| Foods | What is your favorite healthy/ low-cal dessert? | Nov 20 2009 20:48 (UTC) |

I love frozen berries with unsweetened soymilk, it turns into a slushy ice cream like dessert, very cold and creamy, sweet and satisfying, and all very healthy fiber-- low cal, natural, healthy calories. No other dessert can beat this for me! |

| The Lounge | Favorite Chocolate? | Aug 08 2009 22:21 (UTC) |

I've come here to sing the praises of Lindt dark chocolate bars. A lot of people on CC seem to like Lindt, and I always read it and dismissed it, because as a chocolate snob, I was really skeptical that a good chocolate brand would be available at your local supermarket. However, Lindt seriously has good dark chocolate-- the pure bars, not the truffles, etc. available at the supermarket. It's really the best! It's very smooth, deep, and pure tasting with a delicious vanilla flavor. I eat the 90%, and it is not bitter at all. It barely has any sugar in it, but it tastes really rich and subtly sweet. Even the 99% bars I've tried, still not bitter. But those are not as smooth tasting, kind of brittle and hard. |

I truly hope you are kidding. I normally never post "mean" things-- but seriously! Did you not realize that fish are living animals?? Anything to do with eating dead animals is not vegetarian! How on earth could it be?? |

I'm surprised no one said this, but I always bring a small snack, because sometimes at the gym you suddenly get so hungry or low blood sugar, and you really need something to eat fast. |

I was and am still struggling with binge-eating. I think a major part of binge-eating is believing you are out of control and being really hard on yourself/getting depressed. First of all, although it is healthy to recognize that yes you do indeed have a problem, the unhealthy part happens when after you realize you have a problem you start getting scared and think you aren't in control anymore, and you can only submit to this disease that makes you eat more and more and more to the point of throwing up. You must stop that part! Think about it! You DO have control. No one can force you to put anything in your mouth. Remind yourself that the eating does NOT make you feel BETTER, only WORSE. Secondly, don't beat yourself up about this. That is the thing that makes this a horrible cycle. It's hard to get back to normal if you keep feeling so depressed about it. I find that I binge the most when I'm really depressed about my weight/control issues... I can't seem to let go of the fact that I binged yesterday, therefore I get so angry and depressed at myself that I binge today. You must put a stop to this madness. You must, and you can. Great advice I got from someone on CC before was ACT as if you already ARE. Act like you want to be healthy, and you will be! Seriously, there is nothing stopping you. It is all in our minds where we imprison ourselves. Battle it and win. We can do this. |

Hi Heather! First of all, congratulations!!! How exciting! Second of all, about food, as a vegan myself, I really think that you should be able to have an all vegan banquet. It's YOUR (and your fiancee's) day. Omnivores can eat vegan food for just one meal. It's not a big deal for them. Just make sure the food is good vegan food. |

I love your writing, vocabulary and style. Sorry I don't have an answer for your question though, as I am almost completely opposite of you. I loved food, or thought I did, tried to use it to solve all my problems, developed a horrible binge-eating disorder, and now I struggle very hard not to hate food... it's a long story. |

| Weight Loss | What should I eat more or less in Asian Cuisine? | Mar 21 2009 13:51 (UTC) |

I understand where you are coming from, esp. being Chinese myself. That's why I don't eat Chinese food. Lots of oil and refined carbs. I don't think a lot of people here understand that Chinese food in the US is way different from Chinese food in China/Taiwan. In Asia people don't do brown rice. It's pretty much impossible to find if you go out to eat. They also don't do steamed vegetables. Everything is stir-fried with oil. It's still a big mystery to me why people in Asia aren't as overweight as in the U.S. Although compared to fast food authentic Chinese food is probably healthier, it isn't exactly low-calorie at all, mostly because of too much oil in everything. Anyway, I think you can eat it in moderation or adapted (less oil) if you can cook for yourself, but for me I'd rather eat more of something else. |

