lol, definitely not as "natural" as I'd like it to be but hey, at 20g protein it fills me up, and basically is the equivalent to chocolate covered fish (lol!). I like the taste of most protein bars though, and not everyone does. You can always try it. I prefer the PB one more than the others myself.

rgurleyjr1,

these are really great bars. I also enjoy the Met-Rx bars, in Chocolate Chunk and PB Blast... the smaller bars are particularly yummy and they run about 190 cals and the same 20g protein. MMM Laughing

LOL, I know this might be a new flavor or wrapper but the nutritional content is the same... 12g protein 180 cals.... and I'm sure the same amount of sugar.

what is 70% organic really mean anyways??? Not that I don't love these bars (they are literally candy bars with a little protein and fiber) but really??? idk... not a protein bar in any means...

Foods Muscle Milk worth the calories? Nov 08 2009
02:43 (UTC)
Original Post by juliewyant:

I have a big bottle of Muscle Milk Chocolate Milk supplement from CytoSport and was curious if because of the high caloric content if I should be taking while trying to lose weight. The instructions say to mix with 2 cups of water / 2% milk and take both before and after workouts, but it is 640 calories for 2 cups, which means that I am swallowing 1280 calories in this supplement alone each day.

Can anyone tell me if it is even worth taking? Does it work or am I just wasting calories on a hype product? I do workout for an hour a day and expend much of those calories from exercise but 1280 seems HUGE to me. Any advise?

I know you're trying to gain and beat your ED. So I'll say it's fine. But for someone like myself - who is always considering the worthiness of calories - NO it's not worth it... it's loaded with sugar - even the Muscle Milk Lite. But it's a good into to protein shakes.

Try out a Met-Rx Protein Plus (Chocolate is best). It's 100 cals per scoop (despite the nutrition facts on here saying 3 scoops per 200 cals). Add two cups of fat-free milk and ice?? MMMMM, 42g protein, about 360cals, and you have yourself a guilt-free shake. Excellent for a mid-day on the go lunch if it's too hot to eat or if you just had a killer workout (in which case you might want to add some oats or carbs like brown rice).

Btw, I read your profile and some posts and even tho I don't know you I'm proud for how far you've come... it's not easy to change eating habits (whether losing or gaining or even just eating healthier). So kudos to you. Cool

Pregnancy & Parenting 18 weeks pregnant with third baby and still haven't felt baby move - HELP Nov 05 2009

I'm 18-19 weeks and today for the first time I felt it move. BUT it was only because I was in one of those bullet elevators and I went 28 floors in a second. I felt it hit the top and sink to the bottom. I went yesterday to the OB/GYN and I watched it kick the crap out of my bladder - no placenta in the way. I didn't feel a dang thing. So I know she's alive and well but other than that I can't feel anything. Except the mild discomfort of my uterus expanding. lol.

I definitely agree with Donnie that people often think they need way too much protein and the only way to really tell is to take a nitrogen balance test (just a urine stick test like for diabetics). Too much protein can be hard on your kidneys and liver and cause other issue as well it will eventually be stored as fat if you don't need it for tissue or immediate energy needs.

I think this is only really true if you do not work out and also if you might be prone to liver/kidney issues in the first place. To be honest as long as you eat honestly and avoid most kinds of crap foods you'll find you take in a good amount of protein... but don't avoid eating 100-150g on the basis you're "overloading your kidneys" bc it's probably a big line of crap. Especially if you don't see ketones in your urine - which most never do unless they are doing atkins phase one or seriously depleting the bod of carbs.

Sorry, but science doesn't agree with you, where the line of too much and ok is will depend on a lot of factors including how long you are on it for, but why go on such an unnatural diet in the first place? You can lose the weight on ANY diet but a healthy lifestyle isn't about fancy diet prescriptions that ignore our basic biology and evolution.

Dabrock, I see from your profile and comments youre new. I also see you blog a lot about cardio. Therefore my assumption is you care little about muscle building and more about weight loss... which is great if you are overweight or obese but for most muscle and strength training is important and vital. For myself, I do best on 1.5-2g protein for every pound of lean body mass. That, my friend, is a science, and is backed by nearly every body builder or sexy female fitness model. Now if I was a biker or runner (which I do from time to time) I need more carbs. I still enjoy healthy carbs but in comparision to the US Govm't reccomendations it's a far cry .

And for reference, fancy biology? lol, last I checked pasta and other enriched carbs are not wholefoods. Therefore science would say eat raw... so again you have me baffled. I saw eat meat, eat veggies, and eat fruit. That's a good NON FANCY, non-prescription, good way to go.

