overweight and no periods could be pcos... of course only your doctor can diagnose that!

Weight Loss Should I have my metabolism checked? Feb 01 2009

i would

1.  eat more calories- 1200 doesnt seem like enough.  people on this site are repeatedly talking about how when they increased their cals, they lost weight.

2. try and get some more cardio in there along with your nightly exercises (time for a 15 minute power walk? how about some jump rope? that burns tons of cals in very little time!)

3.  talk to your doctor about your pcos/birth control pills.  maybe you are on a high dose and need a lower dose.  i have read that higher dose oral contraceptives are more linked to weight gain (be it water retention, increased appetite, etc)

i agree that you would benefit from getting a tour of the gym and actually maybe even a session with a personal trainer. my gym offers free first time sessions with trainers and yours might too.

i typically will do 30-45 min of cardio (usu stop at 30 if im running since its so much more intense in my opinion) and then spend approx 30 min doing weights and crunches.  then 10 min for stretching.  i only do the weights/crunches  2-3 times a week and never on consecutive days.  thats just my routine

if you felt totally pooped after 35 min on the bike, then i bet you got a good workout in. i wouldnt push yourself beyond that point. you dont want to risk fainting on some elliptical machine and getting hurt! one step at a time! you'll work your way up to more if you want to get there. you'll get there eventually.

i understand the feeling of being lost, self conscious, embarassed at the gym.  you should know that most people feel this way at some point! please dont be so hard on yourself. i am sure nobody was keeping track of what you were doing (or the numbers you were plugging into the machine) most people are wrapped up in their own workouts.

i recently posted about how i felt so embarassed at a trainer approached me at the gym asking if i wanted help. i felt like everyone was watching me and i thought i mustve looked like a fool.  the i realized that nobody cares about my workout- they only care about their own workout.  (and the trainer was prob looking to make some $ off of me)

anyway hang in there! keep up the good work!

his best friends are his high school friends (from like 10 years ago!)  and since then he has been pretty content having them as his closest friends and never felt the need to make new close friends.  he is pretty social at work but doesnt really make the effort to take those friendships outside the workplace.  now that most of his high school friends have moved away, he rarely makes plans to go out with new people.  (he and his high school friends still talk alot via phone/email/facebook but dont see eachother much)

Foods Movie theater Popcorn May 23 2008

oh how i love movie theater snacks!! they make me so happy :)

i know this sounds counter intuitive, but i usually buy a box of chocolate snacks at the movies, heres why- when i have popcorn, i mindlessly stuff my face and dont even really enjoy the popcorn while i am eating it.  i also convince myself that its mostly air and i dont feel so guilty eating it, when i am probably consuming 600 cals

but if i get a box of candy (i love the nestle bunch a crunch) i savor ever little tiny piece of chocolate b/c it tastes so good.  every now and then ill take a little bite of my boyfriends popcorn to give it a salty/sweet taste.  but seriously even if i ate the entire box of chocolate it would probably come out to about the same amt of calories, and i usually can only eat 1/2 a box before i feel sick of the chocolate!

Fitness burn 100 in 10 minutes May 23 2008

i am a little skeptical about how much the machines tell you that you're burning.  i can do 10 min on an elliptical and not break a sweat but it tells me i am burning 10 cal/minute, it just doesnt seem right!  i have heard that the machines vastly overestimate calorie burn

#30- fill up a HUGE water bottle in the morning with ice cold water mixed with a few tbsp of either lemon juice (my fave) or another fruit juice.  keep it by your side all day and make it your goal to drink it up!  repeat a couple times a day (i hate the taste of plain water but love it mixed with a little lemon juice)

Fitness Shin Splints! May 23 2008

you may need a bigger shoe size if you are using your sneakers for running- i had terrible shin splints and then i went and got properly fitted- you need to have as much room as the width of your thumb between the end of your toes and the end of the shoe.  i went up a full size and have had ZERO shin splints since then

also stretch your calves and ankles well beforehand!

