Fitness Should I quit field hockey? Sep 21 2009

Thanks everyone for your input.

However, some things have changed. Since I posted this, I heard that about half the team, including my best friend (who I thought incapable) were caught smoking and drinking. Now I feel like if the varsity starters don't have a respect for themselves, or their team, AND the coach is a jerk, why should I keep playing? The team has seriously let me down. I would just LOVE to have their spots, and they are practically giving them up.

did someone tell you that you had to be 90 pounds or did you just pick some number? I think we should know some more information before everyone freaks out.

Motivation Overeating... Mar 04 2009

all the time. I assume that because I'm PMSing or whatever, that I deserve chocolate or something. Basically, I overeat all the time. If you figure out the cure, you've got to help me out!

Until then I suggest throwing away all temptation!

A field hockey trainer/nutritionist once gave our team a lecture about what the right foods to eat before and after playing. She told us that there is a 30 minute window right after you exercise when you should definitely eat. It was something about metabolism or something.

Yes! Ah my mom totally does that! She buys me cookies and cake and hot chocolate all the time! I totally get it. I just told my mom to stop, but she still does it. Maybe you should just find someone to share it with. That's what I usually do.

I bought this cookbook called the New Dieter's Cookbook and it is huge and filled with really good ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. It has pictures for every recipe and they're pretty easy. Plus, it doesn't taste like diet food because it's home made.

no. way. it's my birthday tomorrow too! But, seriously, if you want to cry. cry. I had a similar day today. I cried for maybe 40 minutes and am currently putting off studying for a huge chem. test. How much weight are you trying to lose? maybe we could be buddies or something. By the way, isn't October 14th just like, a great birthday date? I love it.

you could get the 100 calorie packs of cookies, or they even come in candy and chips now. They're tasty, but sometimes it can be hard to just eat one packet, and before you know it, you've eaten like six. But, they're very yummy.

ha! you sound like me. seriously, I'm such a disaster at this. I think that what we really need to do is decide why this is worth it, and remind ourselves of it every morning, at every meal, at snacktime, and whenever else you feel it is necessary. Maybe instead of using food as a treat or whatever, you could use like, a trashy magazine or an entire afternoon devoted to guilty pleasure TV. (like America's Next Top Model. It's so bad, but you just HAVE to find out who wins.) Also, buying diet soda makes me really happy because it's such a treat for me. (my family doesn't buy soda). Also, finding a hobby that keeps your hands busy is really helpful, like knitting, or sewing, or taking pictures. As for the cookies, enjoy them. You're allowed to eat food you like. Eating a bag of cookies once a month isn't going to make you fat. However, eating a bag of cookies each day might. Keep trying. Smile

I love chewing gum! I only chew sugar-free stuff though. It gets me through those tough hunger times, like around 3:00 and after dinner and stuff like that. It sometimes makes my head and jaw hurt though from all the chewing.

I usually don't get enough veggies, so I've started drinking little bottles of low sodium V8 every day. It tastes kind of like tomato soup, and it's very salty, which is why I get the low sodium kind. Even if you don't like the way it tastes it's very quick and convenient, only 30 calories, and has one whole serving of veggies in it.

slow down! It's not too bad. Better than middle school i'd say. It's hard to handle sometimes, yea. But it's doable. I get really stressed sometimes, but even when the teachers slam you with papers and tests, all you really need to do is plow through until it's over. As for the staying up late, yea. It happens to me a lot, but mostly because I procrastinate and I've got a lot of sports and stuff. I generally tend to spend an hour or an hour and a half on homework, on average days. Lab reports take me a couple of hours, and studying is like maybe an hour a day until the test, or a couple of hours the night before. It sounds bad, but you just have to get used to it. One thing though, be prepared for it when fall comes. I never had to study much, and it was like a huge shock when I first started. Just make sure you don't overschedule.

I did that once. For about a week I ate hardly a thing. It worked. I lost maybe four pounds that week. But I was miserable. I was angry and irritable, I was so mad and upset all the time. The next week I went back to eating normal and gained all the weight right back. Skipping meals is a time waster.

Motivation Am I Being Stupid? Mar 28 2008

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for your positive feedback! When I first asked this question I was expecting some negative things on how teen girls are stupid for being insecure, but you guys proved me wrong! I wrote like a paragraph to each of you!

Munsey: thank you for your feedback! I really do think I need to know more about what I eat and what it can do to me. I feel like I end up eating things that I think are healthy but aren't.

trustwomen: Thanks for calling me slender! And you're right, the pressure is coming from school and friends. I do feel like if they can be thin, I should be able to. But about not obsessing over food, I  think about that a lot. I don't want to be obsessive, but it is getting that way.  I do need confidence too, but it's hard to come by in my school. The thinest of girls are insecure.

spoiled_candy: Ha! I agree! Peer pressure does suck, but the thing is I don't feel good about my body, but I know I should.

funindasun: My family and my friends all know that I watch what I eat, but they usually start me on eating, then I can't stop myself. I'm not obsessed with counting, yet. It's too hard for me to know exact numbers and things. Your feedback really helps though. I feel like since you're around my age you understand what I'm trying to say. One question: how am I supposed to count everything I eat without my friends getting worried?

miss_trouble:  Thank you! I feel like most older people look and say that I'll have my whole life to worry about weight and stuff, but that's my point. I want to get into good habits now so its not so hard later.  I'm trying to love my body too, but I just can't help myself when I look in the mirror and don't see what I want to.

chris1208: Yea, most of the girls I look at do have tiny little hips. But in reality, most of my fattness lies on my stomach, not but but or thighs. And I know that no matter how low I go on the scales, I won't be happy. I try to make the best of my body. I'm very physically fit. I can run quick, I can do most exercises, I'm very physically active. I just eat too much. What I'm really using CC for is to stop me from overeating, which is my huge problem And I'd love to hear your class reunion stories! Well, the ones with happy endings anyway!

techraven: Yeah, I've tried to calculate body fat %. The last time I did it was like, last year though. I'll try it and see what it says :)

leiann: I know counting calories is a bit extreme for a girl my age. My would think I'm crazy. Thanks for your advice!

thekimberly: haha! thanks!