But then again I haven't heard didly about how much weight you lost. In fact, why don't you have any pics up?? hmmm. Beginning to doubt you. lol.

I entered this into the food database and came up with:

3 egg whites
1/4 cup mushroom, sliced
1 tsp vegetable oil
2 slices wheat toast
1 Tbs margarine
1/4 pancake
1/4 cup potato
1 tsp salt

I added oil bc they always cook omelettes in oil. Margarine was most likely used in the restaurant as they never use real butter anymore. Salt because homefries are relatively plain.

Here is a guide that may help. http://www.indoorclimbing.com/Protein_Foods.h tml

little has great ideas. I eat about 1.5g of protein per lb of lean body mass per day (remember to up your fiber otherwise you'll never see the JOHN again! lol!). Here's my typical day:

  • 6am: 4 egg whites, 1/2 cup fiber one, 1/4 cup bran buds, 1/2 cup light soymilk
  • 9am: protein bar (MET-Rx, or Luna, or Pure Protein) or if I don't have it I'll grab a sando (2 slices whole wheat, 4 egg whites, 2 slices tomato, 1 slice kraft ff cheese)
  • 12pm: 3-4oz Chicken breast, 1/2 cup (cooked) lentils or black beans, 1-2 oz cooked swiss chard or spinach
  • 3pm: protein shake (MET-Rx or something similar), or a bar, or even a salad or something
  • 6pm: Solid dinner - could be an egg white omelette (I'm addicted to eggs), seared ahi tuna on spinach salad, or sashimi w/ salmon or tuna with veggies, or "chicken parmasen" (chicken breast covered in spaghetti sauce and some low-fat cheese...mmm..)
  • 9pm: cereal, or an apple, or something light.

I usually try to shoot for 1500 cals per day now since I am prego and don't work out much, but on my olden days of hardcore workouts I'd plan my meals around my workouts and add good carbs and fats (via nut butters or avocado) to bump it to like 2500-3k cals.

Just go slowly, I did this pretty quick and I had no clue about the need for carbs and fiber and fat. I ended up very painful for a couple weeks before I finally realized I was blocking myself! lol!!

Good luck!

Foods Any guesses on the calories in this one!?! Oct 16 2009
18:08 (UTC)

I <3 ily2tori's response here.

Most of the time I will say rule of thumb is any plate at a restaurant picture to be a minimum of 1,000 cals. Mostly fat at that since butter and oil is used a ton.

Also think in your head that you should only eat half. If you take the rest home, you log it (always add a TBS of Olive oil or Butter because chances are it's in there and you just don't know it). Once you have calculated it - chances are the half you ate isn't all that bad and the days isn't lost :).

Or if it is bad, then at least you didn't eat the whole thing! lol!!

Hi Tracy,

I want to start by wishing you all the best of luck and I genuinely hope you will gain the "number", size, and look you are waiting for :).

For your posts, I noticed you are eating only 1200 and exercizing? I am not sure of your height, but even at 47 that is far too few cals. If I were you, at your weight, you'll find that you burn cals and drop weight easier... so honestly I'd shoot for 1600 a day (try to break it up into 5 meals of 300 cals each and 1 100 cal snack) and doing a nice easy workout everyday for a month. By easy I mean walking at a good pace for 30-45 minutes; maybe with a friend :).

That in itself should have you dropping sizes; especially if you watch were your cals come from: shoot for wholesome foods (but if you opt for weightwatchers or something else from the prepared foods that's better than junk ;])

So again, good luck to you and I pray you find happiness in your goals :)

Well right now I eat anywhere from 1800-3000 cals a day. I'm 25, 5'4", and right now I'm at about 147... granted I'm prego and I don't usually weigh this much. But normally I'll take in about 2000-2,500 cals depending on my activities...

Everyone's different. Try things out for about 2 weeks, if it works awesome, if it doesn't then skip it. Make sure to listen to your bod. G'luck :)

Ya know if there was a magical weight, number, or food... we would all know it. lol. There isn't. Which is why you need to see the doc to pinpoint where you're lacking.

As far as telling your doc - it's important for him/her to know why it went away. If you appear to be recovering on your own why would they recommend a shrink? And even then - you do what cha want... they may just have to follow procedure and make recommendations. That being said: any jerk off who judges you is an old fart who doesn't know anything about modern everyday issues.

I once read somewhere that one out of every three girls is effected by an eating disorder at somepoint in their life.

