Health & Support Wanting to start Intuitive Eating? Nov 24 2009

i suggest that you allow yourself to eat spontaneously, but just write down everything that you eat. this way you still feel in control of your calories, but you arent totally aware of how many calories you have eaten. by doing this, you'll learn to listen/trust your body to tell you what/how much to eat, because you'll know that you cant rely so much on the calorie number

* i emphasized the word "learn" because you wont quite get it at first. i've been trying to do this for a few months, and it's still difficult, but i feel 100% more in control of my eating and my life. it's made me a happier person and even increased my sex drive.

I agree with "no thank you."  It's polite, and it's nobody's freaking business why you turn down any food.

true that. once you start trying to justify yourself, you give others the opportunity to challenge you. "no thanks" with a little smile is perfectly polite.

i think people self medicate with food too much. when i do it, i regret it. feeling full and heavy sucks...the extra chocolate/ice cream/cake/pizza is never worth the regret felt afterwards.  she makes a good point. i think im gonna start using that phrase as a mantra

Weight Loss exercise makes me gain weight? Nov 20 2009
22:01 (UTC)

if cardio makes you hungry, then lay off it a bit, or stop all together. do weight training, cuz it'll increase your metabolism for much longer than cardio.

my experience is that i dreaded doing cardio so much that i felt like i deserved a snack before and after doing it. i wasnt hungry, but i just ate to deal with my emotions. so what i do now, if i dont feel like exercising, it just turn on the tunes and stretch for a little bit. if i feel like moving on to training, then i'll do it, but if i dont feel like it then i dont force myself.

if your an emotional eater, like me, and you eat because your fearful/anxious/worried/angry/sad about something (such as cardio, for me) then you need to find a way to deal with your feelings first. for me, i deal with my feelings by telling myself "dont worry, baby. you dont need to push yourself. just go relax and stretch out by the fire for a little bit, then if we feel like it, we can do a little more"

if your not an emotional eater at all, then please ignore this post :)

ive noticed that i usually only want desert if

1) i overate my dinner/got stuffer

2) wanted something sweet in the first place

so what i do now is ask myself before dinner "do i want something sweet or savoury", if i want something sweet then i'll just eat that instead of a regular dinner. but to balance things out, ill try to have some protein with it

hey...i just wanna shout out to all of you (selena, merylwhite, ohyum, gi-jane, claud) for being so supportive and having such interesting input. it's really refreshing to hear honest feedback and not just mindless argumentation.

a lot of you guys say that i should eat about 1800 calories. but CC and phord say that i should eat 1200-1300 to get down to my ideal weight (105 lbs) (and trust me...105 is NOT that thin...i have a freakishly small frame). i have been trying to eat 1200-1300 cals for the last couple years, and obviously slipping once in a while. do you think i could be in starvation mode? whats YOUR experience with this phenomenon. i just havent been able to convince myself that it really exists.

I'm 5'4" and 100 lbs, but I have an *extremely* small frame (for example, only kid-sized hats and sunglasses fit me because that's how small my skull is). Proportunately, my bones are very long and very thin. I maintain my current weight by eating 1,500 calories a day, and by going to the gym 5 days a week. I estimate that I burn around 300 calories for each day at the gym.

thank you, ohyum, for answering my question!!

its hard for me to believe that you eat 1500 cals. i usually eat less than that and i'm about 115lbs (i think...though i havent weighed myself in a while)

1) whats your macronutrient breakdown like (lighter on carbs? higher protein? etc etc...)

2) what kind of exercise do you focus on? cardio? weights? yoga? pilates? ??..??

well..one thing that i've noticed about my really tiny friends is that they tend to eat like little birds, and it's just very natural to them. i'm really tiny too (tiny, as in short) yet i want to eat more food than them (therefore i am fatter than they are).

for me, i understand that i am a boredom and emotional eater, so i guess my question should have been stated a bit differently. so here it is:

so to restate my question: how do you tiny little 100 pounders pull it off in a world full of huge portion sizes and emotional eating

i want to know how to reconnect with my body, because i think that the mind-body-hunger connection is something that naturally slim people really have nailed. it's something that i've lost and is so foreign to me that i actually depend on caloriecount.com to tell me how much more i can eat. i think CC is a nice tool to have, but i also think that to depend on it is ridiculous.

i appreciate your input although i disagree with you. i definitely think that a 100 pound short person must eat less than a 200 pound tall person.

most people who are that weight are short. so it's not some secret. 100 at 5'0" is the same as 5'8" and 130.

i know...and i'm short too! but im not 100 pounds anymore.

either way, they still eat less than people who are 130 pounds.

