The Lounge Know Any Great Travel Destinations? Sep 16 2008

We went to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands for our honeymoon.  I believe we stayed at the Wyndham Resort and it was all inclusive.  The island is unbelievable.  We also went to a beach called Magan's Bay which was incredible - it was on the top 10 list of world's best beaches.  Definitely a good trip.  We are trying to go back in March for our 5th wedding anniversary :)

The Lounge Hurricane Ike... In Cincinnati, Ohio Sep 16 2008

I'm in Lexington and we didn't get it nearly as bad as you guys up in Cincy.  It was really windy, but I haven't really seen much evidence of damage.  Bummer about no rain though, we could really use it.

My best friends parents live in Cincy (well, just outside to the North) and they just got power back last night.

I went off the pill last August and didn't get a period until April.  They have just started to become regular this month.  I took Provera in November and again in February to "jump start" my body, but it didn't work and made me very sick.  My doctor did a blood test and she said everything was normal so I didn't really worry about it.

If you took the pill for 8 years, its normal that your body will take some time to get back to normal.  Be patient.  If you go 3 months without a period, go see your doctor.

I fell asleep before I could see their performance the other night, but from seeing them before, I was glad they were voted off too.

What is up with that 4 year old getting into the top 10?!?!?!  I mean really, I know she's cute and all but she definitely can't perform in vegas.  She's really good for her age, but she doesn't deserve to win.

I think I just have bad luck with BLACK cars.....I've totaled 2 myself, and my husband got a new black car this past December and wrecked it twice in a matter of 8 days!!!  At least his car survived....I swear mine were both trying to kill me...and instead just killed themselves!

Is there any chance that the town you are going to will have a farmers market? If so you can pick up some really delicious fruits and veggies and maybe even some really yummy baked goods and help out the local economy at the same time!

Thats funny that you ask that.  We're going back to our hometown and my mother in law just called to tell me she was on her way to the farmers market and asked if I wanted anything...LOL.  I told her to surprise me, so I guess I'll see what I'm getting later tonight!

Fitness SPRAINED ANKLE! Need advice please :) Aug 29 2008

First of all, I would definitely rest your ankle.  I hurt my ankle last winter and refused to rest it for more than a couple days at a time.  I couldn't run, but found out I could do the elliptical every few days with minimal pain (of course it did hurt for a couple days afterwards).  Problem was, that it never got the proper rest to heal itself and I have just been able to take up running again as of this summer.  I had to do what I would call "compromised cardio" for about 6 months instead of just resting for a few weeks.  Not fun!

Well, there are lots of options for snacks...

I ALWAYS keep snacks with me, either in the car, my purse, my desk drawer...I swear you will NEVER catch me with out food...LOL.  I like bananas, apples, pears, peaches, grapes (pretty much any fruit will work), kashi granola bars....they have chewy and crunchy ones...I recommend any of the chewy ones except the peanut butter (tastes like cardboard) and I really like the Pumpkin Spice crunchy ones, sunflower seeds, nuts, protein bars work if you are looking for more of a meal replacement thing.....there are SO many things you can make portable.

You don't have to peel them.  Actually, I've never even heard of doing that....

We grill ALL THE TIME, and just rinse them off, cut in slices, season with seasoned salt, put in tin foil and throw on the grill.  They are yummy Smile

You don't actually have to have the special Nike shoes for it to work.  The sensor will work in any shoe if you attach it correctly.  I have been thinking of getting one.... I got my IPOD Nano back in December and just haven't gotten around to it yet.  Does it really tell you the distance while you're running?  That just seems so cool....

Fitness Workout that strengthens the knees? Jul 30 2008

I'll venture a guess here.  I have bad knees from a combination of activities I did in college.  I think the opposite muscle in this case would be the left side of your knee.   The logical answer to strengthen it is to do the opposite exercise of what hurts it.  In my case, I was told to run backwards :)  Now, I'm not that coordinated, but I did walk backwards on a treadmill and it seemed to help.  Good luck!

Yes, that's what most people on here do however, that doesn't work for me. When i did that I ended losing a TON of weight and was severly underweight and unhealthy.

So I'm wondering what others would consider my activity level.

That is what happened to me too.  I would think you could maybe take the calorie amount between light and moderate and start with that.  That is what I am trying right now.  Hasn't been long enough to see how it's working though....

Thanks you guys.  I was going to make yesterday a day off, but i just couldn't do it!  I love my kickboxing to much :).  I have decided, after reading everyones advice, that I will take tomorrow off.  At least from formal exercise.  We just bought a new house and have plenty to do around there, so at least I'll be moving around and won't feel guilty about skipping the gym!  My mother-in-law is going to be in town too, so I'm sure I'll be busy with all the "family" stuff..... :)

I really don't think it matters at all what time you eat as long as you're not overeating.  I have a protein shake (between 150 and 250 calories depending on what I put in it) every night around 8 or 8:30.  I am usually in bed by 9:30 at the latest (I get up at 4:45 for the gym).

I watch the people around me for motivation.  If they can keep going, then so can I :).  I also tell myself "I can do anything for just 5 more minutes...."

Thats so true!  People think I'm nuts, but I actually enjoy my running, tennis, kickboxing....I think that's why its so hard for me to take "off" days.

I'm going to try to come up with a schedule that gives me a day off at least once every two weeks and see how I feel after that.  Thanks for the input everyone!

Any good ways to keep up with protein intake without eating too much meat?

I do protein shakes.  I bought a protein powder in berry flavor.  I mix that with some orange juice and some kind of fruit (usually strawberries or half a banana).  Add ice and put in the blender.  Its 23 grams of protein in one scoop and my shakes usually add up to between 175 and 225 calories depending on the ingredients.  You can also mix with just orange juice if you are short on time.

I try for at least 75 grams of protein a day to maintain and build muscle.

I'm 5'1 as well and around 101 lbs.  I have a desk job, although I usually am constantly running around all crazy.  Today I brought with me:  cantaloupe for a morning snack, turkey on a flatbread "wrap" with lettuce, tomatos, onions, cucumbers, laughing cow cheese and some cottage cheese for lunch, and watermelon for an afternoon snack.  I also have some kashi bars, balance bars, sunflower seeds, and green tea on-the-go packets in my drawer.  For exercise, I really like running outside, but I do have a gym membership as well.  I am one of those crazy people that you can see there at 5am :)  I lift weights for about 45 minutes 3x a week, and either go running, play tennis, do kickboxing (some kind of cardio) about 4-5x a week.

Nice to meet another shorty :)