That means if dick-head doctor has three daughters most likely one developed a little issue with food. So relax a little - and make sure to tell your doc everything. Its ok and if they judge you, tell the front nurse staff and ask for the lead doc and report his/her ass. Bc that's not ok.

We got your back girl! Now go get your butt in the doc!! ;)

Hmm. Thanks for your reply, littlemalynda! It seems that we posted at like.. the EXACT same time. haha

I want my period back, but I want it back naturally. I want my body to just have a period- you know, like every other fertile 18 year old woman. Did I screw my body up so much that I have to resort to chemicals?

No, I don't think chemicals is the answer; you messed up your natural chemistry by bad decisions - I believe for the majority of the time you can reverse the damage done naturally. It may just take time. Just because you haven't had it for a year doesn't mean your bod has been in recovery for a year... (does that make sense?).

Also, I'm not gaining anymore. Actually, while I was gaining, getting my period back was a huge motivator. And now I'm here and... still waiting.

How frustrating!!! I know how you feel and I can tell it's one of those things where you're probably thinking about this issue once per day racking your brain, searching the internet for answers... one day when you least expect it you'll get your period - and it won't be due to one particular thing over another.

I also just want to say- granted, all of those things can likely effect your period. But before my ED,  I got it every month without fail. Extra sleep, barely any sleep, eating regularly, not eating until dinner, eating nutritious foods, eating lotsa junk.. my body just wasn't that sensitive. I didn't have to 'watch my fat intake' to make sure I got my period. It just happened.

Fat intake helped me once... I ate literally about 100g of good fats per day (made me sick) since I normally have about 15-25g per day. Yeah I think it worked - who knows. And before you weren't concerned so much about life, your job, your school, your body, your period, gaining weight, losing weight, and everything else under the sun. Seriously I know where you're at girl and it's time to slow it down a peg, have some fun, and don't worry so much :)

I'm starting to feel like I must have really screwed up my body, in ways I can't imagine or something.

You did mess up; fine. Let it be a lesson - don't fudge up the way you're supossed to lose weight (slow, careful, and listening to your bod). BTW in case you didn't know - the first 7 years of a menstural cycle can change at the snap of a finger. It's only after about 7 years of consistency do you really predict your periods. Hopefully this won't cause them to be sparratic.

I feel that you SHOULD go to your doc. Make sure you explain everything... bring in a little note pad with bullet points so you can tell them everything in short. Then explain what you do have: in the beginning I felt nausea, I had cramps and bloating but no bleed, then it began to effect my moods, I was tired, I started bruising easier. Make sure to notate this stuff even if it seems minute.

There's nothing wrong with seeing a doc for advice. They may not "cure" you but it may relax you a bit and at least if you take all your lab tests you will KNOW there's nothing really wrong. Yes it's unnatural for you to not get your period but at the same time this happens... and honestly IMHO I don't think you'll be getting osteoporsis from the Amenorrhea as much as you might have damaged your ligaments, muscle, and other tissues from the starvation.

So I hope that some of this helps a little... there is a lot of stuff on here about amenorrhea. Most girls beat it; never seen a blog where they didn't actually.

Kepp us posted hun and go see a doc. :)

Hi,

I agree with everyone here; just be honest with your doc. If they are a jerk or make you feel uncomfortable just find a new one. Particularly I find docs with a background in sports medicine help. Athletes deal with Amenorrhea often (case in point - myself).

I lost it for about 8 months, then it would kinda come back, then it would go again... now I'm prego so i guess I won't be dealing with this issue again for about 5 more months. lol.

Anyhow, diet consistency is important, stress levels matter, sleep matters, and body fat percentage matters as well.

I think it will take some time for your bod to realize it's ok to go back to normal BUT on the slight chance you screwed up your hormones it's beneficial to have an endocrinologist or an OB/GYN specializing in athletes or ED to have your bloodwork taken to check a wide array of factors. Your Progesterone, Estradiol, Keytone, Thyroid, Glucose Levels, and Red/White blood cell count are important to evaluate.

These tests will help with a lot of things: seeing if anythings' off or too low where it may contribute to the loss of your period, AND if you might have developed any issues to your organs from your ED. The sooner you know the faster you can change the issue and begin to really heal Smile

Make sure to get adequate sleep and balanced meals... eating every 3-4 hours about the same amount of cals to keep your blood sugar levels even keel... it helps you from gaining too quick and shocking your system (substancial weight gain can also make your period go buh-bye). It will also let you gradually adapt to a helathier style of living Smile.

I hope everything works well for you and please keep us posted. Don't worry, women have this much more often than you realize and they almost always turn out ok Innocent

Ok,

My bod is the same (I have some thicky little leggers)... which isn't a bad thing (generally means you have a nice butt too - and guys like that). So you have a good base ;).

