Hi, everyone!!  Bet you all thought I'd vanished off the face of the earth,LOL.  Well still at it, cycling that is.  I have been riding alot, imagine that, finished up last year with a total of 12,000 miles, way too much!  This year I'm not going to keep track, it just makes you too obsessive.  Going to do some riding in Colorado this summer, Gmule told me last year about a ride called the Triple bypass in evergreen Colorado that I signed up for.  Look it up, it's quite a ride!

My weight got a little out of control, so I've come back to get it back down again before I ride the mountains this summer.  One thing I've found is that taking the weight off isn't too hard, but keeping it in control is a whole nother thing.

Glad to see so many of you are still here and cycling, hope all is well with you and you are being successful in your weight loss goals.

See ya all soon, DAN

hello, fellow cyclists.  I edited the original post as I realized I haven't updated it in a long time and a lot of the posters are not even active any more. plus this puts it back on the front page, tee hee!

As for cycling, the weather has been less than perfect lately so not much riding going on. hope the rest of you are getting some in.

BTW hope anyone out in the south CA area is OK and that the fires are leaving you and your loved ones alone.

Ohio45,  when you go to the bike shop look on the counter (or ask), to see a small brass adaptor that you put on top of your presta valve.  It will make the valve act like a shafer valve and you won't have the problem of pulling the valve out again. It costs about 2 dollars and is very small.

I use it all the time when I fill my tires, it's an extra step to screw it on and off but well worth the effort.

here's how it works,  You remove the plastic cap on your presta valve, open the top of your presta and then screw the adaptor on, now use the big hole on your pump and fill the tire.  It stops a lot of head aches.

whatis,  I started at 185, got down to 138, and now I'm at 155 (5'9") so I'm still well within a healthy BMI number, but I would like to get back to 150 before next summer.  I found that all the riding made me eat at a higher level and now it is hard to get control of myself.

However I do eat very healthy, I havent eaten fast food in two years.  Just need to eat a little less now.

Thanks for the props, DAN

townes, I'm mostly a roadie, but I do moutain bike a little. 17 mph is a conservative number, as an example I did a 111 mile ride last week at a average speed of 18.8. Last night was 20.5 for 35 miles.  I live in Ohio so I feel your pain at the onset of winter, be riding the trainer indoors soon.

andesite, You just need a real good saddle and a numb butt,LOL!!

Hi everyone,

Well I made it!!!  10,000 miles!!!!

It took 290 days, 34.5 miles/day. conservative estimate(using 17 mph as average speed) is 580 hours of riding, that's 24.2 days on a bike.

I will never do it again, at least not on purpose!  That is way too much time on a bike.

Well I wonder how far I will get by the end of the year. DAN

joji, welcome!

well at first, I would suggest just takling it easy and have fun until you build up a little endurance.  The worst thing to do is go out and try to add on too much mileage too fast.

As you pointed out winter will be upon us soon enough, go to a local book store or library and pick up some books on training to get the most out of your indoor riding.

winter will also give you a chance to track down some local bike clubs to ride with next spring.

above all keep it fun! DAN

mlb, half metric, DUH! I was thinking full metric. Well one stop would be around 15 miles anyway.  I did a pelton ride for armstrong fondation myself. I think we had around 50 riders  for that one.

I think hanging with the fas riders didn't hurt my wifes ability any, it just made her more determined, just like you.

Have fun, DAN

mlb, A good trick to use when you do your 1/2 metric ride is to think of it as 3-20 mile rides, most events have lots of rest stops along the way and they are usually spaced out at 15 to 20 mile lengths.  Keep in mind though that you don't want to stop for too long >10 minutes, this keeps your body form thinking it is done for the day.

Don't worry about keeping people back, most of us welcome new riders and know that it takes time to build to a certain level, as long as they see you are working to improve, I can't imagine they would mind staying back to get you along.

Our club has several riders, some new some older who aren't as fast as some of us.  We take turns off the back to make sure everyone has company and has help if needed.

What charity are you riding for?  There's a couple rides I go on that get like 3000 riders, how maney will be on yours?

mlb, That radicial of a weight loss would be hard to maintain, If your losing now keep at what your doing and remember some of those you are trying not to get dropped by may have been at it for quite a few years.  You'll get there just be patient.

As for the trainer, I can tell you my wife used mine last year along with some workouts from a book called "The heart rate monitor book for cyclists" and I can attest to the major improvement in her abilty, both just biking and uphill.  Her recovery on climbs was the most amazing part.  you might find it at a library or cheap book store I think it's been out for  while.  The workouts don't seem to be that much and even my wife doubted there ability to improve her, then she started riding in the spring and WOW!!! I'd give it a try.

maxv, Looks like some nice rides to start out your season!  We have a few left to do yet here before the weather gets too cold.

The first is one this weekend called the "fall-n-leaf", it's in one of the hillier regions near us and has some great cookies.  65 miles of hills to work off the extra calories and the scenery is nice too!

the other is my clubs ride, called the "Red Flannel", it is concidered the last ride of the year on the local cycling calendar and if the weather is good we get quite a turnout.

