To nsgardener, prinz, Michelle

Wow, thank you, all. The info you have all shared is very helpful. I can see I have a lot of learning to do. CC has enable me to determine that my average intake of sugar of the past month has been 39 grams/day. I know that this has vastly improved since I've started with CC.

I feel very fortunate that I have somehow stumbled into the right people, in the right place, at the right time.

Thanks again!

Hi Michelle,

I'd love to join. I have just been informed by my doctor that I am borderline diabetic and border line hypothyroid. My sugar was at 9.7? If I were not dieting and exercising already he would have put  me on medication but because I am already losing he is going to check me again early June. My problem is I know very little about diabetes other than someones sugar levels can either be too high or too low. I have never been one to eat a lot of sugar or drink pop or juice, but I know that certain carbohydrates and starches can be turned into sugar. The diabetes association doesn't really give any daily target #'s for sugar or carbohydrate intake so any help or suggestions anyone can make will be greatly appreciated. I know this will be chasing me forever, but the longer I can stay out of the danger zone the happier I'll be. I'm 40 somthing,  female with approximately 30 lbs to lose.

I'm sorry that you are having such a rough time.  As a student you should be covered under your parents still. Do you have health insurance through the university or extended coverage through your parents? You can either begin with your family Doctor and have him refer you to a counsellor/specialist or go to the clinic on campus and they may be able to give you some options there. If you feel you need support even to get to a doctor it might be best if you start with the clinic at the campus, they may be able to help take the first steps. Please talk to them asap, I am sure they will want to help.

Hope you feel better soon.

It's only been happening recently so I wondered if I've been doing something wrong with my diet or exercise. You've given me a great place to start, I'll have to look into that more on the net.

I love cooking fish in the microwave, it's low cal, quick and delicious. It only takes 3-6 minutes depending on the thickness. I just sprinkle basa  or sole with MRS DASH lemon spices. It tastes awesome!

Fitness Will I lose weight exercising? Mar 29 2008

I was in the same situation a couple of years back. I exercised at the gym 6 days a week over 3 months and didn't lose a lb. I did lose inches but not one ounce of weight. It was very frustrating. Turns out I wasn't eating enough. My metabolism had shut down after years of just eating dinner and then snacking after supper. I turned it around by eating 6 small meals a day and staying within my calorie range. My trainer also told me to exercise every other day, or do cardio one day and strenght training the next.

I'm not sure what you meant by the following...

"Now I am at the gym 5-6 days a week and focus on a balance diet (staying with 200 calories). "  Does this mean you're burning only 200 calories more than what you're  eating?

Health & Support After a night binging ....what should I do? Mar 29 2008

Ok... sorry, just wanted to post a quick reply to what Krisdiet said, don't work out BECAUSE you binged, work out because it is healthy and it will help you on your weight loss goals and make you feel better (from endorphines, like Krisdiet said).

... Stressing yourself into working out after binging could lead to obsessive working out.
I started to do that and had to pull myself out of it very fast before it became a big problem.

Thanks for pointing that out. The last thing I want is to put caro into another unhealthy cycle. Smile

what do u reccommend to eat...to watch cals...i mean we eat hamb. helper alot!:P and hamb. and corn and green beans and stuff like that...but i try to onlyeat like a cup or half a cup ....but it seems like two hours after i eat im hunger again...whats a way to help that...everyone is always saying you just ate but i didnt really eat much when i did eat so i just dont know what to do....im watching cals now and trying to stay at 1500 but its harder for me to get cals .then me going over .....so what foods would u suggest?

If you eat hamburger, try making your own chili. It will be a lot healthier than hamburger helper and with the beans and hamburger it will be more filling. Chicken and fish are actually better for you than the red meat and it can be cheaper if you stick to the recommended 3 oz serving. I always remove the chicken skin before I cook it, too many wasted calories in that. 100% whole wheat breads are good. I also love a low fat cucumber tzatziki sauce that I use as a substitute for mayonaise and sometimes butter.  I can have a toasted tomatoe and cucumber sandwich for lunch for less than 150 calories and its delicious. Raita is also another sauce I like and its only 30 calories per serving as opposed to 70 and 110 for the same amount of others, its a great replace ment for butter on sandwiches. There is also a spritzer salad dressing out there that is only 10 calories for 15 spritz's. No reason not to have a salad with that sandwich. Also look for lower calories cereals. I have MC raisin bran that is loaded with raisins and its a fraction of the calories of some of the other brands and it actually tastes the best of the ones I've tried.  There's nothing wrong with eating when you're hungry again but try to drink some water first. Sometimes we confuse hunger with dehydration. If you're still hungry..eat! It took me awhile to find stuff I like and to start looking at the calorie differences on different products but eventually I built up a good list of foods I like that are lower in calories than others. You'll get there! Have a great day!

Hi caro,

Sorry to hear about how you're feeling, sounds like a very rough cycle. I would suggest some exercise to burn off those extra calories. Not only will it help remove some of the guilt ( therefore breaking the whole "good feeling" followed by "anxiety" cycle) but it will also release endorphines that actually make you feel good and reduce your stress levels.  I know it can be hard to get motivated when you're feeling depressed but I think it will help if you can do it consistantly. You'll probably sleep better too!  Not eating tomorrow will only put you into the starvation cycle again and you will be doomed to returned to binging. Start fresh tomorrow, eat healthy and stick to your correct number of calories.

Hope this helps!

