| Weight Loss | At what rate should I lose weight? | Mar 05 2009 16:52 (UTC) |

Original Post by tealpenguin326: I am completely aware of the difference between BMR and RMR. As you can see in the original post she stated that her BMR is 2000, not her RMR. That is why I stated her BMR is 1516. I made no claim to what her RMR is. That would depend on her activity level. (See Harris Benedict Equation) I simply calculated her numbers as if she was sedentary and logged workouts separately as an example. (If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2). This deturmines your total daily calorie needs. To read more about BMR and how it is calculated (without getting in to details regarding the specific mathematical formula) visit this site = http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ Also, I think it is crazy to NOT want to offer help. That is why we are all here, right? I never said I had the only correct way or that I knew everything. I don't. I was simply offering suggestions based on my education. I have had very successful weight loss and have helped tons of clients reach their goal weight based on the way I calculated deficits. That may or may not work for everyone. In my opinion you should seek help from all different kinds of people with all different types of experiences. Then, find what works for you. Once again, tealpenguin = GOOD LUCK! |

Hi, Here ya go. :) Let me know if you have any more questions. ~Julie BMR (amount you would burn in a coma) = 1516 calories Calorie amount to maintain current weight (assuming you are sedentary and then log workouts separately) = 1819 calories If you eat 1700 calories per day you would have a diet deficit of 119 calories (833 calories per week) and you would lose .24 lbs a week with diet alone. To lose up to 1 lbs per week you need a 3500 calorie deficit. If you eat 1700 calories you need to burn an additional 534 calories 5 days per week though exercise. (5 days on and 2 rest days). *Losing weight is most effective through a combination of diet and exercise. This way you retain more muscle and more burn fat. SUMMARY = Eat 1700 calories per day (creating a 833 calorie diet deficit per week) Burn 534 calories per workout 5 days per week (creating a 2670 calorie workout deficit per week. A 833 calorie diet deficit PLUS a 2670 calorie workout deficit = 3500 calories or 1 pound of fat lost per week. GOOD LUCK!! :) Julie |

Hello :) Based on the fact that you are female, 16, 5'5 and 145 lbs I calculate your BMR at 1516. I think your math might be a little off. You need to take your BMR, multiply it by an activity factor and then subtract your workouts and calories eaten to find out your deficit. I am a personal trainer so I have a TON of experience calculating deficits. I'll calculate your numbers below. :) Let me know if you want any more help. Julie |

| Weight Loss | Protein/Carb intake??? | Sep 12 2008 17:55 (UTC) |

Info I have found in my NASM studies: Endurance athletes and avid gym goers should eat 60% of their diet from carbs, but the average person should at 50-70% of their diets from carbs. Wow, right? I used to eat 50% at most, but recently upped my carbs to about 60%. Carbohydrates activate protein syntheses and if you do not get enough carbs to replenish your glycogen stores then your body uses protein for quick energy, hence burning muscle and not fat. Of course I am talking about complex carbs, not simple ones... The best way to provide the diet with complex carbohydrates is to consume foods in their most natural state such as oatmeal, bran and brown rice. (Bran, Wheatgerm, Barley, Maize, Buckwheat,Cornmeal,Oatmeal) The food list below shows good sources of complex carbohydrates: Pasta Aim for similar servings of high carbohydrate foods: 6 servings of grain & cereal foods such as bread, pasta, and rice (preferably wholegrain, high fiber types) Hope that helps :) |

| Weight Loss | Does anyone know how many calories are burned.... | Jul 28 2008 22:51 (UTC) |
|
Original Post by love-bears-all: Actually I completely agree with Nakedsoul. I have a Polar F-6 HRM that I wear during all of my workouts including swimming. I keep track of the numbers very closely. For me and according to my HRM walking for 1 hour burns much more than swimming. Here are some of the stats I recently recorded from my heart rate monitor = (You might burn more or less depending on age and weight. ) Lake open water lap swimming for 60 minutes = 290 calories burned Lap swimming in a pool for 45 minutes = 214 calories burned Swim 52 laps in a pool (44 reg, 8 kickboard) 58 min = 340 calories burned Walking 60 minutes = 400 calories burned. *Those numbers are with swimming hard core laps or distance. Walking in water would be less. I was shocked and disappointed to find that swimming burns so few calories but it does.... Hope that helps. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I do want to workout legs with weights... the problem is that my legs are spent from all the cardio I do. I swear, all week I am almost too sore to walk up the stairs without extreme soreness. It seams like my legs are never not sore. Also, I always stretch before and mostly after which is supposed to help with soreness. Any other ideas?? |

incline press...Thanks. I will check into it. Also, I think it is important to add that I do NOT want to do any trap specific exercises. My traps are HUGE for a girl and I hold a lot of tension there. I think they got really big from swimming or water skiing.... Anyways, thanks and keep the info coming! :) |

| Fitness | The elusive female 6-pack | Jul 12 2008 00:52 (UTC) |

Thanks for the info melkor! I am very close to my goal weight and can see abs... does a 6 pack show? Not quite, lol. Eventhough I do not want to lose much more weight I would like to lose fat and gain muscle. I guess 5-7% is ok for some women (extreme) so each person has to find their own comfortable range. I would like to have a baby in the near future so anything under 18% is a bad idea for me from what I heard. Thanks again for the info. I would have thought Jessica Simpson's bf% is more... who really knows? |

| Fitness | Strength training or Calorie Deficit or both? What should I do? | Jul 11 2008 22:18 (UTC) |

