Health & Support Pregnisone weight gain Jun 03 2008

I was on prednisone for a year, and in 6 months I had gained 100lbs.  It is not all water--prednisone affects your metabolism, your energy, and I hate to tell you this, but it makes you ravenously hungry.  I would wake up at night, and the hunger pangs would be so bad it would physically hurt.  Make sure you eat small meals evey two to three hours, eat LOTS of fiber and drink LOTS of water.  I grind up flax seed in a coffee grinder and mix it with a little cinnamon and splenda; then I section an apple and shake it up--it is sooo good and a nice way to get about 15 gr of fiber in one sitting!  You can't just not eat, because prednisone will make you hold on to weight.  Good luck--I had mono too, and it is no fun.  I do hope you feel better, and enjoy your prom.

ok, I am married to a runner, and I want  to run too.  However, I have one pronated foot (due to an injury), therefore, one side of my body is off kilter.

BUT, after reading all of your posts, I am determined to make a start--tonigh!  I can run/walk for 10 minutes and increase my times.  My only concern is a muscle in my back, which is agonizing because of my foot injury.  I am setting a goal to run the 5K at the Gate River Run in Jax, FL next March--who knows?

All I can say is that every one of your posts inspired me.  Thanks!

You can also add me--I am impressed with your weight loss so far---how are you doing it?

I have also followed the thread on fucothin, and I have decided to try it.  I am not an advocate of "diet pills", but I am going to add Juice Plus whole foods (mostly for my 10 year old daughter who makes bad food choices), and the fucothin because although I'm doing everything right, I am having a very hard time losing weight.

Congrats on the engagement, I wish you many years of happiness and healthiness! debbie

oh yes, I have stopped eating anything that comes in a box (except for no sugar added fudgsicles and kashi vive cereal!!!!)  Nothing that comes in a bag (like chips--even baked or light)  for crunch, I eat celery and carrots.  I wedge an apple every day and shake it up in a baggie with 2T ground flax seed, some cinnamon and some splenda.  It tastes like a crunchy apple pie!!!!  I am getting away from processed food altogether!  I do feel so much better for this too!

i'm definitely not an expert, but one thing I have learned from using this site and from reading the book "The Biggest Loser", based on the tv show, is that all calories are not equal.  Your body absorbs some things faster than others.

I didn't have much luck when I first started either but, every day, I would check my analysis, and I learned that I could improve some on my percentages.  Then, when I got into the book, they have a pyramid (not too unlike the FDA food pyramid) and I realized that I was ingesting too many calories from processed foods like cereal, meal replacement bars, energy bars, etc.  I was even eating too many nuts and that type of thing.  And, the Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones, etc, have more sodium than you should have.

Since I have begun making a few changes such as the things I mentioned above, I have notice my energy levels soar, and I no longer need any kind of appetite suppressant.  I eat 6X a day, and vary my calories anywhere from 1200-1700 per day (just to keep the body and metabolism guessing and WORKING)   I don't like exercise either, but as my energy has increased, I find myself more willing to MOVE.  I really enjoy riding my bike, and am looking forward to a nice 20 mile ride tomorrow.

Use this website and all it has to offer--you will learn so much about nutrition.

I ordered my biggest loser book from amazon, and found some for 1.92 per book plus s&h.  It ended up costing me 6 bucks.  They also have it in public libraries too.  good luck to you!

Weight Loss Are you serious?! May 02 2008

hi, all, I saw that show too--they were not promoting the HCG diet, they were just presenting information.  they had two doctors on the show who gave the opinion that it was not a good thing.

HCG is not a post-pregnancy hormone, it is THE pregnancy hormone.  That is the hormone that the pregnancy tests will pick up to tell you if you are or aren't pregnant.  With high hcg, your body does not absorb the calories as much, they go to the fetus.  Since there is no fetus, you expel them....

I think both hosts of the show said it was something they would never try.

tulatoola, it looks like you are really serious about this, so I think you will do well.  I'm not sure 1200 calories is enough, not knowing your stats.  I do know that when you don't eat enough, your weight loss slows down.  And, any movement is better than none at all, and you can burn alot of calories by working around your house.

Most people here are very supportive and helpful.  I don't think bobs meant any harm in his comment.  40 calories over today did not hurt you at all.  I know  how you feel--I hate to go over too, but really and truly, 40 calories really are negligible.  Don't beat yourself up over it, and remember tomorrow is a new day.  I went over today too, and by way more than you.  And I know that I won't make the same mistake tomorrow.  Plus, it is a good thing to fluctuate your calorie intake: high, high, low, medium, low, high, etc.  As long as you keep up with what you should have weekly and don't go over that, you are doing well.  Good luck to you, Debbie

I always eat between 35-50gr of fiber (both kinds) a day.  I have similar problems, to my amazement.  I drink plenty and eat plenty of fruits and veggies each day too, although i do  get some of my fiber from flax seed that I grind in a coffee grinder and put into a slimfast shake, along with some flax seed oil.  I do this almost every day.  I have some probiotic cereal--I think I'll have a little snack of it before bed tonight.  I have also heard that warm drinks in the morning help, however I'm not a coffee drinker, and very hot natured, which makes it hard to drink hot chocolate/tea, etc since i live in FL....

thanks, longwaytogo--i have added my activity points to the burn meter, but i have decided not to let that affect the way i calculate calories--in other words, i'm not counting them.

i did the 30 day shred two days last week, but i have a foot injury that makes my whole right side off kilter, therefore my back was in agony the rest of the week, so i stopped.  my bike was in the shop last week, but i got it back today and tonight after dinner, i did a short 5 mile sprint--avg about 15mph.

i have also been studying my analysis of my daily grade and am trying to make some small changes in my percentages and sodium intake.  i have been eating about 40gr fiber for a month now, and have not really seen any difference from that and am curious as to why.  today my final calorie count was 1378 (after a weekend of high numbers--i really cheated yesterday and ate lots of chocolate....)  my final burn will be around 2758, and this is the biggest deficit i've ever had.  i will eat at least 1500 calories tomorrow.  we will see how this week goes.  thanks for the encouragement.

to all the newbies--welcome and good luck!!!  i'd love to buddy with anyone wanting to lose about 120lbs.  take care!

