The Lounge Any suggestions how to make moving easier for my cats? Nov 26 2009
22:11 (UTC)

When we moved last time, we moved the cat first and put them in a bedroom at the end of the hall with their litter box, blanket, a few toys, food and water.  We then moved everything in, and tried to set up as much stuff as possible.  Once we let them out of the room, we tried to keep the litter box in an obvious place instead of the closet where it would go.

Basically, getting setup quickly as opposed to letting boxes go unpacked for a while help because they will be able to get used to their surroundings faster.  Make sure their familiar blanket or whatever is available and that there is water and food in a couple different places if its a big place.

Other than that, make sure not to leave anything that could hurt them around because when moving we are always a lot less vigilant.

The Lounge my cat's tongue is sticking out.. drooling a bit.. she is not eating at all.. HELP!! Nov 26 2009

Okay, about a month ago, my cat got pretty much ALL of the symptoms you described: no eating, tongue sticking out, drooling and dropped chin.  They also thought he had rabies.  They did a ton of tests, most of which your cat seems to have been through, and they weren't sure at all so they put him on antibiotics.  It turns out out it was a very serious upper respiratory infection.  He was treated with Clavamox, Baytril, as well as an appetite stimulant and pain killer.  It could be possible your cat has the same thing?  My vet told me that there was an increase in this type of illness recently.

Everybody is different.

There is never a right or wrong when it comes to our feelings.

Perhaps you should try calling your loved ones more often when you are away or bringing a few pictures or a blanket from home.

I've never heard of any symptoms like that.  I'm glad you talked to the vet about costs as it makes no sense (I know some animal lovers will hate me for saying this) to bankrupt yourself trying to find out what's wrong.

I'm sorry that you and your cat are going through this.  I hope that he does improve.  I know that whenever I used to take my cat in the vet wanted to give me the valium since I was so stressed that my cat was sick.

Well, $3,000 is a lot, and some of it is borrowed.  Right now I'm still waiting to get an update on whether or not he's doing better today.  I called when I got home at 1pm, and the person I spoke to at the clinic though the vet had already given me a call (but I had no messages when I got home), so I told her that nobody had called, and she told me she would tell the vet to give me a call.

I'm starting to get frustrated as well because I guess its a big clinic, and so far, every day has been a different vet in charge of him, and because they are slow to return calls.  I don't mind if different vets treat him, but it would be nice to get the updates from the same person so that we could feel like we are on the same page.

Definitely get pet insurance as soon as you can.  If you don't use it, it's worth not having to make a decision of how much you're willing to pay for illness or injury.

What are your cat's symptoms and what treatments have you tried?

It doesn't make you a bad pet owner to be unable to pay for unplanned emergencies.  Everyone has a budget and obviously you're willing to do more than just provide food and water.

Did you get your cat from a breeder?  If so, give them a call and see if any of the family have similar symptoms.

He keeps his jaw open 90% of the time.  He also seems to be trying to caugh something sometimes.  At home, he had stopped eating and drinking for about a day before I took him in.  Also, when he was there, he had a fever and was dehydrated.  However, vets don't think its a neurological problem because he can close it the other 10%.  They did blood tests, a barium test and x-rays, and put a scope down his throat, and haven't found anything that would cause the problem.  They did put him on painkillers and antibiotics yesterday, and hopefully that will cure the problem that they haven't found.

That's the thing, at some point, I have to say when.  I did speak to the vet yesterday about the max amount of money I could afford, and we agreed that with that much, he can stay there until Saturday morning with this IV and medication, and that gives him a chance to get better and for the stuff to work.  But after that, we'll have to start thinking of the alternative.  I also have to keep in mind that my poor kitty will have been there, scared and wondering what is going on for three days then and thats not humane either, especially if nothing is improving.

The cat was a stray so hard to say.

Please don't feel like a bad pet owner.  You are doing the best you can.

I think that if you can, you ought to call the vet today and ask if you can meet with them about your options.  Some knowledge should help with the stress and worry you are experiencing.  Hopefully they will help you come up with a solution that you can deal with both financially and emotionally.

I'm waiting for an update from the vet within the next couple of hours.  I will have to discuss what the alternatives are based on the test results and let him know about the money.  We'll go from there.  Thanks for the advice.

I really can't advise you on what to do, but I think you should talk to the vet and discuss with him or her, candidly, your feelings and financial situation.  They've heard this stuff before, and should be able to help you decide what's best for the cat.

I hope your kitty gets better.  {{hugs}}

For future reference, it might be a good idea to look into pet insurance.  I have it for my dog for this very reason - I've never wanted to be forced to make a decision regarding Lucy's care by financial limitations.

I had never even heard of Pet Insurance until yesterday when they asked if I had it.  I live in Canada, and I've researched it and a few companies offer it so I will definivitely apply for it if he gets better, and my sister will too for her own cat.

I do think the tests were legimitate, I guess they were able to rule out a lot.  He just has something weird I guess.

I just feel completely powerless and a bad pet owner.  This little buddy has gotten me through so much.  My family thinks I shouldn't even have taken him to the vet so they definitively wouldn't lend me more money if they have to do more tests or I don't know what.

