Weight Loss trying to lose the last 15! Mar 11 2009

Take a Break!! Sometimes your body needs a week or two off to catch up to all of the changes you are making to your lifestyle.

I was eating healthy (about 1300 cal) and excersizing 5-6 days a week and got stuck at 125 lbs for 2 months. I took a month off, from the gym and ate at maintenance calories. When I re-started my diet and gym routine again 10lbs melted off in a month!

Now I am 115lbs, 5'3 and fit :)

I recommend checking out NROLFW if you're looking for a new weight routine.

Good luck :)

Foods what part of "no mayo or butter" did you not understand!? Aug 14 2008

I work in a restaurant and as a mayo-hater myself I totally understand where you are coming from. My theory is that the kitchen staff is just programmed to make items the way they were trained to. I order food with NO MAYO, or NO DRESSING in BIG BOLD letters and they STILL put it on. I also don't have a problem sending it back regardless of if its for myself or a customer and the kitchen staff always feel really badly for making it wrong. (and in some instances take stupid shortcuts to make it right again....ie; the chicken example above)

I avoid eating at work now. If I want a meal made my way, i'll make it myself.

Try eating at maintenance for a week (just don't up your calories with junk) and skip your strength training sessions. Your body may just need a chance to fully recover from your program and then continue what you have been doing because it's olbviously working for you!

Taking a week off every couple of months is not going to hurt your progress in the long run.

You look great, keep up the good work!

The phase I workouts are taking me approx 30min, (I warm up for an additional 15min on the elliptical). I also do intervals on my non-strength training day to burn some extra cals!

Although the nutrition plan has some great meal idea's it relies alot on you to "trust" your body and its needs, I don't know about yours but my body lies to me all the time telling me it "needs" cookies! So I stick to clean eating and calorie counting instead.

If stage III = Butt compliments, i'm definitely sticking to it

I'm on week two of this program and so far so good! I discovered that after 5 years (on and off) of gym-going that I was ignoring some very important muscles in my various routines. I appreciate that the workouts are relatively short and I that I can tailor them to my own body's fitness level.

I don't follow the diet either but I have tried some of the recipies and they are quite tasty, especially the homemade protein bars, yummy!

Definitely re-vamp your weight routine, your muscles need 48 hours to recover from weight training. If you aren't feeling "sore" enough up the weight and drop the reps to 8-12. I injured myself from overtraining and ended up on crutches for 2 weeks so now i'm super careful, I weight train mon/wed/fri and do cardio tues/thurs/sat. I am still losing at the same rate and my body doesn't hate me anymore!

Check out "The new rules of lifting for women" I am currently 2 weeks into this strength training program and love it (I skip the diet advice).

Slow down, take the time to get to know your body and you'll be at your goal weight in no time :)

Fitness any success stories?? Jul 19 2008

I had a baby 5 months ago and i'm 4 pounds away from my pre-preggo weight! I chose a combination of strength training and cardio 6 days a week, as well as a 500-700 cal deficit on most days.

I've just started the same progam as Cheree and have found that it significantly reduces my time at the gym and is still a great workout. Now I am shifting my focus to mainly strength training with a couple cardio sessions per week, I'll let you know how it goes!

I also recommend investing in a Heart Rate Monitor, I seriously over-estimated the calories I was burning at the gym by logging activities through this site.

As long as you keep your program realistic and allow yourself some indulgences you are gonna be back to your pre-preggo self in no time at all!

Pregnancy & Parenting Any 1st time mom's trying to lose weight... Jul 11 2008

Congrats to all the new momma's! I too am a new mother, my baby boy is 5 months old today and I also gained 55lbs while preggo. I ate EVERYTHING while I was pregnant, my friends loved going out for dinner with me because i was guaranteed to order dessert and share it!

I resolved to adopt a healthier lifestyle after giving birth and I am now less than 5 pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight! I started CC and working out when my son was 6wks old as well. Now my focus is more on body recomposition than weight loss but I would be more than willing to offer any advice to those of you just starting out.

If I could do it, so can you! Get out there and make your body proud!Laughing

Foods Almonds Jul 07 2008

Almonds are a great source of "good" fat. remember that 1g of fat = 9cals.  Olive oil is also high in fat and is 40cals per tsp! Both items are very healthy and can be a great part of your diet in moderation.

My strategy for losing weight is simple math...I make sure I have at least a deficit of 500 cals a day to lose 1 - 1.5 pounds per week. 4 days a week I'll eat 1700 cals and burn 500 cals at the gym (HRM verified). The other 3 days I'll eat 1200 cals and don't go to the gym. This way there is always a 500cal deficit and I can still "treat" myself to some extra calories without feeling deprived and binging.

Foods "Low Fat" Muffins? Jul 07 2008

I absolutely love VITAMUFFINS!!! I'm actually eating one right now! They even get a grade "A" from CC!

I too am a muffin-lover and used to fall for the whole "low fat" thing but as previously mentioned they are ridiculously high in sugar and calories.