I am almost at my goal weight too (.9 lbs away). I do cardio and lift weights but now that I am so close to my goal I have a smaller calorie deficit each day (300 calories or so). I am finding it to work rather well. Strength training will really help you tone and lose the fat. |

I would LOVE to have a 6 pack but I was told this by several people and did some research of my own... To have a 6 pack showing I would need to have around 14% body fat. The healthy body fat % for a woman is 25-18%. This is a problem right for women who strive for a 6 pack. If I have a 6 pack I am not at a healthy body fat %. I would rather be healthy than have a 6 pack. |

At 5'4 and 120 lbs you should not be trying to lose weight. Maybe try simply toning and lifting weights at this point? |

| Weight Loss | Proteine shakes... helps to lose weight? | Jul 11 2008 22:02 (UTC) |

I take whey protein every day and also eat protein bars everyday. The one I use also has only 90 calories, 16 grams of protein and 1.5 grams of fat. I take them because I lift weights and do not get enough in my diet (I am a vegetarian). I shoot for eating 50% carbs / 20% protein / 30% fat. To get even close to 20% protein I must eat protein powder. :) Plus, the coco bean flavor is pretty good! |

| Weight Loss | not eating enough | Jul 11 2008 21:51 (UTC) |
|
If you are still currently "adicted to exercise" like your profile says, 1300 calories is still not enough. Maybe you are not feeling hungry because your metabolism has slowed down from not eating enough calories... if you force yourself to eat more (I agree with -colorblind-, eat almonds, peanut butter, butter, olive oil, etc to gain calories) maybe your metabolism will speed back up and you will become hungry. |

Had to add this one!! My very favorite smoothie (so far) "Maui drink in a pineapple" = Put all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. The amounts of ingredients are NOT exact, but the below measurements make a good amount for 1 person. No matter how you make it, it's healthy (unless you add lots of ice cream!!) Add more or less ice to change texture from smoothie to slushy. Add more ice cream or frozen yogurt to make it milkshake like. Add more almond breeze if you need more liquid to mix. Do not add too much more fruit unless you like it very sweet. 8 oz Vanilla - Almond Breeze Unsweetened [40 cals, 3gm fat] ENJOY!!! :) |

Here is a link to some yummy looking 'Hungry Girl' smoothie drinks... the only bad thing is that you have to buy their special syrups. Maybe people have ideas for syrup substitutions? I agree with tmck99! The harder I workout the harder it is for me to lose weight... but when I add in rest days the pounds come off. I think I was working out and pushing it too hard without eating back enough calories. Also, getting a heart rate monitor is a great idea (if you do not have one) so you will know exactly how many calories you are burning. :) |

Here is the Mayo Clinic's basic recommendations for teens' nutrition, which is different than that of adults. As you can see you need 2200-3200 calories to maintain weight. If you are going to drop calories to lose weight I would not go below 1800-2000 calories... just make sure you are eating the right kind of calories such as the right amounts of carbs, protein and fat. Boys ages 14 to 18 Calories 2,200 to 3,200; could be greater depending on age, growth and activity level Protein 10% to 30% of daily calories Carbohydrates 45% to 65% of daily calories (at least 130 grams) Total fat 25% to 35% of daily calories Sodium 1,500 milligrams a day Fiber 38 grams a day Calcium 1,300 milligrams a day |

| Weight Loss | Weight fluctuation | Jul 01 2008 22:04 (UTC) |
|
| That is perfectly normal. Our weight fluctuates due to many factors, including how much food you have in you and how much water you have in you (you can retain water for all kinds of reasons). Everyone's weight fluctuates as much as 5 or 6 pounds or so throughout any given day (ONE day). It's due primarily to hydration level, but also things like how much food is in your digestive tract (when did you eat and go to the bathroom last, etc). The best thing you can do is weighing yourself at the same time and under the same conditions every day. First thing in the morning, after bathroom, before eating, for example. Hope that helps! :) | |||

You asked, "Just wanted to know if this is right?" well it is not. I would be ok for an adult but not a growing teen. You need to eat more!! As a growing teen that is not nearly enough calories to stay healthy. Eat more and add in a bit of weight training to drop the lbs of fat. |

If losing 20-30 more pounds still puts you in a healthy weight range for your height then go for it. Your health and happiness matter more than anything else. If you love you then he will love you too... or he is not right for you. If losing 20-30 pounds puts you underweight then you have a problem and should listen to your bf. |