Alright, first, with using the log, I usually just log my raw egg (large usually), and then what else I've used to cook it such as milk, butter, oil, whatever. The scrambled egg setting is probably based on an assumption as to what it is cooked with.

Here are a few egg ideas:

-hardboiled to make an egg salad sandwich or to add them to big salads or pasta salads

-cooked for one minute in the microwave to add on toast

-any way cooked in the pan. whatever you like there.

-quiche (millions of recipes out there)

One note on eggs. When making scrambled eggs for example, you don't always have to serve them with toast, bacon, and home fries or whatever breakfast food.Often, I will eat eggs with steamed veggies and pasta for example. They are so versatile; there are no rules. Do what you enjoy!

I try to eat a good breakfast within 1-2 hours of waking up. Usually around 400 calories. I DO find it hard not to snack all morning, but overall, I will feel better all day if I had breakfast. Try something with a lot of protein (like 2 eggs and half a bagel) and then in the morning, if you feel hungry, drink tea or something with no calories, or snack on fruit or veggies.

Um... icyflames - rude?

Anyway...

I've actually had this question myself lately.  My husband and I are planning on trying to have a baby within the next year, and I want my body to be in the best shape possible.  I understand that gaining weight during pregnancy is inevitable (and healthy), but I don't want to be one of those women who views pregnancy as an excuse not to care.  I do not want to reach the end of the 9 months and pray that I'm giving birth to an 80 lb child ;)

I've heard several times that if you exercise before and during pregnancy, it's much easier to take off the weight afterward.

I, for one, am excited about any and all advice I can get before hand in order to take the best care of my body for myself and my baby :)

I think that a lot of people don't realize the importance of being in shape BEFORE getting pregnant. I mean, for people who are already in shape, it seems almost insane to lose weight because they don't have to.

This reaction is something I have heard many times over sadly.

Kind of goes hand in hand with people who believe fat people are stupid and such.

The Lounge Can fat people be considered healthy? Sep 04 2009

The way I see it, some people aren't getting the difference between 'leading a healthy lifestyle' aka eating from all four food groups, exercising, etc, and 'being in good health'.

Really, anybody can 'lead a healthy lifestyle', whether you weigh 80 or 200 lbs. This is where other factors will kick in such as genetics, or other conditions.

I don't believe that it is the point the poster is trying to make. Can somebody who weighs 200 lbs be in good health? YES! If somebody has a regular check up every year, and doesn't suffer from any illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc etc. Basically, if you are in perfect health, then whether or not you are overweight has nothing to do with it.

People who have normal ranged weight can also be healthy or non-healthy. Just because somebody has a normal ranged weight doesn't make them automatically healthy. Many people with normal weight can suffer from heart problems, diabetes, etc.

Weight isn't what determines if you are healthy or not. Your health is what determines if you are healthy or not.

why the hell would you want to lose weight before getting pregnant only for it to pile all back on when you do? what a waste of time and a blow to your efforts only to see the scale increase and all your hard work done prior to the pregnancy mean absolutely nothing.

For women who have a significant weight excess, it is often recommended by doctors to lose weight beforehand in order to have a healthier pregnancy and baby. This reduces the risk of complications, and for women suffering from PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), losing weight prior increases odds of conception.

Once they become pregnant, if still overweight, the gain to be expected is much smaller (15-20 lbs).

I realize that the original post is super old, but whatever.

I dated a guy for one year who I thought was my 'soul mate'. He broke up with me because he was going away to school. I was convinced he was still in love with me, and that we'd get back together. I spent the next year broken, depressed, unable to piece my life back together. It was horrible. I let myself fall apart, and every time we would chat online would bring all the raw feelings back.

After one year, I decided to 'erase' our past. I deleted our chat logs, his emails, our pictures, and even music and movies on my computer that reminded me of him. I also stopped talking about him. It was liberating.

The next two years I was able to slowly move on, realizing that he 'WAS NOT' my soul mate. Duh!! If he had been, he would not have broken up with me. If a relationship is supposed to be, it is. If the guy wants to be with you, he would be.

Don't waste your time. Right now, you think he'll come back and that he's the one; but ultimately, in a few months or a few years, you'll one day 'CLICK' and realize that you were a fool and wasted a bunch of time of somebody who wasn't even thinking about you. You might convince  yourself right now that 'you know he still cares', but he doesn't. If he loved you, he'd tell you he loved you, and would do anything to be with you.

If my ex had loved me so much, and wanted to be with me so much, he wouldn't have gone away to school. He'd have gone to a school in the same city as me. We weren't soul mates. The end. When I finally realized that (on top of him being a selfish jerk), I was able to move on.

We have a landline in our apartment that works out to about 30/month. We have it as our primary phone, and I'm the only one of my two other roommates that has a cell so its worth it. Plus its a way to have a free voicemail when applying for jobs and stuff. If my roommates both got cells and wanted to drop it that'd be okay, except I would need to get unlimited minutes and voicemail on my phone which would end up being more than my share of the home phone anyways.