I am here, too, though I stopped posting on the other thread, I kept reading.  I hought I'd have a better week than I did this week, I gained 2 in spite of doing the 30 day shred.  bummer, and I really mean I'm bummed about it.  I have not cheat veered from my program though--I have kept count of every calorie that goes in.  I don't think I'm going to count activity calories anymore and see what happens.   Hope everyone else has a better WI than I did!

Fitness Jillian Michaels 30 DAY SHRED Anyone???? Apr 16 2008

melissa, I am on my second day with the dvd--I hate to exercise, but I am trying to do this--I have not mastered it like gingerkabureck,  but I worked all the way through the first workout.  I am tired (which is why I am online), but I am going to see it through.  I figure if it helps me it is worth the 30 minutes of torture!!!  (only torture because I hate exercise--maybe I'll learn to love it).

Seriously, it is worth the time and the money.  I truly am hoping that I will be able to work my way all the way through the 3rd and hardest workout.

Weight Loss Trying to Lose Apr 15 2008
01:52 (UTC)

mizzouing--8lbs should not be too hard for you to lose,  and for a while at least, you need to cut at least half to 3/4 of your after dinner eating out.  Try to get it in earlier in the day.  I know it's hard--I eat every 3 hours, but after dinner at night, no matter how late I stay up, I don't eat ANYTHING.   I fluctuate my calories anywhere from 1400 to 2100 (I eat a different total every day).

Put some healthy snacks in baggies and keep them in your purse/backpack or whatever.  During the day (even at school), have something to eat every 2-3 hours.  Don't eat more than 6 times in a day, so try to get all your calories in those six meals.   If you have to have a snack at night,  make it a small one.

You might also want to incorporate green tea into your day, either by drinking it or buying the capsules.  I think it has really helped me.  Good luck, and keep in touch, Debbie

Hi, supernan1414, I was just wondering if you exercise?  I have been going back and forth about when I want to add exercise--I hate it.  I  lost 2lbs last week (I increased my calories).  Before that, I have been counting since the first of March and had only lost about 4lbs.  I just ordered the Jillian Michaels 30day shred dvd, and I plan to start it this week...if I have to!!!Thanks, Debbie

Hi, everyone, I posted yesterday that I had my WI and was down almost a pound.  Well, for some reason I weighed again this morning and was down another 1.3 lbs!!!!!  I was amazed!  I am going to try to fluctuate my calories this week again, and as soon as my Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred dvd comes, I will start that.  I didn't even exercise at all last week, that's why this weight loss was so incredible.

Good going, Longwaytogo--a 3.4lb loss in a week is a great encouragement!

Hey, everyone--I had my WI this morning and was down 1 lb--that puts me at

270.5.   I wasn't expecting a loss at all, because I had two days with over 2000 calories.  I guess there is some merit to varying your calorie intake a little over the week.

the bicycle rollers sound very interesting.  My husband and I have discussed purchasing something like that, your bike fits onto it, but I don't think it's the same thing--I don't think you have to balance yourself or worry about riding off of it!!  They cost about 200dollars, but if you will really use it, it's well worth the cost.

Calorie Count tagging Apr 11 2008
20:48 (UTC)

Carol, you should be able to click on you Logs.  Above that, you will see a small tool bar and it should say 'tagged items'.  When you click on that, you should see a list of your tagged items.  Unless you didn't actually tag them.  When you tag a food, you have to give it a tag, and it should prompt you to do so.

Sorry you are having trouble.  Good luck

thanks, for the encouragement.  Actually, I do ride, and it doesn't bother me to ride 30 miles--my husband says I need to do intervals, and I can tell it really gets my heart rate up.  With gas prices so high, I'm not driving out to our bike trail to ride anymore, but taking shorter, interval type rides around my neighborhood.  Thanks again!!!

I want to join this thread--I am not doing well--I HATE HATE HATE to exercise--I know I need to  and I am going to try.

I have had a very bad 2 days--eaten at the high end of my calorie limit.  Today, I ended up with 2000 plus calories.  (I think it was emotional eating--upset with husband  over stupid stuff....)

Here are my stats:

SW: 276

CW: 271

GW: 148

I am totally overwhelmed at the amount of weight I have to lose.  My husband has lost over 50lbs, but he runs and loves it.  I have one pronated foot and it makes even walking painful on my whole right side.  But I am determined to join you all and be very positive that I am going to lose this weight.  We must do it together....

Health & Support Bloating & constipated..too much fibre? Apr 09 2008

It is my understanding that you need about 35gr of fiber in order to lose the weight.  I am doing the 3 hour diet (Jorge Cruise) and he recommends that  you use flax.  I put 2tb ground flax seed into my protein shakes, or dip apples into it (not bad!).  I also put flax seed oil into my shakes.  It's a great source of the omega's that we so badly need.   I think you should slightly decrease your fiber intake and give it a few days, and then gradually increase.  I had the same problems, and I am doing great now.  Good luck to you.