| Foods | So you wanna go Veggie ??? | Mar 20 2009 04:12 (UTC) |

Going vegetarian I don't think would be a factor as much, because it's pretty easy to find plenty of things without meat in them, fattening things too like ice cream and baked goods. But if things with meat in them were your downfall before, then I guess you are in luck. Or if you can find new willpower from becoming vegetarian foods to avoid fattening vegetarian foods that you would eat before. The thing to remember is that after you become veg, you don't just cut out the calories from meat. Instead you replace it with calories from other things. Animal protein is the most concentrated in terms of protein to calorie ratio-- but as a vegetarian you could still eat eggs and dairy for the high protein. However, as a vegan myself, I and all the other vegans I know have only put on weight since becoming vegan, because plant-based proteins have a much lower protein to calorie ratio so that I have to eat 3 times as many calories of beans than eggs for example to get the same X amount of grams of protein. It sucks, but I think being vegan is worth it. Definitely look into becoming a vegetarian... there are many reasons for it: the environment, the animals, your health (vegetarians have about half the rate of cancer as omnivores; that itself is pretty substantial). Check out: www.goveg.com For weight loss, it depends I think. |

I am not sure what the "solution" to the OP's binge-eating was... not very clear to me, but from the very little she said, it seems as if eating a maintenance amount of calories cured her binge-eating which makes sense to me, since I found the same solution. Binge-eating has many causes, but for me I think one of the major problems was that when you try to eat a lot less/semi-starve yourself, you start going crazy... and then all you think about is food. You lose control and start binge-eating. My solution is that I can't let myself be such a perfectionalist. When I need to eat, I need to eat. | Foods | What are some of the most filling fruits and vegetables? | Feb 24 2009 05:13 (UTC) |
10 |
FRUITS: Strawberries, because they have a good amount of fiber and even protein, 5 calories/strawberry about (about 50 cals/cup compared to most other fruits 100 cals/cup or serving). Raspberries, blueberries, and other berries too, but I can't get my hands on those as readily. Melon like cantaloupe and honeydew, also 50 cals/cup. Oranges, about 65 cals each. Juicy! Tomatoes VEGGIES: broccoli, mushrooms, cauliflower, green beans, spinach |

thats really little. you should see how much i can eat. and no, volume does not matter. i can and do easily eat 2 bowls of steamed veggies with a bowl of soup every night, and although i stuff myself with high volume things, i need to feel full like that. |

Rooibus is the best. It is VERY SWEET, trust me. I would never put sugar in it. Rooibus is a type of tea-- herbal, caffeine-free, very rich. A brand of good rooibus blend is GOOD EARTH SWEET AND SPICY ORIGINAL CAFFEINE FREE-- must try seriously! It is now the only tea I buy. |

I'm assuming by bringing up nuts and popcorn that you want something crunchy and small? I'm vegan too, and I love soy crisps. Healthy and chip-like. You could also have cereal or fruit/vegetables. Those are mostly what I snack on. |

| Weight Loss | For those of you eating a low fat diet, how is it working for you? | Jan 22 2009 21:53 (UTC) |

It depends on what KIND of fat. Plant fats like avocado, peanut butter, olive oil are all good for you and help you feel full and lose weight in moderation. Animal fats are a different story, because although they may also make you feel fuller, they are saturated fat which is bad for you. |

Original Post by jade_100: I think what we feel often comes out in what we do/say or just how we say/do things whether we like it or not, so it's important to try to address our feelings first. Of course it is hard to control our feelings, but... it's still good to at least try. |

I can understand what you are saying, but although you wouldn't react like that doesn't mean that other people don't have substantial reasons for, well... kind of "giving up on themselves". I think people can be caught in a terrible defeatist mentality where they are just so depressed and down on themselves, and those people really need help not just with weight but with so many things, and in that case I would really sympathize with her. That might not be the case for her though, but you never know what is going through people's minds. They could be depressed as hell and not show it. |

Hot liquids like decaf tea and coffee or just plain hot water will fill you up, seriously. Just keep drinking all day long, and your body will be fooled, trust me. You just have to make yourself do it, and then you will see, it helps a lot! |