I'll even transform the occasional vitamuffin into a cupcake with some fat free cool whip on top...mmmmmm delicious!

I go to the gym every morning too. I'm under the impression that as long as you don't work the same muscle groups two days in around you can avoid overtraining.

this is what I do...

Monday 60 min cardio + upper body

Tuesday 20 min HIIT + core

Wednesday 10 min cardio warmup + lower body

Thursday 20 min HIIT + upper body

Friday off

Saturday 20 min HIIT + core

Sunday 60 min cardio (lower intensity intervals)

This routine works very well for me, just make sure that you are making the most of your workouts by increasing your weights every couple weeks and pushing yourself to the max during HIIT intervals. I've managed to lose 22lbs since Easter!

hmmmm....I'm having issues with the "C" word right now too. I don't eat alot of fat (usually 15% of daily intake), perhaps I should increase it? I cut out bananas because I thought they were the culprit but I would love to eat them again.

Motivation It's Friday and I'm not sure I won't binge again... Jun 22 2008

I have the same problem! I LOVE relaxing with a couple glasses of nice red wine and a great meal out, I tell myself that i've worked so hard all week and I deserve the little splurge. However, as soon as I get home from the restaurant I go straight to the cupboard and even though I need to get a step stool from the garage to reach the bad-for-me foods I still do it!

What I discovered is that on the weekends I stay up later so there is a much longer time-frame where I have to behave myself after dinner. So I decided to make my "night out" on Wednesday instead and it worked! By the time I got home from dinner on Wed it was already 10pm, and I go to bed around 11 on weeknights so it was too late for a binge....and because I feel like I just had a night out the weekend is here and i'm eating well because it feels too soon to have another splurge night out.

I hope this helps!

I can't wait til' next Wednesday...mmmmmmm wine :)

Weight Loss My job sucks!!! Jun 22 2008

I know EXACTLY where you're coming from Odie! I have the exact same job and I totally understand how it's extremely difficult to get a break during "regular" eating hours.

As I do closes too, I always sit down and have something to eat before my last co-worker gets cut even though it's usually around 10pm, but if i'm staying up til 3am anyways then it doesn't seem so late...relatively speaking. If you take an unpaid 30 minute break it should make no difference to your employer who minds the bar while you are eating.

I also sneak snacks in the beer fridge during my shift, usually berries or apple slices, sometimes even a high-carb protein shake or bar so when I go grab a fresh case of beer or change a keg I can refuel.

And I always eat a filling meal right before my shift so that I can make it til 10 without my stomach threatening to eat itself. Try a baked potato, a 4oz chicken breast (I add cajun spice) and a pile of veggies. If I don't eat right before work then i'm doomed to pick at whatever I can get my hands on, it's amazing how many french fries can "fall off" a guests plate and accidently land in my mouth! LOL

The bonus of our job is that we burn a ton of calories while we run our butts off all night, make sure you are accounting for these calories in your BMR and eating accordingly, I totally underestimated how much I burn in a shift.

Cheers!

I buy plain almonds from the bulk section (so I don't have a big jar lying around) and I roast them myself with a teensy bit of olive oil and a teensy bit of low cal maple syrup. I LOVE nuts and I buy just enough  to eat 10 per day (about 100 cals), as a snack or in a salad. That way I know if I eat them all in one sitting there won't be anymore until my next shopping day!

oh...and I definitely can't be trusted around pretzels!

Weight Loss How do I get rid of it? Jun 14 2008
22:30 (UTC)

There is a great glute workout on the womens health magazine website, I have been using it for a few weeks now and definitely feel the burn! The bonus to this workout is that they show video's of every move, I find it so much easier to see a rep in action rather than have it explained to me.

Good luck! and have a great honeymoon :)

Fitness Building muscle vs. Toning muscle Jun 04 2008

Ok, so what I think You are trying to tell me is that right now I am lifting to maintain my current muscle tone or mass at the same I am in a calorie deficit to lose fat. This makes me feel so much better thanks, at least I know I am not lifting for no reason!

How do core exercises fit in? is it considered the same as weight training?

I'm just trying to maximize my workout, i'm currently putting in 1.5 hours a day at the gym broken down into 60min cardio + 30min (alternating weights and core) 5- 6 days per week. Is this a good system for losing those last 10lbs? I usually create 1000 calorie deficit per day between diet and exercise.

Any thoughts!!?!

Fitness calories used for exercising by heart rate percentage May 30 2008

I use the "miowatch". In theory it's a great tool, you just program your info (weight/age etc) and it measures your heart rate by percent.  Also you can program it daily much like this website by updating your calorie intake throughout the day, it will subtract calories burned from this number as well to give you a running daily total.

However i've used this twice now and don't understand how I only burn 350 calories after 60 minutes of cardio at 75-85% of my BMR? I keep double checking the info i've inputted and haven't come across anything funky. Weird.

Not sure if this helps.....
