I was a big fan of the Food Network and watched my favorites everyday such as Barefoot Contessa and Good eats etc. I would often watch, then cook and eat what ever looked good on those shows. Lets just say I was putting on weight not taking it off while engaged in that kind of viewing. I stopped late night TV viewing because I got too hungry. I don't miss it any longer and I'm losing weight finally. The late night commercials for Burgers always made my tummy rumble. |

| Weight Loss | Zig-Zagging vs. Constant Calories | Apr 08 2008 17:30 (UTC) |

I just put it to the the test myself, unintentionally. I was away from home with my youngest daughter on a two day road trip with Motel and restaurant interludes. I packed some healthy snacks and beverage's for me just in case I got really hungry. I ate off calorie while dining out and ordered what I wanted. Got a chance to swim in a pool, and drank wine. I was worried I might have gained or blew it in someway. The week before we left, I stayed on Calorie perfectly. This morning the scale says I still managed to lose a little and it was a good feeling coming home and knowing zig zagging on occasion for me will work into my life just wonderfully. |

Also curious, why yawning is so contagious! I yawned twice while reading this thread and I am neither oxygen starved nor tired. Power of suggestion. :O |

Good for you in getting motivated. I don't like to 'Workout' either but I love to dance to any music that gets me moving. Turn the volumn up and just look at the clock when you start and when you stop. If you can move your body for 30 minutes to your favorite music starting slow, speeding up, then ending slow you'll get exercise in your day and have a fun time in the process. This has worked for me for two months. Still losing. |

| Weight Loss | Just count calories? Or count everything? | Apr 05 2008 19:22 (UTC) |

I started out with baby steps as well. Just measuring and trying to get everything logged and tagged took hours. Now that I have that under control, I try to watch sodium and fat. I'm going to start logging those two things until it becomes habit then move on with fiber and protein. Its not that I haven't been careful with what I eat, and staying within my calories, its the getting it all in my food journal that is taking some getting used to. It hasn't become too overwhelming yet and the results are a more healthful and thinner me. :) |

Taking a perfectly healthy food and either candy coating it or deep fat frying seems to be a Western culture thing. No wonder we are a fat nation! A local County Fair in my state made deep fried twinkies on a stick all the rage a few years back. Twinkies are bad enough on the whole but deep fat frying? *Groan* Maybe it all started with Candy Apples? |

| Weight Loss | Any tips for not nibbling while cooking? | Apr 04 2008 19:13 (UTC) |
3 |
While cooking, tasting used to be a problem for me. Not stopping with a sip or nibble. Now I mentally talk to myself how good I was all day and how good my dinner is going to taste as I eat it off my plate not out of a pan. Determination and stubbornness are my friends these days. My husband and daughter are very supportive of my weight loss/healthier life way of eating. I have asked them to help wrap up and put away left overs after dinner as it would really help me control the after meal grazing. Its not always a problem but there are trigger meals. They are pretty helpful that way now. |

Restaurant Chinese food is challenging to chose wisely from a healthy stand point, but it certainly can be done. Anything Sweet and Sour sauce is going to be deep fried and covered in a gloppy sugary sauce. Low Mein is based on wok fried noodles in an abundance of oil. On the other hand, eating this way once in a while, small portions, mostly steamed everything as a 'free from counting calories meal' won't hurt most people. If your making your own Chinese food, well then you have control of the oil, vegetables, and meat choices. |

I was watching the voting and only saw the first vote cast for Jay. We had company unexpecdly until midnight and I never saw who was voted! The last I knew, Jay wanted to go. (I'm tired of all the weeping too) Who got voted off? If the fans get to vote, I hope Roger goes. He acts like a jerk. I would love to see a woman win. |

| Weight Loss | Best book to read about weight loss/healthy food | Apr 01 2008 16:20 (UTC) |

I also just bought Eat This Not That by David Zinczenko. It is not a true Diet or Nutrition book. For instance, nearly all the good choices listed still contain whopping amounts of sodium but it is invaluable if you eat out a lot, or buy lots of processed things at the grocery store and need ideas in a hurry for better choices. There are many choices listed in the book for meatless eaters. I regret not having this book while raising my children. I also keep it in the car. |

I was wondering the same thing! Where is everone? I went down three the beginning of the week then up two so at least kept off 1 pound. I'll take it, thank you very much!:) I am going to keep plugging away at the same old same old for now. Reading every single lable of every single thing that goes in my mouth for now until I have it memorized and get outside and walk at least twice a week. Weather has been miserable. |

