I started on the running plan that pipanchew suggested.  I started on week 3, I think, because I thought I was in pretty good shape.  It's do-able but certainly a challenge.  I started the following week today and almost died.  But - at the same time, it felt good to accomplish something and see impovements.

I'm "running" at 5.3 and walking at 3.8 with an incline of 2.  I'll probably up the speed to 5.4/3.9 for day 2 and maybe 5.5/3.9 for day 3 of this training week.

Good luck!

Fitness Skinny Fat... UGH May 22 2008

Thanks to anyone who can sit and read my super long narrative.  Sorry about that.

I'm eating minimal fat - but good fat.  I average about 30g per day of fat and 9-10g of sat fat.  (yeah, got this whole spreadsheet thing cause I'm completely anal.)  Fat runs at about 60% of my daily allowance and sat fat runs about 75% of my daily allowance.  I rarely go over.

Starting this week, Monday, I began trying to make my deficit larger by 100 cals.

I started paying to go to a gym about a month and a half ago.  While that isn't a very long time to judge "stick-with-it-ness"  But I feel more motivated and determined then when I could go to a gym that was free.

Now, if I think about skipping a day I had planned on going, then I tell myself that I'm wasting money... and I really hate that!!!!

OMG - Zumba is so much fun!  My gym offers Zumba once a week.  I tried it last week and was so thrilled about the whole thing.  I couldn't go last week... but Zumba is tonight and I'm so excited... (excited about working out???  what is the world coming to?)

amilagirl is right - you don't even think that you're exercising - it's just fun!

sugarsweet - you totally got the whole "skinny fat thing"  With clothes on, it's all good - but naked... that's a different story... that's when you see the "fat" part of being skinny.

My girlfriends didn't get the skinny fat phrase either... so I showed my abdomen (with the roll, while I was standing  ) and they said "OH... OK" all wide eyed.

Weight Loss Has anyone lost weight w/o exercising or with Minimal?? How?? May 21 2008

I lost about 50 pounds in 6-7 months just by watching my calorie intake.  Of course, I had a totally horrible diet (like 3g+ calories per day on average) - so just adjusting my calories to a little below normal made the pounds just melt.

However, I didn't do hardly any exercise worth mentioning.  And now, I'm suffering the consequences... skinny fat.  It's really upsetting to have lost all that weight and still not look (naked, mind you) the way I want to look.  In retrospect, I really should have exercised; but had this job where exercising was almost impossible.  Excuses... excuses...

Looks like everyone has pretty much said what I was thinking.  I lived in Germany for the past 6 years.  Walking seems to be the national sport - even more so in the small towns.  Depending on the area, you are likely to encounter hills that should give a bit of difficulty to your walk/run.

Perhaps look into a resitance band or two to take with you.  They're super small and lightweight so they're really easy to take in your bag.  I usually take one with me if I'm going to be gone longer than 2 days.  (You can always buy them there, but with the dollar being so bad to the Euro, you might want to opt for here instead.)  If you do want to buy one in germany, there are sporting goods stores that sell them and wal-mart type stores (Real) which are sometimes hit or miss.  I got mine from the Galleria Kaufhauf.  Those stores are pretty much throughout Germany - like a JC Penny or Sears.

Lastly, be sure to go to the schwimbad (public swimming pool).  Germans are big into the pool thing.  Don't go on a Saturday or Sunday.  It does cost about 5-10 Euro to get in but it's like a little mini water park, they have lots of options.  Word of caution - there are such things as nude day.  Be sure to ask before you go!!!

Enjoy!

My favorite is frozen raspberries and yogurt.

2/3 - 3/4 cup frozen raspberries (I like to pound the raspberries in to little pieces with a mallet while still in the bag - seems to taste better that way.  Try VIP raspberries if you can find them)

1/4-1/3 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt

Stir it up and eat!  It tastes like ice cream - but better for you and less calories.  (Less than 100 per bowl.)

I sometimes add a little fat free reddi whip on the top.

Bars are the new big thing for me.  I'm probably eating too many during the week, but I look at it this way - it's way better for me than a greasy drive-thru meal.  My two favories are Atkins Caramel Fudge brownie - 150 calories and 12g protein.  Pure Protein has wonerful ones as well.  My top three are (I can't decide which one i like best) Chewy Chocolate Chip, Double Chocolate, and Chocolate Peanut Butter.  They're all between 180-200 calories and have a whopping 20g of protein.

Garnet18, I totally agree with you.  Granola bars do absolutely nothing for my stomach but make me even more hungry.  However, I will say the protein bars that I listed must have some kind of special additive that makes them expand in my stomach and I feel totally full.  Believe me when I say I'm a fat kid at heart and have been known to pack away serious quantities of food.  Probably dont want to know what makes them so filling, but I don't care because it works.  Not the best attitiude to have, I know.

Weight Loss Advice???? Not losing and I don't know why!! May 12 2008

I had hit a point after losing a bunch of weight where it didn't seem to matter what I did - I just couldn't lose any more.  Changing exercising.. you name it.  I started looking at not just the calorie counts in foods but what kinds of food I was consuming.  I upped the protein and cut some carbs and started dropping weight again.

Check to see that you're getting a sufficient amount of protein and not over doing it with carbs and sodium.

As jensin4 said, please make sure you're eating enough.  I don't know if this works for anyone else, but I have found it helpful to eat half of what I burn.  So, if I burn 100 calories in exercise, I try to eat an extra 50 calories.  Usually this will consist of some type of high protein bar.  Also, I eat the bar right after I work out because I read somewhere that consuming foods in high protein less than 30 minutes after exercise aids in muscle development and fat burn.  If that actually has any scientific merit or not, I have no idea - but it seems to be working.

I love raspberries and yogurt (reddi whip too - fat free).

If you're stuck on the marshmallow thing - get the Walden Farms that can be found in the diet food section.  It has nothing in it - no sugar no calories.  I'm still not sure how they do that, but it's great.  I dipped fresh strawberries in it last night and it was awesome.

Foods High Protein Snacks? May 09 2008

I LOVE Atkins Chocolate Fudge bars - they're 160 calories and 12g of protein.  Also, the Pure Protein bars are between 180 and 200 calories and have 20g of protein.  Chewy chocolate chip, double fudge, and chocolate peanut butter are my favorites.

If you want a change from Granny Smith, try Honey Crunch.  They have the same texture as a Granny Smith, but are much sweeter.  They're usually only available during apple season.

I suffer from an apple addiction as well - apple and peanut butter - but I'm only eating one apple a day.  Is it possible for you to bring a fruit or snack with you to school instead of relying on what the school has?  Maybe dried fruit if you're worried about fresh fruit getting tossed around in your bag/purse.

I bring a bag of snacks with me everywhere I go (drives my husband nuts) - just so I won't eat garbage when i get hungry.

If nothing else - feel comforted in the thought that there are worse things to be addicted to - like frozen raspberries and reddi whip.  :(