No problem with shameless plug, but I'm a tad parnoid about the internet so how about if I just donate to one of the local MS rides in your honor.

So what bring you to CC, I got started here way back, lost about 45 pounds at the time and have gained some back, but I think I went a little too far. I was down to 138 pounds from 185 now I'm around 150 or so.  Did wonders for my uphill performance though.

Well, I guess it's off to do some riding before dinner, see ya DAN

maxv,

Welcome, I'm In Ohio, USA so I'm getting ready for winter and you are getting ready for summer, you'll be getting all the great rides in while we sit around and get fat.  Be nice to hear some ride reports from the other side of the world during the cold winter.

I do mostly road riding but recently started mountain biking too!  My son talked me into it and so far it's been a blast (except for the two broken ribs).  We have several trails very close to us and one is 24 miles long around 50k, I think, and it is awesome.

My wife rides also, and although I'm a bit partial, she is pretty awesome on a bike.  She's done 5100 miles this year and I am about to finish a 10,000 mile challenge (9755 miles done with 245 to go)

I do some small citizen races, mostly road races, as crits scare the hell out of me. I have a trek 5000 and a 1200. guy in my club just bought a colnago (don't know which one) it should be in soon! Those bikes are just flat out beautiful.

As for track riding, there a isn't velodrome within 500 miles of me that I know of, would be fun to ride one though.

Well, enough for now, so how's about you/ get any nice rides in lately.  I did 111 miles yesterday so today I'm sitting around doing the recovery thing.

panda, nice to hear you are back at it, hope all is well.

cold weather riding is really kinda enjoyable as long as you got the gear.  I have found that as long as your feet and hands stay warm, you don't seem to mind the cold on the rest of you.

behanna, I try not to ride wnen the roads are too wet, it is surprising how fast they dry out really.

I will just wipe the dust off after most rides and I haven't noticed any problems so far.

another good idea is just go out and buy a cheap old garage sale bike and putr some 28's on it and go..

BTW, hope you heal up real soon, the dirty dozen is just around the corner!!

Hi everyone!  well here in Ohio the leaves are  starting to change but it doen't feel much like fall, the temp was 85 yesterday and possible 90 today.

Me and the wife got in a beautiful 90 miles yesterday and are on for 50 or 60 more today.  I have 9700 miles in now and the wife is over 5000.

As for riding in cool weather, look into getting leg and arm warmers to help on cool mornings. They're nice because as the day warms up you can easily remove them and put them in your bike bag or jersey pocket.  We ride all year long, only stop when the roads are icey. I have ridden in temps as low as 10 degrees.

Looking forward to cooler  weather and the changing of the leaves, we have a very pretty ride this comming weekend through central Ohio called the "Fall-n-leaf" and it has some of the best cookies!!

Hope everyone gets in some good riding, DAN

panda, glad to hear you are OK!!  I crashed on my moutain bike a few weeks ago and also got a clean bill of health from my doctor.  Just some bad bruising of my ribs and no internal damage.

Jane, proper fueling is everything in endurance sports!

Well, had a real bad day on sunday riding, it was everything I had just to get back to my car.  Sure glad my wife was along to keep me company in my misery.  Just the effects of pushing my body to hard, too may days in a row and it said enough is enough.  couple days rest ought to straighten me back out.

so far I'm at 9300 miles, as my son said "just 7 centuries to go!"  Can't wait to get this over with.  BTW I figured I have spent around 600 hours on my bike this year, that is 25 straight days or almost 10% of the year sitting on a bike and I wonder why I'm so tired.

See ya all later, DAN

panda, If everything is working, then you just change the flat and get on your way.  If there is noises or damage to your rim have it looked at.

Usually a bike can take a pretty good hit and be OK. I know I have had more than my share of crashes.

however, keep this in mind, if there is damage to the frame, steel(no problem), aluminum(get it checked), carbon(it is now scrape). No kidding, any crack in carbon can be a potential dangerous problem!!  Aluminum can as well, but has to be pretty bad to warrent throwing it away.

I had two flats this week, what a pain!

Well, let me tell you my little story,

Couple years ago we are visiting this town and there is a nice trail there so I take my bike along to ride it.

Well along the way about 10 mile from anything, a bee flies into my mouth and stings the back of my throut, OOOOWWW!!!!!  There is no one around, the only thing that probably saved me was that I have no allergic reaction to stings.  If I had I can only imagine the headline in the news;  man found dead on bike trail no sign of foul play.

I can tell you one thing it hurt, alot and I had to ride 25 miles back to where I started, Oh and this was before we had any cell phones.

Ohio45, glad you had a good ride!  I think my comment on the rough trail comes from the ones I ride, We have the northcoast inland trail near my house and it is really smooth by comparison. Don't know why that trail has the riders going side to side, maybe just to see if your paying attention, LOL!

BTW, if you go to www.ohiocycling.info click on rider resourses and then click on the ODOT link, it will open a page that is from the Ohio department of transportation, click on the map in the uppper right corner and it will open an interactive map of all the trails in Ohio. I know there are some nice ones a lot closer to you!

