| Weight Loss | Help freezing in the evenings | Sep 05 2009 18:52 (UTC) |
|
I was just the same last winter, a particularly cold one here in the UK. As soon as I sat down for the evening to relax my hands, feet and nose were like blocks of ice. I had lost 30 pounds (16% of my weight) the previous spring/summer so it was my first 'slimmed-down' winter. The doctor ran blood tests that came back clear and pinched the skin of my hands and feet to see how quickly they pinked up again, indicating normal circulation. I was eating for maintanence so not low on calories. The doctor could offer no help other than suggesting putting weight back on! My solution - when watching TV feet, up on a bean-bag filled with polystyrene beads with a hot water bottle and a furry throw on my feet. Once my feet were hot I was fine. Oh and the electric blanket on for an hour before getting in to bed. I'm not looking forward to the approaching winter. |

| Recipes | Using agar agar as a substitute for gelatine - help! | Sep 03 2009 10:38 (UTC) |
|
Thanks for your suggestions. I did manage after some fumbling around. I brought the mixture to a boil with the agar agar until it had all dissolved then allowed it to cool a little before pouring onto the base. I got a bit too much of a set so it didn't have a nice mousse feel in the mouth, more a cheesecake, but heh, it tasted good. I'll know another time how much to use. A bonus was that it was considerably cheaper than good quality gelatine leaves and who wants pork or beef products in their dessert?!! |

Thank you very much for that info. Some references say that acidic liquids need more agar but I'll start with 5 grams and see what happens! I can always serve it as a soft mousse with a crumble topping if I don't get a complete set! I am going to give it a go this afternoon so fingers crossed. |

I've enjoyed reading your contributions to the posting. Coverage of the 'debate' from here in the UK looks pretty extreme, with near hysterical people at Town Hall meetings (I don't want to be socialized! I don't want to be Stalinized) It's good to read comments from people who can detect the hand of the vested interests in the massively profitable U.S. insurance, medical and drug industries. Following a fall at my brothers' house in Houston (he was working there) we took my elderly mother to a recommended clinic. I found it distasteful, verging on the offensive that no one looked at my mother's injuries until it was established who was paying. This would never happen here in the UK. Anybody, including tourists, would have treatment, regardless of ability to pay. Efforts may be made later to recover the costs from tourists' travel insurers etc. As for my own experience with the NHS, within six weeks I went to my GP to report symptoms, had tests, was diagnosed with colon cancer and had 'state-of-the-art' key-hole surgery by a top surgeon. I have follow-up clinics every six months and will for the rest of my life. This is not 'free' as I have paid National Insurance all my working life. I could not have had better treatment 'going private' though I would have been in a single room rather than a small side ward of six beds. I don't think Americans can understand the fierce attachment most UK people have to our NHS. It is not perfect but neither is the German, Swedish, French, Canadian systems. Nor indeed is the U.S. system. Any system that excludes 20%+ of a country's population needs fixing. |

Thanks everyone who added to the list of points made in the programme. I've been working more protein in at lunchtime hoping it gets me through my afternoon 'slump' - it seems to be helping. I too think that porridge must have the blended soup effect. I certainly find that porridge fills me up for longer than cereal and milk. I have eaten it almost every morning for the past year and I never snack mid-morning. I make it 50/50 water and skimmed milk and have some brown sugar and a big dollop of low-fat yoghurt on it - yummy! It was good to see a well researched piece of television tackling this difficult problem. Let's have more of these and fewer instant and surgical 'makeovers', I say! |

I'm sure you know the routine by now - learn from it, put it behind you and get back on the programme. I think dkenworthy is right to highlight vacation choice. Cruises are the worst of all worlds for us. Just too much food all day and too little real activity. Maybe next time go for an activity holiday or just get the focus away from food and drink. This Easter I had a two week beach holiday and ate and drank pretty well but chose the most remote beach from the resort - a good 45 minutes walk over sand dunes. It worked! I had gained just one pound when I got home. Result. Don't be downhearted. The summer is coming. Get with the programme - you know it works! |

I got my Sunbeam postal scale from an office supplies big shed store. It does oz, grams and has the tare feature. Cost about $15. Its brilliant. |

E_v_e_r_y_b_o_d_y that I know personally who has done this diet is now heavier than before they did it. One friend bleats on to me about it being the only one that works for her........but it doesn't! She is now the heaviest she has ever been after repeatedly using it. My eldest brother is a mess after using it and the heaviest he has ever been. I could drone on, but you get the message. |

| Maintaining | How often do you allow treats? | Mar 02 2009 22:32 (UTC) |

I lost 30 lbs over five months and have been maintaining for four months now using this brilliant site. I build treats into my eating every day. In the week it will be something homemade in the afternoon when I hit a sugar low (like a banana and oat bar) After dinner I always have just one 10 gram square of dark (70%) chocolate with my coffee. Our Sunday breakfast is always butter croissants with a huge pot of coffee. I just make sure to keep the calories counted and the food generally balanced. I stay away completely from take-aways, fast food etc but I do have a good restaurant meal about once a month. It works for me but everybody is different! |

