Cold cereal, oatmeal or museli? Oatmeal made with almond milk, cinnamon, and blueberries, or Fiber One with soy milk, cinnamon, and fresh berries :) Kale, collard greens or Swiss chard? Never tried any of them, but I bet I'd love them all. Soy milk, almond milk or oat milk? I looove the first two, but I don't think I've ever even heard of oat milk before... Favorite way to cook veggies? Steamed or stir-fried (without oil) Favorite fruit for breakfast? Apples! I don't hate an occasional banana with peanut butter, either. Favorite fruit for snack? Apples, pears (before they soften), grapes, cherries Best way to eat carrots? Raw or steamed. Mmm. Whole grains are best in: bread, pasta or baked goods? I mean, they're all great, but I guess whole wheat bread (especially with nuts or flax or something crunchy) wins my heart in the end. Favorite healthy dessert? Nothing beats fresh fruit. Yogurt-and-frozen-fruit smoothies popped in the freezer for a bit and eaten with a spoon are also pretty wonderful. Favorite nut butter? I haven't been too adventurous in this area, but natural peanut butter is one of the loves of my life. Luna Bars, LaraBars or Think Bars? I haven't had a Luna Bar in years... Black beans, kidney beans or garbanzo beans? I don't care, I love ALL beans. Black, spice or green tea? Green tea or vanilla chai. How do you take your tea? Plain or with a little soy milk. Local or organic from store? Local. Mmm. Organic just tends to wreak havoc on my wallet when I go overboard. Favorite farmer's market item? Can you believe I've never been to one? Lots of orchards nearby, though, and I buy all my produce there when I can. Favorite combinations for trail mix? As long as there's some combination of peanuts, almonds, and cashews involved, I'm all set. Favorite dried fruit? Cherries, pineapple, mango, bananas Baked potato or baked yam? Baked sweet potato, hands down. Favorite way to eat dark chocolate? Plain and slowwwwwly. Or covering almonds, raisins, or espresso beans. :D |

The closest Trader Joe's is at least 40 minutes away, so I don't go too often, but when I do I always have to get:
Like crack! All of them! The nut mixes with the dried ginger are pretty great too. |

Gah! This breaks my heart... I personally love it. The brand really does make all the difference, though. I tried Hood with no salt added and gagged after the first spoonful, but I could probably go through at least 2 tubs of the Friendship brand a week. Add a little cinnamon or some diced pineapple and you are more than good to go :) |

| Foods | poll: apples or bananas? | Jun 05 2008 00:35 (UTC) |

Wow, toughie! I love them both to pieces, but I love a good crunch, so I think apple might win for me. It's funny though, one of my friends gags at even the thought of bananas. I forgot once when I was eating one on the way to her house, and when I brought the peel in with me to throw out, her family freaked out and made me seal it in a ziploc back and throw it out outside. Their loss! |

| Foods | Natural Peanut Butter vs. Commercially Prepared | Jun 05 2008 00:20 (UTC) |

Do it! Natural, no-salt-added peanut butter is probably my favorite food ever, but it did take some getting used to in the beginning... Now, though, I can't eat "normal" peanut butter without feeling like I'm eating some kind of salty peanut frosting. I started off with Smuckers, but switched over to some cheaper no-name brand and it tastes the same, if not better. And about the oil, I just stir it right in. I've heard that pouring it out has pretty negligible effects on calories, and if you keep the jar in the fridge to keep the oils stirred-in, I've found that it keeps a "drier" consistency. Aw man, I'm craving some now! Time to hit up the pantry. Happy PB-ing :D |

| Weight Gain | What are the advantages of exercising along with alot of gaining? | Mar 16 2008 23:31 (UTC) |
3 |
Hi! I'm definitely no expert on this, but I personally am working on gaining a few pounds and have had to cut down drastically on my (cardio) exercise to get results. The important thing right now is getting to a healthy weight again! I figure there'll be plenty of time to exercise later. Still, it might be a good idea to try to put on some of the weight in muscle. While gaining, you're going to really want to cut down on the cardio (which will work mostly on muscle endurance rather than growth and can really hinder your gaining) and focus on resistance/strength training maybe 3-4 times a week. Focus on anaerobic rather than aerobic! I'd check out the Beginner's Corner on the Exercise page on this site for ideas. Hope that helped a little! Good luck! :) |

Shredded Wheat with a little cinnamon and some berries sprinkled on top and Kashi Heart to Heart (also fantastic with berries) are my all-time favorites with 5g fiber per serving. You're probably looking for more than that, but like others have said, you can mix your high-fiber cereals in with another. Also, maybe this will help: http://www.cnn.com/FOOD/resources/food.for.th ought/grains/cereal/compare.dry.fiber.html |

