1500-2200

I try to get to the gym most days, and tend to burn off around 650cals on the CV machines. I also walk wherever it is practical, including when I'm out doing the shopping. I've also started swimming again and generally swim 500m, sometimes more, after a work out in the gym. This soon mounts up in a day, and often exceeds 1200cals expended.

The most important thing though is to be sensible in your goals.

Weight Loss Eating out Aug 29 2008

I don't eat out often, but usually manage to resonable eyeball of the portion size. I can then make a reasonable guesstimate of calorie intake based on similar dishes online.

I don't fret overly if I get it wrong as, for me, putting the odd lb back on is no big deal (I've lost 90lbs) as it lost reasonably quickly again.
