Mmmmm bacon candy! That sounds amazing, really. Simliar to this: my family has been making this appie forever, it's always a huge hit. I never met anyone who didn't instantly love this. Wrap half a slice of par-cooked bacon around a water chestnut and secure with a toothpick. Make a whole tray, they go fast. Then bathe them in a solution of 1 part soy sauce, 1 part worchetershire sauce, 1 part brown sugar, and some minced garlic and black pepper. Cook in a 400 oven, basting with sauce repeatedly, until the sauce is all carmelized and sticky. Hands down, the BEST incarnation of bacon ever. |

Original Post by crazydiamondchrysalis: BAH HA HA me three!! I totally do this. At my office, we have just one stall. The weird part is, the lone stall is in a bathroom with a separate sink and a door that locks. So some people will lock the stall but not the outer door, so you can walk in on them but are separated by the stall door. I don't get it. It's really uncomfortable to stand there while they finish, I usually just flee, but sometimes they are already done and washing their hands and I've turned to flee saying "sorry!" but she will say "oh no come on in" and I have to go into the stall and try to pee while she stands in the sink area and talks me. EW. I am PEEING, I am half-naked and squatting on a toilet, get the f out. |

Dear coworkers, Your constant whispering on the other side of my cubicle wall makes me want to commit a violent act. Either talk normally or find somewhere private to chat!! Also it would be nice if someone emptied the dishwasher once in a while besides me, instead of just stacking dishes in the sink rather than actually EMPTY the darn thing. Dear other coworker: Please stop sabotaging my work because you feel threatened. Analysis verification is an integral part of evaluation, it is not a criticism of your work, and our boss ASKED us to do it, so quit being a big baby and work with us here. |

Hmm hotness I don't know, maybe, but I HAVE notcied that Rita has gotten super-annoying this season. I always found her slightly annoying because of her denseness, but this season she seems to have ramped it up even more; dense and unreasonable and generally the kind of stereotypical harpie wife I never want to resemble. I didn't see last Sunday's episode yet, have to wait until Friday...woo I am excited! |

I love radishes...never heard of cooking them though. I like them in a green salad, or on their own or with some veggie dip, or in this really yummy Radish and Quinoa Salad: slice radishes, cucumbers, chopped red onions and tomato, quinoa cooked and chilled, goat cheese, capers, and parsley with a vinaigrette of dijon mustard, olive oil, and red wine vinegar. Yum. |

Theoretically, if you heated it really hot repeatedly, it could lose some weight due to moisture loss. But what these other folks are trying to tell you is, there are no calories in the moisture that is lost. If Papa Murphy's offers a calorie per gram measure, you need to weigh the slice before you reheat it, not after. There should not be any difference in weight between the original hot slice and after it's cold. Cooling does not make it lose moisture (though freezing for a long time will). But, the fact is, even if they do offer the calories per gram, it's only an estimation. Error due to differences in preparation will make a much bigger impact than any small changes in weight due to moistue loss...so there's really no point in agonizing over it. |

| Weight Loss | Weight loss for health, or for appearence? | Nov 09 2009 21:01 (UTC) |
13 |
Well if you think about it, even losing weight for looks alone boils down to health. We want to look good so others will find us attractive - or so we feel attractive, which is primarily based on societal ideas of what's attractive, so pretty much the same thing. Socity's idea of what's attractive can be traced to health; a stong anf fit body, clear skin, disease-free, etc. So even if you think it's just for looks...really it's for your health too!