well, your friends dont sound very supportive! do they know that it hurts your feelings when they say things like that? it sure would bother me if anyone said those things to me

i find these forums to be an amazing addition to any weight loss/fitness goals that you set for yourself.  its a great place to ask questions without feeling judged, and its a great place to talk to other people just like ourselves.  alot of this difficult journey is mental, not physical!

dont be discouraged!  for me, i would always get really depressed/disappointed with myself when i would launch on a new healthy eating/exercise plan, because i was trying to do too much too fast, and so i would always give up and then feel worse than before

my advice is to tell yourself that its OK to take baby steps and then actually take baby steps.  the jillian michaels kickboxing dvd sounds hard, esp if you are not used to working out.  i would start out by walking- i bet you $1000 you can walk and you do it every day without even thinking about it.  so either hop on a treadmill or go outside and walk walk walk.  you will burn calories, i promise!  once you feel more comfortable, try adding in new forms of cardio that are low impact- like elliptical, swimming, etc.  and add in some weight training too! i am not a weight training expert but you can do things like lunges, squats, pushups, etc in the comfort of your own home that will maintain muscle and boost your metabolism even more

in terms of diet- again, baby steps.  dont focus on cutting things out- focus on adding things in.  drink more water, eat more fruits/veggies, make sure you are getting enough fiber, etc.  i find this to be a much better mentality.  when you are eating so many good for you foods and drinking so much water, you kind of run out of room for the bad foods

its all about making small life changes.  it sounds like you've hit more of a mental roadblock than a physical one.  so i would focus on shifting your outlook :)

Fitness running question. May 21 2008
22:10 (UTC)

everybody feels comfortable at different paces- by "brisk walking" they just mean walking fast, like power walking- but really its just to get your body warmed up- the actual pace doesnt matter in my opinion.  i walk at 3.5-4mph and run at 5mph, and i know as it gets easier ill be able to go a little faster- it takes some experience to figure out what a comfortable pace is for you

Fitness running question. May 21 2008

i totally understand how you feel- when i first started running i could barely do 1 minute without wanting to die! i was so out of breath and my shins were on fire. i am doing the couch to 5K program and now, 6 weeks later i can do 20 minutes nonstop! my advice:

1. try a program like couch to 5K which will give you structure and small goals to work towards

2. run SLOWLY! dont worry about speed, who cares how fast you're going? the way to build endurance is by increasing TIME not SPEED.   i am up to running 20 minutes but that is at 5mph.  maybe later on i will be able to go faster but for now i am working on increasing my times

3. it sounds like you need new running shoes. some people recommend going up 1/2 to a whole size in running sneakers.  i used to get pain in my toes and severe shin splints after 1 minute of running- now that i have bigger sneakers i havent had this problem at all!  go to a professional running store and have them fit you for proper sneakers.  its not more expensive than going to a regular sneaker store and you'll get better service!

4. be sure to stretch and warm up with a brisk walk.  your body will hurt less

5.  dont be discouraged!  its unrealistic to expect to be able to run 1 mile right away.  i used to be just like you and then i readjusted my goals.  take baby steps!  thats why couch to 5K is so great.  you will feel accomplished after realizing you can finish week 1 and build on that

good luck :)

Fitness elliptical & muscle May 20 2008

hmm, 12 lbs of muscle in 2 months sounds like a lot, so i doubt all of this weight gain is muscle. how are your clothes fitting? tighter or looser? have you been doing any sort of weight training in addition to your elliptical workouts? are you generally a very muscular person? do you have any idea what your body fat % was when you started?