I like them too, and put them in or on anything you would put lettuce. They are very easy to make yourself on a window sill and take up little space. All you need is a package of seed(lasts a long time) Health aisle at grocery store or Health store. A clean mason jar or clean recycled mayo jar. A bit of screen cut to fit the top and just the metal ring of the mason jar. Thrift stores have the jars and rings for pennies. 1 tablespoon of seed in the jar. Fill jar with water, invert and strain out once a day. They start to sprout in just a few days and at the end of a week you have a full jar of sprouts. A lot cheaper than buying store bought and you have control over the process. |

garbluv 3/30/08: 160 lb I hear you yaelws! Getting into the 150's is a huge battle for me right now. My life has been divided between before stroke and post stroke. I haven't seen the scale register in the below 160's since the year 1993 so I'm happy to be going down at all as I type this but good golly it's a struggle! |

Both adorable as well, and grandma's are allowed to be biased.:) I have just over 40 pounds still to lose (down 30) making it happen the CC way. | Weight Loss | Eating dinner at someone's house. How do you handle it? | Mar 28 2008 14:02 (UTC) |

The host/hostess has no doubt gone to much effort and or expense to entertain. My theory is, be a gracious guest. Eat a little of this and a little of that. Be genuine in any compliments to the host/hostess for any choices that look or taste particularly healthy. Avoid mentioning diet or any other reason for not eating something. Chances are, no one is paying attention to what may go in your mouth anyway. Unless you bring it up. People that talk about their eating habits at parties are considered the biggest bores. Eat before you go and give yourself just enough calories for there to be something on your plate. Eat slowly and partake in lively table conversation. You will come off as a great guest. Next day, get back on track and congratulate yourself for surviving one of the big challenges of eating right. Dining at someone else's home! :) |

| Weight Loss | How long do you have to stay at a weight for it to be a plateau??? | Mar 28 2008 02:21 (UTC) |
35 |
Agreed. If weight was steadily dropping and stopped even though all else stayed the same, I consider it a plateau. I upped calories and added another 30 minutes of exercise three times a week to jog it loose after I plateaued for two weeks. When it happens again(and it will) I'll try something else. |

| Weight Loss | i can already tell this is going to be a hard day | Mar 27 2008 16:57 (UTC) |

I have those days a lot. It helps me to obsess myself into planning exactly what I AM going to eat for the day and stick to it. For instance, I'm the meal planner and maker in my family. I decide whats on the table and tell myself through the day I will measure my rice, bulgur, whatever is the high calorie food. Measure my meat etc. Take control of your portions. First step Second step, if you eat out a lot, do research on those establishments menus. Put that obsessive food thought process into what is worth eating. If cheat/free days work for you, use one on your most troubling day of the week. These things help me a bunch. Some days are tougher than others. Find your own balance. Hope this helped a little. |

| Weight Loss | things your Dr. told you when you were trying to lose weight that you could go your whole life without hearing | Mar 26 2008 23:43 (UTC) |

I love my Doctor, she's great really, but the first time I told her I was serious about losing weight she gave me a 10 minute lecture about how unhealthy McDonald's food was. Huh? I never eat at McDonald's. Never told her I ever did want to eat there. Weird. Her assumption all overweight people must pig out there constantly, kind of annoyed me. |

WOW! That is one loaded muffin! You got 24 muffins out of this? First thing that jumps out at me is how much moisture/liquid you have going in this. Thats a clue. Blue berries and tofu, pumpkin, milk, hot chocolate, and egg whites . No wonder they didn't rise or bind. A sprinkle of Baking Soda would do nothing. You would need at least 2and 1/2 teaspoon's of Baking Powder and at least 1 tsp of Baking Soda and that still might not do it. As for egg whites, I have no idea how many more, but that is just more moisture added to an already wet batter. This is a unique recipe and I have no idea how to change it other than try adding the two rising agents I mentioned and try again. You might try making this in a rectangle baking dish instead for a cake you cut square pieces from. Just a thought. The ingredients do sound Delicious. A meal in a muffin. :) |

Did some of them rise normally or are all of them lumpy and deformed? If some look normal I suspect the oven. Normally with muffin batters, its best not to over mix in the bowl. Fold and stir everything quickly incorporating ingredients and the batter should be lumpy. If you stir egg whites too long they lose the air volume and go flat. That could have happened. If they are delicious that's good! If you liked them just keep using the recipe you have and practice makes perfect. With baking, the more you do it the better you can get. You'll be a pro in no time! :) The average muffin recipe calls for between 1 or 2 tspns Baking Powder and Baking Soda. Both those things are agents to help baked goods rise. The amounts are presise for different recipes. |