Leftovers from last night, taco salad.....ground turkey browned with chopped onions, peppers, mixed beans, and corn, on a bed of lettuce, cheese, fresh salsa, and yogurt, with some guiltless gourmet chili lime tortilla chips. And a pear. It was delicious! I had to bring a lot of containers to work to keep it all separate until lunchtime, but totally worth the extra effort. |

Lobster and crab with lots of hot butter to dip it in, YUM. Bacon-wrapped waterchestnuts, and lots of em. Scalloped potatoes made with real cream and butter and cheese. Chocolate truffle cake and vanilla bean ice cream. Drooool. Then when I am in a fat-coma they can go ahead and do their worst. Oh yeah and I'd second that big glass of eggnog! With rum! |

| The Lounge | I'm having a quarter life crisis (threatened by younger girls) | Nov 04 2009 18:42 (UTC) |

If I could do it all again....I would do just what I did, except the relationship part, that I wish I'd learned things a bit faster. At 28 I had an approaching-30 crisis and after a few false starts of changing my life (tried some things that didn't work out!) I ended up deciding to go back to school. By 29, I was enrolled in Uni for a second degree, and committed to do it right...the first time I just partied. This time I took it seriously, applied myself, worked like a dog between two jobs and full-time studies, volunteered in a position that was related to my goals, and eventually got hired at that position. The years between 30 and 35 were difficult; I entered into my first long-term relationship and while it was with REALLY the wrong person, I learned a lot aobut what I do and don't want and what I will and won't accept, and now am with the most amazing man, my soulmate, and I never would have found him if I hadn't learned all I had. I also spent many years in a job that I loved the work but hated my boss, she was a user and I lacked confidence to stand up for myself, but thoe years were valuable too and now that I am somewhere I am appreciated, I can see that I have a rich background of experience to draw on and am a very valuable employee. To sum up....those years were a period of change and turmoil and learning, and I am so glad I came out the way I did! The last few years have been fantastic, and I am still growing as a person and professionally, and shrinking physically, shedding all of the difficulties and angst and heartache of my wasted 20's. Life gets more and more amazing as you go along, as long as you are open to change and growth. I just have to remember that as I get closer to the big 4-0! |

| Weight Loss | 'the last 10 pounds' reality show | Nov 04 2009 00:41 (UTC) |

I watch it...but one thing that bugs me about it is the weigh-in. They get the person to stand on a scale and announce their weight with a great deal of disgust, and it's often in a totally normal weight-range (the idea is that these people only have a little weight to lose, like 10 lbs). And the trainer guy pulls out the measuring tape and with equal disgust announces "Hips - 39 inches!!" and the nutritionist peanut-gallery chick repeats "Thirty - nine ! Inches!" like it's just too horrible to fathom. Many of us would be thrilled to have 39-inch hips, thankyouverymuch, so I really dislike that part of the show. I think they could present that part in a much healthier way that does not promote self-loathing and disgust over a perfectly normal (though maybe not ideal) shape and weight. Also I can't help wonder when they do the pantry-raids and find all sorts of terrible junk and show piles ans piles of all the bad food they eat - how is it that these people have only 10 lbs to lose? Just drama for tv I guess. |

I was one of those girls in my late teens...giggley, silly, short-skirt-wearing, club line-up passing, underage drinking, the works. I remember feeling the daggers of the "older" girls who looked down on us but were probably jealous. Now...I think my version of hell would be going back to those times and being stuck there forever. The horror. I didn't have a serious relationship, respect, a decent job or plans, or a whole lot of self-esteem back then. I felt like my life was worthless. When I was in my twenties, I was also jealous of the younger girls who I saw as a threat...I had gained a lot of weight by then and was in a pretty dark place. It took me a long time to figure out what's important and what direction I wanted to go, and that I am a valuable person regardless of my looks, good or bad. Now I am 38 and just now figuring all this out and trying to get back my health. I am still about 100 lbs heavier than I was back then, and yet I still have ZERO desire to turn back time and be that person again. I have an awesome career and plans for the future, I have an amazing relationship with the man I intend to spend my life with, I have confidence in myself and feel pride in my accomplishments...and these are all things I made happen! I can't change my past but I can change who I am now and how I shape my life and my future. I regret that it took me so darn long to realize that....I spent so many years feeling bad about myself. Don't waste precious time feeling bad! Embrace yourself and your future!