Don't get me wrong, sans the pregnancy I did long distance (?) running every week... once per week I ran 10 miles through hills. Didn't do a damn thing for my abs, or my legs really (a good amount of butt though as it was uphill and you can't run fast). BUT it did help my shoulders... so did the elliptical. Also gave me an excuse to carb-load up on popcorn and pancakes and other bad stuff the morning before the run.

Weight lifting? Well at first I wasn't a fan - I felt awkward, I looked stupid, and I gained weight... unlike cardio this had me stuffing my face afterwards and busning like no cals... plus I was sore as hell the next two days.

The key wasn't lifting - it was lifting heavy and doing certain exercises. Squats, straight-legged deadlifts, lunges, sissy squats, and that one exercise.... damn can't think of the name but your practically lying horzontally, legs up pushing weight up with your legs.... oh well you get the picture.

Anyhow that's when I started noticing my cellutlite was less visible... My legs didn't get so much "smaller" as they did just sexified. My calves went down, as did my upper thighs... but I gained an inch in my quads lol! But I'll be dammed if I wear shorts or a skirt people look ;)

So try your cardio... it will help for keeping your diet in check since you get to eat more on those days... but seriously hit the weight room and go fudge it up like some angry guy on steroids... you'll get results.

Pregnancy & Parenting Confused. Could I be pregnant Sep 29 2009
03:08 (UTC)

False pregnancy feelings are common. Much more than you think. Especially if you're trying to concieve or you've just had lotsa fun being reckless (like me).

I had all the symptoms of pregnancy without the fetus (lol) for about a year. Nausea at times, tiredness, swollen boobs, no period. Mainly I think my symptoms were caused by too much exercise and a hormonal imbalance.

Now that I am pregnant it's a trip because I haven't felt this "not pregnant" in a very long time... In fact I was really confused when the test came back positive - and then to find out how far along I am? whoa.

Anyhow, good luck to you sweets and I hope you're prego but maybe the babe is just takin it's time to be announced. ;)

Yes I dropped weight like a fly, but then I was only eating about 200 every 2 hours. It also helpes me from binging or breaking my diet bc I know I'll be eating again soon (binge or not I stick to my diet, so I try to use it as a deterant). Anyhow it works for me, but everyone is different. I just ate every two hours from the moment I woke up; not including the time I'm eating.

The way I got control was by seeing a dietitian mainly.  To help me regain control.  It has been great.  I've cut down my cals to 1200-1400 cals a day.  I didn't think I could do it with so little but I can because I eat anything I crave I just measure it out according serving size.

That's what triggered my binging. I was cutting for a while to drop 20lbs for a photo shoot. I gained back all and then some within 2 weeks. I am so hurting by my negligence. But then again I actually work out... 1200 cals per day and I'd be dead in a couple weeks.

Weight Loss Once I start I cannot stop!! Aug 13 2009

Brandy,

I just finished a big cut cycle, and as much as I never like to admit it - when I diet down I go into crazy attack binge mode. I ended up gaining 17lbs in about 2-3 weeks. Pretty bad. :( Makes me sick in every form of the sense.

But I have realized that like monkfish has said, it's a process to stop binging. It takes me about 1 month to get back to normal... so far the past three weeks I am gradually getting better. First 1 perfect day, then 2 last week, then 3 this week... last night would have been four but I had to make cupcakes for 50 kids and well... whoops. :/ At least I didn't eat too much.

Anyhow, just take a deep breath and concentrate on that moment rather than the day as a whole. I also eat 250 cals per meal (at 6-7 meals per day though)

G'luck

If you did a 500 cal deficit for 30 days and didn't lose at least 5lbs then you need to either step up by exercising or maybe you have a slow thyroid. Reducing cals works - straight up.

I would recommend avoiding fake sugars, dairy, and high sugar foods (they can make you appear bigger than you are). Integrate some cardio (hiit is the best) for some quick slim downing. Hit up the sauna and shed the 10lbs of water weight you're probably carrying. It may be only temp weight loss but you'll make it; you have more than enough time.

On cutting season I drop 20lbs in 6 weeks... and it's just fat. If you don't care what kind of weight (water, muscle, or fat) then just cut cals, sodium, do cardio, and sweat it out.

G'luck.

safina,

we are two of a kind hun! I lost about 75lbs over the course of 2+ years and then in one year I did a whole body transformation by adding the gym; it was weird how easily I found I could go from never really running in my life to running 10-15 miles. Or the fact I can squat 135lbs after only lifting for about 6 months. Weird. Anyhow, just as my body is getting great - my hormones are really plummeting.