Weight Loss low carb? high fat? low protein? high protein? ARGHHHH! Nov 17 2009

I think the only reason that you lose weight on very low carb diets (faster) is because a) you are depleting your glycogen stores and b) i think carbs retain more water than protein or fats. therefore you are really just losing an excess of water...which will come back once you start eating carbs again. and if you like carbs chances are on a very strict no carb diet you will crave and be more suseptable to binging once you go off of it.

-just my two cents

hahaha...yea. thats what i'm hoping. i sure seem to be carrying a lot of extra "water" these days. i heard that after your body adjusts to eating a higher amount of carbs, over time it wont retain so much water. but it seems to be taking a long time for me...

I know that about 99% of people these days say that the best way to lose weight is to do a low carb, low calorie, high protein diet (duh...thats how i lost a bunch of weight a couple years ago)

Ummm... no the majority of people are not on this diet.

I eat 1500-1800 cals a day depending on activity level. And I usually have a 20-30% protein, 20-30% fats, 40-60% carbs.  That's not low carb.  And I know a lot of other people here have similar diets.

my point is that a lot of people talk about the importance of carb restriction, and im pretty sure that you are aware of that. you're diet sounds a little bit like mine, except my carbs are more in the 50-60% range and protein is 15-20%. are you losing weight on that diet? what are your stats like (if you dont mind my asking) in terms of weight, height, age. any perspective is really interesting to me.

My point is this site promotes healthy weight loss NOT fad diets.

This is a fad diet.  Atkins was a fad.  The low fat diet before that was a fad, etc.  Any diet that severely restricts a food type is a fad diet.

You still said MAJORITY of people were on this diet.  And that is false.  Don't make generalizations about everyone who's trying to lose weight b/c a lot of people on this site are here to do so healthily and without any fad diets.

low carb is not a fad diet. its a lifestyle for many people, and many people consider 40% carbs to be low carb. i'm not trying to argue with you, i'm simply stating the obvious fact that carb restriction is a popular concept these days. to deny that fact is just ignorant.

Weight Loss experience with artificial sweeteners Oct 01 2009
22:41 (UTC)

one thing that i've definitely noticed is that i can control my eating better at night (which was always my pitfall). and it just makes me stop thinking about food so much (which was my greatest challenge of all).

i wish more people would give it a try, i think you might be pleasantly surprised by how much freedom you feel once you give up artificial sweetener and copious amounts of sugar (i emphasize the word copious because i think that we all need little treats here and there)

right now i'm enjoying some blackcurrent, vanilla and ginseng tea with a little bit of soymilk. normally i would have put in an entire dropper full of stevia, but having it without the sweetener actually makes it enjoyable in a much more calming way.

if at one time you were heavy, and then you lose a lot of weight all of a sudden, then the people who are closest around you, such as your parents, tend to see you as unhealthy and too skinny because they were used to a heavy you. being a "healthy" weight usually looks fatter than most of us would like to be, and being "unhealthy" is what most of us aspire to look like (like a super model, for instance).

if you're happy, energetic, and like how you look, then being 100 pounds isnt a problem for someone like you.

It's the calorie content of your choices that will affect whether or not you lose weight.  The actual food you get in restaurants often bears no relation to their published calorie-counts.  Secondary could be the salt content.... fast-food is notorious for being larded with salt... because that can show up on the scales as fluid retention.

Have a rethink, perhaps....?  How about taking some healthy snacks to have at work so that you're not famished by lunchtime?  And maybe pack your own lunch so that you're more sure of the calories?

Good luck

why do you say that the published calorie count has no relation to the actual calorie count?

i like to think of jicama as a mild kinda of apple. that being said, it's awesome when you chop some up into a bowl, then add some mango to the same bowl and let the jicama marinate in the magoes juices. they taste awesome together.

you can pickle daikon (or just add some salt and vinegar), or put it in soup
