You could wear runners shorts that have built in panties with good fitting liners (most have comfortable, generous elastic around the legs).

You could also wear boy short underwear, which are extremely conservative and won't expose any part of your anatomy.

Excessive calcium's not good for you, so be careful on intake.  It can cause stones, and can deposit itself in the arterial walls.

I had an experience yesterday in a local Target store.  I was looking at the bathng suits when a woman started talking to her husband, who was pushing the cart.  In the seat looked like a four year old girl.

"Oh, this looks so cute...what do you think, honey?"  (She was talking to her husband.)

Her little girl pipes up, "MOMMY!!...you can't fit into that...you're too big!"

I had to duck around the corner to hide my smirk.  All I could think of was, "You know there's no Santa Claus AND no Christmas for YOU this year!!"  LOL....

Weight Loss Binge logging? Apr 28 2008
00:02 (UTC)

If you can log it, go ahead.

In the case of restaurant binges, it's hard because you often don't have the calorie, sodium, or fat counts.  In that case, I'd just skip the logging, but put a note on the calendar "binged" so you know when you look at the bigger picture in the future.

The next thing to do is just chalk it up, and move on to tomorrow.

Foods Flax Seeds Apr 27 2008

If you don't grind the seeds, they will pass right through and you won't get any benefit.

Cheese will cause the binding problem as well, so maybe you need to look at things like that when it comes to your diet.

You can put flax seed in your oatmeal, in smoothies, I've made bread with them, put them on top of fresh fruit, and if you bread chicken or fish, use the flax meal instead of bread crumbs.

Weight Loss Apple Cider Vinegar??? Apr 27 2008

Just skip the "quick fix" type stuff - you'll only gain the weight back with short cuts.  Do yourself a favor and simply concentrate on a good, clean diet and exercise with resistance training.

Assuming you'll still do this, it's around 2 tablespoons before each meal, and it's damned nasty to choke down.  The first day it won't bother you, but by day two your stomach will burn because....well, vinegar is an acid.

It's not the way to go.

Motivation EXERCISE STUFF! Now clutter... Could you just use one.or All or Nothing. Apr 27 2008
20:05 (UTC)

I had four boxes worth of dieting books, gizmos, and other fitness related clutter.  I had enough information about what works, what doesn't, and why - so I made a decision.  I put all the clutter into groupings, and sold it all on ebay.

All I have is a weight bench with a barbell, weights for the bar, dumbbells, yoga blocks, heavy duty resistance bands, and a stability ball, and I use all of it.  There's no sense in me adding stuff I'll never use.

The only thing I haven't been able to use that I do own....a chin up bar, but I'm hell bent on achieving that feat before the end of the summer.  It takes time and patience to build up lat strength, but if other women can do them, then I've got no damned excuse why I can't.  LOL

If I don't have it, I don't need it, and if I really want it....well, a gym membership would solve the problem nicely and get me out of the house.

Motivation Is this a possibility? Apr 27 2008

I totally agree with amethystgirl - having a goal is great, but most women don't leave themselves enough time to realistically meet their goals.

The realities:

  • We fall off the wagon and eat foods we know we shouldn't, or foods that will hold us back from reaching our goals sooner.
  • We have emotional moments like PMS or high stress levels that not even a Tibetan monk could resist eating.
  • We get invited out to dinner by family, friends, or we're just too exhausted to cook.
  • There are celebrations we can't weasel out of to protect our diets.
  • We rationalize entire cheat days that set us back, and even if we don't do cheat days, we rationalize out a calorie laden dessert as, "I didn't have an entire cheat day, so one dessert couldn't hurt!"  Riiiiiight.
  • PLATEAUS that never seem to end.
  • We don't work out, or we don't change our workouts on a regular basis to challenge new muscle groups and burn more calories.

These things do jump up and bite us on the bit like a pit bull, and even the  most determined dieter has their limitations.  In my experience, it took me 11 months to lose 65 pounds, and that was damned hard work.  I was laid off, had the time, and worked out 2-3 times a day to achieve that.

You can buy the dress, but be fully aware you might not fit into it until December....or maybe just in time for next spring.  You have your plans, and your body has ITS OWN PLANS...and the two don't often agree.  Laughing

If you worry about what everyone else is thinking, then you'll never do anything.  People look at you when you're at the grocery store, filling up your gas tank, and at the bank - it's a fact of life.

There are a lot of people who won't notice you at all because fat people become invisible in the eyes of many out there.  Some might make fun of you to your face or behind your back.  Others might be inspired by watching you make the attempt.

