1800-2000 calories would be fine.  Just make sure the calories are good calories and you'll be fine!

I'm not a fan of buying things that are too small.  Why?  Because even if you get down to that size, you don't know how it's going to fit or look.  Example.  I had a pair of jeans in a 9 that were comfortable.  I liked the jeans so I bought them in a 5 too.  When I got down to the 5, the jeans looked AWFUL and I ended up having to return them.  When you lose weight, styles that looked good on you when you were bigger, often don't when you get smaller.

They have tons of great recipes, and books you can buy as well.  You don't have to give up your comfort foods, you just have to make them yourself (healthily) and control what goes into them.

Also, if you're a comfort eater, you may want to try therapy to get to the bottom of why you eat for comfort and learn healthier ways to cope :)

Original Post by gsgirl2913: on top of that we have snacks in the house for our 2 little kids, so just saying dont bring it in just isnt an option.

This doesn't make sense to me, it sounds like you're saying your kids snacks are unhealthy?  No offense, but if you're struggling with a weight problem due to unhealthy eating wouldn't you want better for them so you WOULD stop bringing junk food around except as an occasional treat?

I had a roommate that was morbidly obese (400lbs / 6ft even) and to support his efforts if he couldn't eat it, it wasn't there.  My kids understood, but then again my kids aren't really allowed junk food anyway except as a once a week treat in the lunch boxes and of course kids parties and special occasions.  With all the weight problems my mom had and the ones I went through, there was no way I was going to instill anything less than good habits in them so it wasn't hard to clean out the house for the roommate anyway.

OP: I think explaining to your dad what you're trying to do and asking him to keep the food somewhere you don't know about it would be a great plan.  If you have a little extra money you could buy one of those little lockbox firesafes for 20-30 bucks and ask him to put the stuff you absolute CANNOT resist in there until you are ready to face it.  I don't feel that it's victim thinking at all, binge eating is a REAL problem and CAN be treated, but you may need to take it slow.  So first try and get THE MOST tempting out of sight and then work from there.

Light Laughing Cow.  Plain when I'm in Canada (2 wedges for 45, whereas the same kind is 35 for 1 wedge in the US...that's our "non light" version here), and Garlic Herb when I'm in the US (35 per wedge).

Strawberries with splenda

Bananas

Kavli Crispbreads (like a very thin version of a Wasa cracker, 50 cal for 3)

Yoplait Source yogurts (35 cal each)

Muscle Milk Powder, vanilla cream (I make it with skim milk, 10oz + 1/2 scoop = around 180 cal and its great post workout).

Weight Loss When your partner is so not into eating healthy Feb 06 2009

He says he doesn't want to sabotage your weight loss but yet he INSISTS *strongly* you go out and then proceeds to inhale the entire menu?  How does he NOT see that he IS sabotaging your weight loss.

This needs to END.  You need to put your foot down politely and tell him that he is welcomed to go out to eat as much as he'd like but you DO NOT want to go, please don't ask, and you will let him know if there's ever an occation you DO want to eat out on.  Make him not asking very clear, and a rule.

Start making extra food on the days you do cook and before anyone gets anywhere near it, put some in freezer bags and put it away for yourself.  Let him know that anything in the freezer is not for him touch, it's for nights that he eats out.  He's welcomed to eat anything you cook and leave in the fridge, but your food in the freezer is off limits because it's for nights you don't feel like cooking but don't feel like blowing your day of hard work by eating a restaurant meal.

And lastly, let him know how you feel watching him eat like that.  And about his lifestyle.  Don't be mean about it, but be HONEST about *everything*.  Sit down and tell him how you feel, how he's making you feel, how he's holding you back, how important this is to you.  Honestly unless he's extremely selfish and a total prick, he'll be willing to avoid foods you freeze and stop asking you to eat out.

Weight Loss Rewards... Feb 06 2009

Original Post by deirdrereilly:

I just started back to my weight loss journey Dec 16, 2008 (odd to start on a Tuesday I know but it just seemed right!).

