Fitness Running = Migraine? Nov 03 2009

Perhaps it is the tension you are holding in your neck when you run. Do you find that you clench or hold your arms or shoulders tightly as you are running? I used to have the tendency to hold my hands in fists and seemed to pull up on my shoulders while running on the treadmill, causing a lot of tension in my neck, until my trainer caught me and set me straight. As any yoga instructor would also tell you, we also hold alot of tension in our jaw. Clenched teeth when trying to get through a workout could cause tension build up and headaches also. Try some yoga perhaps directly after or pay more attention to how your arms/shoulders/upper body is handled as you run in addition to your lower body.

As a poor 20-something I eat more english muffin pizzas than anyone I know.

Low fat english muffins, spagetti sauce, part skim mozzarella

pizza craving - check, low fat - check, vegetarian - check

I also eat a good amount of soup, salads, fruit from the market instead of the grocery store, potatoes made any which way, and eggs as they are cheap and easy for a person on a time budget as well as a money budget.

Luckily my apartment is so small (and I live there with my boyfriend) that we don't tend to have people over very much so I have no need to be cooking for the masses.

I love it and I'm only on day 3! I started last week and then decided to start over after a particularly busy week/weekend stopped me from sticking to it. I am not doing the meal plan (just eating healthy foods and staying in a comfortable calorie range and majorly cutting back on the alcohol) but my stomach feels tighter already! I have little to no upper body strength right now...so I find all the push ups really challenging but I just modify and keep trying. I'm excited to get myself in fantastic physical condition. Congrats on the half way point!

I also get this and tended to just run through it for the most part. Stepping aside and stretching out for a few minutes with a few deep breaths seemed to help. I also don't drink water while running as it causes it for me also elen. I usually eat a small snack before running though (granola bar or a small bowl of cereal) and this has seemed to help also.

But strapless. I can't find the exact dress. For whatever reason the store doesn't have it on their website and even the designer doesn't have it on their website. go figure.

Your boyfriend finds you attractive and sexy or he wouldnt be with you for 3.5 years. Confidence, no matter what size, height, weight, or age is hands down the most attractive thing in a person.

No matter how thin or attractive you can get from eating right and working out you won't be happy with yourself until you stop comparing yourself to other people. There will always be someone taller, thinner, and more beautiful than you. Any woman, despite what she claims, will notice that woman and maybe feel longing but as the wonderful Dr. Seuss said "You are you and now isn't that pleasant!"  You have been given one life, don't spend it mulling around wishing you were someone else. When I see those girls I do a little self motivation by just reminding myself of all the wonderful things about ME. It sounds stupid but say some happy things out loud about your own life, it's a great way to get your mind off of other people and refocus on YOU and your goals.

That being said the goal here is health. Yes it helps to lose weight within that but ideally you shouldnt give up because you want to be healthy and feel good and have energy and not have diabetes, and joint problems, and the slew of other risks that come with being overweight. You are ONLY 21. You have a lifetime ahead of you and if you start to reverse bad habits now it will be that much easier to retain them when you are older. Please don't give up. Skin is  stretchy when you're young. It will be so much easier for you to lose it now than to wake up 20 years from now still unhappy with yourself and have to put in twice the effort for half of the result.

I went to school for English and became an editor with absolute certainty that this is what I would do for the rest of my life. I happened to fall into medical editing because it turns out that editing for publishing companies is extremely competitive and pays squat.

I expected to be bored out of my mind and move on to something else when the opportunity came about.

Turns out I fell in love with medicine and want away with the entire corporate office desk world.

Three years later I'm finally starting pre-requisites for nursing school. Hurray!

I do exercise videos that are on my On Demand cable. I run outside, and I buy some other random work out videos for cheap on sites like amazon or half.com so you can get a good workout and don't need to break the bank.

This is also good for rainy days when you have every excuse under the sun not to work out and don't want to walk or drive to the gym. Having even 1 exercise dvd in your home = no excuse. I used to take dance classes multiple times a week but it was way too expensive. I bought a couple of dance dvd's instead (but bought ones above my skill level) so I was still always working towards something and didn't get bored.

Some other fun stuff:

Look for a rock climbing gym in your area

Go hiking

Run up and down a flight of stairs a few times

Run bleachers at your schools stadium, baseball field, etc. (serious workout)

Well,

On the weekend I want to drink. And I think I deserve it after a hard hard week of working. Everything in moderation. I like to drink good dark beer. Tonight when I went out drinking I started with light beer so that I wouldnt drink dark beer after beer after beer. Instead of binging on crap food I got mussels and clams instead. They added barely any calories onto my days meals. Still went over in cals of course (usually at 1200 and had about 1800) because of the drinking but I feel better about myself for not running home and eating a quesadilla or pizza or some other such thing because I opted for eating healthier food right away. On a normal drinking night I end up well over 2000 calories and I beat myself up for it. Tonight is the first night I didn't do that. Go me! I also did some cardio today (not as much as normal but every little bit counts) so that bought me some extras. Such a process this lifestyle.