| Foods | I will never buy another can of beans | Oct 22 2009 23:37 (UTC) |

I wondered this too, and so looked around a bit, and seems the soaking is recommended despite the cooking method....one comment noted that they tried omitting the soaking step when using a crock pot and it resulted in unevenly cooked beans. Lots of others say it's fine to not soak them first....but apparently the soaking process allows the gases to be released and so if you skip that part, you will discover why beans are considered the musical fruit. |

I guess the quality of the beans and how they've been treated make a difference. Like people, if beans are abused, they will have some issues! I never knew about the heat-treating, once I had some come out crunchy despite extra cooking time, I bet that's why. I've been buying Unico beans from our Italian grocer, and they are great. Unico also makes lots and lots of varieties of canned beans that are good too, so I guess they are just good in general. If you like refried beans, try making them yourself by just sauteing some minced garlic in olive oil spray then adding cooked or canned beans and smushing them while you saute for a few minutes. I did that with a can of Unico bean medley once, as a substitution because I had no cans of refried beans, and omg they were so much better! |

Oooh I'd love a pressure cooker, I have to do it the long way....soak overnight (though I have soaked for just 4 or 5 hours and they turned out fine), then change the water, add a little salt (I use about 1/4 tsp for 1 cup of dry beans) and simmer until they are tender, about 30-60 min depending on the size of the bean. It takes a bit of pre-planning but is super-easy. I don't know how much of that salt they actually absorb but I count it all and it's still significantly less than canned. |

Zombie!! You can be a zombie anything....have an old prom dress? You could be a zombie prom-goer. Just for the fun of dressing up AND being a zombie. All it takes is some plae face-paint or foundation, black eyeshadow around the eye sockets, red-rimmed eyes (I used some red lipstick applied with small brush), some blue or greenish tones mixed in or used for veins, some fake blood and gaping wounds (effects makeup is pretty cheap at the cosume stores). There's lots of zombie pics online for examples. You could even just be zombie you. |

My first thought was heck yeah! But then I started thinking about the implications. I'd be supporting a weight-loss method that I didn't use, don't believe in, and am rather strongly against....so accepting money to be used to support their sales would be morally wrong. So...no. Unless it was a ****-load of money lol What's that old joke about asking a woman if she'd have sex with you for a million dollars and she says sh proabably would, then offering her $10 and she get's all insulted and says "What do you think I am?" and the response is "Well we've established what you are, now we're just dickering about price" hehe |

The OP was the one espousing the egg-separator, tealparadise, I think the responses were for him. I have always used the shell-method, but if you (anyone) have a lot of eggs at once, the fastest thing to do is crack them all into a large bowl and gently fish the yolks out with your hand, letting the whites fall between your fingers. I don't see how the gadget would be any faster than the shell method, if time is the concern. |

That's exactly how my Grandpa used to make it, if you change garlic to parsley. He used his own farm chickens and homemade noodles that his sister would freeze for him. That was the BEST soup ever, I miss the jars he would send home with us at the end of weeknds at the farm, like party favours. I like to roast my chicken before putting it to simmer....adds more flavour, since I can't afford free-range chicken. I do make my own whole-wheat noodles though, makes all the difference! Or, use barley or quinoa instead. I am roasting a chicken tonight destined for the pot! |

| Recipes | Any ideas on how to use up 3kg of beetroots? | Oct 16 2009 21:16 (UTC) |

I loooove pickled beets. My mom gave me a few from her garden but not really enough to can, so I will likely just roast them with some olive oil. To pickle them, just boil for about 40 minutes or until you can get a fork in and out fairly easily. Cool, peel, cut into wedges and stuff into sterilized jars along with a couple cloves of garlic and a chili peppers per jar. While the beets are cooling, put your pickling liquid to boil: one portion vinegar, one portion water, 1/4 portion or so sugar, some pickling spice blend and I like throwing in some extra peppercorns and mustard seeds. Once it's reached a rolling boil, remove from heat a cool one minute then pour hot liquid into jars and seal. You can re-sterilize the jars at that point but I usually don't bother and have never had a problem. They are ready to eat after just 24 hours, and are soooo good alone or on a salad, and make a nice xmas-y pickle tray with some green cucumber pickles or pickled asparagus, for those xmas parties coming up (yikes!). And make great xmas presents/ hostess gifts with a circle of fabric tied on with a ribbon to make a little hat on the jar. |