I have set my first goal for March 10th, my goal is to have obtained at least 10 lbs in total weight loss.  It's been a VERY slow moving process for me since I started.  Currently I'm down 7.2 lbs so I'm hoping I can meet it.  For my first reward I'm going to start small, I will reward myself with a new workout DVD (I've been dying to add to my Turbo Jam collection) or buy a new piece of clothing, I'll decide later.

Once I meet my goal, hopefully by September, I'm going to reward myself with some kind of spa treatment at my salon.  It'll be right before my wedding (Oct. 3, 2009 YAY!) so I'm going to seriously need it.  I was thinking massage or body wrap, we'll see what the wallet has in store for me then.  :)

Your wedding date will be my 9 year anniversary :D.

I personally don't reward myself except by looking at old pictures and looking in the mirror.  Seeing how I am now is reward enough.  YMMV.  I think work out dvds and spa treatments are fantastic ideas.

Started at 155 in March 3rd, dropped down to 120 by June 1st and have been maintaining.  I'd like to lose a little more weight as I'm small framed, athletic, and have arthritis my doctor prefers me around 110-115.  I'm not terribly dissapointed with 120 or maintenance but I'd like to drop that last 10lbs.

Original Post by ingrid1984:

also the breastfeeding did not help me to lose the weight because i was at 170 for 4 months....

How were you eating at the time?  I'm guessing that nursing helped you maintain.  It burns 500 calories a day so it really can compensate if you're not eating well.

I hate the whole "nursing makes you lose weight" thing because while it CAN be true, it REALLY depends on how you eat.  If you're eating 3000 calories a day and sitting on your couch 24/7, no you won't lose weight.  You'll probably maintain, but not lose.  If you're eating 1700 calories a day and nursing fulltime and sitting on the couch though, yeah, you'll lose weight.

I'm glad things are working out for you though.  It seems you've had a hard time of it.  I "got lucky" with my initial weight loss.  I was 165 when I got pregnant - I was VERY active but I ate like crap so even 1.5 hours of cardio 4-6 times per week was just maintaining my weigh.  I only gained about 15lbs during pregnancy, I dropped 30 from having him, shaped up my diet (not even that much - I ate the same bad foods, just less of them, around 1500-2000 calories a day instead of 3000) and went from 150 to 125 in about 6 months.  I decided to actually get healthy and be athletic again when my partner had wanted to get into body building (not professional but just enough to "look great").  I learned loads and loads about diet and nutrition and just went at it.  I cut my body fat percentage by something like 12% too.

If you're in shape there's no reason to stop exercising.  Tone it down if you'd like, but no need to stop.  In fact, you'll regret it.  I can tell you this from experience:  Exercise really DOES make pregnancy AND delivery (ESPECIALLY delivery) a LOT easier.  You feel better, look better (not that that's paramount, but it does wonders for your self-esteem and emotional state), and popping that baby out is less work.

I'd be more focused on making sure you eat enough and that you eat well - you only need about 300-500 calories more per day while pregnant and they need to be good calories ;).  Same goes when you're nursing if you feel you need them (some women feel they need to eat more, some are fine on their regular diets - nursing burns 500 calories per day as well - I gained 15lbs during pregnancy [average gain is 15-30lbs], lost 30 giving birth, and lost another 30 in a year of nursing).

Abs are 70% diet, 30% exercise.  So really start reading labels.  Cut out simple carbs, eat brown/wheat EVERYTHING and avoid added sugars.  Lean proteins are the way to go.  Watch your fat intake and what kind of fat it is.  Good fats are okay (however you still have to stay in the RDA), avoid bad fats at all cost.

" The unhealthy habit are just as bad for your body even if you don't put on weight"

This is beyond true.   And on top of that, your metabolism will eventually slow down.  Which would you have preferred your parents instilled in you?  Healthy eating habits and how to treat yourself in moderation or it's okay what to eat what you want, when you want as long as you aren't fat.