Motivation Ways to avoid eating because you're stressed? Mar 13 2008

I do the exact same thing and I've also been eating a lot lately because of stress...and drinking a lot too. I don't know how qualified I am to be giving advice based on the fact that I do it too but try and channel your stress into your workouts rather than into food. When you get particularly anxious go for a run or if this isn't possible (at work or busy or whatever) then try and do some simple stretches and take some deep breaths to calm yourself down rather than turning to food. Essentially I think we eat when we are stressed because it turns our minds to the taste and the smell rather than anything else going on in our lives. We just have to reroute it again and not give into the temptation. Try drinking a cup of flavorful tea or flavored water instead. Maybe try chewing gum? If you absolutely can't stop yourself from eating try eating grapes or strawberries or something that you can pick at and eat a good amount of while your mind wanders without loading on the calories. Most of all, take some time for yourself. You've obviously got a lot on your plate right now. If you ruin your health you won't be able to help anyone. Take even 5 minutes of your day to do something you really want to do (this is so stupid but I love to dance and it relieves stress for me so if I'm super stressed I take 5 minutes, put on a good song, shut my door, and dance around and sing into my hairbrush, even on days when I have to force myself to do it and act goofy and even on days when I'd rather cry than dance to a song in my underwear it inevitably makes me feel better and see the lighter side of things)

So much fun! My brother has this on the wii and we are both addicted to it. He was so embarrassed at first to like it. He's 26 and just like the ultimate man's man and he's prancing around doing maracas. Honestly I think you probably lose another 200 calories just laughing so much. My arms were so sore after!!

Fat free popcorn or Hummus on Ryvita Rye Crispbread. I also eat a lot of fruit when snacking but I wouldn't call it filling. Yogurt and banana is probably my favorite though.

I'm in! I'm also really petite and feel you on it being extremely noticeable when you gain the smallest amount of weight. I also just started new bc too. And it's killlinnggg me. I've gained like 10 pounds from it, and dropped 5 through psychotic healthy eating and working out. I'm trying to get to like 107/108 which is about where I look healthy and yet still skinny enough to fit into my clothing and look good.

Foods Soup without the salt? Mar 01 2008

also...just as an fyi I've been a dancer for a long time and my dance teachers and trainers always told me stay away from the salt, that little belly pouch we all get...mostly due to salt. I was really really surprised to see how much my stomach flattened out after I finally started listening to them and stopped eating so much salt. About 2,500 to 3,000 mg a day is normal given that almost everything we eat has sodium in it, I try to keep it around 1,000 to 1,500 and it's made a huge difference.

I eat alot of the healthy valley soups with no salt added. You can usually find them at any store that sells organic stuff. The potato leek is good. It will taste REALLY different from normal soup. Taking away the salt really makes the soup blander. Add some pepper and if you need to a dash of your own salt. It took me awhile to get used to but they are very filling and I think it's worth it to know I'm greatly lowering my sodium intake.
Fitness Gatorade vs. Water Mar 01 2008

I agree with dm8, gatorade and sports drinks are a quick way to get the glucose back that you just worked off but are only necessary for hard exercise lasting more than an hour. They are therefore good to drink right after working out. Sports drinks can rehydrate your body up to 82% whereas water usually stops around 68% and then wastes the rest after a strong workout. Aka it stimulates the need to urinate which you don't want to do if you are mid-game or marathon. The sodium is there to prolong your thirst so that you keep drinking until you're hydrated.

In a nutshell, don't drink gatorade before you work out, the sugar content will  essentially just cause you to crash, but if you sip it every 20 to 30 minutes it keeps restoring the glycogen and provides a steady source of fuel to your muscles. The main purpose is just to keep hydrated. For the average person working out it is just a good way to keep people hydrated who tend not to drink copious amounts of water. It's a flavorful way to stay hydrated.

I love love love James and Chelsea! I think they are truly on it for the experience and that money isn't their main concern or desire. I also feel like James almost really needs that money to get himself started when he is done biking around the US. Seson 2 was my favorite too with Will and Boogy. I saw them on a show on E!! Boogy had a freaking STD (he says since he won BB he has been partying and now owns some clubs in Vegas or something) and Will was the doctor treating his genital wart and freezing it off. So so gross. They were like cracking up about it as if it was the most normal thing in the world to have your best friend freeze off your genital wart on national television. Certainly interesting.

I'm 23 and 5'2" I'm about 115 right now but my normal weight is around 107. (I know this doesn't seem like a big deal but it is not easy for me to drop weight and I'm a very petite person so when I gain weight it shows big time). I stopped dancing and started a new birth control and it's just been gain gain gain. I'm super motivated to get back on track and eat psychotically healthy through the day. I'm also studying to become group fitness certified and I have a good amount of knowledge about how the body works in digesting different foods and what foods may sound ok to eat but are really just fatty thighs waiting to happen. Right now I'm working on drinking less alcohol, staying away from the salt, and trying to keep myself from snacking on cake and cookies and nonsense through the day.

Hoping to find someone who I can exchange work e-mail addresses with and we can be the 'pick me up' when one feels that pull of temptation or complete lack of desire to work out.

Thanks guys!
