Health & Support Is it okay to have a cheating day once a week? Jul 25 2009

It worked for me.  I always bumped up my caloric intake about twice a week (usually Wednesday and Saturday), and it seems to have helped keep my metabolism guessing, as I lost over 70 pounds in about 8 months without plateauing, and have maintained that loss for almost a year now.

I have a light breakfast, then I mix up a packet of Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal when I get to work.  That stuff expands like crazy (seems like more than their regular oatmeal), and keeps cravings away til lunchtime for me.

Health & Support Donating Blood Oct 26 2008

I donate blood aout 4 times per year (I'm in the life-saver's club ... with my blood type they call me to donate frequently).  I look at those days as "free" days... eat a large meal before donating (to prevent reactions) and munch out on the sugar cookies afterwards..I tell them, "I'm only here for the cookies"...Anyway the main thing for me is to keep it in perspective.  I have successfully lost 75 pounds and am maintaining well, so a free day every 2 or 3 months hasn't thrown me off course.

Here are the systems of equations:

1)   .05x + .09y = 250, x + y = 4500

2)   13.6f + 3.4m = 75, 2.5f +3.7m = 15

3)   8b +3r = 58, 2b +5r = 40

Health & Support Donating blood after weight loss? Oct 04 2008

Being able to continue donating blood was one of my motivating factors for losing weight ( my pulse rate was often too high...over 100...because of my excess weight, and I would be "deferred" by the blood bank ).

Anyway, the first time i donated was back in the late 70's when I was in college.  I hadn't had much to eat, and after donating I became light-headed, dizzy, and sweaty.  I almost passed out, and was made to lie down with my feet elevated til I felt better.  They told me I should always eat a large meal before donating, and that's what I've done ever since...30 years of donating with no ill effects.

Now it's a "treat myself day"... yesterday I had a 3-egg wetern omelette, 5 strips of bacon, and a glass of chocolate milk before donating...It was great!

So, I was wondering if it's possible that you aren't eating enough before donating?

P.S. Thanks to CC, I've lost 77 pounds, and my pulse rate is always in the 70's...I never get deferred by the blood bank anymore.

Weight Loss How much weight had you lost when people started noticing? Sep 16 2008

My step-mother was the first to notice, after I'd lost about 20 pounds, then my co-workers and bosses noticed and gave me a lot of encouragement.

After about 50 pounds, there were some who started to ask if I was healthy (or ask others who knew me if I was OK).  People were used to seeing me with a full, rounded face, and the first inclination is to think you are sick when they notice facial weight loss.  I didn't mind though...just explained that I was living healthier and feeling fantastic.

Also, this spring, all of my farmers/customers (I run a grain elevator), who hadn't seen me since last fall,  noticed and expressed their admiration and congratulations.

I have to admit, I really did enjoy the attention, and I never got tired of hearing, "Oh, Scott...You've lost weight"!

I am proud of what I've been able to accomplish, because we all know it's not that easy to lose weight, and I owe a huge portion of my success to all of you fellow calorie counters, and the information, wisdom, advice and support I have received from this web site and the people who use it....

THANK YOU ALL, SO MUCH!

Sorry for rambling...back to the point...people do notice, even if they don't say anything, but what's more important is that even if they didn't notice, it would still be worth doing...Keep up the good work!

I donate blood quite often, but the blood bank often deferred me because my pulse rate was over 100.  That was my clue that I needed to become healthier, but I really did it for my wife.  She has several chronic conditions (not weight related...she's petite), and I realized that if I didn't do something, I wasn't going to be around to take care of her later on in life when she'll need me the most.  I just couldn't do that to the woman I love.

I've now lost over 70 pounds (see my gallery), my pulse rate is now in the 70's, I no longer have sleep apnia, my blood pressure is lower, I no longer have high cholesterol, profuse sweating, or hip pains.

And I owe most of my success to this web site, and the good people who are here to help each other.

Many thanks to you all for your kind comments and encouraging words.  (Some of you ladies made me blush a little, too).  It's nice to have so many people take a few moments from their busy lives to say "way to go" to a fellow CC-er.  This will definitely help me keep motivated as I (hopefully) go into maintenance mode in a month or two.

I tried several brands before I found one that didn't make me gag.  I actually like one called Xtreme, Chocolate Mint flavor, from MLO Sports Nutrition...30 grams of protein per bar...Kind of high calorie, but I eat 1/4 or 1/3 bar at a time, and it actually is pretty good at getting rid of that hungry feeling for a while.

It works for me.  I eat 1500-1800 except for Wednesday and Saturday, when I bump it up to 2000-2300.  It gives me a little break and the enjoyment of some "comfort" foods every few days, and seems to keep my metabolism from getting used to the deficit.

I started on January 15th at 242 pounds, and right now I am at 185.

Near the bottom of your log page you will see a box where you can pick the date range...it is usually set for today.  Just below the "today" selection, click the other little circle to let you pick a beginning and ending date range.  Set both dates for yesterday, and click on "display report".  Then when you show your log it will be for yesterday, and you can make the entries you need.  When you get yesterday done, set it back to "today".

I love McDonald's Sweet Tea, but not the calories that come with it.  You CAN get it without the sugar though...At all of our McDonald's, the drinks are self-serve, and there is always a canister of UNSWEETENED Sweet Tea right there beside the regular ones.  I add some Splenda and love it!  It's much better than their "Iced Tea".

I have a set of small "nested prep/measuring bowls" like they use on the cooking shows.  Every night i fill one to the 1/2 cup line with Breyers Double Churn Light Vanilla Bean ice cream.  The small bowl helps to control portion size.  Sometimes I'll add a dozen dark chocolate M&M's.  I eat it slowly while sitting at the computer, savoring each bite.  I've found that it satisfies my cravings for ice cream and chocolate for less than 150 calories.