I wish you the best of luck - personally my belief is that while we might be able to conduct this kind of vigorous training it will take time for our bodies to really get used to operating at such low weight and body fat. Fat creates a safe-haven for hormones... so losing it makes sense that we lose our hormone levels also.

Safina,

Unfortunately love, there is just some women who for some reason respond negatively to working out... myself being one of them. I battled to get my period back; hormones and being able to concieve? psh. I can forget it.

I am the same way, I was really responding well to working out. I was much smaller and tighter and just sexier than ever working out hard... I stayed the same weight (135 ish) and went from a size 8 to a 3/4. I have had issues in the past with misscarriages, so I personally think that prior to working out I probably had low levels of progesterone anyhow. Working out made it worse. My level of estrogen was at the lowest end of normal; progesterone was almost zero (normal fluctuates between 8.0-45.0, mine was >0.2).

While it's irritating your weight has had to increase so much, maybe try a different approach - less stressful? Go on a walk everyday for 30-45 mins with a friend or your dog... kick back a little more and don't worry too much. Keep that up for 6 months and get your levels taken; see if your bosy responded negatively to it. If not then you can try kicking it up a notch. Add 2 days of weight training per week (like 30 mins). etc etc.

Good luck

Sorry I probably should have included more info...im 5'4 and 120lbs. I normally eat 1500-1600cals a day and burn about 200-300cals through exercise but I dont exercise everyday.

abbi333-Im not really sure if my fat intake is enough...it takes up about a quarter of my diet. Is this ok or should it be more or less?

Well I'll be honest, that's probably about enough cals to keep you at a maintain phase (per cal count I'm the same stats - only I have about 10lbs more muscle weight Wink and it says my maintain is 1680 at sedentary). If you are within the first 5 years of first getting your cycle then don't worry so much; these things can happen and more often than you think. Most college girls get this and almost never notice it because they are so busy. Cycles can come and go... hormones and stress can really pull you way out of whack.

If you're not in the first 5 years here's a checklist:

  • Sleep min 7.5 hours per night
  • Learn to find 30 mins per day to destress (yoga, meditation, nap, etc)
  • Take a multi-vitamin (just in case you are running low on something)
  • Take Calcium & Iron (bc no cycle = bone weakness and iron deficiency)
  • Try Phosphatidyl Serine. It's a "mood booster" can help with stress
  • Eliminate long-distance running, or any endurance training lasting over 60 mins in length. Studies show endurance training lasting over 60 mins can lead to severe hormonal changes in women - effecting cycles and also estrogen levels.
  • Try to watch your macro's (but not crazily Wink). Fat is a good thing - especially MUFA's (monounsaturated fatty acids). So add an oz of nuts as a snack; 200 cals and 20g of good healthy fats later and your hair and skin will love you Innocent
  • Avoid diets rich in anti-estrogens (i.e. don't eat nothing but soybeans all day)
  • Keep your weight balanced if possible; don't gain too quick or lose anything... just stay stable for a while.

I hope that helps. I battled with this also. For me it was a mixture of running, lack of sleep (I got about 6.5-7 per night) and stress.

Waste of money.  They don't really burn fat.  They give you more energy to push harder.  If you need an extra boost drink coffee before you workout.

I agree. When I did my "cut" cycle I was gunning for the energy to keep up with all the cardio/Hiit. I took NitroPump by Met-Rx. I found it helped keep me pumped and energized when my food intake was so low and my carbs were depleted. I needed the boost. Espresso w/ a little milk does the trick too. Another thing I looked into and found helped was a mix of these: T3 Thryoid support, Chromium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Cinnamon. Helped me drop about 15 lbs and close to 5% body fat in 6 weeks (obviously, it's only a temp weight loss for show/photos)

I don't think appetite supressants are so good... idk, something fishy about that. Water loss isn't right either so beware of diuretics.

Lastly, good luck :)

Weight Loss Does anyone else here question the wisdom of eating 5-6 small meals a day? Jun 23 2009

I think it depends on you, and also where you are in your weight loss. 3 meals worked for me when I had 30 lbs to lose. I have maybe 10lbs (at most) and really I'm pretty good where I'm at but I'm shedding body fat now for bikini season ;). That means 6-7 meals a day... but then again it also depends on where your at. If you're serious about weight loss and body fat then you'd probably do the 6-7 and make the effort. If you're looking for the easy way then just do whatever feels easy and see if it works :)