I grew up on a farm with 3 siblings. We weren't rich, or even middle class, but I have to say we never ran out of anything. I wasn't deprived. My parents were really frugal (they had a garden, they made homemade halloween outfits, only home cooking, etc) so it was alright. They also had a college account for each of us that would cover about 4 yrs of uni (Canada) so that's pretty impressive really.

Most of the people in the area were the same so I didn't feel out of place. Obviously when I got to uni I really noticed the 'rich kids' but I don't really mind. I know the value of money, and I'm glad I learned it.

I got married when I was 20. I'm only 23 now, but I haven't regretted it yet. We look at marriage a little differently than most people though. Not much changed when we got married, as we had been living together for 3 years already. We both agree that marriage should never be a reason for a person to stay in a relationship if they are unhappy. We also agreed not to have children until I'm at least 27.

First, this comment truly bugged the hell out of me. (I realize I'm on the fifth page, but whatever). "marriage should never be a reason for a person to have to stay in a relationship" wtf. Why are you married if you don't even take that commitment seriously. Marriage is something that you should only engage in if you have EVERY intention of staying together. You clearly aren't seeing that if you think you could 'leave'. WTF. This is why young people shouldn't marry.

Foods How much alcohol do you drink a week? Aug 17 2009

I was also raised in a family of non-drinkers. My parents drink maybe twice a year (Christmas and New Year's Eve). However, as I've grown up, and learned, and experienced different things, I've realized that I love the taste of wine and beer and don't see the point to restrict it to twice per year.

I have on average between 4-6 drinks per week; most of the time never more than 1 or 2 per given night. Most of the time its a cold light beer after work, and on the weekend one or two glasses of wine. I would consider that moderate?

A few years ago I didn't drink that often, but when I did, then it was 8-10 drink in a short period of time. THAT isn't really smart because after the third drink, you don't even taste it anymore, and you end up with a killer hangover.

I say, just do what feels right to you. Some people don't like the taste of alcohol and that's fine too.

Well, personally, I don't drink Diet Coke/Diet Sprite etc mixed with hard stuff. I find that they are too easy to gulp down, or if you mix one can of Diet Coke with one ouce of hard stuff, then that is a pretty damn diluted drink. I prefer sticking to light beer like Coors Light or Sleeman Light (which don't taste like water too much), or a glass of wine (I prefer white). If you alternate with one drink and one glass of water, there usually isn't too much damage at the end of the night, and you get to enjoy what you like.

Foods Refrigerating bread? Aug 17 2009

You can put it in the fridge or freezer; no worries. Just make sure you keep it as airtight as possible in the plastic bag. The only time I've had bread go stale really quickly in the fridge was when it was bakery bread stored in a brown paper bag. But otherwise, it always works.

The 'downloaded' or 'pirated' movies that I watch are movies I wouldn't otherwise see. I do go to the movies about once a month, and rent movies maybe twice per month. I buy a few per year. I watch whatever movies play on tv. The movies I watch online are movies I wouldn't have paid to see in theatres or rented. So the way I see it, they aren't losing money from me.

However, if I replaced the movies I see in theatres, rent, or buy with pirated stuff, then it wouldn't really be right would it?

That's the way I see it anyways.

I don't know. This morning, I was on the bus on my way to work, and when I got there, I just couldn't get myself to get off.  So I called sick saying I had a migraine. I have been there for about 8 weeks. The first 6 were like an intership that counted for my degree. Then they hired me. Since they hired me, I have been doing different tasks, and I feel completely overwhelmed, and it is stressful and hard. I'm also not sure if I even want to be working there anymore, even less for the whole summer, but if I quit now, it looks terrible, and I lose my chances of getting a reference. Also, by now there are no good summer jobs available so I'm totally screwed.

Also, I feel like my whole life is revolving around this job, I'm always either waiting for the day to end, and then I come home and crash, and have no will to do anything. I'm wasting all my free time by either watching tv or doing useless things on the internet.

Also, this is a job into the field I'm studying. So now I'm completely doubting my field of work, and if I even want to keep doing that type of work. The problem is not the people or the company I work for, everybody is nice and patient. But I have a lot of trouble with the stress and pressure of the work.

When lending money, you should always assume that you will NOT get it back. If you can afford to give somebody 1000, then go ahead. But if you can't afford not to get it back, don't lend it.

Obviously, you have to pay your rent first, so try to find ANY money you can to do it. Borrow it from parents if you have to. Second, do you NEED your car? Can you use public transportation instead; if yes, you might want to hold off on fixing it.

Other than that, ditch your cable/cell phone, sell anything you can that you don't absolutely need. Your big screen tv won't be useful if you are living on the street.

Finally, if you have some sort of retirement savings, now is the time to tap into it.  Sure, there will be a penalty, but if you stick to the repayment schedule, it won't be too bad.

When you get through the urgent stuff, try googling "budget", or borrow from your library (don't buy it!!) the new Suze Orman book, 2009 Action Plan. Basically, these are hard times, and we all need to get a bit more educated on how to handle our money.