Goodness people! Talk about an "instant" society! You're upset because you haven't gotten immediate results in 3 weeks?? And so you're thinking the heck with it, you're just going to give up and go back to the way you were before?

I got news for you - not only will you fail at this goal but you're going to fail at life with that attitude.

If you want to change things it takes hard work and commitment and dedication and plenty of blood, sweat and tears. Discipline, which as you admitted you don't have.

But I suggest you develop it now if you want to succeed in anything you do.

Well you put it a lot more civilly and eloquently than I was going to put it.

OP he's right - it takes TIME.  And hard work.  If these are things you aren't willing to invest, then you can't have your goal.

Also, you mention wanting a 6 pack?  Abs are 70% diet, 30% exercise so you REALLY have to be willing to put in time and effort on your diet if you want a 6 pack.

Sit them all down and explain that you'll no longer be keeping junk food in the house.  Explain it's not just because of your daughter, but because you've realised that you're setting them up for a lifetime of unhealthy habits.  Explain that everyone will still get treats, but they will not be kept in the house and that kind of food is not welcomed in your home.

We have a junk food free house, no one's felt any spite or remorse or negative feelings about it yet.

Weight Loss i *heart* supermarkets now. do you? Jun 10 2008
13:52 (UTC)

Well, I wouldn't say I'm in love with food but I DO love those bulk bins.  I make my own trail mix which is really good (though high cal - but it's good fats and heaps of protein so I don't mind) after exercise and around period time because it's salty sweet and savoury.  Here's what I put in mine:

Unsalted cashews
Unsalted almonds
Unsalted brazil nuts
Unsalted sunflower seeds
Salted pumpkin seeds (not many, this is probably the smallest aspect of my mix)
Mr Snack chocolate blend (it has unsalted nuts along with tiny dark chocolate chips, carob coated raisins, chocolate covered peanuts, chocolate covered espresso beans)
Miniature yogurt pretzels
1-2 scoops of reese peanut butter chips
Banana chips (very lightly sweetened, not too bad in calories though)

Now OBVIOUSLY, I put in very little of the "bad" stuff.  But it still works out to 150 cal/28 grams just because of all of the nuts.  But the way i see it is I'd rather eat 300 calories of mostly decent trail mix than binge on tato chips and ice cream and it really works (at least for me).

Weight Loss Blah... should I do something more Jun 10 2008

Racquetball is great.  So is the elliptical.  I don't like treadmills at all, I NEVER have.  Try a stationary bike too.  That is absolutely my 100% FAVOURITE cardio machine in a gym.

Make sure you're eating well - complex carbs, fruits/veg, lean proteins, lots of water.  No added sugars (or as few as possible at least), as few simple carbs (pre-packaged foods mostly) as possible.  Your calorie number is fine, but a calorie is not just a calorie.  You've got to be eating good foods to promote fat loss.

I don't think you should run right now.  WALK, as much as possible.  Walk walk walk.

"i eat fruit all the way up until dinner and i have a very light meal for dinner, so why in the heck did i gain 3 pounds."

If all you're eating is fruit and then a light dinner, you're not eating well. And you aren't eating ENOUGH. Especially for the exercise you're doing. You need more protein, more complex carbs, less sugars. Natural sugars are still sugars. While the weight you've 'gained' is probably either water weight or muscle (only morning weight is accurate), it's not really the point.

Weight Loss You know you lost weight when.... Jun 10 2008

Here's some of mine:

My best friend gave me his prized belt (as I loved it and it goes with most of my clothes) and when he did, I couldn't even consider wearing it.  Now I need to give it back because I'm out of notches.

The jeans I just bought in late May are barely held up with a belt anymore.

I get told to "eat a sandwich" by strangers (I'm 5'5''/120 and small framed so I look average not really all that "skinny") on a daily basis

Collar bones.  Hip bones.  I has them.

