Fitness Does anyone NOT workout with music? Jun 26 2009

im a cyclist and i go on 30 or 40 mile rides almost every day and never listen to music. for one thing, i would probably die out there in traffic and after a while the beat just makes my head hurt and i want to rip them off (probably because i listen to electro house). i live in a beautiful area and the scenery is enough for me.

although, when i run i do like to listen to something upbeat and trancy. i dont run anymore because i hate it and it hurts my knees, but there are a few amazing songs that still remind me of running around the track, full of endorphins ahh feels good to listen to it now.

cactus leaves? i live in the middle of the desert and i've seen a lot of cactus but i don't think i've seen any leaves... are they like prickly pear pads?

I have eaten some sort of mexican cactus tamale before, and prickly pear jelly but i have never made it myself.

http://www.succulent-plant.com/crecipe.html this has some recipes.

 http://www.practicallyedible.com/edible.nsf/p ages/cactusleaves describes the flavor.

anyway from what i remember it wasn't really that different of a taste. the jelly especially just tasted like something you could go buy at the grocery store. i dont think the flavor is reallly all that shocking and im sure it would be easy to get used to.

i agree with the first poster. if you are "skinny fat" as you say lifting weights is definitely the best option. not only does it tone your pudge and give you a nice hard body, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn the less body fat you have yay!!!

and after you have recovered from the surgery, biking is a great choice for cardio. it has toned my legs so much i never even have to think about them anymore.

yeah, i've been to a doctor 3 times and they didnt even check anything out just put me on the pill. next time you go, don't drop it until they say something else. it might be cysts, dysmenorrhea, or endometriosis or something else.

i think bc is bs, and i also used to take a lot of otc painkillers, there are side effects to that crap.

Health & Support How do gain but loose?? PLEASE HELP! May 20 2009
23:07 (UTC)

exercise might suck but so does not being happy with your body. if doing crunches reminds you of bad times you can try a different exercise or just go through it when you are in a good mind state and recondition your feelings about working out, or try changing the environment you are in, or time of day you do it. try lifting weights. its not as terrible as cardio, honestly. plus i always get a rush afterwards like im on a nice opiate or something. that way you can feel good about exercise, and it will help your figure, and help you gain a little weight too probably. at first you might have to grind your teeth but just do it.

and everyone else is right about your stomach.. you are probably bloated from eating more food than your body is used to right now.

ok, i didnt read everyone's replies but my boyfriend and i are also going to college and living together and i really cant afford much of anything right now.

he is also vegan, so we cut out a lot of food.

the first thing i would suggest.. well, just because you eat together it doesnt mean you have to eat the same thing. just have what you need/ want so that you can lose weight. if you cook, you can do it easily.

now, i dont pay for 100% of my food, i have my bf's food sometimes, or his parents (hehe) but the bulk of it i pay for, and i spend less than $60 a month, and i would think you have more than that so you have a lot more options.

everything we eat is healthy. here's some of the things i love that are cheeaaapp

for breakfast i grate a potato and use some olive oil spray on a teflon pan and make myself a hash brown.. just add salt (not too much). its good with other herbs too. maybe some coffee, i use honey to sweeten it and add rice milk or skim milk.

we make a huge pot of chili once every two weeks, just tomatos and a variety of beans, mushrooms, peppers, celery carrots.. potatoes, whatever we have left.

we also eat a ton of peanut butter. whole wheat bread or english muffins, with peanut butter. jelly sometimes, usually for snacks. i have it in the morning.

oh rice! and frozen veggies! we add soy or teriyaki and have Chinese, i love those nights :D rice is so cheap, and if you get brown rice its going to be a lot healthier even though it takes longer to make, you dont really have to cook, just wait for the water to soak up so its not a big deal for us. we always just have a big bag of frozen veggie mix.

pasta. we have it all the time. i look for different kinda of marinara from the store because i dont like making it.

mushrooms with potatos and tomatoes, baked potatoes... we make big pots of soup. cold cereal.. from walmart, something simple like the generic chex.. its all good and healthy, and even though its not all low calorie, you can limit your portions easily.

making every meal might seem like a lot of work if you dont do it already, but it saves a lot of money and it becomes easy once you get used to it.

the majority of the meals i eat cost less than $1. pasta and potatoes and beans and things cost cents, and they are calorie dense. so what i do is eat slowly, and i drink water before during and after ( water is so good for you! ) and if i am still hungry, i have a banana or an apple. also, i have managed to adjust to eating 6 meals a day even with college and things. And since i do eat calorie and nutrient rich foods, i hardly ever feel hungry. i used to be scared of eating a lot of food, like chili, that has a lot of calories per serving, but its actually easier to stop eating because i feel like i have actually got some food in me. and when i want to munch, fruits and veggies.