As long as you fear, you'll never do it, and that becomes a poor excuse.  Throw out the excuse book and JUST DO IT.

I started walking at 195 lbs, and I got honked, screamed, and laughed at, but who's laughing now!  Tongue out

Health & Support Bad dizzy spells after drinking water Apr 27 2008

You're drinking too much water - dizziness is a classic sign of water intoxication, which can be deadly.  Body cramps all over, a sensation of being choked, and pain in your chest - like a heart attack, will be your next signs you're in deep trouble.

What you need to do is get a couple of bottles of Gatorade in you over the next 24-48 hours, and always keep a spare or two in the house.  You must consume salt because you've diluted it out with too much water.  Also eat some spinach, bananas, and a little chicken as these will help to rebalance you.

At this point, screw your diet and the scale results - your body's in trouble and screaming as loudly as possible at you something is very wrong.  A diet won't help you one bit if you die.

Eat slowly - nurse it because quick wolfing will make the situation much worse than it already is.  You've flushed too much salt, potassium, and magnesium out of your system.  A quick fix is to lick salt out of the palm of your hand and sip enough water to get it into your system.  Get someone to go to the store for you if you don't have these things in your house.

Water is not a diet, but people tend to abuse it like it's another diet pill.  Water intoxication can lead to seizures, coma, and death.  It's NOTHING to be toyed with.

Fitness Has anyone done the 10 minute body dvds? Apr 27 2008

I don't mean to sound negative, but ten minutes won't get you the toned body you're looking for.  It's a marketing ploy - a short cut to sell DVD's.  Think about the body builders for a second...they don't work out for ten minutes, they work out for hours to develop the body.

You need to put in realistic amounts of time and lift real weights to get real results.

Sorry to disappoint you....you'd be wasting your time and money on such a product.

Weight Loss What if I cannot give up bad carbs??? Apr 25 2008
20:35 (UTC)

Apple shapes are usually a sign of imbalances in insulin and leptin - both aggravated by processed and bad carbs.  The more refined/processed carbs you eat, realize as soon as they're hitting your tongue, they're turning into sugar that's going to keep getting stored around your midsection.

If you want to lose weight, you should give up the breads, pastas, and a lot of otherwise healthy grains until you get the insulin and leptin back in check.  If you don't, the body will continue to store these as fat around the midsection.

The consequence of not taking these out of your diet?  If you exercise, you're going to be a sugar burner, not a fat burner because you're loading your system with....foods that are sugary, or break down into sugar.

It's totally up to you....no one force you to put down the bagel.

Weight Loss Lose body fat by eating less carbs? Apr 25 2008
18:23 (UTC)

Depends on the carbs - there are good ones (broccoli) and bad ones (breakfast cereals).

Don't buy into goofy schemes - use balance and common sense, or you'll just be losing weight temporarily.  Fact is even if you eat too much healthy food, you can still gain weight.

It's not the type, it's the quality of the food.  You'll lose more weight eating broccoli than a processed breakfast cereal.  Think it through logically.

Cravings come from blood sugar drops and spikes.  Control them, and you won't have a problem.

Cut out excess sugar sources in fruits, veggies, junk food, sweet sauces, drinks, and varioius forms of table sugar.

Do some research on the internet and find out how to control your blood sugar naturally.  There's plenty of good sources out there.

SI6 does work.  I used it to start out, and have since progressed to other programs, but it's a good place to begin.

1200 calories may be too low for you.  Do a search for "BMR calculators" and plug the numbers in for your body weight and type.

I read this about a year ago...

For every 20 lbs of excess weight a man loses, he regains an inch for "Junior".  It's based on the fact the fat pad at the base reduces.

As the article said, "'More of me to love' really means, 'more of me she has to endure.'"  LOL...

I thought losing weight would improve my dating life.  Strangely, I'm still about as popular as I was when I was 85 pounds heavier.  I'm still invisible!  Undecided

Health & Support diagnosed w/ PCOS last week...questions about drugs and BC Apr 21 2008

Another poster in here is right - insulin resistance and leptin are both your enemy when it comes to PCOS, and when your weight comes down, both hormones should follow suit.  Don't run out and buy leptin products as the stomach breaks it down, so it's a waste of money.  It has to be taken through IV, and it's expensive - not to mention something you can't just pick up at the grocery store.

I don't have health insurance, so I had to learn how to deal with this problem with vitamins and diet.  I take fish oil, flax seed oil, chromium picolinate, b6 (don't take over 75 mg/day because it causes nerve damage), and folic acid.