I don't get glared at by cashiers when I buy a couple items of "junk food" at the grocery store (While I don't eat or want junk food anymore, but my mom does still eat a few "junky" things and I shop for her sometimes)

I can walk into a McDonalds (Fruit and yogurt parfaits without granola - yum.  I don't think I've eaten or drank anything else from McDonalds in about 4 years now) and no one makes a comment, gives me a look, or anything of the sort.

I run into people from my past and they double take and tell me how thin I am now.

Strangers ask me what my secret is.

My phone explodes with text messages from guys that ignored me in high school (I've been out of HS since 2002 mind you - and I was only 15lbs heavier) who would like to take me out.

Foods Does anyone know about Food on Planes?? Jun 10 2008

Original Post by annielikesapples:

Either bring your own food or buy something more or less healthy at the airport. Plane meals are horrid, if not calorie-wise, then by their taste and nutritional value.

I actually like British Airways meals.  I used to do the overnight to England/morning to afternoon back.  They're not GREAT but they're pretty edible.   Curries and lasagna weren't bad, though I picked around the meat (I'm not "vegetarian" per se, but I do avoid meat 99.9% of the time - I DID NOT like their veggie meals at all).  And their breakfasts are yogurt, a bran muffin, and fruit juice.  Hard to screw up ;).  On the afternoon flights back you get a ham/cheese sandwich, a small bag of crisps and a tiny coke (like one of those 100 cal cans).  While not the BEST for you, I think their food isn't going to wreck anyone's diet really.

Though the poster I quoted is 100% right.  Eating first (depending on how long your flight is) or bringing your own food if you can is the way to go.  With security the way it has to be, you can't always take your whole meal with you so that's something to keep in mind.

Original Post by maryyy:

breatfeeding mothers need to eat MORE than normal women. I don't know exactly how much, but you burn a lot of calories while breastfeeding, hence why you are hungry!

Google it !

200-300 calories per day while nursing.  You burn 500.  Not ALL women NEED those calories while nursing either.  The rule with that is mostly "eat if you need it".  I didn't really get hungrier while nursing after the first 3 or 4 months so I stopped eating the extra 300 calories.  I dropped weight like crazy and I wasn't even overweight  I was 5'5'' and 125 and still losing without even trying (and eating a good amount of calories) just from the deficit that nursing created.

And you also have to make sure those extra calories are GOOD calories.  Nursing will make you crave, similar to pregnancy, at times.  You need to be really careful with that or you'll end up binging.  Seeing as (at the time) my husband was working on a clean build we didn't keep that kind of stuff in the house but I know that most people do so I figured it was worth mentioning.

What you need to do is make sure you have a good wholesome diet.  I'm guessing you may be feeling hungry eating a lot of simple carbs (pre-packaged foods, things with added sugar).  Make the switch to brown/wheat EVERYTHING (pasta, bread, rice mostly).  If there's any raw veggies you like, toss any kind of potato chip or cracker (well WASA crackers are okay because you can spread laughing cow on those and top with cut veggies) and opt for them instead.  If that's too boring for you, spread (or melt) laughing cow cheese over them (35/cal per wedge - 1 wedge will cover a whole bowl of cherry tomatoes).  Make sure your proteins are lean (chicken, turkey, fish are your leanest meats), get your good fats (nuts and olive oil are 2 good sources) but watch the RDA.  These are all things that may help you feel fuller.  The better your diet is, the fuller you'll feel on less.  You CAN feel stuffed on 1200-1300 calories in a sedentary lifestyle, I promise.

Foods Low-Calorie Peanut Butter? Jun 10 2008

Eat a regular peanut butter - however make sure it's a natural one.  Crazy Richards, Nature's Promise, even the Smucker's one (that has added salt, but it's still better than added salt, sugar, preservatives, etc).

There's a peanut butter + flax seed and it tastes great which is really nice but it gets rock solid and you have to keep it in the fridge and nuke it everytime.  I really wish they'd fix that because the peanut butter itself is A-MAZING.