Some I would suggest are kiksong (sic) gap in Mount Vernon, B&O in mansfield, greenway trail in youngstown, and of course you have to ride the Ohio and Erie canal trail in the National park(the best place to go for that one is in Peninsula) it is a limestone trail but is very well packed.  It's really impressive to see how many trails we have in Ohio and we (my family) have ridden about half of them.

ohio45, Sounds like you are going on the millersburg to fredricktown trail, just a info, it is a little rough because of the buggy's and horses but very doable and a nice trail otherwise!

jc, congrate on the century, way to hang in there. My son was suppose to do his first century last weekend but the rain prvented us from going. we'll try agian at a later time.

mlb, hve fun on the club ride, they are a great way to learn more about cycling. Have fun!

Hi fellow cyclists, how is everyone these days?

Just stopping by to say HI and give a little update of things.  I see the thread is still going strong, I'm glad of that.

My 10,000 mile challenge stands at 8500 miles so far, looks like I should make it by November at the latest, I'll tell you one thing that is a long time to spend on a bike!! LOL My current average is 35 miles a day.

As I posted a while ago i took up mountain biking too and it's a blast, but I had my first real good crash and am healing up at the monent, (fell off a bridge and slammed my handlebars into my chest, OUCH!!), still riding the road bike but boy it hurts to breath deep, gee can't imagine why? LOL!!!

Ohio45, where in Ohio do you live, I'm from Elyria, Ohio and Autismjtm is from Medina!!

Jane, So how is the Ice at Arby's still having problems with it being frozen, LOL!!  Hope the political stuff is going OK for you!

Well everyone have a good weekend and keep on riding,

Jane, was this guy with one leg kinda skinny and his skin, for lack of a better word, brown and scared looking?

The resaon I ask is one of our members is a one legged cyclist named Ron and he is a very very good rider. It would be like him to approach someone like you, he is very out going and freindly and loves cycling.

I think that would be in the small world catagory if it is him, I will be seeing him this weekend at a ride I'm doing from apple creek to Charm down through amish country and I will have to ask him.

Hi everyone, like I said I'll pop in from time to time!

Latest news is that I went out and bought a mountain bike, found that Ohio has some pretty epic trails for a mostly flat state.  Mohican state park has a 24 mile one and mohican wilderness has one as well, lots of climbing on both.  lot's of the state parks have trails for mountain biking and they are challenging.  I'm having a blast with it, nothing like having a bunch of trees in your way to improve your bike skills, LOL.

My son has really got into biking as well now, he's put in around 600 miles this summer.  My wife had over 1000 miles last month and she still countinues to impress me with her ability.

Me and the wife went on a really beutiful ride one weekend that involved 75 miles each day and an overnight at a real nice hotel, the scenery was magnificant and the food was great.  We did around 5000 ft of climbing each day and one of the hills had to be the steepest I've ever seen in Ohio.

Well just want to drop by and say HI to you all, tell next time.

I will try and drop by now and then and see what's up but who knows.

Because the original post was made by me it won't get updated anymore, sorry.

I have enjoyed your company here and I hope that you and others carry on in the future, good luck with your riding and weight loss goals.

BTW in the 10000 mile personel challenge I have crossed the 7000 mile point and barring injury should make 10000 by the end of OCT.

Well here's what happened, Me and my daughter (16) desided to ride to a local donut shop in a nearby city (about 10 miles) it reguires us to ride on some rather busy streets, so I told her to lead and i would follow (this way I could watch traffic)

On one particular street we approached a bend in the road (about 90 degree left, double yellow line, no berm, and narrow) I was about 1foot to her left. A car came up behind and beeped at us, I could tell it was a cop by the horn, I stayed where I was and the guy passed us on the curve (oh it's a blind curve no less) so after he passed I pointed down at the double yellow line and shrugged my shoulders as if to say "what gives" well he immediatly turned on his lights and pulled over,

As I rode up I asked him why he passed us and then he told us we where blocking traffic so he was going to cite us, so I asked again why he passed in a no passing zone and told him that I was allowed by law to be where I was to protect myself and my daughter, of course he disagreed (BTW he never did explain his endangering us by passing), he said I was reguired to ride on the right berm and I told him he was incorrect, that we only had to ride as far right as was safe and practical, and that that section of road was neither safe nor practical and I was only protecting us, he said this time he would let it go but that if we rode more to the right trakkic could pass safely, I told him that that wasn't true and had been near missed several times by people trying to squeeze by when I did that.

I knew I was going to lose so I stopped arguing with him, figured if I keep it up he'd cite us for sure, My daughter thinks he backed down because he knew I was right. Who knows, but he drove away.

So I come home and look up the state laws and he was dead wrong, here is what it says 4511.25 slow moving vehicles must remain far enough right to allow others to pass if passing is safe and reasonable.  Also operators of slow moving vehicles are not required to compromise their safety in order to allow a faster vehicle to pass.

in another section of the law 4511.31 it states,  faster vehicles may pass as long as the faster vehicle is capapble of passing without exceeding the speed limit and as long as there is sufficient space in which to do so.  He had neither, and had a motorcylce been coming the other way he would have hit them!!

So jane you are not the only one with a patrolmen to look out for now!

More later, DAN