Weight Loss Got a Boyfriend And the eating goes to heck!! :( Mar 27 2008

Wow, it sounds like you are on a really rough cycle. Feeling stuffed and bloated is not a good feeling and you really sound like you don't want to gain the weight back so why do you think you are doing this to yourself?

Until you figure this out and can stop it, try to eat desserts that are low in fats and sugar, like low fat whipped cream and jello( Less than 100 calories)  Low fat Jello pudding or one of my favourites, a yogurt eaten with a banana...quickly cures the sugar craving and not extremely unhealthyWink

I would suggest that you try to refocus and remember what is was that made you want to lose weight and become healthier in the first place. You know you feel healthier,  more fit and more confident 100 lbs lighter so what could possibly be making you want to throw it all away on easter treats and junk food?

I wish you well. Hang in there girl!!

PS..just a thought. Maybe you don't really want this particular boyfriend and are subconciously trying to make him leave you???

Foods Trying to Build Muscle - How does my lunch seem? Mar 27 2008

My son just gained a ton of muscle in the last 2 years. He and his buddy did it by eating a lot of protein and carbs when he's working out...and I mean a lot!! He suggests to build muscle you should do a low number of reps ( 5) and do 3 or 4 sets every other day with a the most weight you can do. Although he eats very healthy, whole grains, fruits and veggies he would avoid too many salads while trying to build muscle. No soft drinks and easy on the fruit juice it contains a lot of sugar. There are a lot of different sites on the net that should focus on building bulk muscle that should be able to provide a lot of good information for you.  Laughing Good luck!!!

Foods Do you finish it or chuck it? Mar 26 2008
20:12 (UTC)

Ok, I just had to respond to this one. I was raised to finish everything on my plate and not to "waste" food. It was only a short time ago that began to question what that meant. I've decided that it is unhealthy to force myself to finish anything if I am full or have had enough. My body is NOT a garbage can, and it does not serve me well to put more into my body rather than in the trash or in the fridge as left overs. Thankfully for my children I no longer make them feel obligated to stuff themselves out of guilt, we are now much more concious about the amount of food we prepare and put on our plates and in I think this is actually healthier for us and the environment.Laughing

Hi, just wanted to say that I agree with what everyone that says starting out slowly and to add that you shouldn't  over do any excercise in the beginning, you may hurt yourself and will have to wait until you heal to start again. I also wanted to add that walking is a great "cheap" way to start and  I would also suggest  headphones with some upbeat music. This will help you keep a faster, more regular pace and it helps you from getting bored. Wink

Weight Loss has anyone changed their eating habits? Mar 23 2008

I never used to eat breakfast and most times I skipped lunch as well. Lots of coffee though! I needed the caffein just to keep going!! I was a mess, my skin terrible, my breathing was terrible, my heart was constantly pounding in my chest and I wasn't doing anything! My energy was so low I could barely move in the evenings. I needed a drastic change so I thought I would make a lifestyle change instead of going on a diet.  I now eat breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner and then snack. Before I would be starving when I got home from work. Grab and nibble until dinner, have a huge amount of meat, 4 x's the recommended serving if not more at dinner time and then nibble all night. I eat so much healthier now. I've changed to 100% multigrain breads, healthy cereals, low fat cheese, milk etc, way  more fruit and proper serving sizes. I never cook with salt, I've cut sugar from my tea and coffee and I slowly weaned myself off cream in my coffee; I'm down to 1% now and I'm aiming for black coffee. This has been an ongoing change and I still have improvements to make.

The results? I feel so much better, my skin, my hair, my energy, everything is improving. I am no longer bloated, my hernia is no longer bothering me, my heart rate has returned to normal, no more restless achy legs at night etc. I feel great and I want to stay this way!!!

Hi,

I need a little more info before I can offer any help. Do you have any illnesses and or have you quit smoking? Were you eating 6 times a day before you started the diet and if not what were your habits like before and how long were you eating like that? Also, what is your total calorie burn average for each day? Laughing

Foods How can I eat healthy with hardly any time?! Mar 10 2008

I definately feel your pain here. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day. I manage a little easier if I cook 3 or 4 chicken breasts at a time. You can refrigerate some and freeze some.. take it out of the freezer the night before and leave it in the fridge to defrost and reheat  the next day.  I find fish fillets cook so quickly in the microwave that I don't have to cook them ahead of time. I just throw on some spices and they only take 2-4 minutes. I like to cook 2 cups of rice at a time as well but you could cook more and freeze it. It takes so little time to reheat with the meat and I can add peppers or onions or soy sauce when i reheat for flavour. To save time I put the rice in small sandwhich bags and freeze in individual servings.

Ideally, it would be great if you could managed to pack your dinner and eat it before you leave work everyday...you work very long hours and you must be starving by the time you get home...that always lead to overeating for me. You might also try to get in a yogurt for a snack through the day. Hope this helped.

Weight Loss This is embarrassing but... Mar 07 2008
21:24 (UTC)

Hi !! I know exactly how you feel. But there are so many causes it might be best to check with your doctor...don't rule out lactose intolerance...that can cause a very bad gas as well as bloating and stomach pain. If you have a really bad odour you may  have really dirty pipes...no pun intended. If you've had a really poor diet your digestive system may not be pushing everything out properly and you could have a lot of fecal matter decomposing inside your digestive track. You may want to do a cleans, and I don't mean a fast but maybe an over the counter product to help gently flush out your system. Ask your pharmacist.  Drink LOTS of water too!!!

Hope you feel better soon!!