I am a peanut butter addict! Has anyone heard of Peanut Butter & Co's Dark Chocolate Dreams? It's probably the BEST peanut butter I've ever tasted; all natural, 170 cal for 2 tbsp, and tastes like you're eating some kind of gourmet dessert. (I sound like I'm getting paid for this...) Anyway, I'll eat peanut butter on anything, but my favorite things are: Vanilla frozen yogurt, pretzel sticks, stir fry, toasted whole wheat english muffin or bread with some raspberry jam, banana slices, graham crackers, and Town House crackers. And my fingers, obviously. When I was little, though, I used to dip peanuts in it. Geez. Anyone else make the switch over to natural and kind of turned off by "normal" peanut butter now? |

Oh man, I've been so excited for this dinner all week! Breakfast: Same bowl of Kashi with huge strawberry and blueberries (I'll probably be eating that till I run out of the fruit :D), hard-boiled egg white, small bowl of strawberry yogurt with sliced almonds, french vanilla coffee. Lunch: Baby spinach salad with mandarin oranges, baby corn, black beans, sunflower seeds, feta, and orange poppyseed dressing, half a pita sandwich with roasted red pepper hummus. So 2 rolls of my own sushi with celery, avocado, and cucumber strips, and 2 fortune cookies with adorable fortunes. So much fun! Snack: When I'm less stuffed, I have a serious craving for some kettle corn. |

Yeah, you can stop drinking, but that's not always realistic when you're in college and it's something you do to have fun with your friends. I've had the same problem before, just munching away at whatever food is in sight, knowing I'll feel guilty later, and then being pissed at myself in the morning. What I've learned to do is really try to tell myself how not-worth-it it is to eat junk right then and get it out of my sight. I've realized that sometimes I just like to be chewing on something, so I try to carry around a better alternative to pizza and chips or whatever in my purse (Goldfish, almonds, an apple, etc.). Of course it doesn't work all the time, but you just need to learn to let yourself mess up sometimes. Once in a while isn't going to screw you up completely unless it becomes a habit. |

Wow, all the pictures on caitling's link look so, so yummy! Time to revive this thread :D My absolute favorite is allrecipes.com--kind of like recipezaar, but I find it a lot easier to navigate. You can search for specific ingredients and different "collections" (including low-calorie, low-fat, gluten-free, and also holidays/ethnic foods etc.). Follow the ratings! People know their stuff. |

Well, that doesn't sound like a very healthy diet! Your body needs nutrients to function and stay healthy, and 600 calories of food just can't do that. You can take thousands of calories daily and still not get the nutrients you need if you're not eating the right things. What do you drink? If you cut out high-sugar and high-fat drinks like sodas, cappuccinos, etc., you'll have much more leeway with the leftover calories to get an acceptable balance of carbs, proteins, and healthy fats. Water may take some getting used to, but it's sooo much better for you than other choices. You can make tea or use crystal light to switch things up. Even fruit smoothies made with just fresh or frozen fruits and yogurt are tasty and nutritious. Give those a try and try to fill your meals with more substance--fruits, veggies, lean meats, beans, nuts, etc. |

Oh wow, this is going to be pretty disgusting, but here goes! Breakfast: Toasted sesame bagel loaded with cream cheese, breakfast sausages drenched in maple syrup, strawberries with whipped cream, and a hazelnut cappuccino. Snack: Honey roasted peanuts and cashews, white chocolate-covered pretzels, and a Snickers ice cream bar. Lunch: A huuuge platter of sushi, yakisoba, sesame chicken, and blueberry bubble tea. Or maybe a huge buffalo chicken wrap with bleu cheese dressing with a side of spicy curly fries and a thick vanilla milkshake. Snack: Fried mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce and some nachos with extra olives and sour cream. Dinner: Barbecued ribs drenched in sauce, with really creamy, garlicky mashed potatoes. Or a chicken chimichanga with all the fixings. Dessert: Hot cherry pie with vanilla ice cream or a thick slice of pumpkin cheesecake. Post-dessert snacks: Cooler Ranch Doritos, chocolate coconut clusters, and one of those big, buttery mall pretzels dipped in melted cheese. Drooool. |

Super late breakfast (nothing like sleeping in on Saturdays :D): Banana, apple, 2 hard boiled eggs. Lunch: Toasted whole wheat pita filled with hummus, sprouts, tomato, cucumber, and grilled chicken breast, along with a heaping side of steamed veggies. Snack: Big bag of raw veggies (grape tomatoes, carrots, broccoli), mug of hot chocolate. Those don't quite go together, but oh well! Dinner: Too early, but my dining hall is making Thai chicken wraps with peanut sauce, and I'm more than a little excited about that haha. I'll probably throw in some brown rice and steamed veggies with that. Later: Wellll, it's Saturday, and in college that means some serious splurging :) |