The biggest difference I had was with 600 mg/day of the chromium as it balanced my blood sugar, and I was able to take off 85 pounds.  I'm on my last 20 lbs right now, which means things will become more difficult as the body is programmed to hold onto that weight in case of famine.

Don't be afraid of nuts, olive oil and avocados as studies have shown a diet rich in monunsaturated fats (MUFA's) help to reduce insulin resistance while at the same time, increase your HDL ("good cholesterol").  Cut back on fruit and sweet veggies like corn, yams, beets - and definitely switch from refined carbs to fibrous carbs.

When it comes to PCOS and weight loss, you've got to have more patience than Job - and just remember it will happen.

Vegetarian Vitamins with protein? Apr 20 2008
16:18 (UTC)
4

There's nothing wrong with peanut butter....last I checked, it has no animal products, so I'd call it "vegetarian".

Get out of the habit of thinking something has too much fat in it.  Nuts are loaded with good, heart healthy fats.  They are also good for your brain as well.  Fat free, on the other hand, is kind of dangerous since every cell in your body requires fat for cell walls.  The right kind of fat will help you to feel full longer, and it helps you to lose weight by reducing insulin resistance while increasing your HDL ("good" cholesterol).

If you're really opposed to nuts, someone rattled off a great list of beans, legumes, soy products and certain grains.  If you're looking for protein powder, the health food stores often stock soy protein powders.  You can even find them unflavored and unsweetened, or sweetened with stevia versus regular refined sugars.  Try looking at Whole Foods - I seem to recall Jay Robb has a decently balanced soy protein powder that's stevia sweetened.

Foods Sugar/water: PLEASE RESPOND Apr 19 2008

High sugar anything will set off the craving mechanism.  Water won't necessarily flush out the sugar - you have to exercise to burn it up or it will deposit itself as fat.

Just control your blood sugar and you won't crave high sugar or natural sugar snacks.  The body sees all sugar the same - as an energy source that if not used, will get stored.

People might not worship "Biggest Loser" if they understood what really goes on.  If she was a decent trainer, she would have never agreed to support people on calorically deprived diets, excessive exercise, and laxative/dehydration style weight loss methods.

What she's a part of is one of the unhealthiest models I've ever seen....and people are idealizing this show.  It encourages major muscle loss in order to to win the competition.

Ever notice how the news media used to show pictures of returning astronauts being carried from their crafts?  It's because they lost muscle mass in just a few days in space.  I'm surprised the contestants on that show have the strength to carry the check after they've won.

The other reason I don't heat olive oil is...the burnt taste is just nasty.  It's a low heat oil - notice how fast it starts to smoke in the pan?  There are oils that are better suited for higher temps, and olive oil isn't one of them.
Foods Question about sodium? Mar 10 2008
00:45 (UTC)

Sodium needs calcium to process it, so if you don't have enough in your diet, the sodium will come from other sources...like your bones.

Jill's right on this:  One caveat - sodium is an essential nutrient, so you NEED to get something like 500mg/day to survive (I'm not sure what the exact number is, but that's the right ballpark).

Drinking too much water will cause an imbalance.  The water dilutes the sodium in your blood, which can lead to seizures, coma, full body cramping, heart attack symptoms, and death.  Sodium not only causes high blood pressure, but it regulates blood pressure in those with healthy blood pressure numbers.  It is a necessary evil.

Foods White bread Mar 10 2008
00:43 (UTC)

White bread breaks down fast and spikes your insulin.  When that happens, it sets up your craving mechanism.  If you *got* to have it, then make sure you eat a protein with it to prevent/control the craving.

Foods How do ya'll eat canned tuna?? Mar 10 2008
00:38 (UTC)
18

Pay attention to the sodium count on tuna - most contain 2.5 servings per can, and if you're not careful, you'll end up with like 600+ mg of salt in one sitting, not including salt in any ingredients you might add (salad dressing has loads of sodium).

Yes there are low salt varieties out there, but they are nasty tasting.

I gave up canned tuna and instead opt for fresh or frozen tuna steaks as an occasional treat.

Foods New snack..............is it good or bad??? Mar 10 2008
00:31 (UTC)
4

I agree with the first poster - the sodium's off the charts....like 1500 mg in one of those packets.  When you consider the RDA of sodium's 2400, you're already like 60%+ towards your entire day's ration in one little snack.  The more sodium you consume, the more your body uses calcium to process it....and if there's not enough calcium in your diet, it has to come from somewhere.

You're not supposed to heat olive oil because it's not meant for high heat.  When you apply heat to olive oil, it changes into a trans fat.  I always cook with water, and if I want the olive oil, I add it when I'm taking the dish off the heat to avoid this problem.