also.. another thing you might want to consider is... skipping out on food that isnt healthy. usually prepared food is overpriced and full of crap that no one needs in their bodies. pick the most expensive "bad" food that you still buy and consider an alternative food. i still buy the milka chocolate.. mm but i do it hardly at all. i also used to get stuff like 100 cal packs and sugar free jello, its not worth all that money for something that is, well, not much food. only 60 cal per jello cup... its like buying expensive water. diet food and low cal food like that is a waste of money

Weight Gain waitt...so am i done? Nov 29 2008

according to the standard charts, you are still underweight and unhealthy. your doctor, however, knows more than anyone here. he said its safe for you to begin exercising again, because exercise is healthy. you shouldnt lose weight, and until you go talk to your doctor again, i would keep gaining, which means you will need to eat even more to make up for the calories burned exercising. for a person 5'3, 107 is the lowest weight considered to be healthy, which would still leave you quite thin.  i might shoot for that unless your doctor says something else. good luck

edited to add info

Weight Loss Sleepy after working out and a couple other questions... Sep 09 2008

that happened to me when i started dieting. i wasnt getting enough calories. it also happened later, but this time it was because i wasnt getting enough soduim. i think its probably one of those two things. you need at least 500 mg sodium per day i think most people get that. also, i dont know what they sell in disneyland but im assuming it isnt whole grain and good fat. eating food that actually nourishes your body does more than use up your calories for the day. it gives your body the energy it needs. if you eat things that are made with bleached flour and sugar its going to leave you feeling like crap when your blood sugar gets low. if you eat whole wheat, fruits veggies, nuts, etc you will have energy longer. make sure you get enough fat protein and carbs in your diet.

just watch the quantity of the sugary food and junky processed food. it doesnt really matter how much you eat in a day, more like every few hours. if you eat light all day (and probably have a slightly slower metabolism because of it) and then eat a ton of junk food at night, even though you dont go over your calories for the day you can gain weight. you should try to just eat small balanced meals all the time. however, if this is something rare, it will not make you gain a significant enough amount of weight to even be noticeable, so id say go for it, just watch your portions.

*edit* have no butter on your popcorn, just salt, or like i get the popcorn thats got reduced calories (its all in the butter) and salsa is nothing as far as calories imo (i don't usually even count those calories unless i have a ton) and the fruit sorbet or whatever probably has the same amount of sugar as ice cream does anyway (and sugar turns into fat sooner/more easily than fat turns into fat !!) if you are really concerned make a fruit bowl or something, or .. like some people like raw veggies but theyre not my fav.

3 weeks psshhh give it time. ill tell you the number one thing i did that made me lose weight was start eating low glycemic foods and i know you have heard it over and over but fruits and veggies :) raw food. stuff like that. i stay away from sugar more than i do fat, and i try to never have an entire meal that is high glycemic (i love potatoes though and will continue eating them FOREVER :D)

edit

relaxxx :) three weeks isnt that much. its not going to stay liek that forever. maybe with a little more info (stats cal/day exercise/day) someone can see if you are doing something wrong. other than that you just have to be patient and persevere.

The Lounge Do cheat days really help? Aug 06 2008

really unhealthy food doesn't appeal to me either now. that why i wonder if cheat days are just holding a lot of people back and making it harder on them. i find, in fact, as long as i eat healthy balanced food, and enough food, i never have cravings for anything i think is unhealthy, including meat and eggs and stuff. i can seriously eat vegetables all day long, and be like "oh my god i cant wait till dinner this split pea soup smells delicious" or when im really itching for something sweet i go crazy when we dont have bananas. in fact chocolate is one of the only things i still really really miss sometimes, but i also never stopped eating it! so i think that just proves that for me anyway cheating is still bad lol. its just my opinion though. and ughhh my bf eats 90% cacoa bars UGH. when he said "watch out its dark chocolate" i was really expecting something elseYell

Foods I'm proud of myself. Aug 06 2008

i switched my peanut butter to the kind thats made of just peanuts, you have to stir it but i love it because i can dump some of the oil thats at the top out so there's less fat, and i can use the peanut oil to cook. that plus no sugar or trans fat and a much better taste (takes about 3 days to get used to tho.

i would really rather make some soup out of vegetables or something. you would be surprised how much of that is 100 calories.

i agree

eat a banana it makes you feel good :DD

the one that isnt always with your weight is "trend" its pretty accurate, for me anyway, about where i am because i guess weight fluctuates when you weigh yourself (water weight etc) i think it also has to do with what you put in CC (when i quit putting calories in it stopped going down but i was still losing weight). like the computer projecting your weight loss. thats what i always thought someone can correct mme if im wrong