I can't do without chocolate so I buy the best quality Swiss dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) and eat one square (about 50 cals) and have it with coffee every night after dinner. If you nibble it very slowly and allow it to melt on your tongue, you get the full chocolate 'hit'. I've dropped 27 lbs in 5 months and couldn't have managed without it. Now I'm at my goal weight I might even have two squares!!!!! |

I have traded down to value ranges recently and have found 'dry goods' like porridge oats, bran flakes, flour as well as uht skimmed milk in cartons and low-fat yoghurt all very good from Tesco. I find Sainsbury's more expensive overall regardless of which range. |

I drink my usual tea with milk, no sugar but I enjoy oolong weak, black, no sugar. I buy the loose tea and find I can put two or three of the large dried leaves into a mug and top up with boiling water. I have found it a great appetite suppressant and got to my target weight this week using it regularly. It is good and cheap to buy at Chinese supermarkets. |

I have a sweet tooth also, but I have one square of Lindt 70% dark chocolate (52 cals) with my coffee after dinner. It gives me a real chocolate 'hit' and I don't feel I am being deprived. I nibble it and let it melt on my tongue to really taste it. I have lost at least one pound every week since mid-April - I'm 24lbs down and just 2 to go to my target weight so it has worked for me! |

Sorry to hear that your weight loss has stalled. It may be that your eating plan would be a great maintanence plan but it could well be that you are not managing a 500 calorie deficit. The only sure way to know is to weigh and log everything that passes you lips. Get some very accurate postal electronic scales that measure in 1 gram increments. Set your activity level to sedentary then log your exercise sessions. If you have a 500 to 700 calorie deficit between intake and output you will lose weight. Four months in I still religiously weigh and log everything. I am down 21 lbs, losing just one pound every week after the first 2 or 3 weeks when it was 2 or 3 lbs. I hope you persist as it can be a great way to mange your weight. Best of luck. |

All that detox stuff is hype and rubbish. Your body is designed to deal with 'toxins' effectively. Its what your liver and kidneys do. Just eat well, drink fluids and take some exercise - your body will do the rest. |

| Health & Support | For all those who have gotten Colonoscopies... please read! | Sep 12 2008 23:05 (UTC) |

Not sure about pre-cancerous lesions but polyps are the usual problem. 99% of tumors (edit; colon tumors) develop from these polyps and they are easily removed during the colonoscopy procedure. They are not sure what triggers them to change. Polyps tend to run in families. I went to my doctor when I had the first signs of a noticable 'change' in toilet habit and had a colonoscopy very promptly. A watched the procedure 'live' on a monitor and spotted the tumor myself so I knew there was bad news coming! I had it removed using keyhole surgery, together with 8" colon and have been clear for 2 years now. No chemo or radiotherapy needed. The moral is get to your doctor promptly guys if you have anything giving you concern. |

Don't forget that you have already indicated what level of activity you do. The estimated burn figure includes that, so don't add it in again using the activity log. I registered as sedentary and then I log all activities I manage to do. Then I eat up to that number minus a 500 cal deficit. I have lost a pound a week for four months (21lbs down) and am within 5lbs of target, so it has worked for me. Best of luck |

No, you are mistaken or someone was having a laugh at your expense. NO horse meat is eaten in England. I live in the New Forest and our surplus ponies that run wild are sadly bought up at auction by French horsemeat dealers. However I do remember taking a group of students to Paris and we definitely ate it there. It was delicious |

Try a Sunbeam postal scale from an office supply shed store. I paid about $20 from a store in Houston when visiting from the UK. Its great - increments of 1 gram and has the tare button to add and re-zero. |

It depends if you want to be told how to run your life based on a bunch of myths and legends - common to every world religion, by the way, or if you want to have confidence in the accumulated knowledge and understanding of humanity. I can tell you from my experience, when you are lying on the operating table, having key hole surgery to save your life you will be glad of knowledge and understanding of science, rather than magic talismans and chants, however well intentioned. |

| Weight Loss | Wuyi Oolong tea? | Aug 18 2008 10:44 (UTC) |

My Chinese sister in law introduced me to Oolong tea and I also find it useful as an appetite suppressant. I get the munchies about 9 in the evening and a brew of Oolong satisfies me and doesn't interfer with my sleep. I do take it very weak, however - a sort of pale straw colour, as it does contain some caffeine, I believe. |

I weigh almost everything (unless it is already a calorie counted portion). I bought some great postal scales from a big office place when I was visiting the States. It measures in increments of one gram. This morning I treated myself to a Bahlsen Choco Leibniz with my morning cuppa when I checked its weight at 13 grams it was just 65 cals. The guide on the pack only gave values per 100 grams. CC did the math! It is no use guessing - buy those scales! |

Hi. I've been using the site for 12 weeks. Started at 183 lbs with 26 to loose. I'm down by 15 lbs and delighted. I have wanted to do this for about 3 years and kept making half-hearted attempts. Logging everything is fun and confirms some recent research where people who wrote down everything they ate lost, on average, twice as much as those who didn't. (Can't remember whose research it was I'm recommending the site to loads of middle-aged friends who battle to keep their weight down. |

My digital scale also can give different readings if I get on repeatedly. I try not to obsess about weighing and weigh once a week at the same time of day (after the bathroom first thing Monday morning) As long as the trend is down I'm happy. The tape measure is fairly brutal! |