90 mins of cardio a day 5 days a week is alot, so i am surprised that you've put on weight- perhaps you are much hungrier and eating alot more than you used to?

good job! you go girl! i totally know how you feel. i have been going to gyms for about 8 years and still feel intimidated from time to time.  the key is to remember that nobody is paying attention to you! they are only paying attention to their own workouts.  i promise you i dont keep track of what anyone is doing at the gym except for when someone looks awesome at what they're doing and i am staring because i am jealous!

i would suggest asking for a tour of the gym and have someone show you how to use the machines.  i am definitely intimidated by the weight machines and i feel like i could get hurt if i didnt know how to use them properly. so i think its totally normal and standard to get a little "intro tour" when you first join a gym.  they will probably show you how to use the cardio machines too!

keep up the good work!

yeah its pretty odd. i have been like this for as long as i can remember.  i am not overweight (5'6" and 144 lb) and consider myself to be decently fit (though i could be way more fit).  maybe as my fitness level increases i will sweat more?

i totally agree liswobble! i find it pleasurable in a sick way! haha! nothing better than taking a shower after a sweaty workout!

The Lounge cant deal with my family! its complicated... May 12 2008

just to add to all this- my parents are really controlling and overbearing.  so in one way its very strange to me that they dont talk about my relationship.  but in another way, i see that my parents dont want to let me be an adult and grow up- and in that way it makes sense that they dont want me to be in a relationship- that would mean that i am an adult, that i dont need them somehow...

you guys are so great.  its amazing how you all can understand my situation and give helpful advice.  some of my best friends seriously DONT get it.  they always tell me "youre not giving your parents any credit.. its all in your head.... etc"  but they will never get it because they didnt grow up in my family and dont know what its like to be me.

anyway i really appreciate all this input.  its nice to be reassured that i'm not doing anything wrong.  i am tired of constantly talking to my boyfriend about it. hes not exactly a "neutral party" as he is directly involved in all this...so i think its better to get an outsiders perspective

thanksSmile

wow thank you all for your nice responses, it actually helps alot.  i dont think my parents necessarily disapprove, its just that they make ZERO effort to acknowledge that part of my life so it feels really hurtful on my end.  they would be really upset if i told them i was engaged tomorrow- so i dont really think i can win either way.  i think if i were to get engaged my parents would want to know- ie my boyfriend would have to ask their permission first.

my boyfriend is SOO supportive of this situation and pretty much says what all of you have said.  that my parents love me and that i cant change them, i can only control how i act.  since im not doing anything wrong, then i shouldnt act like i am doing something wrong. i should do whatever makes me happy and hope that everything else falls into place

i guess its just hard to deal with this situation because i love my parents but feel resentful at them for making me feel this way.  its kind of a harsh statement but its so painful and ive been having to deal with this sort of issue my whole life.   being the oldest child doesnt help- i have always had to "pave the way" for my younger siblings and i know i will be the first one of htem to get married and have to clear that hurdle with my parents.

Fitness Shin Splints...Any help?? May 12 2008
03:36 (UTC)

let them heal! your shin splints sound pretty bad and could definitely lead to stress fractures.  you are only aggravating them and making them worse each time you do such high impact activities so you need to give your shins a rest- do some low impact workouts like swimming and elliptical.

i used to suffer from major shin splints from running- then i decided to give myself an exercise makeover- i went to a running store and got properly fitted for sneakers- and it turns out i was wearing my running shoes too small. you may need to go up a size.  also changing your form helps, i agree.  running on the balls of your feet is best.  also, STRETCH before and after.  do lots of calf stretches. i also find just kind of rolling around my ankle helps alot too.

ive been doing a running regimen for 6 weeks and have not had a SINGLE shin splint since getting my new sneakers and stretching properly- this is amazing considering i used to get shin splints after running only one time!

Fitness running outside- feeling discouraged!! May 12 2008
03:16 (UTC)

wow munrori- impressive!!  i hope one day i can get to that level.  i am realizing now that i see the gym as a chore, where as i see running as something i can work at and see visible progress (can i run to this block? this bridge? this storefront?)  for the first time EVER i look forward to my workouts because i am getting personal satisfaction.

its not about burning calories anymore, its about setting goals and achieving them. and i am so proud of myself for having that outlook!