| Weight Loss | Why do people do this?? | Oct 16 2009 00:20 (UTC) |
|
I agree that journalling is a great way to develop some CC friendships. Also helps if you have something on your profile about you...some pictures, some background, how you feel about stuff, why you are here...gives people a reason to be interested in you and want to communicate. When I started here I also had a couple of people whop wanted to be weight-loss buddies, emailed a bunch of times then petered out. Email is difficult - you have to want to communicate with that particular person, I can't even keep up with emails to my real long-distance friends nevermind here, so I understand why they drifted. With journalling, you say what you want and you have a bunch of different friends who may or may not respond, depending on the topic or how busy they are, but it's a much more efficient system than trying to keep up an ongoing one-on-one correspondence with a total stranger. |

I care not for the little cornies. Though I will still eat them if they are around. Jujubes are my weakness. I could (and have) eat them until I have a stomach ache. I now avoid the value tubs of jujubes, sour dinosaurs, sugar-coated jellies, and all the other evil halloween candies. I may buy a small bag from the bulk section, but I am NOT to be trusted around value tubs. On last weekend's road trip my sister brought a bag pf the most delicious candy invention ever - chocolate-coated jellies. OMG. I could have gone a whole life without discovering those...now there's no unlearning that. Dammit. |

When I was a kid and living in Saudi Arabia, I burnt my feet on the hot asphalt and after bandaging them went out to try and fry an egg on it. It did not fry, it maybe turned a little white around the edges but that's about it. I was really disappointed. And had to clean up raw egg. |

| Foods | Any guesses on the calories in this one!?! | Oct 15 2009 00:20 (UTC) |
2 |
It's mainly a question of portion size and how it's prepped. The wrap part can be anywhere from 100 to 300 calories depending on size, the veggies don't count for much unless they are roasted in a lot of oil, if they are I'd count about 80 cals for 2 tsp plus maybe 100 cals for veggies if there's a lot, brown rice is 100ish cals per half a cup, black beans are also 100ish cals per half a cup, pico de galo is about 20 cals per 1/4C, soy cheese can be anywhere from 70 to 130 cals per 30g serving. I'd say that a conservative estimate for a large but not-too-huge one (made with a 10" tortilla) would be around 600 calories. |

| Foods | What snacks do you keep in your desk? | Oct 15 2009 00:09 (UTC) |
6 |
I don't keep anything in my desk, because I'd be too tempted to eat it whenever I thought about it being there. I plan my meals and snacks in the morning, and bring only what I need for that day. I think having a snack stash involves some intuitive eating (being able to recognize when you are genuinely hungry and not just wanting food) and I just suck at that. Snacks I bring are pretty diverse...usually whatever is available in my fridge; mostly a peice of fruit (bananas are a favorite), sometimes crackers and cheese if I have room for it in my calories, sometimes turkey pepperoni if my sodium isn't otherwise too high that day, sometimes an oatmeal mini muffin if I made some that week or some crispy minis or 10 raw almonds. About the only thing I don't ever snack on is veggies, because they are usually a big part of my meals and I just don't feel like more. |

Ooooh that "over the shoulder sorry" drives me nuts. Most of the time it's clear they are NOT sorry or they would not have done it. I want to shout "No you are not, don't LIE and compound your mistake, just don't do it again!!" You can stick your sorries in a sack. Hmph. I am trying to give up guilt, myself. I was brought up Catholic so it's extra-hard. Catholics have raised guilt to an art form. Guilt is can help us recognize wehn we have done something wrong, but better to just identify the wrong, learn from it, and move on, and skip the guilt part. Yes that involves making an honest attempt to NOT do the things that made me feel guilty, not just being concience-less. |
